Fan replacement for MDD | Amount of airflow really needed?

Hi,
I am thinking to replace my noisy PSU fans with new ones. However, those old Delta Fans seems to have pretty... high-end specs what comes to airflow (38 CFM) and therefore the noise level (47dba). I have been working with computers pretty long time and I have never seen a computer which actually needs that much cooling just for PSU so I think that less is better in this case.
I thought that I replace them with 12 CFM fans (with only 20 dba each) or then again I am looking an alternative methods to create a somekind of airtunnel into that PSU by adding second cooler + pipe to the front of PSU. Is there anyone who has actually modded this PSU with this level before?
Also I am thinking to replace that 120mm cooler with 50-60 CFM cooler.
Howabout adding small cooler to the CPU heatsink?
... Desperate? **** yeah. I could use my MDD to blow leaves from my front yard!

If you aren't using NAP mode, I certainly recommend it in order to get that baseline temperature down. My MDD 'idles' i.e. email/web at around 39 degrees C. And for me, it has not introduced any instability.
I also applied the fan kernal extension mod (see URL below) which spins up the main fan at a lower threshold:
http://homepage.mac.com/paul74/MDDFanExtensionMod.htm
The extension mod doesn't let my MDD go above 56 degrees C and having the quieter Panaflo means I barely notice the difference anyway. This only tends to happen if I'm doing something CPU intensive like video transcoding using Handbrake.
Further improvements I've recently undertaken are:
1. Replacement of the passively cooled Radeon 9600 Pro with an Nvidia 7800 GS (BFG). While this has a fan, it only spins at full whack during boot and then calms down - it isn't noticable during normal operation.
2. Replaced the original IBM system HDD with a 'whisper quiet' Seagate (or WD - I forget which). I did this as the original IBM was pretty noisy - something you only notice once you've got rid of most of the fan noise.
3. Flipped over the PCI slot cooler. The intake for this was on the top. I removed the body from the metal slot mount and turned it around so that rising hot air is more likely to be captured. It is definitely pushing out hot air now.
I still plan to make a few further changes. I recently moved the speaker (now fixed to the interior 'ceiling' using bluetac). Considering mounting a fan where the speaker used to be to suck air in for the PSU and graphics card intakes.
I'm also still considering some exit fans between the CPU heatsink and the rear case.
Regarding the optical drives, I removed the stock combo and replaced it with a dual layer DVD/RW taken from a Lacie external FW unit I used previously with my eMac. I kept the original in a safe place in case I ever need it though!
In terms of OS X support for third party optical drives, I hear cough that it may be possible to update the firmware so that it is cough cough seen as a Superdrive. Thats just what I hear anyway.

Anyone know a passive cooling that works on the MSI? I need to shut it down because I'm becoming crazy. All my system is silent but really quiet, but this fan is freakin me out.
    So?
    Thanks

    Supershanks,
It came with the Zalman FB123 (Fan Bracket Assembly) and ZM-F2 (Ultra Quiet Fan) package.
Its basically just a resistor. I can't remember the resistor color codes so I don't know what size it is.
Here's a good picture of it.

The bracket is junk and I replaced the Fan with a Thermaltake 92mm Silent Cat. At least I'm getting use out of that 10 cent resister. :-O.
Lemme see if I can find a resistor color code guide and see what size it is. If you've got a soldering iron it would be easy to make your own.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Check the following manual for the part number of the fan you require:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-62733.html
But I think 41V9932 is the part number you need based on information here for 2007-b4x:-http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-62741#23
You can buy it from eBay:- http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=41V9932&_sacat=See-All-Categories

  • Fan replacement for Satellite T135-S1312

    Hi there!
My fan is dying on my Toshiba Satellite T135-S1312. I'd like to buy a fan and replace it myself, but I can't find any information about the fans specifications (without opening it up and completely dismantling the laptop).
Taking apart the laptop is quite tedious. I'm willing to do it once, but it would be wonderful if I knew what fan to order WITHOUT opening it up and checking. Where could I find this information?
    Thanks!

Do a Google search or call around to your local AASP - AASP's Outside of the USA
How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP)
Ask the repair shop of your choice about the costs.

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I read your post on the HP Support Forums and wanted to answer your post. I understand that you cannot use the Touchpad and the key functions at the same time.  Here is a document on how to troubleshoot the mouse and Touchpad gestures. In the document, it shows you how to change the settings by clicking the settings icon to adjust the button actions on the Touchpad. Sometimes this is caused by an update that is needed. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that might need updating. Please let me know how this goes. Thanks

  • BIOS Update for Tecra A3: Is it Really Needed?

I frequently see a new bios update file from the download site. My Tecra A3 is 2 months old and have no problems so far. Is it really necessary to update the BIOS?
One more thing is that there is no mention about what the latest BIOS update will do to the laptop.

    Hi
If your unit runs properly and if there are no problems, in my opinion, the BIOS update is not necessary to do.
I use Satellite P20 about two years and I didnt make BIOS update till now. I agree with you that without any concrete description it is not easy to make decision about BIOS update.

  • Photo sharing replacement for mobileme galleries

    HI all,
I'm sure there are others out there, like me, who built their entire gallery strategy on using Apple's "mobileme galleries," and now you have had to find a replacement for that becuase as we all know....There will be no replacement for Galleries in iCloud, you'll need to find another service to host your photos.
So..what have you people done to solve the issue.
I'd love to know. I am still using iWeb and have a host for my site, but I need something to get some galleries on display. I used to love using the  "mobileme galleries" and really miss that so much. It was so elegant and simple.
If there are any suggestions you can share, please fire away.
Thanks in advance, and so long for now, TOM

  • Do I really need Bonjour for Win7?

My sister tried to install Bonjour on a Dell running Windows 7. She wanted to print to a shared printer hooked up to an iMac G5 running 10.5.8. She couldn't get Bonjour to do anything. I used Windows 7 own printer installation and it worked just fine. My question is for future reference, do I really need Bonjour with Windows 7? So I can pass this on to other who have similar set ups.

No, you don't appear to need LiveWare on your phone for LiveView to function.
As far as I'm aware, the only purpose LiveWare seems to serve is just enabling you to search for and manage plugins (which you can do yourself via the Android Market).
Some users have even suggested that they have had better stability after removing it.

  • What is the best replacement for iWeb?

I have been using iWeb for a very long time. I need to move on to something that is being updated. What is the best replacement for iWeb? I see Wordpress needs special software to work on a Mac.
    Thanks!
    Pat

I have used HostExcellence in the past and they support all the CMS's including WordPress, so you should have no problems there.
The top CMS's that most have heard about and use are Drupal, Joomla and WordPress.
There is probably no best one, but you need to look at them all and use the one that best fits your needs.
I have used all of them in the past, but most recently Joomla and Drupal.  Drupal has a reputation for being quite hard and Drupal 6 was, but with the advent of Drupal 7, things got a lot easier.  There are a lot more themes that you can use and if you want increased functionality in Drupal, then you can download Modules and install them.  You can have a membership site if you want it and this is easy to do - people can sign up for an account and you can restrict their access to certain parts of the site and then limit what they can do.  You can allow people to complete forms on the site itself and the results to be sent to you.  There is a Blog module that you can enable and that comes in Drupal Core with no need to download an extra module.
Joomla is good also and you can have a Blog with it too and there are lots of themes to choose from, but sometimes you have to pay for extras with Joomla - you can download Extensions and Plugins, but they may not always be free.
WordPress was always just thought of as a blogging platform, but it has evolved in to much more than that and you can now create stunning looking websites with blogs - there are a good range of free templates to choose from and if you want your blog on the front page of your site you can have this, or you can change it to another part of your site if you want a static front page.  To extend functionality you can download plugins from inside WordPress itself, most of which are free.  This might be the easiest one for you to use if you just want a website with a built in blog that is relatively easy.
Check out the others though at Drupal.org, Joomla.org and then WordPress.org.

  • Is the huge light on PS4 controller really needed, it looks like a huge batter drainer?

That huge light for the new PS4 cntroller really needed just to identify which player is which?? It looks like a major battery drainer compared to the simpler red dots on the ps3 controller.
Also, why are the analog sticks not smooth like the ps3 controller? Those analog sticks resemble and may feel alot like an xbox controller, I would rather preffer it smooth like the ps3 controller.

  • Fan replacements/upgrade for MDD Power Mag G4-suggestions please!

First, I apologize for again bringing up what has been a frequently discussed topic. (ad nauseum?) I tried to do some homework first but I'd like a little help if anyone has some recent experience.
I am looking to change out the large main CPU heat sink fan and possibly the two power supply unit fans in my pair of MDD Power Mac G4s. The specs are Dual 1.25ghz (fw400) MDD G4. One has a 400watt actel PSU and another has a samsung 360watt PSU. Both large CPU case fans seem to be the original delta models installed by apple. Though essentially identical in specs, The 400 watt machine has the thick aluminum finned heat sink and the 360 watt machine has the aluminum heat sink with the thin sheets. The 400 watt machine is definitely louder, but I'm not using either of them for critical audio work, so its just a preference thing on having them run a bit quieter.
Both G4s are pretty loud. The noise bothers me a little, but what I really want to do is to replace what must be now pretty old delta fans with newer, quieter fans that will help extend the life of these 2nd hand computers that I plan to use for a number of years.
I scoured the web and read many articles about MDD mods and fan replacements, but many of the articles date back to 2003 and most of the fans that people have used seem to be no longer produced or available (such as the panaflow model referenced on xlr8yourmac.com I ran into many dead links! Maybe that's because there are better fan options now?
If anyone out there has replaced or upgraded their fans in a MDD recently, could you please reply and let me know...
    Where you got them
What size and model number(s) for the fans
Whether you noticed any improvement in noise/cooling
I saw a recent post about replacing fans on an AGP Power Mac...
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11628216#11628216
Would these fans be the same? I'm guessing that the MDD wind tunnel might need more cooling than a G4 (AGP) right? SOme places mentioned that the main fans were 119x119x25, while others mentioned that hey were 120x120x25. Is 1mm going to make a difference? I'd prefer not to have to dremel them if I don't need to!
Lastly, if you have a direct link to a reasonably priced fan that you'd recommend, I'd appreciate it greatly!
    Thanks for any help!
    Dave C

    Thanks Japamac!
Thanks for your replies! Those look very good! So many to choose...
Exactly the info I was looking for. I was checking out the panaflow (I was a bit overwhelmed by the number of choices on the 'Performance-pcs' website... if you were buying, which one of those 34 would you get? Assuming a budget of 20 bucks per 120mm fan...)
But a followup question on the Panaflo model you linked to. In the many web articles I read I recall that one being well regarded. ,IF I buy that one, I have a few choices on tail options...
    3 pin
    4 pin
4 pin male molex with separate 3 pin rpm connector
Am I correct that if I opt for the last option I can get the fan to run at a medium rpm all the time and have it be less likely to ramp up under heavy loads?
Lastly, will this possibly be a problem I might have, simiar to what was noted by a xlr8yourmac fan modder -->
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/g4mirrored_drive_doors/noise_reduction/g4_ddr_noisereduction.html
    "(Updated comments added 7/9/2009)
I have an important update to that G4 fan mod note I gave you.
I noticed that the 120mm fan wasn't pushing as much air as I thought it should, and I realized it was because the 2-pin fan connector on the motherboard wasn't providing enough power. +(3 pin connectors typically are for adjustable/variable speeds. But if it's a constant speed fan then maybe the 2 pin wiring was using only 5V vs 12V? (higher voltage = higher rpm fan speed typically)-Mike)+ I put the 3-pin connector back on and used a 3 to 4 pin Molex adapter adapter to connect it to the 4-pin hard drive power cables -- voila! Lots more air. So... Following the directions in the older article exactly may NOT work depending on the fan you get. Also, using a 3 to 4 pin adapter is much easier than modifying the connector from 3 to 2 pins as indicated in the article."
This was confusing because I thought that there was just a 3 wire lead to connect or splice, with the yellow wire probably just not being used.
    Your thoughts?
    Dave C
