Fan running.. "kernel root" and "WindowServer"

pllleeeeaassee help!!!
my fan wont stop running, and when i go to activitiy monitor, the processes "kernel root" and "WindowServer" are both taking up almost 60% of my CPU each... i've already tried resetting the PMU and PRAM... but when i dont think the PMU is successfully resetting, because i always have the correct time and date when i boot up again..?
what do i do???

my bad.. the file name is "kernel_task", not kernel root... "root" is the user though
i've repaired the permissions... also, i'm not running my computer from the adaptor alone, no battery... so the fan has quit running (since no battery) yet these two operations are still sucking the CPU like mad outta me.... what are they working so hard on? and how can i get them to stop?

I suspect you didn't reset it right.
Turn off the machine, let it charge up and then try the SMC reset again.

  • Satellite A300D - Fan running very loud and notebook is getting very hot

I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction as what to do with the overheating problem i currently have with my A300D. I have had the laptop for under a year so it is still under warrenty but i am not sure where to go or what to do in order to repair it.
The problem: Around two months ago I noticed the fan running very loud and also the laptop becoming very hot. Now it runs so hot the laptop switches itself off completly. The heat being fanned out of the laptop is so hot! burns your my infact.
Has any one any advice they could offer me.
    Thanks
    James

    Hi James
You wrote that you have the notebook under a year so my questions is did you already clean it?
The notebook should be cleaned every 3-4 months and I do this every 3 months. Every time I do it Im wondering how much dust comes out and after this procedure the notebook is a lot of cooler.
Here is an interesting Toshiba article about this:

Compressed air spray is really useful and you should check it yourself!!! ;)

  • Fan runs on HIGH and won't wake from sleep--it freezes!

I have a G5 (Power PC, g5, Dual 1.8 GHZ with 1.25 GB SDRAM, and Mac OS X 10.4.10-phew!) and I recently: added more USB ports using a PCI card, and purchased a non-Apple 22" widescreen display.
Prior to adding USB ports, I was using a hub that ran off its own power source, and used a Samsung 19" monitor.
My situation now: everything starts up fine, but ultimately the fan will kick in at SUPER HIGH and won't stop. I can put my Mac to sleep--which stops the fan noise--but then it won't wake up.
I have run the Apple Hardware test and everything checks out OK. I've also reset the SMU according to directions from this forum; AND I've vacuumed out all the dust bunnies.
The fan runs so loud and so high it sounds like it's an airplane that's about to take off.
Short of bringing in my Mac to a technician, can you recommend anything? My Mac has been glitch free up until now.

I have a G5 (Dual 1.8/2.5GBSDRAM,10.3.9) that I'm worried about. After stepping away from my machine for an hour, I came back to it and it sounded like the fans were about to blow they were revving so high! My screen was frozen and non-responsive, so I did an immediate shutdown via the power button. I let it sit for an hour or so and it would not reboot (Got the power on chime but nothing...except the three repetitive quick pulses of light from the power button). I knew that it meant it was a RAM issue. Did the old unplug trick and SMU button trick, nothing. Have 2 original 256MB and 2 6mo old 1GB pairs. Pulled the #2 pair then booted (failed), then swapped the #2's and seated in #1's slots...no luck, still get the three flashes on the power button.
All the RAM was seated firmly...so I don't think it's the RAM. Am I looking at a logic board or power supply failure? Is there an alternative I'm missing?

  • HP Pavilion a6110n Startup Problems, Fan Runs Full Tilt and then Shuts Down

We are currently running into an issue where our computer, when we try to power it on, turns on briefly with the fan running at full tilt.  After a few seconds, the computer then shuts down and everything turns off.  When the monitor is connected, we never do see anything show up there.  We opened up the case and cleaned out the fan and the cooling unit completely, and then we even completely removed and then reconnected the unit.  Still, the computer continues to do the same thing.  Does this sound like a bad sensor?  Like the computer thinks it is overheating and just shuts itself down?
Thanks for any help.  We tried some of the advice we found on here, like stated above, and seem to have run out of options.

    Hi Big_Mike_180,
It is the same for the desktop or notebook. The one blink means that you are having an issue with the CPU, unfortunately. At this point if you are in warranty give HP Total Care a call at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or visit the link below if you are outside North America.

Or take it to a local tech to check the CPU.

  • Sleeping G5 often makes fans run full blast and machine unresponsive

the only thing new lately is that I installed Leopard 10.5.3 on my dual 2.0 GHz G5 tower.
I usually sleep my machine all the time
now it's a crapshoot whenever I sleep it whether or not it will go to sleep normally, or freeze in a state of screenless unresponsiveness with the fans running on full blast with no way to stop except a hard shut down or power kill
other than this the machine is literally working just fine. Never interferes with my work.
I don't know if this is 10.5.3 related or not, but I do wonder.
I started up from an applecare disc and did a full diagnostic and everything checked out
I guess I'll have to test Tiger sometime again but that'll be a pain because I'm already addicted to Leopard
I just hope this old faithful tower isn't going dead on me. and I wish there was some official word if this was just a 10.5 thingy

I believe I have solved this problem for now.
I opened up my G5 and used compressed air to blow out all the months of dust buildup in the machine.
I re-seated every single removable component inside (RAM, PCI cards, graphics card, etc)
I also pushed the PMU reset button once and then put the machine back together.
I proceeded to sleep it and wake it up about 5 times in a row, and it didn't exhibit the blowing fans problem and the light was "snoring" as it normally should in sleep mode.
A few days later, the machine hung up after being put to sleep AGAIN with the fans kicking up and the light on my cinema display staying one dim level without the "snoring."
This time I disconnected my Belkin USB hub and I have not seen the problem resurface since.
The interesting thing is that cleaning out the machine and resetting the PMU sure seemed to help.
So maybe it was a combination of things that were the culprits.
I also wonder if I can ever use this perfectly good and only 1 year old Belkin USB 2.0 hub ever again.
My father uses the same model on 10.5.4 as well on his MacPro without any problems. I am on a G5.
I wonder if there's a firmware on the Belkin USB hub that could be in need of upgrading or if I simply cannot use this hub w/ this computer anymore.
(luckily I don't need it urgently right now)
I will report back if the problem happens again, but for now, since the computer has been sleeping totally fine for days now since removing the USB hub, I am marking this question as answered and hope that this info can help other people.
If anyone has anything to add to this thread or knows about the specifics I've discussed above, please feel free to respond more.
    Thank you

  • Fans running full blast and CPU

    Hi,
I have a late 2003, early 2004 dual 2.0 ghz G5,1 gig ram running OS x 10.4.7. Everything has been fine up until a few weeks ago the fans started running at full speed when the system was on, no variation, just full speed. I ran the hardware test disc and I get the following error, 28 seconds into the test,----2SAM/1/3:CPU B AD 7417 AD4 post/2176/0---
I have talked to a service centre close by and they have told me that the CPU is bad and needs replacemwnt to correct the fan problem. Everything runs normally as it used to, sleep, wake, all function fine. Do I need a new CPU or is their something else causing the problem??

    Hi DS,
Thank you for your quick reply and insight.
I do not have the full version of Hardware Monitor as of yet, just ordered it tonight so will have it very soon and then will be able to have full info. The demo version gives me the following info.
    1) CPU A die temp--28.8 degrees celsius
    2) CPU B Die Temp--29.1 degrees "
    3) Drive Bay-------24.0 degrees "
    4) Main Logic Board air inlet---24.0 degrees "
    5) Main Logic Board ambient--27.6 degrees "
    6) Main logic board backside--27.0 degrees "
    7) Memory controller heatsink--31.8 degrees "
    8) Processor Card A Ambient---26.5 degrees "
    9) Processor Card B Ambient---26.0 Degrees "
    10) Smart Disc Temp----26.0 degrees"
This is after the system has been running for the better part of an hour with the room temp. at 65 degrees Fahenheight. Programs running at the same time that these temperatures where taken are as follows-- Quark express, Garage Band, Aperature, MS word, Illustrator 10,Firefox, Filemaker Pro. With all those programs running activity monitor for CPU reads as follows--
    % user--3.5
    % system--2.0
    % nice--O
    % idle---94.5
System memory shows as having 330 mb free at the same time
Fan speed is a constant " turbo" sound, no variation in speed or sound, very loud.
It would seem that as you have suggested that I am getting a false reading from the Apple Hardware test as all readings seem to OK.What do you suggest that I try to do to bring the fan speed down to a normal level? It would seem that the dual CPU's are OK and that something else is causing the problem?? Would you agree? Appreciate any help that you can suggest.
    Thanks Much
Machine is a 2.0 ghz ,dual processor G5, I gig memory, ATI video, model #-M9032ll/A, late 2003, early 2004 production.

  • Why is my macbook pro fan running so frequently and staying so hot?

It seems like recently my MacBook Pro 5 has issues with being too hot.  Is this a result of keeping too many applications open?
    Thanks,

Make sure nothing is blocking the vents.
According to the user manual it states in part:"Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings."
MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
"Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn."

  • 2010 MacBook White is unstable, fan runs all the time and wifi adapter randomly quits

I have a 2010 white MacBook running OSX 10.8.2 and last week rather randomly it became unstable.  The fan runs nearly constantly and intermittently it does not recognize the WiFi adpater on start-up and has to be rebooted.  Also sometimes after 15-20 minutes of use internet connection is lost.  The WiFi adpater is still connected to the LAN, and recognizes other devices on my network, but cannot connect to any local device or the internet (Mail, Safari, or Chrome).
    Any ideas?

This sort of helped.   Here is what happened:
Upon the first boot after resetting the SMC, the MacBook indicated there was "no WiFi hardware installed."
Shut down the MacBook and waited 15 seconds then started - it recognized the WiFi hardware and indicated a connection to my local network, however none of the local devices could be found and the internet was not connected.
Restarted the MacBook to the same results as the previuos shut down/start up.
Shut down the MacBook and waited for 15-30 seconds.  Upon pressing the power button only the indicator LED on the lower right side of the body illuminated solid and nothing else happened.
I had to then press and hold the power button for 3-5 seconds for the LED to go out.
I pressed the power button and the MacBook started (very slowly).  I gave it a few moments after the desktop appeared and the bars appropriately populated (WiFi indicator on the top bar looking good).  Internet and local devices connected and no fan  . . . yet.
My confidence is low, it's only be about 5 minutes, but will post again with an update . . .

  • Why is my fan running so loud?

I purchased my 13" macbook pro about 2-3 weeks ago, But have noticed just recently my fan running quiet loud and constantly. I have done two smc resets that didn't change anything, checked my activity monitor to find nothing wrong, and checked my exhaust rpm and temperatures which were perfectly normal. Does anyone have any other information that would help me fix this frustrating problem?

You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - You have the standard one year Apple warranty.
#4 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years.   You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • HP Pavilion dv6 2122eo fan running almost constantly

On my now 12 month old HP dv5 2122eo running windows 7 64-bit home edition, the fan runs almost constantly, and has done so since purchase, even without any load on the pc.
Installed programme Core Temp to see temperatures, and the fan runs even at a temp. of 41C. Bios has a function to disable fan from running all the time, but even after disabling this in Bios, the fan still runs almost constantly. Would be grateful for any help/suggestions. This seems to be a problem for this pc when searching for solutions on the Web.

    Andrew,
You can't control the fan speed/function directly on HP laptops.  If you haven't updated the BIOS then try that.  Also, here's some other stuff to try.

  • Powerbook G4 12" won't start up after fan running all night

I woke this morning to hear the fan running very fast and loud. The display was opened, so I quickly shut off the computer by holding down power button and then closed the display. After waiting a couple of hours, I turned on the power button and a faint blue desktop light appeared with a small folder icon containing a blinking question mark alternating with the apple faces icon. It doesn't go away. The battery is fully charged.
    Please help! Thanks!

That means that your system can't find anything to boot from. If you have your original OS X disks, put in the one that says 'AHT Version x.x' on the gray label in small print, and reboot holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. Does that tell you anything?
Another task is to reboot with the first system OS X disk in, and reboot holding the 'C' key, to boot from DVD. On the menu bar, choose Disk Utility, and first aid and repair the hard drive. Does this complete or give you any error messages?
    Reset your PRAM:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
If there are any Apple hardware test messages, please post back what they are.
If you are unable to use Disk Utility, or get an error message on not completing the task due to failure ... , your hard drive may be toast.

  • Everything runs als Root, can someone give me a hand for the system rights?

yeah I screwed up big times because of this neat unknow_user "Feature" in Leopard.
First i installed a os 10.4 app under leopard which let the disk utility slow down and the finder crashes if i change the user rights, and then i changed globally the group and user of everything in the application folder and my documents folder with pathfinder for looking if i can solve the problem that way.
-But now everything runs as Root and even the hd itself has a owner root and as group admin.
i don't get the difference between system, root, admin, wheel, username for the owner and group. I googled but found nothing clear about this.
And i also wonder what i should do about the group and the meaning of root, system, admin, wheel, username as a group for a single user system. Where should i give a read, read&write and execute permission for example?
at the moment everything seems to run mostly root and every program runs on root and i think this is the worst think that can happen and causes some trouble for the programs.
Can someone give me a short hand and for example tell me if i should set the hd owner to my username and the group to system or admin or whatever and this also for the application and documents/film and other stuff on my user folder?
    that would be great
I think i have to reinstall leopard, but as long as this unknow_user problem still resist and no patch is available, i see the same thing happen again and again for me, so a little help would be great
