Fan Runs Continuously

My fan started running continuously after using the computer to stream a movie to HDTV via an HDMI port. I loaded SpeedFan and my temps are not high (40-48 C). Customer support had me update WinFlash, reinstall power management, and install ICH9 Chipset. This didn't work. There's no dust in the way. Any ideas? Thanks.

Are you saying that after this the FAN runs all the time now?
You can change the "fan always on " setting in F10 Setup..
Just hit F10 when you see the HP logo on startup and make the changes..
This will depend on what model you have

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

Fans run continuously @ 6000rpms

I just got a new 17" Unibody 2.66 and the fans run continuously at 6000rpm.
For example, right now they are running at 6000 w/ temps of:
CPU A - 35
GPU - 36
GPU Diode - 38
GPU Heatsink - 30
This is on a clean install with only Safari running.
What's the deal?

There could be some problem that doesn't show up on the AHT, like maybe a loose mounting screw or some tape interfering with the air flow or something along those lines. The fans should be silent when idling. So my guess is that there is still something wrong, but it will take someone actually opening it up and looking. It sounds like a mechanical problem of some sort.
Ironically, "mooing" was a problem with the first original MBP's that came out.
I think it's time to take your MBP into an Apple Store or call Apple to have this looked at.

Fans run continuously on my iMac(1 day old)

I don't know whether anyone might be able to assist, but the fans run continuously on my barnd new 27" iMac.
I have upgarded the HD to 3 TB anf the ram to 12 GB.
I have reset the smc some 4 times.
I do not know what else to do.
Any suggestions are most welcome.

I second Paul_31. If you haven't called Apple by the time you read this, you ought to do it now. You have a brand new machine. Don't try any more "fixes" until you call Apple.
Equally as important, whether they replace the machine of fix the one you have, you really ought to consider purchasing Apple Care. It extends the warranty to 3 years and gives you access to tech support for the additional time period at no cost.

Fan runs continuously after Update to Leopard

Hi,
after updating my macbook pro to leopard after a few minutes the fan runs continuously. I think the problem is the bluetooth process, which consumes 56 % of the cpu. The bluetooth firmeware is 2.1.0f17. I have installed the latest updates 10.5.3.
Can anybody help?

Welcome to the Forums!
Assuming you're using Activity Monitor to identify the offending process, you can quit the process from there. Does it return after a reboot?

AHT is locate into your original grey CD , try run and report any error may help to understand your problem
AHT could be run to hold on at start up "D" key on keyboard , depend on your imac model / system version

Macbook fan runs continually with Zynga games...

My wife reports that her Macbook fan runs continually when playing Zynga games...internet games in facebook. I watched her, and it's true...if she quits the game the fan stops. Is this a potential problem? Seems that's all she does on that laptop... I suggested she stop playing the games, but that advice will not be heeded:) thx.

Fan runs continuously on my Powerbook G4

I remember buying my Powerbook G4 Titanium back and then reading the review after I already had the computer at home. The review complained that the Powerbook ran hot.
This has been my experience. I can't hold it in my lap without a pillow to buffer the heat and the power button is hot enough to hurt a little if you hold your finger on it.
The real issue now (I can't remember how long this has been a problem, seems like years) is that I can hear the fan run continuously and it makes a loud whistle. It's distracting enough that I can't take my laptop into a library without disturbing everyone else.
Has this been your experience? I know G4 PBs have run hot from the beginning, but am I stuck with this noisy fan? I don't know if a new fan will be any quieter or what to do with this thing. I'd hate to replace the fan (that can't be cheap) and find that I still deal with the same distracting noise.
By the way, the fan runs right from startup, even before the computer has gotten hot.

ps, By the way, I've opened Activity Monitor and there is nothing using up the %cpu. I'm at about 20% of capacity with two or three apps open.

Hi John,
No, I suspect that is not correct. The fan is simply a motor. It either runs or it doesn't. If it does, it is functioning properly. If it runs when it is not supposed to, the fan "controller" is not functioning properly. If the fan controller and the fan ARE functioning properly, then the logic board itself is running too hot for some reason, which, in your case, I suspect is the truth.
TiBooks (and some others) have long had heat issues. I have long suspected that it wasn't the actual design, but that some part of the very complicated/integrated physical system had been compromised. In many cases (and possibly yours), I suspect it's a breakdown of either the heat sink itself, or, more likely, the heat paste that "connects" the heat sink to the CPU (and, depending on the laptop, other heat sinks as well); thus, the path which the heat is supposed to take, from CPU (or elsewhere) to the heat sink/and/or fan, is "broken" and the heat cannot dissipate as well as it should. Hence, the fan runs on and on. My .02, fwiw.

Portege R500 connected to mains - fans runs continuously

Have an R500 for some months now and the more i use it the more the fan is giving on my nerves even in the lowest whisper.
And it is really a pity because from any other aspect i love this machine.
My solution is to try to use it always on battery instead plugged because if plugged the fan runs continuously even when the temperature is below 50 celsius while on battery even if it reaches 60 it isn't spinning at all.
So could you please tell me if there is any solution to fool it and while plugged make it believe it is on battery?

If you are writing about power saver mode or power saver plan in power settings it is not the same what Jaba wrote.
To set cooling fan to lower method please do follow:
Control Panel > Power Options > Balanced Change Plan settings > Change Advanced power settings > Toshiba Power Saver Settings > Cooling Method > Plugged in set it to Battery Optimized.
I have done the same on my notebook and it runs quieter as before.
Please test it on your Portege notebook.

Thunderbolt Display fan runs continuously in sleep mode

I have a new Thunderbolt display and new Macbook Pro 15" just setup.
I have been running in clamshell mode without any problems, but when I put the Macbook to sleep, the fan inside the Thunderbolt Display starts running quite loudly. When entering sleep, the display goes black and seems to be off, but after a few seconds the fan starts up and I can feel a stream of air coming out from under the display (the screen stays black).
The Macbook itself seems to be sleeping ok (the led on the side slowly flashes).
The fan in the display seems to run continuously at high speed: I left it in sleep overnight, and the fan was still running in the morning.
When I wake up the Macbook, the screen turns on and then the fan cuts back to normal (quiet) levels.
The various Thunderbolt software updates were all installed OK yesterday but didn't make any difference (the problem was there before and after installation).
(I also noticed that if I just plug in the power to the display, without the macbook cables connected, the fan will also run at high speed and never turn off, thought the screen itself seems to be off.)
Anyone else experiencing this or have any ideas how I can fix it?

I hope you guys can get Apple to replace the display.
I have now received my replacement display and it works fine. No fan when the computer is sleeping or when the TB cable is disconnected.
If you are going to pick up a replacement screen in a store (or if you are buying a new one), I'd suggest you ask them to unpack it and plug it in while you are still in the store. This particular problem seems to be apparent within about 30 seconds of the power being plugged in (make sure no computer is connected to the Thunderbolt port).
The store is often noisy and it may be difficult to hear the fan. So to test it, hold your hand under the bottom edge on the left side of the display (as you face the front of the screen) and see if you can feel the air stream from the fan (you will need them to peel back the plastic wrapping from that edge first, otherwise the vent is blocked). The fan does not turn on straight away when you plug in. I found it can take 30 seconds or so to start up. With the faulty display, the blast of air is quite obvious to feel.
I bought another Thunderbolt display recently (at an authorised dealer, not an Apple Store) and made sure that they let me do this check before accepting it. Fortunately it was completely silent and no fan started running when the power was plugged in. They initially thought I wanted to check the screen itself, so at first they had it plugged in to a Macbook to show something on the screen, and they thought it was odd I wanted to check the display without anything connected - they hadn't heard of this fan problem before.

Imac (Intel based) fan runs continuously and loudly.

Have done a SMC reset, and the fan is still running loudly and continuously. Only 1 application open - firefox. This has been an ongoing, continuous problem.

Have had the same problem .. have reset the PRAM & SMC, doubled the amount of RAM. Fans runs & Activity Monitor shows most of RAM is used up with nothing open. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a Mac Book with 4g of RAM, Apple Support showed no hardware problems. ????

10.5.7 Update Correlates With Fans Running Continually

After updating to 10.5.7, my MacBook's fans seem to run continually.
If I Restart, they will stop for about 10 minutes, then return to continual running.
As possible solutions, I tried:
- zapping the PRAM,
- reinstalling the update.
Neither worked.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Do you know what temperature your MB is running at?
Is anything blocking the air inlets or outlets?
If that fails you might turn Activity Monitor and see if anything is running that might elevate the temperature.

Latest Leopard upgrade makes fan run continuously

After doing the latest Leopard upgrade, the fan on my G5 now runs continuously. It always would come on for a bit, then stop for a much longer period. Anyone know of a way to stop this, short of reinstalling the old original Leopard, and never again doing upgrades? Thanks for any help

Well, I do recall that activity monitor trick working well for fixing a laptop that ran all the time. It was looking for a printer that wasn't there. But the SMU trick is new for me. I didn't know the exact age, but pull the fan etc out and found the button. Actually the button said PMU (not SMU) reset, and I pressed it and restarted the computer. The fan was off for a while, but then it came back. I may try it again, since it seemed to have some effect.

S12-ION Fan running continuously.

Hi all,
Dunno if this is an problem or not - I have an S12-ION and just recently it's started running the fan all the time (irrespective of CPU load).
Is this a sign of a heat problem?
And, if so, is there anything I can try doing to rectify it?
Or should I just not worry?
(It didn't used to do this - previously the fan would only spin up under high CPU load, now it's spinning all the time)

Actually, again, having thought about this some more...
Why?
Why on earth would I want to uninstall my virus scanner?
And leave my netbook vulnerable to attack?
Because the fan's spinning?
Maybe this makes sense in the world of laptops/netbooks - I dunno this is my first laptop/netbook - but, it seems rather like cutting off ones nose to spite one's face.
Also, if it were a software/update issue, wouldn't it just reappear when I reinstall???
So what would I achieve by doing a recovery and re-install, other than wasting my time?
Or is it a case of windows getting clogged up, and so using more cpu's cycles, and so the fan runs more?
Could anyone else confirm that doing a restore and reinstalls is worth doing?
I'd rather not spend days doing something that's not going to make any difference.
But, I'd also rather not ignore something and put it off, just because I don't understand why it should be that way.
And, please don't take offense at this, yigit, but, "reinstall everything" sounds like the sort of advice someone that doesn't actually know what they're talking about would give.

I am assuming that you have one of the new 802.11ac Time Capsules ... correct? If so, the internal fan on these base stations are thermally controlled and would run when required.
This would, most likely, mean one of at least two things: 1) The ambient temperature around the TC is too high, or 2) The thermal circuit that controls the fan is faulty.
Be sure that you are providing adequate space around the TC for proper cooling and that you are placing it on a flat surface as the fan exhaust is on the bottom of the unit.
