Fan speed + CPU temperature displayed wrong?

Hey guys. I've been writing my bachelors thesis on my Mac for about a month now so it's been on pretty much non-stop. The thing is that I mainly use Office Word. So no flash and stuff that would make the fan speed up that fast. It's not hot in my room either. Thing is that it is possible that there is some dust there and I will check that out once I'm done with this thesis.
I have SMC Fan Control and SSD Fan Control installed. The rpm is very often (80% of the time) up to 6500rpm. It shows the same rpm on SMC F.C. and SSD F.C.. What I don't understand is why the two different programs show a 30degrees celsius (86 fahrenheit) difference. SMC often shows the temp. above 105 degrees celsius (221 fahrenheit) whereas SSD will say it's 75 celsius (167 fahrenheit) at the same time. Also 105 celsius really doesn't sound good.
On the top right you can see SMC with 83 celsius and the open program is SSD with 55 celsius
Do you guys know these programs? Do you understand the difference shown in the display?
Thank you!!

no worries.....i was just checking if anyone knew if a kernel compile was avoidable, becasue once you do it once you have to keep on comiling the kernel if you want a new one.....oh well it doesn't seem that i'll have this problem as it doesn;t look like the patches are updaed very often
hang on what am i talking about, this is why i'm using arch linux.....to be a nerd and do everything by hand....;)
Oh and i did have a proper read through the README file and no mention of any dependancies is made (is was quite a short readme file whose only useful information was "do ./configure , make , make install"

  • IMac (early 2009), 3.06 GHz, ATI 4850 - fan speed and temperature questions

Well, so I downloaded and installed Temperature Monitor and iMac Fan Control - mainly for observational purposes and not for toying around with the fan speeds and I've got some questions. Mind you, I haven't tampered at all with the fan speed settings, just installed Fan Control. Here are my readings (while browsing the internet with Safari and doing a chat via iChat):
    Fan Speeds:
CPU fan (desired) 1300 RPM / (current) 1530 RPM
HD fan (desired) 2100 RPM / (current) 2099 RPM
    DVD fan (desired) 1300 / 1298 RPM
    Temperatures:
    CPU Heatsink: 92°F
    Internal HD: 108°F
    Internal DVD: 95°F
    GPU Heatsink: 107°F
Are these, under the circumstances, normal readings?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Your welcome and no problem. I would say only the Apple engineers can tell you why the fans are set to those speeds however my best guess is the obvious they found those speeds the closest to keeping the temps at an optimum operating temperature. I found when I'm doing graphics intensive work my machine heats up but quickly cools down when I'm done.

  • Real time fan speed and temperature of the Thunderbolt Display

Is there software program that allows you to know the real time speed of the itnernal fan of the Thunderbolt display. Also I would like to monitor the internal temp of the TBD.  I have Istat which allows me to do both but only for my MBPro not my montior.
    Thanks.

Have you ever cleaned you machine? Since it's an iSight (which is actually 3rd generation, Ambient Light is the 2nd, Rev A the 1st), you can't open it but you can vacuum the air vents, which might help.

  • Increasing fan speed and temperature

my temperatures and fan speeds are slowly getting higher and louder on my imac g5 2nd gen (17", w/isight, 1.9ghz). i've never noticed my fans before. the only time i ever used to notice my imac made any noise at all was in the dead of night when i shut it down and noticed the absence of noise. but a couple of months ago i started being able to hear the fans when i play world of warcraft. since then, they have slowly gotten louder and louder, and they allow my cpu temp to get higher and higher before it stops rising.
before i could hear the fans i never noticed the temp, but after i started hearing them, my cpu temp usually maxed out at around 148º. now it is allowed to get to 167º and stay there while i play wow. and the fans are so loud i have to use headphones to be able to hear the game. simply surfing the internet now causes higher temperatures and fan speeds than playing WoW did a month ago.
should i take it to a service technician to see if anything is wrong with it?

  • Fan Speeds and Temperatures 24" iMac 2.8GHz

What are the default fan speeds for a 24" iMac 2.8 GHz?
Also, what are the 'normal' temperatures for this computer?

The default iMac profile is the best for general use. For calibration get a Spyder 3 Pro: http://spyder.datacolor.com/product-mc-s3pro.php

    Hi There,
I have an all in one desktop PC, Model is 600-1170a, Product Number is: VT558AA-ABG, OS is win7 home Premium Pack 1. it restarts itself after continuous running for several hours, I installed SpeedFan v4.50 software and found speed of fan2 is 0, Temp1 is -128degree, which is impossible, could anyone of you who has same/similar pc please install same software and tell me these 2 parameters?
    speed of fan1 & 3 is normal, about 2000rpm.
BTW, I opened the back cover and only found 2 fans on the mother board.
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

    Hi,
128 degrees?  The only time that I have seen 128c is with the OCZ Vertex 3 SSD and this is a design flaw.
I am not a fan of Speed Fan as it has a history of being buggy.

  • Is the Mac App Store down ? / Fan Speed, CPU Temp problem ?

I tried to enter the App Store, this dialog box came up:
I had to reinstall my OS and programs as things started to go "Haywire". Would have this affected the App Store program on my mac ?
When thing went "Haywire" I noticed the fan running very fast. While I was reinstalling the OS from TC the fan was still running fast for about 15 minutes.
I did a screen shot of iStat Pro to show that the fan went up to 5,485 RPM and the CPU got to 79 Degrees Celcius.
Could this have damaged anything { Software / Hardware } ?
I know I may be a bit paranoid about this, but I have spent a lot of money on my mac and want to take every precaution to make it last as long as possible.

    UPDATE
I was in the middle ( 567 MB ) of downloading the Mac OS X 10.7.3 Supplemental Update when my mac "crashed". When I restarted the download had gone 'pear shaped'.
I clicked on the App Store icon in the Dock and the App Store opened with no problems.
While I was trying to download the Mac OS X 10.7.3 Supplemental Update the fan was still going fast ( around 4900 RPM )
This still has me worried, but I will see how things go before sending it in to be looked at.

  • Y730 Game Zone Temp and Fan Speed Display

I've got a Y730 that I'm having issues troubleshooting.  Currently the fan runs full speed and the display for Fan Speed and CPU temp on the Game Zone don't register anything.  I've tried running some apps that are suppose to read and display fan information and they also don't pick anything up.
I'm a little confused about what is going on because both the temp and the fan speed aren't displayed. Does all this information come from the fan or could there be something else that is causing the issue?

USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.
    Cheers

  • Macbook Pro Retina Fan Speed with 3 vs 2 external displays

    Hello,
When I'm in my home office, I often use my MacBook Pro Retina in Clamshell Mode (in a BookArc) with external displays.
Originally, I used 2 external displays (2x 1920x1800), and the fan speed and temperature remained stable at the lowest end of the spectrum (around 2200rpm and 60°C). However, recently I decided to use all the ports available and plug in an extra monitor (1680x1050) for that extra screen real estate. I can tell you that having three external monitors really makes a difference to my productivity. However, just by adding this extra display, the fan speed boosts up to a minimum of 4500rpm and often goes up to around 6000rpm. The temperature is also high (I guess the fan speed is a symptom of this).
I understand that the extra pixels in the 3rd monitor could definately tax the GPU more. However, I am suprised that the fan speed and GPU temperatures go so high, especially as all I am doing is moving around on a Preview PDF file, just from adding the extra monitor (especially with it's modest resolution).
    I guess my questions are:
Is this expected behaviour for the rMBP?
Is this going to damage my rMBP with extended use (say, a good 6-8 hours pretty much every day for the next few years)?
    Thanks very much,
    Richard

I've managed to get the fan speed down to a reasonable, less audible level by using that old VRAM terminal command to enable me to keep the internal display disabled whilst the lid is open. I've had to shift quite a lot round on my desk to make this happen, but I guess it was the only way. It now runs 3 screens under similar loads at approximately 3500prm.
Taking your advice into consideration, I raised the rear feet and this enabled further decrease in fan speed. I guess one of those laptop stands will augment this effect, and I will look into them.
Anyway, thank you for your help!
    Thanks,
    Richard

  • K8N Neo4 Setup - Issues Adjusting CPU Fan Speed - Alarm Going Off

    Building this PC for a friend, and I just got it to post.  Everything seems to be running stable, only when I get into the CoreCenter, the CPU Fan alarm is going off and the speed is flashing red.  It is currently running at about 820 RPM, but the CPU temp is sitting at 37'C and the sys temp is 32'C.  Is this too hot, is the fan speed way too low, I'm somewhat new to this.  I set it to Cool'n'Quiet and it still does it, I disable Cool'n'Quiet and try to increase CPU fan speed manually, and it won't increase.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  The rig is setup as follows;
    MSI K8N Neo4
    AMD 64 3000+
    Kingston 512MB DDR400
    80GB Seagate ATA
    nVidia GeForce 6600GT 128MB
    Antec NeoPower 480W

You can adjust the alarm level by clicking the little red arrow(Hardware monitor option) on the right side of Core Center, move the slider for CPU Fan Speed Alarm to the left(set it to 500-600rpm), and click OK.
Now you shouldn't get alarms any more.
The fan speed and temperatures you report are very similar to what I see on my system at idle. The fan shold begin to run faster if the system is under load for some time.

  • Toshiba L750-A218 BIOS 3.30, Fan Speed

Hi, here is a new issue I am experiencing after the BIOS update. I feel the internal fans are spinning all the time by placing my hands near the keyboard. Fan speed according to Toshiba software is 50%+ while I am not doing anything. On the other hand, it was at 25% before the update. Did they update the BIOS to give the laptop more ventilation or something. This is weird. CPU temp is 45%. I have upgraded from 3.00 to 3.30, for your information. Thanks.
P.S. The fan speed is stuck at 50%+ and wont go lower than that. Its always on, I can feel it while resting my hands and typing.

Did you get any where with the fan issue? I've a L750-171 (UK), experiencing the same fan issue. Like you say even when idle, the CPU report around 45degrees (using Core Temp app) and using Toshiba Health app 45%. I think the processor is rated to max 100 degrees so % and degrees map up one to one. Anyway the fan never drops below 50%. My complaint is the noise. I use my laptop in a quiet room so it's pretty annoying. My other tosh laptop doesn't whine like this.
The only fan related option I've adjusted is via the "power options" control panel applet.Clicking "change plan settings" then "Change advanced power settings" scroll down to "Toshiba Power Saver Settings v8.9.4.64. From here open "Cooling Methods" and then changed "Plugged in:" to "Battery Optimized" - I was hoping this would reduce the fan speed but didn't seem to have any effect.
I've updated my BIOS from 2.7 to 3.4 - same issue continues.
I've looked at the bios settings, but see nothing related to fan speed and temperature.
    Thanks

    Hello,
Would it be possible (with a donation for sure) to setup fan strategy (CPU temperature that starts fan spinning or minimal RPM on idle) ?
Why a tool like speedfan canno't set fan speed ? Is that bios fixable ?
    Thank you.

Could you send me an unlocked bios ?
    Thank you.
    received it.
unlocked BIOS will not help for FAN settings, cause its not controlled by it.
or you want unlocked BIOS too, along with custom FAN settings?

    So for fan speed settings
I will send you an PM query within 15 min, to choose what custom FAN settings you wish to apply.

  • Fan speed on Qosmio G30

    My laptop is Qosmio G30-126.
How can I know fan speed?
I've tried some soft with hw sensor monitor & fan speed but it's not show any think about speed fan just CPU temperature?
Where is the problem and what can I do?

    hi vip78,
if no 3rd party software can detect the fan speed due to "unknown chipset" there are two options or some more...
    - ask your software manufacturer to implement the used chipset, takes long if it will happen
    - test other software like mb5 maybe this one can detect this value
generally said: if a software cant detect the value of the fan speed
    - either the is the chipset not implemented in your preferred software
    - or the value isnt readable cause there is no interface that gives any values to read
it's only important that the bios gives the os some informations about the "heat"-status....
pls go to powersaver options, sure you will get no info bout fan speed, but who cares if your system is working properly!
check mb5, make sure you got the latest version!
    good luck

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum Fan Speed

I have a zalman 7000AlCu cooler and my system lowers the fan speed when temperatures drop.
    according to Corecell:
    CPU Temp: 35C
    SYS Temp: 44C
    FanSpeed: 1298RPM
Is there any way to lower the fan speed even more?
BTW: Bios 1.48b finally gave me reasonable temperature readouts. It used to 50C idle, but now that i have 1.48 they dropped to 35C idle
