Fan Speed off the Charts

I'm running a 15.4" 2.16 core 2 duo with 10.6.6.
Last week my fan(s) decided to start being really loud. Right now my CPU is 92% idle and I have 1.14 gb free of my 2gb of ram (according to activity monitor), but my fans are going an average of 6000rpm (according to SMC fan control). The computer is at 43 degrees celsius.
I have nothing set to turn up my fan speed. Any ideas?
Thanks

First thing is to see if a sensor has failed. Find your original system disk/s and use the one that is marked as bearing Apple Hardware Test. Instructions are here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Note that the fans will run high (6000 rpm max) while running AHT. That's normal. I set my MBP up on little spacers to allow air underneath during the test.
Most people don't have the translator for any error codes that might appear, but if you post the errors here, some may look familiar enough that one of us can take an educated guess. Errors with "SNS" embedded in the code are generally sensor codes.
There are several things you can do to investigate heat/fan issues:
1) See if any background processes are eating up CPU cycles. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor and launch it. IMPORTANT: change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "My Processes" to "All Processes." Some of the real culprits may not show if AM only checks user processes. There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage.
If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated.
2) Make certain your physical arrangement of the computer and your usage patterns are not contributing to overheating. Apple recommends against using the MBP on your lap or any surface that contacts the case bottom. The case bottom is part of the heat dissipation system and needs air. If you need to use the computer in your lap, make a simple lap board from scrap plywood. The height of the rubber feet is usually enough to let the air move but, if you are playing graphics-intensive games, you may want to insert some 1/2-inch (13mm) spacers, or get a powered chill pad to help move heat away.
The main exhaust vent is under the display hinge on the back panel of the case. It must not be obstructed.
Here is an Apple article on temps but it does not list critical temps for any model:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1778
For the silver-key MBPs, the safety shutdown to prevent heat damage is aout 100C/212F. Your 43C is well within the normal range and should no be making the fans go all out unless SMC Fan Control is set to do so.

  • How to control or know Fan Speed of the TBD

Hi, I Need to know how to control the Fan Speed of the Thunderbolt Display.
And the current temperature and the fan speed of the TBD.
    Thanks..

Not sure you can.  I have never seen any app that would do that.

  • Logic pro X CPU is off the chart since Yosemite

I'm having some Logic Pro X issues. The CPU usage is off the charts. CPU shows active when I'm not even playing a track. I have no other applications open. I have repaired permissions etc.  It's so bad that the CPU spikes if I play just one track of audio, and Logic will show "system unable to play back.." error. This really is ridiculous. Should I go back to the previous version of OS X? I'm out of ideas. Strangely, somedays it works just fine. As soon as I think the problem has past, it starts up again. I definitely seems like some kind of CPU or memory issue. Any help would be appreciated. I know my system is a little light but I've never had these issues before upgrading to Yosemite. And no, I foolishly don't really use time machine, so that's not an option either.

At the moment, Yosemite and LPX is not a recommended combination.... Many people have reported the same behavior of 10.10 and 10.0.7 working fine one day and then it all falls apart the next....
Nothing much you can do as you didn't make backups... which means you can't easily roll back to a previous configuration...
So, your only two choices are
    A) Manually backup your personal data/projects/photos/music etc... to an external HD and then wipe your System drive (assuming your recovery partition is still showing 10.9) and reinstall Mavericks from scratch... holding down Cmd + R at startup... Then reinstall LPX plus content plus any 3rd party plugins and libraries you use.
    or...
    B) Wait for a while (maybe quite a while) until Apple releases fixes for Yosemite and/orLPX to resolve these issues.... and put up with the current problems.
In the meantime, I suggest you start making backups using something like Time Machine or my preferred method which is using the HD cloning utility SuperDuper! as one day, you will need them.....

Not what you wanted to hear I'm sure.. but that's the current state of play.

  • Displaying a value "off the chart"

    Hi
    Hoping someone can help me.
I have a report which has an axis of 0% to 15% in increments of 5 (0,5,10,15). Some of the values I am plotting are greater than 15%. But it is still plotting these on the 15% line.
Can anyone please tell me how to plot these values as off the chart?
    Thanks

    Hi
Thank for your reply, but that is not what I want to do. I know that I can just increase the axis.
The maximum on my axis MUST stay at 15. The points above 15 must then be plotted as "out of range" points.
Every single charting tool I have used before, including access, has the ability to do this.
Crystal must have this simple ability somewhere!
    Anyone??

  • Score goes off the chart

I have a song I imported from Garage Band. Basically I just want to print out one part for someone to read. When I go to score, the notated music goes "off the chart" way to the right. I have to scroll over to the right. The page setup and print view do the same thing. I want to see the score printed onto one page for a nice printable page view. What needs to be set up? I don't get what is causing this problem. Even setting the little green lines in score don't help. The notes still go past the green lines and onto the right forever. I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Michael Miller

I have a vague recollection of seeing this problem in the past. Try going to File -> Page Setup and make sure the page size and scale settings are something reasonable.

  • Changing speed off the Title roll

Can anybody explain me how to change the "rolling speed" off the Title roll in Imovie 9 ?
I introduced a lot off names in the roll, but it is rolling too fast over the screen.

You should see a bar over the video clips that represents the title. Drag the right handle of this bar to the right to make the title longer and slower.

  • Fans/Heat go off the charts when playing Apple's Chess program

Received my MacBook Core 2 Duo with 2GB ram on Nov. 20th.
When my wife plays the chess game included with the laptop, both shoot up to 50% and fluctuate to 100%, spending a lot of time near 70 - 90%.
Subsequently, the fans kick in like mad - very loud and the heat emanating from the MacBook is uncomfortable.
Using smcFanControl, the temp remains at 80-81 degress Centigrade and the fan runs at 6196 rpm throughout the duration of the game.
This does not seem normal/acceptable? Especially for the stock chess game?

I'm sitting here quite incredulous at the service and response I just experienced with Applecare.
After explaining my problem with the 80-83C/6200 rpm fan MacBook, the rep asked where we were using the Macbook.
I explained that my wife uses it primarily on her lap while riding the train or bus, and on her lap while on the couch or in bed.
Without addressing the cause of the hot Macbook, the rep directed me to stop using the macbook on the lap. Instead, the recommendation was to use it on a desk or any other flat surface.
When I pressed her on the high temp/fan speed, she put me on hold for 10 minutes to only later return and tell me to send it in for inspection - min. 7 day turnaround.
When I asked her for a case #, she put me on hold for another 15 minutes.
This is a Macbook that I received from Apple on the 20th of November.
Is this what I can expect from Applecare?

  • MacBook fan going off the rails

I've seen some threads on here about MacBook fans failing to spin fast enough, and oddly I have the exact opposite problem. My fan is very normal during typical computer usage, but acts up very loudly and spins quite fast at two times: when I watch videos online, and when I play Diablo 2.
Now I'm guessing the videos make sense, but I play a lot of games on this computer that are more graphically intensive and otherwise demanding than Diablo and the fans aren't half as busy. When I start the game up, a dialog box opens for settings and such before it goes fullscreen and all that stuff starts. Today I left it at this simple little dialog box and watched my fan speed: It jumped from around 1800 to around 6200 rpm in about the span of 45 seconds. I had no other applications open nor was I so much as moving the cursor on the computer. The temp went from 120ºish to 160º F.
It worries me that the fans are working this hard for what seems like no reason. What's more, I usually play the game when I'm plugged in, but a couple of times I've tried on battery power and as soon as the fans get in full swing, the computer just shuts off. This has happened while watching videos online too.
Naturally I'm worried. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Loud fan behavior while watching online videos is normal due to the stress placed on the processor by Adobe Flash.
Regarding Diablo, you are right that it is not a graphically intensive game. However due to the age of the game, I believe it runs in Rosetta, a software translation layer that allows you to run the game on Intel processors. So there is a lot of background software translation going on, and the GPU is used very little or none at all.

  • About the rules (logic) between the fan speed and the temperatures?

    Hello All,
Well, I've had a bad experience with my MBP last week: my motherboard busted and had to replace it... Expensive part to replace!
After thinking about the reasons why it failed, my attention has been directed toward a possible motherboard overheating, which might have damaged the motherboard.
I've installed the iStat Pro widget and regularly monitor temperatures displayed vs. fan speed. I do get a bit nervous when I see a 84 oC CPU temperature and idle (2000 rpm) fan speeds. My GPU temperature is also sometimes in that range.
    My questions are:
    1) does anybody know the rules (logic) between the various temperatures (CPU, CPU heatsink, GPU, GPU heatsink, enclosure, HD, etc.) and the fan speeds?
    2) other than with the fews apps out there, is there a way to customize the rules? Is there a text file or a plist file somewhere where I can change the rules?
    Thanks!

If your idle speeds are 2000 rpm, you have one of the original Core Duo MBPs. For me, I see fans on my 17" CD MBP speeding up once temps get into the upper 70s °C.
Apps like smcFanControl allow you to alter the setpoints. Note that some users who installed smcFanControl, then uninstalled it, report symptoms like yours - namely, the fans remain at idle no matter how hight the temps get, until a thermal shutdown is triggered (somewhere close to 100 °C).

  • My iPhone 5s has no visual voicemail or regular voicemail and data usage is off the charts....

Okay so problem number 1 with my new iPhone 5s is data usage has spiked tremendously. I don't know why this is as for the last 2 years I have had an iPhone 4 and barely ever used 1GB a month. Now with my 2GB allowance I reached 90% used midway through the month. I have turned off the LTE and now have turned off cellular data completely and am only using wifi. I don't understand why my data usage has been so high this month since I am using my phone the same way. Is it the LTE?
My second problem is my phone has no voicemail. It tells me visual voicemail is unavailable and to call my voicemail. Except when I call my voicemail it asks me for a password. I have had my phone number for over 5 years and never had a password and now I can't get into my voicemail. I tried resetting the Network settings, that did not work. I have left my self voicemails and no notification even shows up. I called *86 to create a voicemail and it asks for a password which I never made.
I am EXTREMELY angry with Verizon's service at this point. I can not use my data until next month, and now I can't even receive voicemail messages. If someone could please tell me what is going on I would be appreciative.

To answer your first question, the answer is yes, it is the LTE. Your iPhone 4 could only connect to 3G and so therefore unable to transfer data as quickly as 4G on the 5s. So then you end up using more data than you have before.
And your second question. I am not sure as to why it's asking for a password if it never was before. You can reset your voicemail password if you log into your MyVerizon account. Hope that helps

  • QT file size off the chart

i am exporting a basketball game that i have off a camera. the file is 13 gb already. i want it way smaller but still good quality to watch as a quicktime. when i export as 422 it bloats to 44 gb. if i use h264 it is small - under 1 gb, but very ugly. i have exported tons of video before and usually using 422 makes things smaller - not larger.
    DV, 720 × 480 (640 × 480), Millions
16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
this is the native file info? any help?

i am exporting a basketball game that i have off a camera. the file is 13 gb already.
The file size is directly proportional to the total audio + video data rate.
i want it way smaller but still good quality to watch as a quicktime.
A "quicktime" movie is any QT or third-party data compression format in an MOV file container that is play on a system having properly configured QT component support. There a dozens of possibilities which can be combined in hundreds of possible ways with settings offering thousands of possibilities. Can you be more specific regarding your goals?
if i use h264 it is small - under 1 gb, but very ugly.
H.264 is a very efficient codec with a wide range of useable video data rates. Depending on your requirements for display dimensions, minimum quality acceptability, and/or maximum acceptable file size, there should be a data rate the will server your needs. Basically, SD H.264 video can be exported in the range of 1 to 18 Mbps depending on what your will settle for in terms of quality and file size for a particular display size. Quality is proportional to the data rate which is inversely proportional to the file size. What you need to to is find a happy medium between these three requirements.
DV, 720 × 480 (640 × 480), Millions, 16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz... this is the native file info? any help?
This looks like a video editor capture of camcorder content in standard definition. It likely has a total video data rate on the order of 28.5 Mbps (about 13 GBs per hour of content). Since your previous H.264 export indicates a combined total data rate on the order of 2.2 Mbps, you might try manually exporting the file limiting the video data rate to something in the 3 to 4 Mbps range and an AAC stereo audio track of 160 Kbps @ 48.0 KHz. This should improve quality and provide a target file one quarter to one third the size of your original "source" file. Since you did not provide any information regarding the aspect ratio, I cannot provide specific dimensions settings here. (I.e. if source was PAR 16:9, then you might target a 853x480 display size or 640x480 if in a 4:3 for smaller file size or 720x480 PAR encode for 640x480 playback if you want to force the video data to encode at a higher data rate. (I.e., H.264 video is adaptive depending on the content and settings used.)
I think it is a file that was captured at a high def type setting - although it was not high def to begin with. thus the huge file.
The original file on the camcorder may have been HD, but the captured file is SD and the file size of 13 GB is quite normal for an hour of content using the DV-25 codec. (DV-50 and DV-100 files would be double and quadruple this size.) This is simply a low efficiency (i.e., low compression format) which provides higher editing quality at the expense of file size.

  • JRUN runs off the chart!

I'm sorry to open up old wounds; however there doesn't seem
to be a definitive solution to this one. We are running several
different sites running on CF MX 7.0.2.142559 on Win2k3 box
(patched). JRUN memory usage pegs on us several times a day,
forcing us to restart the Coldfusion service. We have automated
this process to reboot when JRUN has used up 900 mb of memory.
I got a good laugh today when an ADOBE support rep told me
that all CF support was fee based. Starting at $499 per incident. :
    - O I got a good chuckle out of this, considering that this JRUN
issue started after our Server was upgraded from CF 6.1 to 7.
You’d think that this “BUG” as I would call it,
considering the hundreds of posts out there about it, would make
Adobe consider looking into the issue and coming up with a
“hot fix” for it. Anyways, enough of my ranting…
I am trying to resolve this issue and not wanting to pay for the
support, I am posting it here as I was directed by the CF Support
    Rep…
Here are my Web Server specs.
Windows 2003 Web Edition (patched and updated)
    2.8 GHz Dual Xeon Processors
    2 GB RAM
    CF MX 7.0.2.142559
    Java Version 1.4.2_13
    Min JVM Heap Size 1024
    Max JVM Heap Size 1024
    JVM Arguments:
    -server -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:MaxPermSize=128m
    -Dcoldfusion.rootDir={application.home}/../
    -Dcoldfusion.libPath={application.home}/../lib -XX:+PrintGCDetails
    -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintHeapAtGC -Xdebug
    -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,address=28999,suspend=n
    Debug is off
Whitespace management is also turned off.
All data sources are querying an MSSQL 2000 database…
Most other settings are default to the install.
I’m not a CF expert and these are settings that were on
our production server before I joined the company. I don’t
have a clue as to where to start. I have read most of the post on
this forum about this issue, however as I pointed out, there is no
definitive solution to the problem. Any help is greatly
    appreciated.

There is one thing that will cause CF to start sucking up a
lot of memory - your code. Did anyone check it to make sure it was
    compatible with CF7?
    Also, these lines:
    -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintHeapAtGC
    -Xdebug
    -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,address=28999,suspend=n
turn on monitoring of your JVM. They can be expensive to have
on if you're not actively monitoring your server.
Your other JVM settings look fine, though I've never been a
    proponent of static JVM sizes.
Look at paying for support this way - would you rather pay
$499 for them to start helping you, or would you rather pour
countless hours into your problem at an untold cost?
Posting some logs from around the time of your crashes might
be helpful for us to get started on what is going on.
Also, what are your max thread set for?
What are your max cached queries set for?
Do you maintain connections to your DB server?
Do you limit the number of connections to your db server?
Do you have a time out set?
Have you updated the JDBC drivers?

  • What's the normal fan speed?

Hello, my fans have always been around 2000 rpm with both tiger and leopord, so I am wondering what is the normal range for fan speed when the computer is not running anything heavy.

So, I'm not crunching much at the moment; yet I have 133 F and 3906 rpm. However, that doesn't signify. It was flat on a wood table. Now, laptop; Room fan now on. That fan is the main thing. I read a great overview, will post link if I can find it, that air is like fluid dynamics: a MBP flat on a table in an air conditioned room (no fanned air movement) will run hotter than an MBP with space under, with a room fan, moving warmer air. Yah, no, really true.
Get freeware iStat Control 1.1 (1.2 soon): (http://www.islayer.com/), which will display fans' speed and temps in the menu bar, andmore, and make popcorn too, with the lavalamp thingee.
Then I use Fan Control, 1.2, freeware, and set it up a tiny bit just to be cool: " ... Do you think your MacBook (Pro) is running to hot? Give Fan Control a try then. Some MacBook (Pro) are just to hot for daylong use. Fan Control adjusts the minimum fan speed depending on the current CPU temperature. For safety, it leaves the original automatic fan speed control intact ..." Leopard Ready, yah.
    http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/index.html
Both are preference panes in System preferences, which is very elegant, imho. And yes I have Leopard still shrinkwrapped. I will take a stab at it soon. Goodbye, cruel world (nah).

  • [Solved] Asus L1366 mobo, cpu fan speed control

    Hi, everyone,
I finally have this new core i7 system, to replace my old AMD athlonx2.  I have one question about the CPU fan speed control.
I remember that in my old system, the cpu fan speed control works out of box, no configuration is needed.
But when I install arch 64 on this new i7 system, the cpu fan is running at its maximum speed constantly while the CPU temperature is modestly low. I know there is a wiki teaching how to do it.
However, I am just curious why it doens't work out of box any more? Does CPU fan control work for you guys out of box normally? especially the new Core i7 cpu users?
Please let me know, really appreciated it.
    Thanks a lot.
Update: the issue is solved, see my last post, the solution is blacklisting: asus_atk0110, instead use w83667hg.
    Cheers.

First off, it would be useful to know what the sensors-detect script actually reports.
Okay. How fan control works on Linux: First, navigate to /sys/class/hwmon
Each of these folders, i.e. hwmon0, stands for a sensors monitor / fan controller on your mainboard that may control one or several fans. Inside hwmonN, there should be a subfolder called device, which contains several interfaces if your BIOS allows software-side fan control. You can read them with cat and write to them with echo.
    Examples:
pwm1_enable shows if OS-level fan control is enabled (1) or disabled and in BIOS control (0). Changing fan speed won't work if this is disabled. (i.e. cat /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable reports 0 -> disabled; you could enable it with echo 1 > /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable).
pwm1 allows to change fan speed. The values range from 0 (fan off) to 255 (full speed, 12V).
fan1_input shows the current RPM if a fan is connected. You can only read from this interface. Its useful to check all of these in the each of the hwmon folders to find out if there is actually a fan connected to the fan controller (they often have more ports than mainboard manufacturers use).
There might be a fan1_div, this is somehow related to how the kernel reads the RPM, I don't know how it works.
temp1_input interfaces can appeare too, if some of the chips have temperature sensors located somewhere. I *think* lm_sensors places the core temperatures it reads from CPU (the coretemp-isa-000X thingies) in one of the hwmon-folders too.
There might be interfaces for different fans in the same hwmon folder, i.e. pwm2_enable, pwm2, fan2_input, etc., all interfaces with the same index belong to the same physical fan connector, and all in the same hwmonN are managed by the same IC on your mainboard.
Warning: These interfaces, if they work, control the fans directly without any kind of security measure. If you shut some essential fan down, it will stay off until you reboot your CPU shuts down.
(If you see something likein0_alarm, in0_input, in0_max, etc. it's a voltage monitoring chip.)
If one of those interfaces can do something, OS-level fan control does work, if none of those folders contain a working pwm interface, fan control seems to be unavailable.
Sometimes there is an option in the BIOS to enable it, and for some BIOSs software-side fan control only works if dynamic fan control is disabled in the BIOS and fan speed is set to a static value - or vice versa.
I don't know what you are using to control fan speed, there are many applications that use these interfaces, i.e. GNOME or KDE power managers, so I'm not sure what is happening:
    IF: Windows 7 enables OS-level fan control and sets it the RPM to those you observed and you have nothing that provides fan control in Arch and so fan control stays at BIOS-level, which might also read out a different sensor / the same sensor differently or it might be more conservative in setting fan speeds altogether;
OR: You have something that provides fan control installed in Arch and it reads out a the wrong value supplied by lm_sensors and thus sets a higher fan speed.
Anyway, possible solutions I can think of:
Find out if you have some kind of fan control software and what it does. For example, I use the fancontrol daemon, I can't help you if you use something else.
The wiki mentions how to assign a fan speed to a certain temperature sensors. You might assign it to a different one. For example, there are no sensor chips on the mainboard of my EEE (no temp1 etc.) so I assigned the fan speed to the temperature reported by the BIOS via ACPI (those are in /sys/class/thermal, also no "device" subfolder on EEEs):
    FCTEMPS=/sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/pwm1=/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
You could also change the MINTEMP/MAXTEMP values to one higher than those you actually want to compensate for the effect of lm_sensors reporting temperatures that are too high.
It is currently not possible for a mortal user to change the coretemps lm_sensors reads, see this post, last paragraph.
There is a configuration file, /etc/sensors3.conf, you can change sensor names and adjust offsets here, but only for the monitoring chips and their sensors that are on the mainboard.

  • Intel Imac fan speed? normal ?

Hi guys , im a new mac user and i was wondering i downloaded istat pro
and i noticed a low humming noise when running so i lookd at the fan speed and
    the
    cpu 1200
    harddrive 1600
    optical drive 800
im not sure if those are good temps but liek some times after using for a couple hours while just webbrowsing and listening to music i feel the heat coming from like the screen and i touch it and its pretty hot!
an i just use it for webbrowsing and music and downloading like the only third party software i own is utorrent and handbrake..
i posted my computer stats below
    are Overview:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac9,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM91.008D.B08
    SMC Version (system): 1.45f0
    ATI Radeon HD 4850:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
    Type: Display
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 512 MB

Those look like normal fan speeds for the latest Macs. But you can use software that allows you to create different speed sets for different circumstances.
I use smcFanControl. The first time you start the app it reads your Mac's default fan speeds and creates a default set. But you can create more sets with increased speeds. I live in Monterrey, Mexico with no air conditioning, just fans. It has been around 40°C everyday for weeks on end, and lately hotter. So I have a Hot set where all speeds are ramped up 200 rpms over the default speeds. And I have a Really Hot set where they are all ramped up 200 rpms more over Hot. If I see the temps edging up I usually choose the next set and increase the rpms and that usually brings the temps down to normal. If I see the temps drop down below normal I back off a set on the rpms.
I think Handbrake is probably a bit CPU intensive, so it probably sends your temps up above their normal range when you are just surfing the net.
BTW, rpms are not temps, those are fan speeds. Revolutions per minute.
