Fan speed on G5 dual 2.3 Ghz vs 2.5 Ghz

I am needing to replace my G5 dual 2.0 with another PCI-x computer. I was wondering if anyone had experience hearing each of these computers, and how the fan noise (excluding video card) was compared to each other.

The firewire cable is just for the firewire ports on the back of the LCD. Same with the USB cable, except that the USB cable is also used for the brightness setting.

  • NX7600GT Diamond Plus and fan speed with Dual Core Center

I just got a NX 7600GT Diamond Plus for my HTPC. I noted that Riva Tuner and other utilities are not able to control the fan speed of the video card. The only way one can control the fan speed is via Dual Core Center and 3D Core Cell. The problem is that the default setting for fan speed on Dual Core Center is too high and clearly audible. How can I get Dual Core Center to start with user defined presets during windows start-up/boot-up ?
What I want to do is to put the fan into 'SILENT' mode automatically during Dual Core Center start-up. Any ideas / suggestions ?

well no need to edit manually, MSI provided everythink in easy way from core center.
select advanced mode, create your custom profile pickup your desired settings,(setup maximum FAN RPM via buttons) and save it to custom profile.
suggest you to read help section from program.
So the custom profile is automatically loaded every time DualCoreCenter starts up ? Maybe there is something wrong with my install of DCC, I cannot get it to load custom profiles automatically upon startup. I can save the changes to say "User Profile 1" but the profile active on startup always is the "default" profile ...

When did the fan problem start?
After I replaced the mother board on the computer.
Why did I replace the mother board?
Because the experts at apple agreed with my diagnosis that the major crash problems & kernel panics must have some thing to do with a logic board gone bad. They would not work on it, because this Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz machine is now a legacy model.
What I have done to attempt to fix my fan speed problem? yes I checked the obvious things, here is a list:
    1) yes I checked to be sure that the new mother board was the same part number as the original one, and that all things that were unplugged from the old mother board - were actually plugged into the new mother board.
    2) all the fans work, I can see them spinning if I use a flashlight and look at them (cover on and off to get at some of them)
    3) check all RAM to make sure: a) it was installed properly b) that the RAM worked using TechTool Pro c) even started the machine with only the original RAM that came with it.
    4) I installed a Temperature monitor - to see if there was something reading as very hot inside that was causing the machine to continually run the fans at a high speed. No, no heat issues that I can see. Here are the reading from the sensors in degrees fahrenheit, 2009-10-11 16:11:01 -0500
    CPU A Die Temperature: 75.7℉
    CPU B Die Temperature: 81.5℉
    Drive Bay: 68.9℉
Main Logic Board Air Inlet: 64.8℉
    Main Logic Board Ambient: 73.6℉
    Main Logic Board Backside: 76.3℉

    6) followed the SMU reset instructions for
    Power Mac G5 (Late 2004)
To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) computer, simply do the following:
    • Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    • Remove the power cord from the computer.
    • Wait two minutes.
    • Plug in the power cord.
    • Turn on the computer.
    7) followed the SMU reset instructions:
    Resetting the Cuda/PMU
    How to reset the PMU:
    • If the computer is on, turn it off.
    • Disconnect ALL cables from the computer, including peripherals and power.
    • If possible, move the computer to a place where you are not standing on carpet.
    • Open the case and ground yourself by touching part of the metal frame inside the computer.
    • Find the Cuda or PMU button
    • Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
    • Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the cables you removed in step 2 and turn the computer on.
    • If the computer still does not respond after resetting the PMU, the computer may require service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    8) ran disk utilities, repaired permissions
    9) found a setting in the system preferences that a chat room person suggested had something to do with fan speed. In Energy Saver, under options, processor performance was set to highest, I set it to automatic - this did not change anything that I could tell - BTW I checked my other G5 (a single processor that works fine) that is the setting that that it is set to, and it is nice and quiet.
    10) restarted the machine, ..
    11) found a Fan Control System Update - but it did not install when I tryed to install it -
    12) booted from OSX install disk and ran that disk utility
    13) used OnyX to fix disk permissions, clear caches and temp items
Nope - still have the same high speed fan problem. ... PLEASE HELP!!
I have been reading in the MacInTouch reader reports - found this: some one said to use this - thermal re-calibration using the Apple Authorized Service Providers' disk - but that's not available, at least I can not find it - anyone? have an answer to finding this - or can do it for me? I am in Chicago.

The Genius at the downtown apple store said that because it's a "legacy machine" they would not work on it, .. so should I push them?
Well, I personally think that's ridiculous, I'd Push them, I'd call AppleCare & talk up the chain if need be... there the ones that have or should have that Disc... man o man... Personally I'll never visit an Apple Store again in my lifetime, maybe try an independent AASP if none of that helps!..

Man-o-man, pop my cork before I explode on that one, if I had anything to do with it I'd close that store.

  • G5 Dual 1.8 GHz fans gradually go to full speed and stay there

My G5 Dual 1.8 GHz boots normally and quietly, with no freezes or panics. However, within a minute or so, I hear the fans begin to gradually gain speed. This continues for a couple of minutes until the fans reach maximum speed, making my room sound like a wind tunnel. This occurs with no programs running, just sitting idle at the Finder desktop.
I've checked the CPU & system temperatures using the shareware utility "Temperature Monitor 2.5" and everything is running cool, barely above room ambient, so there is no thermal reason for the fans to "take-off" like this as the heat pipes are doing their jobs to cool the CPUs.
There is no restriction on air flow around the case, and the acrylic side panel is installed. Interestingly, removing the side panel seems to have no effect on fan speed, whether installed or not ... maybe it's just the liquid cooled G5s, but isn't removing the side panel suppose to force the fans to full speed?
I was wondering if this out of control fan speed is a known issue that can be resolved with either a firmware update or software patch? Does this indicate the need for a thermal recalibration?

I've since answered my own question on this ... The reseller had installed OSX 10.3.2 as the boot OS. The (Late 2004) DP 1.8 GHz G5 requires 10.3.5 minimum, and with that update, the problem went away. The G5 now runs quietly.
This was far simpler than I had expected. Thanks.

  • MSI Dual CoreCenter - fan speed warning

    Hi MSI community!
I have a MSI K9n Neo V2 and I have installed MSI Dual CoreCenter on my PC. Now the problem is that MSI DUal CoreCenter keeps warning me about low CPU fan speed (~900 rpm). I noticed that the limit is 1000 rpm. The thing is my CPU doesn't run hot, 30-40 °C (90-100 °F), so the warning is quite irritating.
Is there a way to turn off warning, or lower the warning fan speed limit (regedit?) so I still can use this program?
    Kind regards
    Mike

    you're welcome
I also agree with Hans, you don't really need it
Quote from: Hans on 08-October-09, 01:17:34
Are you overclocking the system? If not, don't use anything. You don't need a monitoring program. The bios does the work for you. (Meaning: the system will shut down when overheating. Meaning as well: the system will regulate fan speed).

  • MSI Dual Core Centre 2.0.1.0 (Fan Speed ALARM)

    Spec:
    MSI P965 Neo F v2.0
    Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo
    XFX-Nvidia 7800gt 256
    4 GB 800Mhz Ram
    Hi guys,
Anyone here know why the following would happen:
I use the MSI Dual Core Centre 2.0.1.0 for Windows XP... every so once in a while, the fan speed would drop to 0-RPM, and
a very irratating alarm would go off. This started to worry me, and I opened my side panel to look at the CPU Fan when the alarm goes off.
the Fan is turning at high velocity, but the alarm still goes off. Is there something wrong with this software ? or am I doing something wrong.
One minute it reports 2005-RPM, then it just shows 0-RPM, and the alarm goes off. My machine is about 2 months old.
Should I be making changes in the BIOS on the Mobo, to enable support for Dual Core Centre???
    Please help...very worried...
By the way "Speed Fan" reports no such alarms or CPU fan speed issues...
    What is going on ?

Not sure if this may work bc you reported fanspeed reaching zero.
On my system with 975XPUE, Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 always runs below 1K rpm.  So I have to use a user profile with Fan Min set about 833 rpm to avoid the annoying alarm.
If you don't find any solution to the reported fanspeed reaching zero, you might be able to at least disable the alarm by setting Fan Min in DCC to 0 rpm.  That or uninstall DCC as suggested by most forum users.

  • Dual Core Center Fan Speed Control

    Hi Everybody,
I have just bought a P35 Neo2 FR motherboard which is great but i have a question about the dual core center software.
I have installed the dual core center software and disabled 'CPU smart fan target' in the bios, but once i have set the CPU fan speed i can't save the settings as the button is greyed off.
    Can anybody help me please..

Use speedfan and dump dualcorecenter !
It's infamous, lotta people having troubels with the  program.
Search around on this forum and seee how many complaints there are about the  program.

  • 10.4.6. makes G5 dual 1.8 freeze up and Fan speeds up

Did the upgrade to 10.4.6 yesterday. This morning the G5 froze (no input from keyboard possible, mouse pointer frozen as well), and after a while the fans speed up as well. Hard reset was needed. The G5 shows this behaviour now erratically. It may take an hour to happen again, or just a couple of minutes......
Is there any way i can have a look at a crash-dump or log file to see what happens? Any other idea to resolve this is more than welcome!!!
    Thanks and kind regards,
    Anthonie

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The freeze an fan blow symptom has been widely reported on the G5 discussions board for quite some time now, well before 10.4.6 ever came out. Whatever causes it is still a mystery, though some solutions may be in those threads.

  • IMac (early 2009), 3.06 GHz, ATI 4850 - fan speed and temperature questions

Well, so I downloaded and installed Temperature Monitor and iMac Fan Control - mainly for observational purposes and not for toying around with the fan speeds and I've got some questions. Mind you, I haven't tampered at all with the fan speed settings, just installed Fan Control. Here are my readings (while browsing the internet with Safari and doing a chat via iChat):
    Fan Speeds:
CPU fan (desired) 1300 RPM / (current) 1530 RPM
HD fan (desired) 2100 RPM / (current) 2099 RPM
    DVD fan (desired) 1300 / 1298 RPM
    Temperatures:
    CPU Heatsink: 92°F
    Internal HD: 108°F
    Internal DVD: 95°F
    GPU Heatsink: 107°F
Are these, under the circumstances, normal readings?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Your welcome and no problem. I would say only the Apple engineers can tell you why the fans are set to those speeds however my best guess is the obvious they found those speeds the closest to keeping the temps at an optimum operating temperature. I found when I'm doing graphics intensive work my machine heats up but quickly cools down when I'm done.

  • Fan Speeds, and Mirror Raid with New Internal Hard Drive

    Regards,
I recently installed and formatted a new hard drive in my PowerMac dual 2.3 ghz computer and I have a few questions.
    1. Now that there are two hard drives do I need to do anything to ensure that the fan on my computer can keep them cool? I think the fans I have in the hard drive bay is enough, but I do not know if they will automatically set themselves to run properly. I can monitor the fan speeds and temp from iStat pro, but do not remember what level the temperature was before installing the new one.
    2. Given that my new drive is a SeaDisc hard drive and the older one is a Western Digital, will this cause any problems in creating a mirrored RAID. I believe that both are 7200rpm drives, and my second hard drive is a little larger (I will just have unused space after making the RAID). I am concerned with the fact that these two drives are from two different manufactures. Will this cause problems or drastically slow down the reading and writing of data? Has anyone else experienced problems in making a mirrored RAID from two hard drives that are not exact matches, and even come from different manufacturers?
    Any advice will help.
    Thanks
    earpshmael

    Hi earpshmael;
Generally when creating RAID arrays the more similar the drive the less problems you tend to have.
The real question is exactly why do you want or need RAID?
I think so many people seem to think that RAID will solve all of their problem. I hate to tell you the bad news but it will not.
Generally there are to varieties of RAID available using the software RAID built into OS X which are 0 and 1. RAID 0 or stripling is generally for moving large file rapidly for applications like HD video. It usually doesn't help the OS. RAID 1 or mirroring is for protection from drive failure. It is not a valid backup solution.

  • G5 Dual 2.0 Ghz (2003). Light blinks 3 times

Hi there: I have a big problem on my G5. It's impossbile to turn it on because the power light blinks for 3 times. I have the following configuration: G5 dual 2.0 Ghz (2003) and 2x256 + 2x512 MB of ram. I looked for posts in this forum, and I saw that this event occured to other people. Following some suggestions, I removed all USB and Firewire devices, removed all the ram, cleaned the RAM modules, installed only the 2x256 and tried a boot. Then I removed 2x256 and installed 2x512, but results are the same. I also reset the PMU/SMU through the button on G5 motherboard... but nothing. Manual says that a 3 time blinking light means RAM not supported, but considering that my G5 had been working for 3 years till yesterday and nothig was added or changed... it sounds very strange. Could it be possible that both ram (256 and 512) are broken?
I thank in advance everyone who can help me.

I will tell you this, if Apple doesn't cover this problem my 15 years of loyalty with over 15+ computers will come to a halt and I will switch to PC. They made it clear so far that they will not cover this. We ar talking about the early production run of this model. Do a Google and search for "G5 logic boards for sale. You will find the phrase "2nd generation or revised version, etc. etc". Why? because there was a major issue with initial runs of this computer and a faulty logic board/power issue that is being ignored. My computer, only 3 or 4 years old is dead. Nothing but 3 blinking lights, a pause, then 3 blinking lights. This points to ram but the ram is fine. Its the board that the ram snaps into thats causing the problem (confirmed by Apple). Why should I pay for a KNOWN QUALITY ISSUE with these machines? At least cover the part. Come on $1000 for a logic board after 3-4 years? How could this be "my problem" when the other dozen or so computers I've owned rarely had any hardware issues? If Apple takes down these posts then they choose to ignore the situation. I have enough experience with computers to know when one is a lemon. Yes, from day one this computer had issues from crashes, freezes, to high speed fan noises. The high speed fan noises continued (even after the initial firmware upgrade) because the computer is getting a signal to cool things down at inapropriate times (like sleep mode)....after a usual episode the computer usually freezes and has to be manually re-booted which can't be a good thing over the long haul. Anyhow, sorry for the whinning but I feel that the company i had faith in in the past is now letting me down. If this situation changes, I promise to post it, but it doesn't look good at this point. Good luck to you and the many others who have or will have a stong possiblity of future issues with this particular model.

  • PowerMac G5 Fan Speed on Overdrive - Always

I have a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 GHz (PPC) that has recently started to kick all the fans into overdrive upon boot. They continue to run at high speed for a long period of time (maybe 30 minutes) and then settle down. It did it once last week, and then once again this morning. The issue last week just cleared itself up (I was not present during the issue, so I have very little information on that incident). This morning, I ran the extended AHT, and it came back clean. The fans still were at high speed. Reset the PMU, fans were still at high speed. Unplugged machine for 30 minutes, fans still at high speed. Reset nvram, cleared up the problem.
The question is if this is symptomatic of a larger issue, or just something that wigged out in the nvram. I work support on a customer site, and we have approximately 25 PPC G5's; this is the first time I have seen this issue with any of them. Searching the forums have yeilded very little good information.
All covers were on correctly, the interior of the machine is dustless. I see no signs of anything out of the ordinary. It is running Mac OS 10.4.10 and has maintenance run each night.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Chris

Best bet is to take the machine to an AASP and have them run a thermal calibration for the processors.

  • K9n Platinum fan speed control

    Hi!
    I have the following configuration:
    -Motherboard: MSI K9N Platinum v1.1
    -Bios: AMI v1.3
-CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core)
-CPU cooler: Artic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro
    -Memory: Kingmax 2*1 GB
    -Video card: MSI NX7600 GT
    -Power Supply: Antec NeoHE430 430W
-Hard Drive: Samsung 250 GB SP2504C
-Operating system: Win XP Pro SP2
I would like to control the speed of the CPU fan automatically, according to the temperature.
    I tried
-the Dual CoreCenter utility from MSI, but it allows me only check the speed manually (If I did not miss anything)
-control from BIOS HW Monitor setting SmartFan but it does not work at all. ( Iam not sure but this can be because my cooler, it has 3 pin connector, and th MB user guide tells it works only if I use 4 pin connector. Can you confirm this?)
-Speedfan 4.31, it seemed working, but the system become instabile. I check the programmers site, and this MB did not supported.
Do you have any suggesions, experience about controlling the CPUfan?
    Thank you in advance!
    T.

    Thank you for the answers.
Unfortunately the smartfan feature is not working in my case.( set to 3-pin in BIOS) I asked the MSI Technical Support and they said:
As this motherboard includes 4 pins connector for cpu fan, the 4th pin is used to controlled cpu fan speed, if you use 3 pins fan, fan speed will not be changed automatically and smart fan will not function.
I feel a small contradiction here
Do you have other ideas other than smartfan and speedfan?
    T.

  • Tweak the balance between fan speed and CPU temperature / Dell M6400?

    Hi all,
I have a Dell Precision M6400 17" laptop. It runs really well on Arch, but is a bit noisy. It has always been noisy, btw, but I recently noticed that the CPU fan was blowing a lot of air even though the CPU temperature is lower than 70°C. I also have a macbook air, and its CPU runs at 70°C all the time, which seems to be normal. I would like my m6400 to behave similarly, and I'm sure someone here know how to change that

When I start the laptop, its CPU fan stays at its minimal speed only for 1 or 2 minutes, then increases its rotation speed to a second level. It reaches it maximal speed only under heavy load, when the CPU reaches >80-95°C. I would rather let the CPU run a bit hotter before the fan starts to blow: let's say the fan could enter its intermediary speed between 70°C and 85°C instead of 55-80°C, and blow at is its maximum speed beyond that.
I checked the Fan Speed Control wiki page, but lm-sensors is not able to show me the status of the fans. Any idea ?
    Aurel.
PS: the temperature of the GPU is not reported by sensors, and nvidia-settings reports around 60°C. Its dedicated fan is very quiet.

    Hi all,
I have a Dell Precision M6400 17" laptop. I would like my m6400 to behave similarly, and I'm sure someone here know how to change that
    Hi aurelieng,
I'm in the same situation from at least 1 month ( INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME X9100, 3.06GHz with 8GB ram, one solid state disk 128 GB, and one sata disk 500GB)
My dell M6400 has dual boot: ubuntu and windows7. The fan works a lot and continuosly in both environment and this is the reason because I have doubt that the origin of the problem is in hardware problem?

  • Unusual Fan-Speed (up to 6200rpm @ 92°CPU), MBP 2011/ OSX 10.10.2

    Dear Community,
    I've got a problem with my MacBook Pro (late 2011) [2.4 Ghz/ 16GB RAM (upgraded)/ 256 GB SSD (upgraded)/ 500GB HDD (internal, upgraded (instead of DualDrive, iFixit-slot)).
Since last week I am observing that the fan of my Macbook revs up pretty high and pretty quickly up to 92° CPU temperature @ 6200rpm of the fan according to iStats Pro. This can happen in idle as well as load of any kind. I already cleaned the fan. Never experienced it before. Pretty unusual behaviour.
Do you have any suggestions/ guesses/ tips/ help for me? Thank you very much in advance.
Here's a copy of an (Etre)Check that I just recently ran. Hopefully it helps:

Thank you very much for your answer, OGELTHORPE.
I actually did reset the SMC several times the last few days and also observed unusual behaviour by the use of the Activity Monitor – with no result.
The CPU temperature as well as the fan speed can be at a top level without many processes at all. Happened right before I posted my question just after the last start of the system. Of course it also happens when I run a whole bunch of applications, but even in that case it differs. Sometimes it goes up, sometimes it's totally normal. That's why I called it "unusual".
Any further ideas besides the SMC reset?
