Fan speed on Macbook Air 2,1

Hello,
I know from experience other users than just myself have or have had issues with heat on their Macbook Air.
My problem is that whatever I do, it gets hot quite quickly, and from 20 minutes of use on has the fan on maximum being 6500 RPM as I understand from iStat pro.
Is this a hard(ware) issue like the heat sink not ideally glued to the CPU or anything, or is it normal behaviour ?

Barry,
I think it depends on your normal workflow.  With my MBair things are normal with web browsing and other light duties but heats up very quickly with any Graphics or CPU intensive activities.  Watching any video heats up rapidly.  So, your situation is normal for some activities but not normal for others.
Regards,
Captfred

Is it normal to hear the fan sound of macbook air. not all the time

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Sometimes, when you are doing heavy tasks with your computer, temperature increases. Your Mac turns on fans automatically when temperature increases a lot, so it will keep your computer safe. It's normal and you shouldn't be worried if this doesn't happen all the time

  • NOrmal Temperature and Fan Speed of MacBook Pro 13

Hi,what`s the Normal Temperature and Fan speed of MBP 13 during idle and when browsing or something?...please help..

The notional idle speed for the fan is 2000 rpm. If you turn it on you'll get about that and a temp of about 36 degrees in a cool room if you don't do anything. Opening a browser over wireless and say streaming a TV programme from the BBC will push the fan up to over 3000 rpm and the temp up to 60 degrees or so. Fan will drop to about 2400 rpm and temp to 53 degrees with gentle browsing.
Or that's what I get with a 2.53GHz 4GB memory machine. I took the 250GB disk out as it was noisy and put in a 120GB one that came from a Mac Mini so that may use a bit less power. (And the 2GHz Mac Mini has a rock solid 1500 rpm fan and rarely gets hotter than about 65 degrees - this has similar components to the Macbook Pro and so shows what a slightly bigger air access can do I guess).
The fan is rather faster and more noticeable than I was expecting with the Macbook, but the most noise came from the Toshiba disk which has now been banished to an external enclosure.

  • Advice: How to speed up Macbook Air (2010)

Under Lion my 2010 (HDD) Macbook Air has been intolerably slow. It could take 10 minutes to start a program. When connecting to a projector, it could likewise take 10 minutes for it to resize windows during which it was unresponsive. I have been about to hurl it in the trashcan because this computer was just such an impediment to my work. But now I found the solution: don't run Safari. I had long suspected 2G ram combined with a slow HDD was the culprit. I tried to minimize the number of programs open, but let Safari run permanently. But it turns out Safari uses enormeous amounts of memory, and it has a tendency to just grow and grow its memory grab. Now, I quit Safari when I want to run other programs, and after this the computer is merely slow, not intollerably so. It is annoying to always have to quit Safari, but at least it makes the computer useful.
Any better suggestions than always quitting Safari?

The fact is that Mac OS X is good at of taking care of itself, if there are performance issues, there are a couple of things you can check:
Check your Login Items under System Preferences > Accounts to see what you have automatically launching. Also check /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Users/yourusername/Library/LaunchAgents/ for items launching at startup
Launch Activity Monitor and change "My Processes" at the top to "All Processes". Then see what may be consuming your OS X system resources.
Check the System Memory tab at the bottom of Activity Monitor to see if you have excessive "page outs", a sign that you may benefit from more RAM.
Check if you are running any poor Mac anti-virus programs as they may take large resources.
If you don't want to do these manually or the above checks still won't help, let the MacBook speed up tool http://www.speedupmacbook.com/ perform a health check of your Mac and fix relevant issues.
    Best regards!

  • Typical WiFi speeds for Macbook Airs

    Hello,
I'll admit right away that I have a bit of an obsession with WiFi speeds, it's never fast enough for me, so I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to squeeze the best speed I can out of my mid-2012 Air. I'm hoping to find like-minded people here that are as obsessive as I am.
Right out of the bat, I know the Air has a 2x2 antenna, so there are limits to how much you will get out of a 802.11n network. I find due to where I live, only 5Ghz is a realistic option. It also allows for 40hz channels, so it does help. I use iperf for most of my testing.
As far as I can tell, theoretical speed for the Macbook Air Mid-2012 is 300mbps. I'm easily getting close to but never above 200mbps on an ASUS RT-N66U when in the same room. As far as I can tell, this is actually on the high side from various posts on the Internet. As soon as I go upstairs to my bedroom that sits right above the router, speed drops to at best 40mbps. This is consistent on both a Retina iPad Mini and my Macbook Air. Just goes to show what an impact a wall can have on the 5Ghz band.
So what I'm looking for are typical experiences from other users as well as from people who have made the jump to 802.11ac.

Also, not sure if it's just me, but the image in the orignal post is no longer showing up, so I'm posting it again here

  • Is this normal fans speeds for MacBook Pros? See videos of my MBP in action

I can't figure out the fans on my MacBook Pro. The lowest normal speed for the fans in 2,000 rpm. They will spin up at times for no apparent reason to 5,0000 or 6,200 with nothing taxing the CPU while it's also pretty cool, usually around the high 30's or low 40's celsius.
The other night I was converting a movie with Visual Hub, with the process taking 80% of the CPU and the temp reaching 75 c with the fans staying at 2,000 RPM until about half way through the eight minute conversion. This is a time I would have expected the fans to kick in much earlier than they did.
I have reset the SMC previously with no effect. Coming from a Polycarbonate MacBook this machine is much nosier, but also much cooler running.
Check out the videos I made showing iStat and Activity Monitor during these episodes. Thanks for any feedback. I'm coming to the end of my 14-day return period and wanted to verify if my MBP is operating like others.
    VIDEOS HERE.
    Thanks for any feedback.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggests.
S.U. -- I ran the Apple Hardware Test when I received the computer and it found no problems.
Travis -- Thanks for the insight to what normal range is for the MBP.
I opened a case with Apple to get the ball rolling and get assigned a case number. The tech on the phone could not look at the videos but didn't think there was a problem from my descriptions. He did suggest I take it in for a look.
Online I made a reservation for the Genius at the Apple Store that night. While I was waiting I was curious how other MBP's handled some serious thrashing. Since it was late and nobody was in the store, I loaded iStat Pro on three of the MBP's and opened Terminal. In two windows I ran yes > /dev/null and let them run.
On all three machines the fan speeds never got higher than the lower 4K rpm range. They all settled in around 90C and stayed there. One MBP ran these processes for about 40 minutes and the highest fan speed I remember seeing was 35XX RPM, and again around 90C, but it would fluctuate up or down a few degrees.
When my appointment came up I showed Rex, my Genius rep (Cleveland, Legacy Village store), what I had done on their machines just to get some perspective on how other MBP's handled both cores running more than 90%.
My MacBook had been asleep for a few hours. When he woke it up the fans went immediately to 4200 rpm and stayed there. He hooked up a super-duper, special, double-secret HD via firewire and booted off that. The problem persisted.
He took it in back to crack it open. He was looking for any loose connections but found none. He could not find any errors but agreed that something was amiss with my MBP.
He was not sure if my computer, being a refurb, was different when it came to returns. We called Apple on my cell, got a rep, and he arranged for them to take back my Mac since I'm within my 14 days.
So props to Rex for his great customer service and a happy ending.

  • Is there a fan inside a MacBook Air

I noticed my MacBook AIr getting a bit too warm at times, and wonder whether there is a fan
inside to cool it, that may need servicing.

Yes, but, it depends on the model and year:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Air_13%22
Look through these guides. The older it is the more likely that the fan system needs cleaning or servicing.

  • 5500 rpm fan speed on MacBook Pro 17"

I've got a MacBook Pro, Core Duo 2.16 GHz at work. It has been working just fine, but for the last six months, the fan speed has gone ballistic! When I wake it from sleep, fan speed is about 1000 rpm, but within ten seconds, the speed builds up to 5500 rpm. CPU use is at 2%, the temperature of the CPU is around 40 degrees.
I've installed smcFanControl, but no matter what I set the fan speed to, it never goes lower than 5500 rpm. If I set it to 6000, it goes up to 6000... I've also reset the PRAM, but with no result
    Any hints on this?

  • Should the fan in my MacBook Air be running when the computer is shut and asleep?

Mine is, and this seems like a waste of battery life. I feel like the fan used to shut off when the computer was shut. But now, even when I close the MacBook, the fan still runs as fast as it did when the computer was open. Anyone know what the heck is going on here?

Yeah I think it is a Mavericks thing. Mine actually wasn't too bad. I closed the lid at night when my power was at about 52% and the fan kept going. I just went to bed, and in the morning, the fan had stopped, and my power was still around 51%, so it didn't eat any of my power like I thought it was going to. Mavericks must have the ability to cool your computer when needed even after you close it. It actually turned out to be not that big a deal.

  • Why is the fan of my Macbook Air suddenly so noisy?

It has become very noisy. The fan is running constantly. I never heard the fan before. Has something broken. The performance has not changed but it takes much more to start up and shut down.

    Hi aschicchi,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Here are a few troubleshooting steps to address your fan issue:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • Optimum Temperature and Fan speed

What's the normal range of temp and fan speed for MacBook Air? At what temp should i worry about it?

Mine (13" i5) reaches 95C whilst watching hulu and browsing the web. Seems a tad high to me for what I am doing.
Hopefully you will get some more good answers.

  • Why is my macbook air making such a loud noise?

I have a Macbook Air 13". I have just switched it on and the fans are making are considerably louder than usual. The laptop isn't hot at all, in fact from what I can feel it's blowing out quite cool air. Any ideas on why it is doing this and how to stop it?

    Hello there, Carly.
It sounds like the fans on your MacBook Air are running at full speed after you've turned on your computer. The following Knowledge Base article offers a great recommendation for troubleshooting this issue:
iMac: Fans run at full speed after computer turns on - Apple Support
If you press the iMac power button while you are connecting the power cord, the iMac will enter a mode in which the fans run at full speed. In order to correct the issue, reset the SMC. Your iMac should now start up and operate as expected.
To avoid this issue, be sure to start the computer by pressing the power button after you fully connect the power cord.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.
