Fan Surge on Startup -- Normal?

When I start my Mac Pro, after about 3-5 seconds the fans suddenly go full tilt for about a second, and then quickly throttle down to normal speeds.
Is this a common phenomenon?
Clark

Mine does it too but I think that its my X1900XT card not the system fans. It's a little too high pitched for it to be the system fans, IMHO. Is everyone else who's noticing this running the X1900XT?<</div>
Have the X1900 it's under the desk and never have heard the fans except for when booting. I haven't updated the fan bios for fear of breaking a good thing. the only way I know it's on is the soothing heat on my legs when running FCP and STP also have non fined apple approved mem from www.datamem.com with no problems.

  • Fan Surging on G71- Laptop

OK, this is weird. My fan surges from high to low. Sometimes it stops for a second and then starts again. Sometimes it will stop for several minutes to an hour and everything will operate normally. Then it will start surging for another hour. Sometimes during the surges performance gets really choppy, eg. moving the mouse pointer will make it jump around.
The inside of the cmoputer is clean.
In BIO setup "Fan Always on" is not checked.
I have not upgraded the BIOS.
I dn't think it's software (operating system) related. When it started doing this about three weeks ago, I was running Linux Mint 14. I then switched to Ubuntu 12.04. Then I reloaded Windows 7. Then I went back to Mint, only version 15.
CLUE: When I was running Windows 7, it never woke up from it's first hiberation. Instead, it gave a message and a blue screen of death saying it shut down dur to processor temperatures. It never ran correctly again under Windows. After loading Linux Mint 15, no issues except for the fan surging.

    Oh no!
And it's brand new right?  So a dusty/clogged fan wouldn't apply here.  It's odd that you would have that issue on a Mini as they use a tiny little atom processor, not a super hot i7 or anything like that (Envy Users have a lot of heat issues).  Does the laptop feel hot at all?  If not it could be a faulty fan, if you just bought it I'm sure you can have that looked at/replaced under warranty.

  • Fan error at startup in ibm thinkpad t42

i always get fan error at startup in my  ibm thinkpad t42 since 1 week. i press esc key at error and that is the only way my system startup. its not in warranty and will like to try to fix it on my own. please help. i am worried

Try bblowing some air into the fan lover when the system is off. Then turn the system on and put your hand at the louver to see if it blows air. If this doesnt work, run PC doctor for DOS ( available at  http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-56222) and check the problem. If this doesnt work either, replace the fan.

  • HP P6203W CPU fan error on startup windows 7 32bit system

    Hi there guys !
I got this HP computer for about a year now and since changing my broken CPU fan i got a CPU fan error on startup.
    I have got a HP P6203W
    MOBO: Pegatron Narra5
    Bios: phoenix technologies 5.55 12/08/2009
I wanted to reduce some noise from my computer by replacing the CPU fan,
so i changed the original fan for a Noiseblocker-Multiframe M8-S1.
Now when i start up the computer; the fan slowly turns around , and i then got an CPU fan error before windows fired up. I can get past it by pressing F2 but its annoying to do so every time i start up. Plus I don't think the fan is turning fast enough.
I already tried checking cpu fan settings in the bios, but i have the blocked bios.
    No fan settings here.
Do one of you guys have any clue about how to get my CPU fan working properly again or maybe a bios update for my motherboard ?
Any help would be very much appreciated !
    thanks for your time

    Hello willibrord87,
There isn't a BIOS update available for your motherboard so that is not going to be an option.
On some BIOS you have the ability to disable the system from checking the CPU Fan to avoid the error. If it's there it would be under Advanced menu and then a sub menu called Hardware Monitor. HP like many manufacturers lock out settings to avoid users changing settings to much in the BIOS so the system may not have the option. Since you said you already checked the settings I'm assuming we can skip this.
So it brings us to the motherboard. The CPU fan plug on the motherboard is a 12v connector, the Noiseblocker you have starts a slow ramp up based on this link http://goo.gl/6jsgn it says it's a start voltage of only 5v. I'm thinking that since the CPU fan is not starting up quick enough the motherboard is failing out and giving the CPU fan error. In the end the error is not a real error because once the CPU fan actually works then it's good to go.
You may want to try a different CPU fan that has a quicker spin up, or at least move that CPU fan to another system to see if it exhibits the same slow spin up.

hello I have imac (27-inch mid 2011) 3.1ghz intel core i5 1tb serial ata hard drive, amd radeon hd 6970m
    my problem is
imac works fine in safe mode,
but when you try to startup normal it's connstantly restart by it self.

in safe mode works perfectly, soon as I try to boot in normal mode it's keep restarting.on screen I don't  see any line vertical or horizontal picture look normal on safe mode.but unable to start normal it just restarting over and over.I try another HDD but same things happen,I replace memory but still same.works ok in safe mode but not in normal mode.I will try to post system error report.

  • I7 iMac - Random CPU fan surges

It's happened three times this month, 2 of them today - my CPU fans will suddenly rev up to 4,000 RPM, and iStatPro will show the CPU temperature as "--". The first time it happened, I was worried that the machine got too hot. The second time, I had just sat down at the computer in the morning... the top of it was hardly even warm.
Both times, after shutting down and rebooting the fans went back to normal, but the computer performed poorly in graphical tasks (gaming) until I did an SMC reset, which brought it back to normal.
Two of the times it happened, I was playing Modern Warfare. The third time, I was watching a Friends DVD. All 3 times, system was 90-99% idle and all other temperatures were moderate. The fact that on one occasion it happened when my computer was still cold from being asleep all night makes me think that it's a false sensor reading that makes the computer think it needs to crank that CPU fan.
I haven't done the recent SMC update, since I never plan on using this computer as a display for another machine... should I install it anyway?
    Thanks.
    -Nick

4000 rpm is a lot thats not normal, are you doing some heavy processing like rendering video or encoding video, its the only way your cpu start to ask for the sensor to fire up the fan so it could cool down the system. That is normal if your rendering video.
In my case its weird also I am using Ableton live suite 8 to produce music and when I am looping some sound to compose it with some others to match up in sync it uses the cpu but only 10 percent maybe. Here is the thing my computer start to rev up once in a while, when I a doing this, I do notice that maybe its spring and the room temp is higher and there is a chance that the computer would start to heat up. I mean I got this computer in Feb 2 and of coarse it wasn't having this problem but as we head towards summer it is heating up once in a while and the computer fans do fire up.
I am guessing the i7 do have a tic to get hot and once in a while the fans fire up, but its not normal that it does it frequently just idle, it should fire up when the processor is being loaded with processing power, for music production synthesizer running midi notes, video rendering which is a big load for the CPU, etc.

  • Macbook Air cooling fan surges hugely for minutes at a time.

For the past 3 months now, my MacBook Air, OSX 10.9.3, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, simply surges to a fever pitch for about 1 minute and then dies back away.
The system could even be in a quiet state running no unusual software, not challenging simulations, nothing.
I have IT staff looking at me saying stuff like...
    - "Is your system going to explode?"
    or
note realizing that is has a flash ram drive, "your hard drive is done for."
The fan works normally at a low pace from time to time in its normal work.  But, simply takes off occassionally, what gives?

    If gaming or watching videos
    NORMAL
If it rapidly surges while doing the same thing for a long time, RESET THE SMC
    RESET SMC
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
if same, then you have a damaged/ defective heat sensor tripping fan.

  • Dv7t-6100 Fan surging / vibration Should I Replace? Fan Only? or + Heatsink?

Since yesterday, dv7-6100 fan is surging and / or also vibrating somewhat loudly (like bearing noise or out of balance noise).  I blew out dust as much as I could with can of air.  It did not change significantly.  The surging sound is like when a printer head prints, then zips to another location and prints again, an intermittant "zzzt.....zzzt....zzzt"  where the zzzt represents the higher spin noise or vibration.  maybe 1/2 second interval.
I have since downgraded the power plan and fan is much quieter, because it's running slower, but still has a slight vibration noise.  No surging.  There was definitely strong and varying vibration noise before I downgraded power plan.
For the past year,  on startup, computer will on occasion have black screen and message  something to the effect of "fan not working, will shut down in 10 (15?) seconds..."
I always let it shut down, then start it again and it always starts the second time. I've never noticed the fan not working other than when it just starts with that message, which seems to be once a month or so, to maybe a couple of times a  week, not every time.
The surging makes me wonder if I should try to download the driver?  Or is the vibration proof enough that the fan needs service (either dust removal, or fan replace).
Is it likely that only dust removal is necessary or should I just order a fan?
Some fans come with heat sink, some without.  Which should I order?  I don't mind turning a few screws to remove the heat sink before swapping out if replacement of heat sink is not necessary.  I just don't understand why some come with heat sink and some without.

    Hello @nextari,
I have read your post on how the fan on your notebook computer is making an unusual noise, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To decrease the noise being made from the cooling fan, I recommend following this document on Reducing Fan Noise. This should help identify the root of the noise, and help prevent surging / vibrations in the future.

  • My PC won't startup normally or in safe mode . I have a white screen with a flashing folder icon which has a ? on it. How do I get it to start?

My PC will not start normally or in safe mode. I have tried several times in safe mode. All I have now is a white screen with a folder icon containing a ? questiomark. This icon is flashing. No cursor available.

The blinking question mark means the startup drive can't be found.
It could be that it has failed or needs major repair. Boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and run Disk Utility.

  • Running games in Windows XP(BOOTCAMP), my fan kick in? NORMAL?

I bought the white Macbook 2Ghz, not upgraded still with 512 memory. I installed windows xp with bootcamp and installed these games halo, cossacks on it. Whenever running this games, the macbook fans start running? It this normal?

Whenever your graphics circuit is working hard--like playing a QuickTime video or game, for example--the fans are going to speed up. I have a java poker application that causes my fans to run high when the table is full of players and a lot of graphic interaction is going on.

  • Is progress bar on startup normal?

During startup after a complete shutdown, a progress bar appears while files are loading.  Is this normal for Lion?  Did not see it in Leopard.  Curious because two things happen during startup: automatic login does not work (minor issue) and monitor resolution defaults to highest resolution rather than resolution set in Preferences.

It's a bug of Lion. The same is happening to me. After turning off the computer, the gray bar appears and the login screen. Then i don´t have wifi or bootcamp partition. I have to reboot. I hope Apple fix it soon.

  • Huge CPU temperature, low fan rpm, is it normal?

    Hello!
    I'm a new mac user, I have a new macbook 2.0Ghz, 4GB Ram and a hdd 160Gb.
I compared the temperatures of my mac with other macs and my values are huge.
In normal CPU usage I get 60ºC, but when I turn on my virtual machine the CPU temp can go to 84ºC and the fan is only at 3265rpm!
For example, now I got CPU usage of 70% and it's at 80ºC and the fan is at 2456rpm, is it normal?
Above there is a list of CPU temp and respectively fan rpm
    84ºC - 3265rpm
    80ºC - 2427rpm
    78ºC - 2004rpm
    60ºC - 2000rpm
    45ºC - 1998rpm
    40ºC - 2001rpm

    Hello All, I have a early 2008 Macbook 4.1, with a 2.1 Ghz, 4G ram, and a 7200 RPM HD, and I am also frequently between 60-85 deg C. (140 - 185 deg F.)
My fans runs between 1800 rpm up to 6200 at higher CPU temps.
Sometimes I wonder if running the Macbooks wifi, bluetooth, and an external 24" monitor, increases the interior temp?
I have had on occasion, doing some encoding with a slew of programs running, had the temp up to 96 deg C (205 deg F), and it still was running fine, mind you I was freaking out.
But when I checked on the Intel site for max CPU temp for my model processor T8300, it said that it was 105 deg C as the maximum. 105 deg C converts to which is 221 deg F.
I figure that they must have some kind of CPU shutdown/slowdown mechanism so if it gets too hot.
And if it doesn't, my 3 year AppleCare will have to deal with it.
I am more interested in the Hard Drive temp, since if that cooks, there goes my "restore plan" into action. But it generally stays around 90 - 100 deg F.
My buddy has an iMac, and it runs between 70-100 deg F. Go figure, it's cold as ice
Just thought I would share my 2 cents worth, IAN...

  • MSI GT683 Black Screen and full fan speed at startup

    Hello!
SO this morning i woke up and was about to start my lovely laptop.
I pressed the on button and the screen remained black and the fan sped up slowly and slowly, after 10 sec it was at full throttle!
Yesterday i got tired and put my laptop to "sleep mode" because I meant to use it later, but I fell asleep can something have happened by that?
I have had this laptop for 3 months, never had a single problem. But now this :(
And a really need my laptop for school now!
When i bought it one 2GB ram module was changed to a 4BG so the total would be 8GB, and a 60GB SSD was installed on the second HDD slot.(Boots on 22 sec )
I have played a few hours of COD MW3 but i have a coolermaster laptop cooling pad with 2 fans, so the laptop did not get so hot when i played.
    So please anyone help?
(I´ve tried booting with only one ram installed and tried my ssd in my other laptop, both are fine.)

I know this is an old topic but I just had the same issue and wanted to post my results in case anyone else was having this issue and stumbles on this thread. I was playing a game on my laptop, temperatures were well within the normal range, and suddenly the computer made a sort of "zap" noise and the screen went black. The computer also fell deathly silent but the power light (the shield) was still on. No indicator lights on the mouse pad and the orange lights around the screen had gone out. I had no choice but to do a hard shutdown. When I turned it back on, the screen remained black, the power light remained lit, but no other lights on the computer. The fan was on ultra speed in a way that I have never heard my fan run. I smelled the exhaust to see if I smelled burning but there wasn't any sign of that. Anyway, I let the computer rest, tried again the next day with the same result. I contacted my warranty company, started a claim, and waited for them to send me the box so I could ship my laptop to them. In the meantime, determined as I am  , I tried the laptop several more times in the next few days just to see if I would have any luck. Sometimes the fan would come on and sometimes the laptop would be ghostly quiet but otherwise everything else was the same. Same blackness, same nothingness. I immediately assumed this was a major malfunction, most likely the motherboard. When the warranty company took the information for the claim, they agreed that it sounded like the motherboard or possibly the hard drive.
Three weeks later, my laptop is on its way back to me. I received word from the warranty company that the issue was the graphics card. This completely blew my mind as I wouldn't expect the graphics card to prevent the indicator lights from flashing, the  soft touch keys at the top of the keyboard, the lights on the sides of the screen, etc. They are the experts however, right? They said the video card malfunctioned. They replaced the video card and now the laptop is in working order. They are sending it back to me now and I should hopefully receive it in the next couple of days.
Sorry for the looooooong response but I wanted to give as much info as possible because I couldn't really find anything when I was searching for this same issue. Hope it helps someone!

  • When i switch users internet becomes unresponsive, also started to hear the fan when just using normally

    Hi
Had my macbook pro for nearly 9 months now and noticed a couple of odd things.
    1) When i switch from one user to another and i try to go onto the internet i get a page is unresponsive message.
    2) I've started to hear the fan when the computer is just doing normal activities like surfing the net etc
I have googled and cant find anything similer, any ideas?

4,000 RPM for idle load seems excessive, 2,000 is usually the norm.
There could be various reasons for this:
1: Dead sensor or fan, the other is compensating. - #3 Hardware Test needed.
    2: Need a SMC reset - #1 SMC Reset.
3: You installed something that has a background process and hogging CPU cycles.
Open Activity Monitor > All Processes and click on the CPU to sort the highest to the top and see if something unusual is hogging cycles.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
    Other possible reasons:
5: You have done something to place excessive and sudden demand on the processors at one time, thus the software is trying to anticipate that and pre-emypt your behavior and run the fans at a higher speeds in advance.
6: Your machine is in a excessively hot environment
7: Your machine is in a excessively dusty or animal environment and the exhaust ports are clogged with animal hair/lint., will require cleaning by Apple if still under AppleCare/warranty.
8: There is malware on your machine, or your third party software is no functioning correctly leaving processes running.
9: OS X needs to be reinstall on the machine. #8 Reinstall Just OS X
10: You have a corrupted cache file. #12 OnyX cache cleaning routine.
11: You have a 13" MBP and have been trying to 3D game on it, didn't wait for it to cool down.
