Fan turns on, but no boot

My late 2007 macbook was would not come out of sleep mode when the lid was opened this morning so I force shut it down. Now it will not turn on. The fan will turn on for a couple seconds but nothing else happens when the power button is pushed. I've tried various resets but nothing changed. I am in the south pacific and cannot call or contact support even though I have an apple care warranty. Any save out there?

Yes... It's been disconnected for about 5 months from the power. I needed to buy a new monitor for it. I have an iMac as well, that's why I had no rush to buy the monitor.
I hear three startup chimes right away when turning it on... I try to hold the power bottom on the back as I turn the mini on and I hear the same three chimes... followed by that white light in the front blinking a couple times and then it stands solid white... I can hear the hard drive spinning on but I can't insert a cd / dvd... it won't take it as if the computer were off.
I haven't tried to open it up and check if any piece is loose. I've read in previous posts that it may help.
What's weird for me is the fact it seems the mini is on but it won't boot!
Should I buy a FireWire cable and try to boot it from the iMac?
Thanks for any response!!!!!

  • Pavillion dv9580us turns on, but won't boot or POST

I have an HP dv9580us that I bought about 2 years ago. It had been working well until a few days ago. Now when I turn it on the lights come on, the fan turns, but nothing happens. A few seconds later everything turn off, then the lights come back on again, and it just stays like that. No beeps, no blinking lights (they turn on but don't blink), no sounds, the screen completely blank all the time.
So, I think the BIOS is not even making it to POST at all. I already tried re-seating the RAM, took the battery off, took the CD drive off, re-seated the HD, and reset the bios.
Any ideas on what may be the problem? I suspect the motherboard, but on most cases I read about the system does boot or POST.

According to the result of your tests, you arer pretty sure that there is a CPU or Motherboard failure.
Not easy to say which one fails. Maybe both!
If your computer is under warranty, don't hesitate!
You can extract the HDD and make a backup of it before you send the computer.
I would recommend using a USB adapter that can connect your internal hdd (now external!) to the USB of to another computer.
Modern USB adapters for HDD can do SATA and (P)ATA. They are even shipped with an external power supply so that you can power on your hdd.
If your computer is not covered by any warranty, well, that's harder. You could try to extract the CPU and replace it to see if anything goes better.
Or you could just purchase a new computer and transfer your current data to your newer computer.
There are even some tools that allow you to transfer the data AND the system+applications directly to your new computer so that when you power it on for the first time with the transferred configuration, it can boot enough of Windows to detect the new hardware.
I used to use Qualystem ubiboot to do so but now that Qualystem has been acquired it seems that this tool is not available anymore (or with a larger/more expensive package). There was a company from New Zealand that had a similar tool...
    Good luck

  • Powermac G5 light go's on will not boot up,fan turns on

My powermac G5 DUAL 2.3GHZ PROCESSOR will not boot up light turns on then fan turns on. I replaced the battery cr2032 and it still does not work. Please help solve my problem. Thank you again in advance. The apple support communities is the best.

Do you get a boot tone (chime) when you power up?
If it does, try a safe boot by powering with the shift key held down.
If it doesn't, you have a fundamental problem to deal with.  Are any LEDs on the logic board illuminated after you power up?
If so, this might help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2652

  • IBook won't turn on, but fan is running

Okay, I have an iBook w/a recalled battery, which I have already requested. I am waiting for that to come in. Upon the suggestion of the apple website, I have removed my bad battery and am running my laptop solely from the a/c adapter. However, now my comp. won't turn on. The fan is running, but nothing else is happening. Also, I have followed the advice of apple's tech support link, but that has not done any good. Per their advise, I put in the Software Install and Restore disc, and now I can't get it to eject. I need help asap, if anyone has any anwers. Thanks

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
From the Apple Knowledge Base article on troubleshooting slot load drives:
    The drive doesn't eject discs
If the drive ejects discs slowly or appears to be struggling, insert and eject a disc several times.
If the drive does not eject discs, press the F12 key. Holding down the trackpad button during startup should also eject a disc.
Reset the parameter RAM (PRAM) and/or the Power Manager (PMU). PMU reset instructions for iBook G4/PowerBook G4.
If the disc still does not eject, contact Apple to arrange for service.
    I hope something there helps.

  • Satellite A300 - Turns on but doesn't boot

    Hello,
I have a Satellite A300. I have had several probems while booting since 2 months ago: When I want to turn on my laptop, it turns on but the screen keeps black and it doesn't load the "Toshiba Leading Innovation" screen. The "Satellite" light (at the left of the mousepad) is on (it would only switch on a second while booting and then would switch off) and it doesn't turn off.
I have to retry for so many times with all the possibilities: Without battery, only with AC adapter, with both of them but it doesn't boot. I don't know what can I do. I have always to hibernate my laptop bacause I am afraid to can not boot it the day after.
Could you help me? If it cares: I had to buy a new battery (not Toshiba original) because I had to change the original one. No more changes in my laptop.
Thank you very much and sorry for my english writing :S
    Diego

Thank you for your reply PinkPanther,
I think it isn't fault of the battery, because my laptop doesn't load the Bios neither the "Toshiba Leading Innovation" screen not even tryng to switch on only with the original Toshiba AC adapter.
About the external monitor: it's true many times I connect my TV by the HDMI port. But i think it isn't the problem. As I said first, there's a light (is writen "Satellite") at the left of the mousepad that lights when the laptop turns on and when comes this "Toshiba Leading Innovation" screen, suddenly it switchs off. So when I have this problem with my laptop, this light keeps on. I think that if it was problem off the monitor, this light should turn off and load the OS, and then I must hear the sound at the begining of the OS...
As you say, maybe it's a serious probelm... I posted here because I hoped that anyone had the same problem, resolved it and could help me

  • G5 dual 2.7 powers on but no boot chime, video, keyboard activity

    Hello:
I have a Power Mac G5 dual 2.7 from late 2005 w/ 2 GB RAM and no hard drive. Clearly, I won't be able to boot without a system. I bought it without the hard drive, thinking I'd install my own but test with a universal Tiger disk first.
The problem I have is that after I turn the power on, the fans go and the manufacturing LEDs (the two red LEDs indicating that the plastic cover is off and that the optical inputs are present) go on, but nothing else. The keyboard shows no activity, and I can't open the DVD-RW with the open button. No video comes up. I've tried resetting the PMU. The fans start slow, but rev up after a cople of minutes. The logic board shows no diagnostic LED activity, and other than white when I press on or off the power button, no activity from the LED above the power button. I tried reseating the video card and using a new PRAM battery.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks!
    Thanks! MZ

I can't open the DVD-RW with the open button.
Either try holding the Mouse button down while powering on, or slide the door down and use a paper clip in the tiny hole there to force open it.
Did you replace plastic cover & close it up?

  • MacBook pro screen wont turn on mechine turns on but front sleep light is dim

So I was just browsing on chrome on my MacBook pro and suddenly the screen froze and from the top of the screen it started to get dim and came down right to the center of the screen and then another black shade ontop of that came down and stopped in the middle it did this until the top half was completely dark but the bottom half is ok and nothing happend oh by the way I was just on Facebook I wasn't on a website that was harmful to the Mac so any ways I then I held the power button until it turns off thinking it would work normaly but it didnt, when I turned it on I heard the fan turn really fast and then it slowed down and the front sleep light came on and it stayed like that, i could also hear the hard drive spinning inside I closed it and the sleep light is on  it but now it brighter and it's not even going dark and bright like its supposed to do when it's sleeping. Can someone please help?

    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If no joy try a pramreset: power off the MBP, power back up, before the start chime press and hold optio, command, P, R, and continue tohold them until your the chime 2 times then release. Reboot.
If still not happy try a safe boot, power up  holding the shift key, continue to hold the key until you the progress bar and gear then release. This will show if it could be a third party software problem, this will boot the MBP with only essential applications running. Be patient as this takes longer than normal. Try things out, if normal, shut down and restart and see if things are still messed up.

  • Fan Turns on when in sleep mode

Hi - we have a iMac G5 20" that we recently purchased used. Everything seems to be good, except occasionally when it is in sleep mode the fan turns on at high-speed for a few minutes.
Nothing else seems to be wrong, but it is worrying. Is this normal? Thanks in advance!
Finder says Finder v10.4.4 - assume that is OSX 10.4.4?

Those are also good suggestions for keeping things running smoothly.
I did see that OP was running 10.4.4, and updating to 10.4.6 might be a solution. I prefer to use the combo updates also as some users have reported problems that started when they applied the deltas through software update, but were fixed by re-applying the combo update over it. Therefore, since I have broadband I just skip the possibly problematic deltas.
Since we are now on the topic of OS updates, be sure to follow some basic procedures that will reduce the possibility of it causing more problems than it solves.
Make sure that you back up everything first. I clone to my FW drive with SuperDuper so I can boot from it if the update goes bad.
After the cloning process is complete, I unplug all USB and FW devices except the keyboard and mouse.
I download the combo, then run all the scripts available in Cocktail before applying the update. Then, after the restart I run the Cocktail scripts again.
I hve followed this process for all minor and major OS updates and have never had a problem with any of them. It is no guarantee that they will not go south, but I like to attempt to prevent problems rather than troubleshoot them later.
Sorry so long. Just wanted to share.

  • My mac mini wont turn on but there is power to it as the usb port charges my iPad

My mac mini wont turn on but there is power to it as the usb port charges my iPad. My monitor uses a HDMI cable when the mac mini is off it says no input received which it does not say so it is receiving some signal from the mac mini. I have tried a different cable and a different monitor/ hdmi cable. The fan isnt running there is no start up noise but the little light on the front blinks every 4-5 seconds. Im booked in to see a GENIUS on sunday but I was wondering if there is anything I can do in the mean time. The mac mini is only 8 months old if that. Any ideas people? Oh the mac is also running mountain lion and has been since the day of release i've never had a problem up until this.

The following table lists the new tones and their meaning:
    Tone(s)          Description
1 tone, a 5-second pause, repeat          No RAM installed
3 successive tones, a 5-second pause, 3 successive tones          RAM does not pass data integrity check
1 long tone when holding down the power button          Firmware upgrade in process. See About firmware updates for Intel-based Macs for more details.
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones          Firmware restoration from CD in process. See About the Firmware Restoration CD (Intel-based Macs) for more details.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

    Thanks

    @SohaibAfzal
Have you tried connecting an external monitor to your notebook, to see if there is a display?
Since your computer does not automatically shut down again until you press power again, it is possibly the display itself that is the problem.

  • T61 Fan Turns On And Then Off Right Away

When I try to boot my T61 the lights blink, the fan turns on and then after a 1 or 2 seconds the fan turns off and the laptop does not boot up. Nothing comes up on the screen, no beeps as well. I tried to boot the laptop without the hard drive and cd drive but still got the same problem. I also tried booting it up without the RAM (suggested by someone on a different forum) but on trying to do so I would get many beeps.
I started getting this problem today after my laptop froze on me while I was working so I did a hard reboot on it. It wouldn't reboot after that. I had changed my LCD screen and CPU fan around 2 months ago and the laptop was working perfect since the replacement.
Any help on this issue will be highly appreciated.
