Fan wont stop running

I updated to Mac OS X 10.4.9 this morning and the fan in my IMac has been running constantly. Is there anyway to turn it off and/or why is this happening?

Hi croth75!
No, you wouldn't want to shut down any fan. They're built to run to meet the demands of the system. There may be some temporary conflict of instructions within the system causing the fans to run at unusual speeds. The best way to resolve this conflict is to perform a reset or two that should re-synchronize the controllers within the system.
The first thing I would do is restart the iMac. The second thing I would do is shut down, let it sit a minute, then startup the iMac.
If the fan is still the only thing bugging you - check the System Profiler's listing of the "Boot ROM Version" and the "SMC Version" against the Firmware Update's Read-Me to verify that your Core Duo iMac's firmware and SMC firmware are up-to-date, or if you have a Core 2 Duo, you only need to check the firmware. If necessary, update the firmware or the SMC firmware (one at a time). http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303903
Once it's up-to-date, reset the SMC by following these instructions: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Since it's an absolutely no-risk procedure, it may be repeated several times until one feels certain they've done all they can with that possible solution.
If it's then necessary to find another solution, try a single PRAM reset. It's NOT something you would do every day - but to reset the PRAM:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following four keys on the keyboard: Command (Apple logo), option, P, and R. You will need to hold these four keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Start up the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-option-P-R keys. You should press this key combination immediately after the startup chord sounds, and certainly before the gray screen's Apple logo appears.
5. Hold all four keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chord for the second time. The PRAM reset will reset your sound level preference to the mid-point, so the second time may well sound more or less loud than the first.
6. Release the keys.
Also probably reset will be Startup Disk in System Preferences.

    Choose the method for:

If this does not help, you may have to take the MBP to the Apple Store  to have it checked.

  • Emac Fan wont stop running

How do I get my emac fan to stop running? Computer is working fine, but fan is on constantly and the noise is driving me crazy.....

The eMac doesn't have temperature-based fan control like notebook computers. It's designed to run all the time unless you put it to sleep. Our eMacs have served next to my G4 tower; the tower mostly masks the noise from the eMac.
The third-party fan control utilities I found on VersionTracker list nothing for a G4. The oldest processor they support is a G5. Maybe someone else has another source.
With a large CRT monitor plus all the other heat-producing computer parts sharing the same case, I would be reluctant to do anything to slow the fans on either eMac we have.

  • 690 fan wont stop running

So my dino 690 has a stuck fan for years. I have finally decided to address the problem. Any quick fixes here? Dont like to spend a lot of money.

Stuck on or off. In both cases the easy answer is to replace the fan. Some Dells have the temperature sensor for fan control located on the fan itself.

  • Just updated to 10.7.2 and the fan on my 2011 mba wont stop running.

I updated my 2011 Macbook Air to 10.7.2, and now the machine is really hot and the fan won't stop running. Any idea how I can make this stop?

There is likely a program or process that is taking up most of the CPU.  If you open Activity Monitor and sort by the % CPU column that will tell you which process it is.  If its a program that don't need then you can simple quit it. If its something you don't recognize or something that you need to have running then report back and then the next course of action can be figured out.
I had this problem with the Dock.  Deleting the dock preference file then restarting the Dock process addressed it. Your situation may be different.

  • Fans wont stop blowing

The fans of my Imac 20inch 2007 wont stop blowing. Here the thing:
After removing a stuck CD in de DVD drive the fans started to blow continuously. I didn't replace any drive, just put it back as how it was. That's for 2 years now and I'm at the moment that I get crazy. Over these 2 years I tried every thing to get it back to normal. Tried the unpluging power cable way. Tried hdd fans control and smc fan control. And tried all those little things that works for other but not for me. All the temperatures are normal and the Imac runs still smoothly after these years. But the noise of the fans is getting to much now!
Somebody any idea what might cause this problem.
    Many many thanks.

  • After fresh Mavericks Install Fans never stopped running on full speed. What to do?

    Hello
I had Mountain Lion installed this afternoon, but wanted to upgrade to Mavericks. I went the upgrade path through the Mac App Store, but after the install several things still weren't working properly (as they had been with Mountain Lion), so I erased the disk an reinstalled Mavericks from scratch. Now, at the time in Mountain Lion Finder kept freezing the MBP at 100% of one of it's cores, which heated up the CPU quite a bit. I therefore installed smcfancontrol to have quick access to a setting I called "Cool", essentially running both fans at full power. When I decided to reset the system, this setting was activated. Now, after the clean reinstall of Mavericks, the fans are continiously running at full speed (as in 5940rpm). In smcfancontrol I cannot set the fan speed lower than that, as it seems to be the system minimum now. I can't set them higher either, but if I choose the pre-defined "Higher RPM" setting, the fans manage a whopping 7k something. Didn't sound healthy though, so I'm keeping my fingers away from that.
Anyway, is there a way to reset the fan speed defaults?
    Specs:
    Model Identifier:          MacBookPro10,1
    Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
    Processor Speed:          2.7 GHz
    Memory:          16 GB
    SSD: 512 GB
[EDIT] I found out how to change the defaults of smcfancontrol (there are config files; ~/Library/Application Support/smcFanControl/Machines.plist for the machine "defaults" and ~/Library/Preferences/com.eidac.smcFanControl2.plist for the preferences)
Hope this helps anyone in the future, now I just need to find out what the default values are for a MBP =)

    I have a similiar problem.
I updated to Mavericks last night and now only one of my fans isnt working.
    I tried Smc reset.
I also have Istat Pro and I can see the right fan is not working.
Does Apple reply to problems here?

  • Mac Mini fans wont stop (on or off)

This suddenly happened while I was using it, I then turned it off for about 45 minuets and still the fans kept going. It sounds like there going at full speed all the time. Also when I check the Activity monitor I have only FireFox going at .7%. I never opened the Mac for any repairs etc.. Also the air coming from the back is cool air. The only way I get them to stop is when I directly unplug the Mac itself. Is this something I can fix, or will I have to take it into an apple store?

[smcFancontrol|http://www.eidac.de/?p=180] could help with that, but you shouldn't need to resort to such tools.
or what else can I do?
have you run +verify disk+ and +permissions repair+ sessions using disk utility ?
have you tried _*resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM*_ ?
have you tried running _*Apple Hardware Test*_ to check for hardware problems ?
have you tried booting into _*safe mode*_, then rebooting normally ?
if none of the above helps, i would think it's time to call Apple for an appointment ...
    good luck !

  • ZenWorks Add-on wont stop running

I read a bunch of threads that talk about not getting add-on images to
work. I need to get them to stop working. I created an image that
automaticly logs in as local admin on the first few boots. This works
great as I found if you log into eDir applications may or may not run based
on other applications assigned to that user. When I log in as local admin
(workstation only) all add-on images run great. The problem is that they
continue to run as most users who log in as well. These applications are
installs (like GroupWise) and tend to casue problems when installed over
    themsleves over and over.
So the computer images with add-on images
Reboots as local admin and installs applications
First User logs in (all add-on's re-run and casue posible errors and a reboot)
First User logs in again (no problmes)
Second User logs in (all add-on's re-run and casue posible errors and a reboot)
and so on and so forth. The applications are not assigned to anything at
all and are set as Force run when I made the add-on image. They are also
now set to Run Once (that has not made any changes)
Running ZenWorks 6.5 and will be using 7.0 after a few pressing projects
are done in a few weeks.
    Thanks
    Nathan

    Hi Om,
As said by Peter put the addon in mandatory and in the application event if the add on is stopped try stopping the SAP Bsuiness One.exe thread. SO that ur B1 application will close.
    Hope it helps,

  • HP Officejet 6100 e printer wont stop running

I have an officejet 6100 e printer.  This is not an all in one printer.  It worked fine for a few months.  Now it continues to run.
That is, the ink cartridges continue to cycle back and forth.  I am unable to print anything, because the cradle never stops runniing.  I have to unplug it or it will run forever.  I let it run for 1/2 hour to see if it would stop.  But it never did.
I have probably prited about 15 or 20 pages and had to buy new HP ink cartridges, so I hate to throw it away and waste 50 bucks worth or cartridges.
    Any suggestions
I am running Windows 7 on a Dell laptop.
    Thanks,

Sorry that you are having a problem with the printer.
See if you can unplug the USB cable from the back.
Hold down the (X) button and unplug the power cord from the back. Plug the power cord back in, while continuing to hold down the (X) red button.
Let me know if it stops.

  • Fan never stops running at high speed.

My motherboard is a K8NGM2-L which had BIOS 1.0.  I upgraded to BIOS v1.10 this week.
Before the BIOS upgrade, I would power up my machine, the fan (sounds like the CPU fan) would run at a million miles an hour and then spin down to no more than a hum. Nice and quiet. Sometimes I didn't know it was even on and my temps always stayed around 32C.
After the new BIOS, I power up the machine, the fan runs at a million miles an hour and stays there. It's the loudest machine I have ever had. My temps still stay around 32C.
I've installed CNQ and that doesn't help. I've installed PCALERT4 and that doesn't help. How can I get my machine to
be quiet like it used to be so I don't go deaf?
I don't know what other info to provide, so please ask any questions and I'll be happy to reply.
    Thanks

Thanks for your replies. My problem is fixed now. I took Murdoks advice and went looking for a speed fan setting in the BIOS. I found one that reads "SMART Fan Target Temperature". I set that one to 40C/104F and rebooted my machine. As soon as it came up, the fan revolutions dropped a lot and my machine is nice and quiet again.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Macbook Pro fans never stop running

Hey guys. Ever since this latest OSX update, the fans on my MBP run all the time, nonstop. Even when i've closed down all applications and most processes, those fans still pull 6k rpms. However, when i bootcamp into my Win 7 build, the fans barely run if at all. When i originally purchased the MBP last year, this wasn't an issue at all, but with these latest updates, it feels like things are slowing down and running less efficiently. What's the deal??

They run immediately coming out of sleep. On a restart, it takes a few moments, but they very quickly get up to 6200rpms.
Even now, the laptop has been sitting idle on my coffee table for 3 hours and the fans are both going full bore and the kernel_task process is at 658mb's and 89% of the CPU load. What in the heck is using that kind of power???
Finally, yes it's got enough air. I use a laptop stand or prop it up off the table every time i use it.

  • Help, my mbp crashed disk utility wont stop running

A couple of days ago, I was using firefox, google earth, and vuze.  I was trying to close some stuff down as my mac was slowing down pretty bad.  She locked up, couldn't force quit... persisted, shut down with the off button.  After that it wouldn't beboot, and I had a dark gray screen with spinning wheel.  I couldn't boot into safe mode, so I went to the disk utility it ran for many hours, and did nothing. It found errors, but did not progress in fixing them... Just said estimated time 1 minute.
    Any ideas?
    It's a mid 2009 intel 2.66ghz, I believe.

What is the SMART status of your hard drive? If it's "Failing," just replace the drive immediately. It will be much easier for you to try to recover data from it when your MBP is back up and running properly again. You'll need an external enclosure or a SATA-to-USB adapter and a downloaded copy of Data Rescue 3 or FileSalvage, both of which offer free demo versions that show exactly what the full purchased version would be able to recover.
    Data Rescue 3: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
    FileSalvage 7: http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id= 1
There is no guarantee that you'll be able to recover any or all of your data if the drive has suffered a mechanical or electronic failure.

  • IMac fan wont stop spinning after Apple repair

I have just had my two year old iMac repaired by Apple it just needed a new optical drive, all seemed to be good until I brought it home and plugges it in.
Now the fan is spinning loudly and all the time from the moment I push the start up button.
Please help as this is very annoying, I have tried rebooting several times and removing all the power cables and holding the power button down as suggested but it still keeps spinning.
Should I take it back to Apple? It used to be silent all the time.
thanks in advance for any advice

Yes, sounds like they forgot to transfer, reconnect, or perhaps even damaged a thermal sensor or a sensor cable.

  • The fan never stops running and is very loud!

SMC did not solve the problem.  Any other ideas out there?

My notebook is under the 2yr Total Care warranty so I'm not sure if opening and reversing the fan direction will void that or not...it likely will. I hate calling HP support, I've experienced the worst customer service EVER from them in the past three times I've called...thats another story though.
I use my laptop on a cooling pad. CoolMaster allows me to customize the location of the fans so I just put the fans directly under the HD and under the exhaust vents. Even with the fan on the laptop gets warmer than you'd think.
Someone else posted a very detailed response about hot between 12-16mos after buying it, your laptop should need to be cleaned...I've owned it since January...Its almost always used on a hard surface like a desk and about 8hrs out of the day its sitting on a cooling pad.
