Fans are blowing in 10.4.6

Hello,
some days ago, i have updated from 10.3.9 to 10.4.6. Since this time the fans of my PPC G5 2x2GHz are blowing much more than in the past.
Has someone an idea, why it is?
Greetings from Achim

  • G5 is not starting, Fans are blowing...help!

My mac is not working. Press button and seems to start ok, but after a few seconds the fans come on at full speed. The screen is grey with the loading icon but never gets further than that. I have cleaned the dust from inside and tried restarting but it made no difference.
Please I desperately need to get it working and have a mountain of work to do.

    Hi,
I had what sounds like the exact same thing happen to my G5 a couple years ago. After exhausting all options to fix the problem I ended up wiping the HD and reinstalling the OS. Hopefully you have anything important backed up. You can hire someone to try and extract any files your really need from the HD, but it will cost you.
The good news is, after reinstalling the OS everything worked beautifully again, and I haven't had any major problems since. I learned my lesson though that Hard Drives will fail occasionally - always back up.

  • 10.6.4 update: DirectoryServices loading CPU, fans are blowing

What does process DirectoryServices do and can I disable it? CPU is sluggish, DirectoryServices is using between 37 and 61% of my processor ever snce updating to 10.6.4 this morning. What is wrong?

All detailed in http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Networking/Reference/OpenDirectoryRef/Reference/reference.html and, no, you can't disable it. Based on this post and the your other one WRT mds and mdworker, you have serious issues with your OS. I recommend that you reinstall Snow Leopard and if that fixes those issues, then run Software Update and get back to 10.6.4. If not, then create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if that fixes the issues. Report back.

    Problem description:
I installed Yosemite on my MacBookPro 13’ early 2011, the fan is blowing on high speed.

I did SMC, also rebooted in safe mode, removed everything from spotlight, nothing seams to help.
In the activity monitor there are Dock, lsregister and Spotlight that together more than 300% of the cpu.

  • Fan constantly blowing on my iMac

Why is my fan constantly blowing on my imac

Now we know that the problem is caused by a process in OS X which is consuming all the CPU. This generates heat, that makes the fans work hard.
Open Activity Monitor, and choose "All Processes" in "Show" in the toolbar. Then, order the processes by CPU pressing the CPU button under the toolbar. Finally, telll us which processes are consuming more CPU

  • Not sure if fans are on/working?

have had a refurbed pbg4 17" - it seems to get quite hot - sometimes use it in bed on top of a piece of wood - this gets warm and goes thru to my legs.
Cant here a fan noise nor can i feel any wind around the notebook - is there a way to find out/test the fans - would re-booting into safe boot 9holding shift key down till fans blow) be the solution.
is there also a way to find out the temp the laptope is working at?

The easy way to test if the fans are working is to run the Apple hardware test. Find the OS X DVDs that came with your system, and insert the one that says, in small print on the DVD label 'AHT Version x.x'. Reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, click the arrow pointing to the right, and follow directions. You'll hear the fans come on when it tests them, or you'll get an error message if there's any issues. If you didn't get a set of OS X DVDs with your system, Apple will sell you a set for a nominal value, just contact Apple support.
To measure system temps, you can find several at http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/

  • How many cooling fans are in 13" MacBook Pro retina?

I just got a late 2013 13" MacBook Pro with retina display and I'm wondering how many cooling fans are in the machine. I've noticed when I use iTunes to play music/movies or use the iTunes visualizer, it gets hot. I've seen the videos on the retinas and I've notived that the 15" model  has two and I can't find any videos or pictures indicating whether the 13" has one or two. I know that the openings on the side are to bring in air and then pushes it out where the screen and the keyboard meet. I notice a lot of hot air coming out more towards the right of the machine than the left. I had a mid 2012 non-retina Pro but I had it replaced as it had too many issues and I know when I used it, it didn't get as hot when I did this stuff. I'm just making sure in case it's an issue, even thought I got this new MacBook on Monday 6/9/14. I'm also guessing it heats up faster since its a smaller machine and the components are a lot closer. And I understand that playing games or doing something that requires a lot of processing or graphics power will cause the machine to heat up since it's requiring so much from the machine. Like I said, I want to avoid having issues with this one. My last MacBook had three logic boards, two hard drives, hard drive cable, hard drive bracket, and clam shell replaced in less than a year of purchase in September 2013. When the hard drive crashed last week for no apparent reason last week, I took it to Apple on Monday this week and they finally made the choice to replace it completely and I upgraded to a retina just by paying the difference.

This is my mac's info. I got it as a gift from australia. Initial 3 months it gave me a superb service, but recently it's having a major overheating issue,it shoots up up to 87 degrees. Is it possible that any other components are damaged somehow? Usually the temperature shoots up while I play online streamings.

  • Only one of my fans are working on my macbook pro retina 13 inch late 2013 model. Is something wrong?

It appears that only one of my fans are working on my macbook pro with retina display 13 inch late 2013 model. Is some thing wrong? if so how can i fix it?

To my knowledge there is only one fan on all 13" Mac notebooks, Retina or standard screen. Not enough space for a second fan and no Discrete GPU to cool.
    So nothing is wrong.

  • My macbook pro keeps zapping me. even when the charger is not plugged in, my hands keep feeling tingly and the fans are running louder than usual

over the last two days since i updated my software, my laptop seems slower, the fans are running louder, and i keep feeling mild shocks (even without the charger). my hands feel really tingly and a little sore. what is going on?

    cheesecakeyumm,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller? (I don’t know if that would have any effect against  mild shocks, though.)

  • Fans are going trying to boot leopard on my imac

My G5 PPC Imac must be about 5ish years old I think. I want Leopard on it and am trying to boot the dvd with C press, the fans are really loud. might this not work? wishful thinking?

Is the Leopard DVD a retail purchased full installer?
How much HD space do you have left? How much RAM do you have installed?
Any problems that you are having w/your current OS must be resolved prior to upgrading an OS.
"Snow" Leopard (10.6) is for Intel Macs only. So make sure you are trying to install just Leopard (10.5.x).

  • [URGENT] Mac Pro not booting, Fan error but fans are working.

    Hello,
My server G5 is stuck on grey screen with spinning wheel. I ran the AHT and got the following:
    2FAN/4/8: CPU A INTAKE
All the fans are spinning. I would really really appreciate if I can get any help or advice. I tried searching for this AHT error but could not find anything solid.
This is our main server and its crucial to our organization and I am sweating bullets here.
I reseted memory and unplugged all RAID drives. The three LED on the Logic board are Red, Yellow and Green; Power On, Trickle and Open Firmware respectively.
    Thanks for any help.

Just to say that usually it helps to include the make/model of RAID controllers, whether it is hardware RAID or not. The Mac Pro Apple RAID card IS a PITA and is particular sometimes about drives and its battery reconditioning as well as mounting drives and time to create a hardware RAID5.
When a drive causes trouble it is often though not always because of directory being damaged and OS X can't even inspect to see if there is a system or if it can be mounted.
And because the G5 normally only has two SATA drives, to use three requires a bracket or something else to add drives, like Sonnet G5 Jive. And then a PCI SATA controller with internal ports. But that is just your average SATA controller.
If it was a Mac Pro the thread could and should have been moved to another forum. And you still refer to this as a Mac Pro, not PowerMac. Which leads me to wonder.
Molex y-splitters as needed in a G5 but three yrs for a set of drives, I'd say they were due for backup + erase/initialize and restore. Hopefully you kept them in shape with Disk Warrior during that time (don't rely on just Apple First Aid to maintain and repair/rebuild directories).

  • Fans are loud what should I replace them with and how?

Just like the subject says my fans on my power mac g5 seem to be a bit on the obnoxious loud side. Was this just with the early G5 models? Anyways I wanted to know if it would do me any good to by different fans for it. If so which fans do you recommend? How easy is it to to put onto the computer?
    -jim

I think pretty much all the fans are custom made for Apple, at least that's what they look like - not at all like the typical PC fans...
Which fans are loud? You could use Hardware Monitor to show how fast they spin - and compare to these numbers of other G5 owners. Which model do you have anyway?
(Check in /Applications/Utilities/System Profiler -> Hardware Overview)
And which graphics card is installed? Cause its fan might be loud (if it has one - the default cards usually don't) - it was in my case (currently Geforce 7800 GT) as well as with my earlier G5 (dual 2.0 GHz, 2003 model, with CTO Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB). The video card fan is replaceable if one has some experience. The rest of the G5's fans are more difficult. If a particular fan is bad, you might be able to get a replacement for it as a service part, from some mac dealer in your vicinity.
It may also help to carefully vacuum the huge heatsink on the G5 processors and air outlets in the back. The G5 must be off of course, and don't touch or even go close to the RAM or Mobo, as the vacuum machine might be electrostatically charged.
