Fans are Loud, Ran a Hardware Test Error Message Ensued
I just replaced the power supply on my Aluminum iMac 24 inch, this is a result of not being covered by apple care and it running out of warranty just a few months ago. After starting up i noticed the fans were considerably louder than normal, i opened it AGAIN to see if anything was causing any friction, and to my dismay i found nothing. I ran a hardware test and came up with an Error code;
4SNS/1/4000000:TLOP
can anyone decipher or tell me what this error code is? I'd like to figure this out, I'm guessing i may have missed or damaged a connection to a temp sensor?
Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
If you haven't tried it, reset the SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1806
Reset the PRAM and NVRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
No idea what that file is... Google doesn't either unfortunately. If the above suggestions don't work, it's time to take the iMac in for service.

Apple Hardware Test Error Messages
I ran a hardware test on my iMac and the following error message appeared.
4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1243
What does this mean?
Thanks guys,What prompted you to run the Hardware Test?
As far as I can tell, it's either an error with the Hard Drive or with the drive temperature sensor. If it were the latter, the fan cooling the drive would be operating out of its normal range.
Get iStat Pro and post the fan rpms, and temps, along with specifics on the model of your iMac.
http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/ -
I've carried out all the trouble shooting procedures. The fan is running @ 3899rpm and the temp is 26 deg celsius. (I'm assuming the sensor is working OK...it may not be) A SMART test was OK, can anyone please identify the code and suggest a solution.
Thanks
roger190There are temperature sensor on the Apple installed hard drives. Did you reattach this to the new drive? If so how well / badly was it stuck on? Was the sensor damaged during the install of the new drive?
The fact the fans are running @3899rpm shows something is not quite right.
Is it possible the new drive is faulty? See here:

Hope this helps -
Hardware Test Error Message - Mass Storage Error code ata 1/6/8 HD: 2,0
I have an imac 15" flat Panel, 700 MHz . after getting the flashing question mark, running or trying to run all the standard tests, (pram, Software Restore, disk repair, reinstall, kernel repairs) I never see the hard drive or volume. I saw it was a maxtor HD with 0 bytes at one point.
I now ran the Apple Hardware Test think I lost the Hard Drive...this is the feed back:
Airport- Passed
Logic Board - Passed
Mass Storage - Error Detected
Memory - Has Not been Run yet
Modem - Device Found
Video RAM - Has not been run yet
Error Code ata 1/6/8 HD: 2,0
Could anyone help me diagnose the issue? I think I can replace the HArd Drive myself, if I knew this was the problem and what I need to buy to replace.
Thanks,I have a different take to a brody having replaced my hard disk and opened my iMac G4 up several times. Many people find that Apple Authorized Service Providers tend to give extortionate quotes for such repairs. Feel free to get a quote yourself. I'll provide the same advice I've given to many many other Apple Discussions users who have successfully replaced their hard disk themselves.
The iMac uses a standard desktop PC hard drive. It is 3.5" wide and in the iMac G4 uses the IDE connection. The iMac 700MHz 15" has an ATA66 bus so can use ATA66, ATA100 or ATA133 drives but not ATA33 or SATA. You should buy a 7,200rpm drive with a cache of 8Mb or higher as this also increases the speed over the original 5,400rpm drive installed so you should get a performance increase.
Here is a list of suitable hard drives.
It's pretty fiddly to work inside an iMac G4 so you must be very cautious. Always take anti-static precautions. Here are three options for guiding you through the procedure:
MacWorld
xlr8yourmac
Service Manuals
I've also taken a fair few photos which you can find here.
I'd advise reading the reports on the xlr8yourmac's drive database so get other people's experiences first.
You must replace the Thermal Paste when you close the iMac up or it will overheat.
It's probably worth replacing the PRAM Battery whilst you're in there as these have a finite life (once they fail to re-charge you may start to run in to snags - it's only a $5 part).
The hard disk should be set to Master (link).
Some iMac G4 700MHz users have reported that they are unable to address hard drives larger that 128GB, there is an application called SpeedTools that can be used to overcome this addressing limitation.
You might also give consideration to installing a 512MB PC133 DIMM or an 18x DVD±RW Dual Layer burner whilst you do this update; both of which will have to be removed during the process.
You must be very careful around the video connector in the iMac; it really is very fragile. In fact there is no need to touch it at all in my experience.
It is possible that the ATA controller on the iMac's logic board has failed rather than the hard disk. Given the cost of the logic-board it would not be cost-effective for an iMac G4 700MHz.
Let us know how you get on.
mrtotes -
hello.
I am having issues with my 15inch retina mac 2012. Some apps for example safari crash every once in a while. Some times i get the grey screen of death.
My configuration is: CTO. 2.6 GHz Intel core i7 with 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 and 512GB flash memory.
I have recently replaced my screen as it was with burn in problems.
I tried to install Yosemite but failed several times. Just got the 10.9.5 Mavericks going again.
I ran the apple hardware test and got FAIL!
The error code read as follows: 4MEM/9/40000000: 0x79093f90
What do i do now? I am out of warranty and i can't upgrade to the new software.
I keep on having app crashes. I keep on sending reports to apple and there is no response.
Who should i hold responsible for hiding that there was a problem with my machine?
My warranty recently expired but i had the problems prior and i figured that if there was no response that maybe one day better software would fix app crashing.
Please suggest a course of action other than replacing main board with ram and cpu (too expensive).
Thank you in advance
KrisThank you for the quick reply
I live in Bulgaria (eastern Europe) so no apple store here no geniuses either

what are the meanings of Apple Hardware Test error codes 4m0t/4/40000003:hdd-1300 and 4m0t/4/40000003:hdd-1308?
Thanks - Even though I'm years out of warranty I got chat help from Apple (I said they should help me since the codes aren't published.) We covered three different questions, and although I didn't get a specific decoding of the error code, I got confirmation of what other comments here imply - it might have helped that I indicated I'd already been here - and useful links to how to do back ups, including to CD(s). (I don't have a lot of data on this computer yet)
Now I need to figure out how to decide how hot-to-the-touch is "too hot" for the metal frame at the top of the iMac to decide whether I'm getting adequate fan performance or insufficient. While chatting I initially reported it was cool at the bottom and warm at the top. Apple hadn't asked, but their response prompted me to feel it again, and I'd say the top was hot, not warm - I updated but Apple didn't comment further except to conclude after addressing the other questions that I should take it in for further assessment - don't really want to bother with that. -
I ran a hardware test and this was my error
I ran a hardware test and this was my error#4MEM/40/40000006:B:1 C:0 R:1 - what does it mean?
Sure, your Mac Pro's memory is installed on two cards that you can remove, and subsequently inspect or remove the RAM. Read here to determine where it is and what to do:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4433
If you're lucky, merely removing and reinstalling the memory modules may clear the fault. If not, it is possible one or more of the DIMMs (Dual In-line Memory Modules) has failed or is no longer meeting the Mac Pro's requirements.
Memory is not difficult to install and is not terribly expensive. Most vendors have a lifetime guarantee. -
Help and Advice Please : Hardware Test Error Alert
hello,
i ran the hardware test two days ago and i got error message like this :
4SNS/1/40000000: 'Tm0P'
can anybody tell me what is this ? i ran through the other mac forums and found that this is a logicboard problem ?
My mbook pro is running 5 months now, and seemed not to be having any problem. the fan is fine, no buzzin screen, etc.
what should i do ?
happy xmas and...
many thanks !I have recently been having a bad slowdown problem with my MBP 15" (only had for 2 months). My first real problem was when it suddenly slowed down and I powered it down to reboot. Nothing seemed to get power at all after this and it wouldn't start up, so I took it in to have the logicboard replaced since that seemed the obvious problem. Now I notice that it still suffers extreme slowdown after running for a few hours (even with no fans starting up). Sometimes it takes 5+ minutes just to open the system preferences, or anything. I just ran the hardware test and got a similar error code that this topic mentions (cant seem to create a topic even logged in).
4SNS/1/40000000: TB0T
Seems strange that the NEW logicbard would be faulty, but thought I'd get some feedback before I go back for the second time in 2 months......sigh.
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.9) -
Mac mini won't boot - hardware test error
my mac mini isn't booting... stuck on the grey apple screen with spinning circle.
have ran the hardware test on the OSX DVD and i get the following error
**ERROR*CODE***ERROR*CODE**
2STF/8/3: ATA-100 ata-6 - Master
**ERROR*CODE***ERROR*CODE**
i assume this means that the HDD is knackered ?The variable reports on the hard drive are not entirely unusual with a drive that has problems, but it's not a good sign in general that you are having issues with booting to the install disk. That has potential to reflect a controller error that could be minor in nature and even be as simple as a poor connection on the drive carrier which has both drives mounted to it.
Try booting to the OS installer again. If you can get past the language selection screen it means OSX (the very basic version on the installer) has loaded, and that's a good sign. There's no reason from that point that the Utilities menu wouldn't pull down as normal and disk utility run from there. If you can get that far, see if the internal drive is visible on the left of the disk utility app, and if so, select it (there may be two entries for it, either will do) then click the repair disk button. -
Can anyone tell me what apple hardware test error code apple hardware 4MOT/4/40000002: Exhaust-1153 or 1209 means? I am running a MacBook Pro
The motor on the exhaust fan has failed or is failing.

I have an iMac mid 2010. After Disk utilities said the drive was corrupt, I ran the hardware test (extended) 3 times. No problems. I than ran Disk utility again and got 2 messages in red…keys out of order, and ……Volume corrupt, can't be repaired.
I tried to do a system install, but message said…disk can't be changed. Will a complete erase and install fix this ?
Everything is backed-up.There's hardware and software.
Your drive could physically be in good condition but something has caused the file structure to be messed up (it just happens sometimes). The directory that keep track of files is corrupt. Disk Utility can help determine if that is the issue. In some cases it can repair the problem but it cannot do it to a drive that is being used to boot the system while you are doing that. You have to boot from another drive. Some things DU cannot repair and you need to try a stronger utility such as Diskwarrior.
A failing hard drive (one with mechanical issues) can be a cause of file structure issues but this is by no means always the case. Apart from looking at the SMART diagnosis feature of Disk Utility (and smart isn't totally reliable) there often isn't a way to tell if a drive is failing until it suddenly happens, which is why you need to maintain backups.
In your situation it does sound serious and not just minor directory corruption. You can try erasing (formatting) the drive, You may need to do this if it is really corrupt, in which case there could be underlying physical issues. I use old technology but if you have the patience you can try erasing the drive with the security option of writing zeros once (don't do more unless you are going on a 3 week vacation). This makes the drive not simply assume everything is okay by forcing it try every part of the drive by writing data. If something is gong wrong you may find it marks a lot of bad sectors, or flat out refuses to format. Then you know you need a new drive. -
Apple hardware test error 4mem/9/40000000: 0x8475d598
Any help would be appreciated I'm at work and my MBP crashed twice (Running Traktor Pro 2 with Drobo Mini as an external HD via Thunderbolt. second display daisy chained on VGA with a rotating desktop image to the TV's ) ...Just got this error code from my late late 2011 15in MBP after it randomly restarted and I ran the hardware test

MacBook (2009) Hardware Test Error VPOR-1.065
Hello,
I recently ran a hardware test on my 2009 MacBook and this was the error I received 4SNS/1/40000001: VP0R-1.065. The MacBook is currently running Mavericks and I just installed new RAM. What does the error code mean? How critical is the error? That error indicates a problem with the voltage sensor on the power bus. You should make an appointment and take it in for service.

Does anybody know what hardware test error code this is 4SNS/1/40000001: TCOH -1.704
Trying to track down fast running fan that will not reset and this error came up.only apple techncians have access to what those codes mean. It is sensor related, but as it is a hardware problem, you need to bring it into an Apple store or AASP to have it correctly diagnosed and fixed.

Fans are loud what should I replace them with and how?
Just like the subject says my fans on my power mac g5 seem to be a bit on the obnoxious loud side. Was this just with the early G5 models? Anyways I wanted to know if it would do me any good to by different fans for it. If so which fans do you recommend? How easy is it to to put onto the computer?
-jimI think pretty much all the fans are custom made for Apple, at least that's what they look like - not at all like the typical PC fans...
Which fans are loud? You could use Hardware Monitor to show how fast they spin - and compare to these numbers of other G5 owners. Which model do you have anyway?
(Check in /Applications/Utilities/System Profiler -> Hardware Overview)
And which graphics card is installed? Cause its fan might be loud (if it has one - the default cards usually don't) - it was in my case (currently Geforce 7800 GT) as well as with my earlier G5 (dual 2.0 GHz, 2003 model, with CTO Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB). The video card fan is replaceable if one has some experience. The rest of the G5's fans are more difficult. If a particular fan is bad, you might be able to get a replacement for it as a service part, from some mac dealer in your vicinity.
It may also help to carefully vacuum the huge heatsink on the G5 processors and air outlets in the back. The G5 must be off of course, and don't touch or even go close to the RAM or Mobo, as the vacuum machine might be electrostatically charged.
Quad G5 Mac OS X (10.4.7) 4 GB ECC RAM, Raptor 150 GB, Seagate 750 GB, GeForce 7800 GT
