Fans at high rpm in 10.6; OK in 10.5

I have a 3,1 Macbook Pro, with 2 partitions--my older 10.5 partition and the Snow Leopard partition I installed 6 months ago. When I ran the 10.6.7 update, I noticed the fans running high, frequently. I installed SMC Pro to check--and waking the computer from sleep, with no apps running, the temp will climb from in the 40s centigrade to 70, and the fans start blasting at 6000 rpm. The same test if I boot into the 10.5 partition is fine--the fans mosey along at 2000 rpm and the temp never gets above 50.
    I have reset the SMC several times, zapping the PRAM after. No change.
   Right now I have Firefox and Activity Monitor running, with Firefox maxing out at about 10% CPU usage, and I'm at 71 degrees and 6000 rpm.
   Any thoughts? Very aggravated.

FWIW--narrowing things down--did a re-install of 10.6 and the fans are back to normal--I am not ready to re-update to 10.6.7 yet--but the problem does indded seem to lie between 10.6.5 and 10.6.7

GX623 Fan hits higher RPM only when GPU is @ 105 degrees C ?

Hi, I've been doing some tests on my GX623 laptop. All clocks are at default, my motherboard BIOS is v1.0s and am stressing the GPU with Furmark. I notice that the main fan reaches higher rpm(can't tell how many %, I'd assume 90) only when the GPU has reached an unacceptable temperature of 103-105oC(read with RivaTuner) and the CPU- 88oC(read with speedfan). First of all I'd like to ask if this is common for other GX623s? If not then maybe it's my bios ? Either way, I do not believe that the laptop has been designed this way and would appreciate any help.

Bleh, I decided to open the lappy and see what's up inside. It's 1 year old so I thought that there might be some dust in it- there was. The was so much, that the fan was unable to blow the air out at all. Anyway, I cleaned up the heatsink and then decided that it'd be best to change the thermal paste as well. As I was doing that, I noticed that the CPU's thermal paste was rock-hard, there was no way that was conducting heat properly. Anyway, after having replaced all the thermal paste (with some not-so-great Spire Silvergrease pro) and having cleaned up the heatsink and fan, I decided to do some testing. Temperatures after stressing with Prime 95 and Furmark for 30 minutes: (RivaTuner)GPU:80oC (SpeedFan)CPU with turbo on: core1: 88oC core2: 85oC. Now, I haven't measured the CPU temperature before, but this seems a bit on the high side... Has any other GX623 owner done CPU heat measurements with turbo on ?

Router Fan Slow....other fan at high rpm

One of my Cisco router 2951 started making high noise from fan...after "show Log " it was found that one fan is at low rpm and other at high rpm. Ultimately the router after some time was not geting powered on. Another router was installed and was found that it was giving some burning smell.....Y this is happening....for safety purpose router is switched off..please help

Have you checked the vents at the back to make sure they aren't blocked?

Is it okay to leave fan at high RPM?

I just got my 2Ghrz Mac Book and noticed that usually it gets pretty hot. Now that you can control fan speed, is it okay to leave the fan at 5K RPM throughout the time the laptop is being used? I use it maybe 1-2 hours a day...And also, I remember on the older iBooks there was a connector problem with the LCD and mother board which would get worst the more you'd open and close the laptop. Has that been resolved in the new Mac Book? I open/close it once or twice a day, and don't want it to break.

The opening and closing twice a day should not be a problem at all.
If you just got it, it may still be indexing, creating some extra heat. Running the fan is certainly better than not running it.

IMac fan runs a High RPM and screen goes black after 10-15 min

20" iMac 2.66 purchased April 2008.
I know this has asked elsewhere most likely but I thought I would start fresh.
A few weeks ago my cooling fan started running at high RPM, with really no reason (sitting idle with no applications running). Less than a week later my screen would go black about 10-15 minutes after startup (computer stays on and fan still running). If I re-boot the black screen just appears more frequently (maybe two minutes sooner each time)
Of course I am just outside of my Applecare coverage window!
Also, I have a MBP and would like to access my iMac hard drive. I can't remember what commands to push to access another Macs hard drive.

I think you are referring to Target Disk Mode.

IMAC G5 fans running at high RPM

Hello,
I have a 20" G5 iMac and just had the motherboard replaced under warranty. Since the replacement my fans will start to run at very high rpm's fr no reason. It will happen even when the computer is not being used and no applications are running. It is currently at:
CPU 122 degrees
CPU fan 2996 rpm
HD 124 degrees
HD fan 4178 rpm
System fan 3098 rpm
I have called applecare and they had me do several resets which seemed to help for about 1 hour and then the fans have ramped up and not gone down in the past hour. This last time I was watching TV and heard a noise from the computer and low and behold it was the fans. Nobody was working on the computer and all apps were closed. I bought this computer in September 2005 and have had 2 lcd's replaced and a logic board replaced. I am getting frustrated with this, my first, Apple computer. Does anyone have an idea of why the fans are running so high? I never had a problem like this with my old logic board.

Have you looked in Activity Monitor to see if any applications are causing the fans to run? Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.

Imac fan running at high RPMs

Ignore it, unless you see 4 language screens saying you must restart, or the machine shut down on its own.
P.S. Odd you posted this to a forum that has nothing to do with your iMac or operating system. Was that glitch with the forums, or your mistaken navigation, or is your system the issue is happening on not the one shown with that operating system?

Macbook fan running at high rpm when doing nothing

My macbook a1181's fan is always running at a high rpm and a can't figure out why. I already checked the activity monitor, made sure there was no documents waiting to be printed (i have had this problem in the past), and I removed and cleaned the fan and vents. Could os x 10.7.5 be part of the problem? I had absoutly no issues with 10.6.8.

Check your activity monitor. Sounds like you have a program running in the back ground your not aware of.
You might also try to reset the SMC and/or PRAM.

Drive bay fans high rpm and whine.

High RPMs and a whining noise (i.e. fan noise) with iStat Pro widget displaying high (2,700+ rpms) for my drive bay.
I see that on my G5 one of the fans is located so that I can not blast it with canned air so as to rid it of dust build up... which is probably why there is a low decibel but high pitched noise when the drive bay fans rev up.
Any ideas on how to get to it without having to completely take my tower apart?
I've had my Energy system preference set to 'Highest' for a long time (since I read that overall this can prevent fan rpms from going extremely high) and it seems to have been okay.
But I'm guessing that over the years this one fan... which can not be blown off... has accumulated lots of dust that is causing the problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Activity Monitor (AM--in Applications > Utilities) is the better reporter of what's causing excessive fan activity as it calculates the CPU usage of each process. If you have not launched AM before, its default settings will not show enough detail to help. However, all you need to do to get a full picture of the load on your processor is to change AM's "Show" option from "My Processes" to "All Processes." Once changed, that setting is retained. Looks like this:
Others are reporting heating issues and short battery runtime after upgrading to 10.6.8. They all had Parallels emulation software installed. If you use Parallels, see this:

Fan running high when using word

never had trouble with the fan but i recently started using word more often which causes the fan to run at high rpms - i know it´s usually around 1800, word causes it to be around 6200 rpm.
this is quite annoying since it lasts as long as i´m using word. anyone knowing a solution?

I use the PPC version 10.0.0 of Word and it runs cool. Use Activity Monitor to see how much CPU % Word is using. Mine uses in the single digit percentage.
I wonder if there is something in Word's Preferences that is turn ON that could be turned OFF, something on the order of a virus checker or some other utility that is unnecessary, which is consuming a lot of power? I really have no better idea than that but thought I would through it out since it would not hurt to look and see if there is something suspicious in Prefs.

CPU fan at high speed due to power supply sensor

The CPU fan on my Imac runs at 3900 RPM. Apple hardware test provides an error code of 4 SNS/1/40000000:TpOP-131.000 which is the temperature sensor on the power supply. I opened the Imac and the single wire to the power supply is connected securely. At this point, the problem could be in the sensor wire ( which disappears into the wiring harness), the power supply sensor - which I assume is built into the power supply, or in the the logic board where the temperature information is processed. I have tried the SMC and PRAM resets with no results. The wiring harness is very difficult to replace, and the power supply is relatively expensive, so I would appreciate it if anyone who has solved this problem could tell me what the solution was. I would really like to repair the Imac and eliminate the loud fan noise.

Thanks for your response. I have performed the SMC reset you described many times with no positive results.
The apple repair manual for my Imac says to replace the wiring harness if you have this problem. A daunting procedure for me since you have to almost completely disassemble the Imac. It seems that if the sensor is disconnected (open circuit) the associated fan (CPU fan in this case) will always run at high speed. It seems to me that several failure modes would create this open circuit, and I was hoping that someone could identify how their Imac was fixed so I could hopefully determine the most likely effective repair. I have created an applescript program which I have set up to limit the cpu fan to 1500 RPM and limit the noise, but I would really like to have the security of knowing that the fan could respond to elevated temperatures if necessary. Mac Mini fan on high, UI frozen. Had to shut it off. Any way to tell what the problem was when I boot it back up?

I leave my Mac Mini on constantly as a HTPC. I came home after being at work all day to find the fan on high and the lock screen incredibly sluggish. I have no idea how long it was like that, it's never done anything like it before. I couldn't login because it was too slow, I had to force it to shut off. Is there any way to see what it could've been when I boot it up, such as log files or something like that? I was hoping to get in to see top or the activity monitor but as I said earlier, I wasn't able to log in.

I had TeamViewer 9 installed. The Preferences window that contained the Uninstall button would not open so I just moved the .app to the trash. Last night I:
Installed TeamViewer 10 as it was the latest version, I figured I had that one previously
Uninstalled it using the preferences pane
Realized from the /private/var/db/receipts (I think) entries that I had TV9 installed previously, not 10
Installed TeamViewer 9
Tried to uninstall TV9, found the broken preferences pane and remembered why I just deleted it in the first place
Upgraded it to TV10
Uninstalled it using the preferences pane
I'll check on it tonight, but I think it's okay. I want to do a grep -r -i "teamviewer" / when I get back to see if anything is left behind.

No, this problem should be solved.
The MBP shuts down when too hot, to protect itself. First see if it is a process running astray: start Activity Monitor (in Applications/Utilities) choose <all processes> and click the %CPU column: are there processes that are using more than 50% cpu power? If yes click it and quit it, and tell us which one.

IMac fan on high - Apple store didn't find anything

Here's the issue. After the computer is on for a period of 10-15min, the fan begins to escalate until it gets to full blast...and it stays there! After the computer is put to sleep or shut off for a long while, it goes back to normal until it starts up and then again on for 10-15min and issue comes back. Putting the computer to sleep can be problematic and appears to be a little sluggish. I took it to the Apple store. They did a complete diagnostic test and said everything passed! All hte sensors and boards are good. They said it needed cleaning, so I left it there so they could take it apart and clean it. Brought the computer home, and the same thing happens..NOT FIXED. Any suggestions before I take it back to Apple?

Similar problem with my older 1.5 Intel mini. Just upgraded ram from 512 to 2 gb and now the fan is running on
full constantly, never stops except when off. I rechecked the fan control connection and all else seems
fine. Also did the SMC reset but no joy. The fan control app shows it at about 90 degrees and the fan at
5100 rpm.
Curious how long the fan will last at that speed or whatever anyone else has found out about a fix?
The machine seems to be operating normally, with a noticable increase in speed with the extra ram.
The Activity monitor shows the CPU at about 3% when idle.
Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Experiencing increased channel noise levels on PXIe4497 with 1071 fan on HIGH

I am using a PXIe-4497 to collect microphone data and when I switch the PXI chassis 1071e fan to HIGH setting, the noise level increases. The chassis is outside of an isolated test chamber, so the noise isn't occuring acoustically. Please see the FFT plot below of fan on AUTO (white trace) and fan on HIGH (red trace). Has anyone had this issue?

There was some noise getting the pass through into the chamber. We added more sound insulation to block it out. Here's what it looks like with the added insulation (FAn on HIGH, white trace is with added insulation):
But as you can see there are ~256Hz harmonics. The data below is for MIC Y which is last channel the PXI-4492 (first module). The difference between AUTO and HIGH settings is now:

Auto and HIGH fan settings are close to being similar for MIC Z> Here are MICs X (white), Y(red), and Z (green) plotted together with fan on HIGH...X and Y are on PXI-4492 (last two inputs) and Z is on PXI-4497:
As you can see MIC Z doesn't have the 256Hz harmonics. We swapped the Z with the Y channels to see if it was MIC or channel related. Below is MIC Z in last input channel of PXI-4492 (where MIC Y was originally):
The noise follows the input channel, not the MIC. Here is the other side of the swap...MIC Y in first input channel of PXI-4497:
No significant change now between Auto and HIGH fan settings.
This seems to be input module related....
What now?
