Fans come on while asleep
I am using a 21.5 iMac (bought in Nov 2009 I believe).
While asleep, the computer fans will come on after variable time intervals. I hit the power button and the fan goes off only to come back on. The fans run only at medium levels.
I do have wake on lan turned on but I have disconnected the Ethernet cable and turned airport off. When I wake the computer with the fans going, Activity Monitor shows no process going except Activity Monitor. The only peripheral attached is an empty usb-ipod cable.
Any thoughts?

Hi all,
I'm sure this question has been asked before, so please forgive me ahead of time if this is a repeat. I've been doing some searching around the web on this, and I was able to find plenty of people asking questions about this, but never any solid answers.
The problem is with my powerbook when I close the lid to put it to sleep. Every once in a while, shortly after closing the lid, the sleep light stops flashing, then the fans come on (the bottom gets VERY hot), and when I open the lid I get nothing on the display and no response from the keyboard. I have to force a shutdown but holding the power button down to regain control.
I know that plugging in USB/FW devices while it's asleep will wake it up, but I have no devices connected (other than the power cord). Both my airport and bluetooth are turned off, and I don't use any PC cards.
Does anyone know what causes this and if there's a fix of any kind? So far the best work around I've found is to just shut the PB down instead of letting it go to sleep. The reason I'm asking is that over the past 5 years this has only happened a handful of times, but now I'm up to 3 times this week.
Thanks in advance for any responses!Hi, ggarthe. You have quite an odd problem, and I'm not sure what could cause it. The Powerbook shouldn't be able, let alone willing, to wake from sleep with its display closed and no peripheral devices connected, and doing so is certainly not good for it.
Next time this happens, as soon as you're able to start the PB up again, open the Console application and look at the Console log, which is a chronological record of events in the computer's recent life. Near the end of the file you should find a "System Sleep" notation representing the last time you put the PB to sleep, and following that will be entries telling (in Consolese) what happened next. People who understand Console logs (not including me) may be able to discern a cause for what your Powerbook is doing from reading the log entries shortly before and after the Powerbook awoke with its display closed. If you'll post 40-50 lines of log entries centered on the System Sleep entry and the unwanted wakeup that followed, I'll try to round up some expert interpretive help for you here. -
Intermittent Problem - Fans come on full
Hello Members,
A while ago I posted a kernel panic on this forum, and got some useful informtion. Thanks.
I have a new system, and what seems to me, a NEW problem.
The fans (somewhere) come one full blast (or something, DVD drives??). In any case the
system makes a very loud noise, which sounds like fans coming on.
The noise seems to be coming from the top of the system, near where the two DVD drives are.
I checked the system, while it was making this noise.
1. I stopped the video card fan momentarily - not the problem.
2. Stopped the gray fan at the rear by the cards, not the problem.
3. Stopped the gray fan near the front of the system, not the problem.
So it is not these three fans causing the noise. My latest issue with this system:
I put the system to sleep over night. At 8am, I hear the fans come on full (or whatever the noise is).
The system was still "asleep". I pressed keys on the keyboard, moved the mouse, etc. The system
would not wake up. I depressed the power button part way, no wake up there either.
Finally I pressed and held the power button down until system shutdown. I restarted the system a few
minutes later. The restart was OK.
I have (counting the system disk) 4 internal SATA drives
2 DVD drives
1 Lacie Quadra d2 running on the PCI ex - USB 3.0
2 G-tech drives running on firewire 800 (for general backup, and one for timemachine)
Processor: 2x2.66 6 Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 24GB, 1333 DDR3 ECC
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 5870.
This is a REPLACEMENT system from Apple! They could not fix a previous system (still under warranty), so they did
provide a new system (thank you Apple). BUT the older replaced system exhibited similar problems!
Any one have any ideas? Yes, I plan to take this system to the apple store, but the issue is so intermittent, that it is unlikely that
the system will make the noise in the store (plus I have to remove peripherals, etc)
Any info will help,
Thank,
Eric

Thanks for the confirmation. I ended up removing the PCI card and uninstalling the driver.
I am now running the drive from the USB 2.0 port on the computer. Lacie never owned up to
the fact that the PCI express card and USB 3.0 are not "safely" functional on Mac Pro with Lion.
I am testing the system, only time will tell.
Thanks again,

Boiling hot while asleep?
I've been having trouble with my AppleTV overheating. The surface gets to over 110 degrees F while playing a movie, and at times the HDMI video will flash, flicker, or go black. While asleep the AppleTV is right now about 108 degrees, while the room is an ambient 68. Thats a 40 degrees difference!
DaVBMan wrote:
Not to really defend Apple, but the case being a heat sink is why it is hot. If they went the traditional route, then it would 1, be bigger, 2, contain heat sinks (more parts) and 3, contain fans to blow the heat out (more parts and something else to power).
I think many relate heat to energy. Thinking, it is so hot, it must be using a lot of energy. Well it is more of the case of being tight and compact thus more focused heat not really using more energy. I would say the AppleTV is using less energy (and less parts thus less waste) than a similar product from somebody else.
As for standby mode...I know many have stated various outputs and since I don't know any of those that say they tested it, I cannot consider it reliable. However, the standby really is just sitting there waiting for iTunes to say it wants to sync. Really not doing much. If you really don't like wasting energy, why have your WiFi always on (that is all it is doing).
You are incorrect, heat generation is directly related to energy use. To produce heat you must use energy, the Apple TV radiates a significant amount of heat from its Heat Sink surfaces (case).
In standby mode the Apple TV is still running the power supply, HD, internal fan, WiFi, processor and TV Output (allthough it shows a black screen the output is still on).
The Apple TV internal power supply is rated at 48 Watts.
There is very little difference between the power used when on or in 'standby'.
If we are generous and assume that the Apple TV in standby only uses 30 watts (I suspect it is in fact higher).
If you use the calculator here :-
http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/howmuch.html
And select a 30 watt device (like the Playstation 3), you can see that it costs $50 a year to run the Apple TV in the NY area.
In the UK I used the calculator here :-
http://www.ukpower.co.uk/running-costs-elec.asp
Using 30 watts for the Apple TV, makes a running cost of £28.63 ($42) a year.
This is a total waste of money and resources.
Yes I can turn of other devices and I do. It is a pity that other people don't, if we all did we would like in a far better world, that might have a future.

Running hot, fan comes on every few minutes
I have recently had my powerbook G4 in for repairs to the LCD 5 times in the past few months. Now, it has started running hotter than usual and the fan comes on every few minutes while I am working.
Any ideas about what might be going on would be appreciated.Maybe a short circuit somewhere at the LCD panel that causes the PB becoming hot very soon. Was the LCD issue a warranty repair ?
I would ask the company that did the repair, respectively Apple (if it was a warranty) for assistance. -
Does my iMac check for new Mail messages while asleep?
The Energy Saver settings on my iMac are to sleep the display after 15 mins. and the computer after 20 mins. and I do check "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep whenever possible."
Two questions:
1. *Is permitting my hard disks to sleep helpful or harmful to my iMac in the long run?* I care less about energy costs than the long-term health of my computer. So what's worse: spinning the hard disks down (causing wear and tear) or constantly exerting the disks by never letting them rest?
2. This is the key question for me at this moment: *while asleep, does my iMac retrieve new email messages?* This is an issue because I have a number of Rules I've setup within Mail on my iMac that move messages to certain folders. So if the iMac is asleep while I'm out and about, these messages clog up the inbox on my iPhone's Mail app until I come home and wake the computer (I have a gmail IMAP account). Also, does checking the option to put the hard disk to sleep affect my iMac's behavior in retrieving email while the machine is asleep?
I'd appreciate any clarification.
Grant1) There are lots of arguments about all kinds of esoteric questions and whether you should spin down the drive or not sounds like a good candidate. Drives do die of course, but in the greater scheme of things you and I are more likely to either replace the drive for something larger or replace the computer before that drive dies.
2) If your computer is asleep it cannot check for mail or do anything else for that matter. End of story. Assuming you have broadband, when you restart/wake your computer it may appear that mail has been accessed while the computer was asleep but that's because your mail application probably checks as soon as the computer was awakened/restarted. -
Mac pro 15 fan comes on and then mac is frozen with blank screen
While my mac pro 15 is plugged in and cover shut the fan comes on all of a sudden and is loud . I open the cover and the screen will not come on . I have to shut down with the power button then restart. This has just started. Is my hard drive getting ready to crash?
Ikosova,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that causes its fan to be better behaved? -
I have an old imac G5 (non Intel) The screen went blank but the fan turns very loudly. I cannot reboot the computer. whenever I start it I get power and black screen and the fan comes on loudly after about 30 secs. I have tried rebooting pressing varius keys, but no luck. I once got the flashing question mark, but I can't get that either. I'd like to reboot from the disc, but I cannot insert a disc. Any help out there??
If zapping the PRAM does not get it working, it's time for a new iMac. Repairs will not be worth the cost. Put it towards a new iMac.
I've been there, done that. Had my burial last summer. -
PS and CPU fan comes on merely by plugging in AC power
I am repairing a friends Athlon xp machine and have tested everything with extras.
I put a new MSI KM4M-V board in. The pc runs xp fine, etc., etc., however, when shut down the pc, Windows shuts down, but the ps and cpu fan stays on. Indefinitely. I have to either flip the on/off switch on the back of the ps or pull the damn plug.
What gives?
When I plug the thing in cold, same thing; the fans come on and then I press the start button whenever I want and the system posts and boots normally.
A motherboard Short? I checked the switch and even pulled the connector; the fans still come on when I plug it in.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
J RomulusYes, I've let it run for hours after Windows shuts off, it simply doesn't go off.
Simply plugging it in or flipping ps switch, the same thing; ps and cpu fans come on automatically.
I've read all the APIC threads; if I were strictly having problems shutting down, maybe it be that. But it is so strange that it does it from a cold start.
Got to be some kind of short, or else a bad board. -
My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) has cursor problems when the fan comes on.
Hi, I have been trying a variety of recommendations to see why my MacBook Pro seems to be having slowness issues. yes, I took it in to the Mac store and they found nothing. I have tried some other things that I think may have helped but now I see that specifically the cursor goes crazy when the fan kicks in and when the fan goes off it is okay again. I have run SMART Utility & I didn't see anything from that.
The fans coming on and the cursor going crazy are a correlation, not a cause-and-effect.
The fans come on when measured temperatures inside your computer are getting too high. The fans come on to try to exhaust the excess heat. If the cursor goes crazy at the same time, this is likely to also be caused by the computer getting too hot, not by the fans.
This is one possible cause:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity -
24" iMac - fan comes on, Mac won't sleep
Sometimes when I try to "sleep" my Mac, the fan comes on, the screen blanks, and then immediately it comes to life. Other times the fan comes on, even though I don't think it's overheating, and then maybe I can sleep it, and maybe I can't.
Anyone else seen this problem? It's not the end of the world, but it's pretty annoying!!I spent 25 minutes on the phone with AppleCare and we did a lot of things like resetting the PMU, the PRAM, reparing the hard drive, trying to do the same with another user account. It turns out it's a hardware problem and I need to send the computer to a service center...
Basically: no solution we can find on our own.
My iMac is 20 days old so that makes me quite unhappy... -
My G5 wont boot. The fans come on slow and then get faster. Any ideas?
I was given this Mac G5. It will not boot. The fans come on slowly, then get faster. I am not sure where to start. Not even sure what software to try to load... any ideas would be great... thanks OIIIO
Hello, did you get any OSX Install Discs with it?
Hold option or alt key at bootup, do any boot choices show up?
Any other Macs with Firewire around? -
the text and phone ringtones come on while I'm talking on my IPhone4. What do I need to change to not hear the actual tone?
Engage the mute switch while you're on the call. It's the little slider switch over the volume buttons on the side of the phone.

MacBook Pro - Intel - Fan comes on in Standby very loud -Can this be fixed?
Hi
I've just bought a MacBook pro Dual core Intel and Ive noticed that when it goes into standby the fan comes on very loud and stays on. Do you if there is a way to solve this?
ThanksIs your machine under the store replacement policy period?
If it is, contact them and ask for a replacement.
If it isn't, run the hardware test:

And give the results to AppleCare:
