Fans (just to be sure)

I am sorry to everyone to post another message on this but after reading everything that is here, I would like confirmation that changing my logic board is the next step.
We have a 20" G5, 2 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM running 10.4.2. With only Safari & XRG running the fans regularly (every 30 seconds or so) cycle up from:
CPU: 1500
Hard Drive: 2300
System: 1700
to:
CPU: 4400
Hard Drive: 6000
System: 4000
They run at these speeds for approximately 10 seconds and then slowly go back down to the values above.
This is with the temps at (and they are steady at these values throughout):
CPU T-diode: 120 deg. F
Hard Drive: 59 deg. F
and with CPU usage at only 5%. The more things you do - the more often the fans cycle and the longer they run at the higher speeds.
I've done an SMU reset - no luck. Is there anything else I should do before changing the logic board?

Before calling Apple, let's try something else. I agree with Miriam that your temps are good, but the fans are acting strangely. That makes me think it is a software issue. Since resetting the SMU didn't do anything, it is likely something in the OS itself.
When you do your system updates, do you use software update, or do you take the extra time to download the combo updates? I see that you are still running 10.4.2, but there have been 4 more updates since then, some of which addressed the software that controls the fans.
Follow THIS link to the combo update. I pray that you have broadband, 'cause this one is a doozy - LOL!
Follow this process -
1) Backup your data, preferably by cloning to an external FW drive. If you do clone, be sure to test the clone to see that it does boot your Mac.
2) Download, but do not install the combo update.
3) Repair permissions. I use OS X Cocktail and run all the scripts available, but repairing permissions is the only essential one.
4) Unplug all USB and FW devices except keyboard and mouse.
5) Reboot, install update, reboot, run Cocktail (or repair permissions) and reboot again.
After that, if it was OS related, it should be fixed. If not, then perhaps it is something physical on the midplane that would justify a replacement.

mac mini fan just sped up to 5500 RPM
temps are normal though, no overload to system.

The first thing I would try is to perform an SMC reset on the system:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, +making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.+
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
If the fan continues to run at full speed after that, does it do so right from power on, or on;y after the system has been running a few minutes?

  • Fan just runs at start up

mac pro (about 6 years old)..on latest OS that it can take.  at start up the fan just runs and the light on the front just blinks..nothing on monitor

the light on the front just blinks..
That is an indication that there is not enough good RAM to start up.
Note that in older Mac Pro with memory in pairs, if one member of a pair is not working, both are unusable. So in some cases, mixing and matching may produce a pair that works.

Go to Crucial.com and use one of their two methods to determine what upgrades are available for your Mac:
I would purchase the modules from Crucial as they are very reliable and wiill work with you if you have problems.

    Hi,
What version of VISA are you using? What version of MAX?. What OS are you using?
You can try using the lastest version, NI-VISA 3.0. The installer also includes the lastest version of MAX (3.0). The installer can be found in the Driver and Updates >> NI-VISA

Depending on which country's store you are in, the previews are supposed to be either 30 or 90 seconds.
The last few days there have been several posts here that they are not getting the full preview.  There is certainly no setting to control that, so I suppose the problem is at the store.
My suggestion is to try again in a few days, or to purchase from another online music download retailer.

  • IMac G5 won't boot and fan just runs

I have an older iMac G5 that has always been a little flakey...it would just shut off for no reason intermittently.  For the most part, I could deal with that as this is no longer my primary Mac, but when I did the last iOS update, my external TimeMachine drive started getting errors - won't write because the drive was read only and now, when I turn on the computer, it won't boot...the fan just runs loudly.
I researched this and tried the following:
Reset the SMU - didn't resolve
Unplugged everything and rebooted - didn't resolve
So I have a couple questions since I'm ready to toss this computerI have a current Time Machine backup, but don't have a machine to restore to
Is there a way for me to get at the Time Machine backup (I think I can just plug it into another Mac)?
How can I get my iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, etc. files off the backup and is there a way to import them into my existing applications on my MacBook Pro?
Any help would be VERY much appreciated!!

You may have the old exchange/repair program power supply capacitor issue on your iMac.  You might be able to find another on my FAQ*:

Note, recovering to an Intel Mac directly from Time Machine may not be practical because of various issues with compatibility.

  • While I'm charging my mac my fan just started running abnormally loud, what do I do?

My fan just started to be abnormally loud when I charge my computer. When I unplug the charger from my computer it stops, but I just have never heard the fan run so hard. Is my computer going to over heat every time I charge it?

    Reset SMC

    Choose the method for:

If this does not help, you may have to take the computer to the Apple store
    to have it checked out.

  • Pismo Powerbook G3 - won't start! Fan just sounds like a vaccume cleanener!

    Hi everyone,
I was running Photoshop under OS 9 for the first time today (Sunday April 30th 2006) when a severe error occured.
When the battery OR the A/C are plugged in, it doesn't startup or respond - only the vaccume-cleaner like fan kicks up again.
    ::: How this occured today:
It was sitting, plugged in with an open .jpg image of my mother and I onscreen. The powerbook was alone on a table, plugged into the wall.
I sat down listening to my iPod, and without having touched it, watched the screen glitch out (turn a shade of green, and tile in 3" wide vertical bands). Numerous strangled and frantic beeping sounds emit from the speakers, and the internal fan (on the left side) continually rev up and down. The screen went black after about 10 seconds of this - and would not respond to anything until I unplugged it and pulled the battery.
I've only had this powerbook for two weeks - is there any reason or solution for this issue?
    Thanks in advance everyone!

    Blayne,
Does this powerbook have some kind of a return policy from the buyer? If so, you may want to consider it.
As Tom suggested, you may want to try reseating the microprocessor card, but first...
    - A partitioned HD would not cause this issue.
    - The white screen with black text is either a kernal panic in OSX or it has for some reason booted into Open Firmware, then quickly shut down or crashed.
    I would first try this:
    - remove the main battery, disconnect the power adapter, remove the DVD-ROM drive from the media bay and disconnect all peripherals; be sure the display is vertical or the 'book will want to tip backwards;
    - reset the power manager; press the reset button for 10 seconds on the back panel;
    - now connect just the power adapter and try starting.
If you get the startup chime with the white screen/black text/quit as before, make sure the 'book is shut down (just unplug the power adapter, then reconnect it), then reset the PRAM. Assuming the 'book will start as before with a startup chime, you may be able to reset the PRAM. Press/hold the four keys for two startup chimes, then release.
If no change in the behavior, I would follow Tom's advice and reseat the microprocessor card. Here's what to do:
Remove all power > lift off the keyboard (do not disconnect, just lay it face down on the palm rest) > remove the aluminum heat shield > remove the top memory module > press down •VERY• hard on the right side of the microprocessor card next to the HD and closest to the palm rest. Do not be afraid to press hard.
Now, before any reassembly, plug in the power adapter, wait a few seconds, then press the power button. If it starts, allow it to finish booting, then press/hold the power button until it shuts down. Reinstall the top memory module and try the same startup process.
There are many other troubleshooting suggestions but let's see what you get to this point.
This link shows the aluminum heat shield to remove and the microprocessor card with the memory module in the top slot. If you enlarge the bottom picture, you can see the module to remove. Do not remove components than I have not mentioned...the takeapart guide describes a full disassembly.

  • JUST TO MAKE SURE....

i just bought some ram from 18004memory.com and this is what i got:
    2GB KIT (1GBX2) DDR 333 PC2700 FOR POWERMAC G5
i have the 1.6ghz g5 and wanna make sure this will work for sure. or other wise i am an idiot. thanks!

I read more and more about RAM problems and making sure you have Mac compatible RAM upgrades...
I have added RAM to my G5 twice... I walked into CompUSA, told them the type/speed/size I needed and they sold it to me with no questions about my computer.
It has always worked fine for me.
Did I get very very lucky (twice)?

  • Macbook PRO Fans just died. Now what?

yesterday i was working fine with my Macbook PRO Core Duo, just bought a month ago by second hand in ebay. Everything was ok (I was learning how to live with the intense heat of those models of computers) And then, the problem started. One of the fans started to sound as if there was a cat diyng inside... something, like this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=uwuMcFt07x8&feature=related , i downloaded the istat pro, and then i noticed that the right fan shows 0rpm, and the left one 1000rpm... i just dont want to put a game on the macbook pro or open the motion app: i dont want to have more problems with the fans, when the fans start to use it sound lot of loud, and the right side of the macbook pro heats a lot.
I just want to know, what can i do now? i have applecare but is still at the name of the original owner, not my name, i can send it anyway? or i must wait until the original owner gives me the applecare? Thank you very much, and just to know, how much time takes to replace de fans and send it back =(? Thanks...

Thank you, but i need my laptop for work and i cant just stop to use it. i will go this Wednesday for fix my computer, but i need to use it today, it´s ok if i use and external Fan (i mean, common domestic ones) just for take that heat down until tomorrow?, i noticed that, with a fan at the side of the computer really cools the computer itself...
Also i have a question, the computer before it was really hot, when i use the computer normally the computer heats up A LOT, and i mean, A LOT... like 81C (177 Farenheit) without the fans spining or an external fan... is that ok? or something's wrong with my computer? i was forced to use third party apps for control the heat (Like smcfan control) because the heat was just too much,... there anything i can do for solve this? Thank you...

  • Video and audio not sync when i play all forms of video. from music videos, to tv shows. but they play perfect on my iPod. and tv shows display out of order on iPod, but in correct order on iTunes/computer. I even ran a virus check just to make sure.

audio and video do not syncronize.  all forms of videos. music videos to tv shows.  what do i need to do the syncronize them again
they are in sync on iPod, but not on computer.
another issue that might be from the same cause is, the order of episodes of the tv shows i have downloaded,   they appear in order on computer, but on iPod they show out of order.
any tips on how to fix this would very much help.
    thank you.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
An old version of iTunes will cause this and mess up the videos on your iPod. Always make sure you always use an up-to-date version of iTunes.
Make sure all the software on your computer is up to date...
    iTunes
    iPod Updater
    Updating iPod's Software
You will then need to restore the iPod and then let iTunes update your iPod and put your music, videos, etc. back onto your iPod...

  • Just to be sure, .me email will still work

after June 2012, it's only idisk, gallery and iweb that won't, is that correct?

If you do not migrate from MobileMe to iCloud your email will cease to work at the end of June.
You can migrate from MobileMe to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard: when asked to confirm that your Mac is running Lion just lie and say 'yes'. Of course you won't be able to access iCloud directly from your Mac.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it.
This will be the situation with Snow Leopard when you have migrated:
Your email, calendars, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud. Contacts and Bookmarks cannot be migrated from a Snow Leopard Mac.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery, will continue to work as before until next June.
Syncing of Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items and Keychains between Macs, and Mail Accounts, Mail Rules, System Preferences, Signatures & Smart Mailboxes between Macs & iOS devices, will cease altogether.
You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point. BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).
