Fans on an MBP

When I run widgets or apps like iStat Pro, etc. they all show that they can't find any fans. Is there a problem or are the apps the problem? Also, I used the terminal command to fire up my CPU and the fans only kicked in when it got to 8° before overheating!
**Is there a way to manually turn on the fans, or set it so that the fans kick on earlier?**
Via terminal or console or an app, i DO NOT CARE, this is rediculous. It gets so hot I have to put an ICE PACK on my lap so that I don't get 3rd degree burns!

The current versions of widgets cannot identify the fans in the MBP, so there is no problem there. Your statement about "the fans only kicked in when it got to 8° before overheating" doesn't make sense... You also don't provide us with a lot of information to help you troubleshoot. That said...
1) Make sure you have applied the latest firmware and SMC updates to your machine; these reduced heat levels markedly on my MBP, and eliminated the "moo" your profile mentions.
2) If you are experiencing the whine and/or chasis issues (not sure what those are), take the machine to a local Apple retail store (or call AppleCare) and ask them to look at it. A new logic board should eliminate the whine for you (and it is under warranty). My new logic board also lowered my machine's temperature by about 10°C, but your mileage may vary.
3) The manual specifically warns against using the machine on your lap for long periods of time; it's a notebook computer, not a laptop. Many users (myself included) recommend the iLap from RainDesign.
Good luck. Remember that you don't have to live with the whine -- AppleCare will take care of it. You may need to be a little firm (but polite), but they will do right by you...

  • Wow! but fan problem on MBP

I had Tiger and BootCamp 1.4 and Parallels on my MacBook Pro. I was cautious and backed everything up and WinCloned my bootcamp partition.
I'm happy to report the upgrade (yes I upgraded and not a clean install) took about 35mins and everything still works perfectly, including bootcamp and parallels. GREAT WORK APPLE.
However one small issue, the fans on my MBP run a lot faster and thus noisy now. iStatPro shows a CPU temp of 72 degrees C. With Tiger it ran at 61 degrees. Any ideas?

Interesting. I too upgraded from 10.4.10 to 10.5 with the same results re: tempatures are high. In 10.4.10 I installed an app. called "Fan Control" and it worked fine under Tiger. Does not seem to work in Leo. Looing for solution too.

  • Fan behaviour in MBP 1.83

    Hi there,
last week my Apple Service Provider swapped the logic board of my MBP because of the processor whine. He did it twice: after the first swap, the whine was still audible (but only with power supply attached), so they swapped it a second time.
No change, whine still audible, well, some kind of...
because now, the fans are running almost ALL TIMES!
They start right after booting, when I open Mail, browse the web, and are revving up like crazy when running VLC or similar.
CoreDuoTemp shows a processor temperature of never more then 52 deg Celsius, the MBP is quite cold right know.
But the noise is inaceptable. I can't think that this is considered to be "normal behaviour". This is what my ASP said, and he said he can't change something with it except sending the MBP to Apple for further examination, which will take 2-3 weeks (impossible for me).
So, any ideas/help to get out of this?
    TIA
    Matthias

Matthias, it sounds like the sensors were not properly reconnected during service. Only remedy is a trip back to Apple.

  • Left fan in my MBP makes some weired noise when shutting down

Hi, my model is 2.4 Late 2008, few days ago the left side of my mbp dropped on the table because I forgot to take out the headphone when I stood up.. Now every times I turn off the computer, the left fan makes noises that sound like the fan is touching to the cover (when the fan slows down). What should I do now?
    Thank you very much.

  • Are there fan noises from MBP retina 13inch?

i was thinking if i should upgrade to 15inch MBP retina (im within 14days of purchase), but there are lots, i mean LOTS of complaints about fan noises in 15inch
to me 13inch MBP retina has nearly non-existance fan noise which is good, has anyone who owns 13inch MBP retina experince any fan noises?
    kind regards

    Hi CouchP,
I know that there have been some reported issues of the fans running unexpectedly with the 15" retina display, but I stand to tell you that I have personally not had any issues. I've had my retina display since January and I use it all day for work and home and have not had any issues at all with my fan. I use istat Pro to monitor my fan levels and there has been no issue. Keep in mind that those who report issues here are because they actually have issues. Just think of the millions who do not report issues. Besides, the issues that have been reported are intermittent issues and have reported that the fans come on for 30 - 60 seconds and then quiet down again. It's no difference than if you were watching a movie or video which causes the fans to come on anyway.
Just my opinion on the matter. I LOVE my 15" book.

  • Max Fan Speed on MBP

I have checked my max fan speed for my MBP at /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan1_max and the value is set at 5700. Shouldn't the max fan rpm be around 6200? I have tried changing the file as root but I still am denied from changing it. What can I do?

Hi Here is a new software from Malwarebytes. MBAM is trusted by millions of PC users. It will find programs that aren't necessary on start up

  • Fan Noise 17" MBP

I just purchased a MBP 17". After spending about 24 hours with the machine, I have noticed that you can hear the fans running even at 2000 RPM. I have another MBP (a 13" 2010 model) and at the 2000 RPMs, you can not even hear the fan on the 13" It is silent.
Just wondering if this normal for the 17". Of course the fans are not very loud, but they can certainly be heard. Somewhat surprising since the 13" is silent unless the fan increases in speed.
Can anyone confirm whether they hear the fans on their 2011 17" at even low RPMs.
    Thanks in advance.

    - Have you really spent 24hrs on it? Then it's normal for a machine to heat up after 24hrs of use.
How hot is your home? do you keep a radiator near or do you live in a hot climate? Do you leave enough space for it to breathe? do you keep it on a flat surface? Do you keep it in bed on your quilt/blanket?
    As ewww pointed out is does have 2 fans. 13 has/had 1 and 15 & 17 have 2.

  • It is recommended to clean the fan of the MBP R 13 "?.

Hi, i bought this laptop on january 8 but, the laptop is Late 2012 so, i like to take care of my stuff, i'm very careful. It is ok if i clean the Fan with an spray or something?.

Problem with the Retina's is there is no user serviceable parts inside, so from Apple's standpoint you shouldn't have a reason to enter the inside of the machine to clean the fans and/or temporarily remove them to clean the cooling grill behind them that really get caked up with dust and lint.
Mine dissected was each side being half logged with lint, I removed it in a effort to save the machine but it was too late, you can see the residue.
There is no policy from Apple concerning this maintenance task, so if your under AppleCare or warranty I would advise taking it to them and getting the dumb deer in the headlights look from them because that's very well likely what your going to get.
It serves Apple's purposes and the store employees that your machine dies faster due to overheating because it turns over hardare faster and force you to buy a newer one.
If they discovered you have been inside the machine, stripped screw heads, break tape, painted screw heads etc., then they can void your AppleCare/warranty.
If you got one of the non-Retina's they are user serviceable inside far as hard drive and RAM, so if they found out you cleaned the fans it likely wouldn't be as big of a deal as long as you didn't break anything.
It's been getting worst each time Apple puts out a new piece of hardware as they close things up more and more and rig their hardware for lower turnover rates.
IF you want a machine you can keep a decade instead of only a few years, your going to have to get a Windows 7 tower.

  • Looking for a Fan Pad for MBP

I've heard a rumour that the AppleStore sells a cooling fan pad for their new ovens...excuse me, laptops. Anyone know of this, or where else in Toronto I can get one?

  • Frequent fan noise on MBP after upgrading to Mountain Lion

Just upgraded to Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro Early 2011. Never had an issue with the fan before, but not

I had exactly the same noisy fan problem after upgrading to ML. Called Apple. They told me to do an SMC reset, but that didn't solve the problem. Checked the Activity Monitor and saw that WDSmartWare (the software that came with a Western Digital external HD) was taking 157% of CPU. Don't understand how any app can take up more than 100% of the CPU. In any case, I uninstalled the software and the fan stopped instantenously. In fact, it stopped  during the uninstallation process itself. I hope I found the source of the problem.

  • MBP fans run constantly, CPU hot

Hi There -- The fans in my MBP run constantly with CPU temps up to 89c after downloading 10.6.8, even with just the Finder running. There's nothing hogging up CPU in the Activity Monitor, and I don't have Parallels. I've reset the SMC and trashed the Dock preferences multiple times as recommnded by others to no avail. Any other ideas out there? Thanks.

For anyone who stumbles across this post, I wanted to update what ended up happening. I decided not t purchase CoolBook, as I felt that would merely treat the symptom and not the cause of the overheating problem. My MBP sits on an iLap which in the past has always kept it cool. Something in the 10.6.8 update was causing the CPU to heat up extraordinarily with nothing unusual showing in Activity Monitor under All Processes, or anywhere else for that matter, with just the Finder running.
I decided to try downgrading to 10.6.7. I followed the steps outlined by member Alexandre in another post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3146928?start=0&tstart=0
When I was done, all was cool and quiet. Everything was back to normal. CPU temps dropped by 30 degrees Celsius.
I guess 10.6.7 will be the end of the line for this particular MacBook Pro until some kind of other fix becomes evident. Thanks again for the members that provided help. Much appreciated.

  • MBP: Fans turning up to 6000rpm during loading battery

    Hi there,
I have a Macbook Pro 3,1 and I have the following problem:
If I'm loading my battery, the fans of my MBP are turning up to 6000rpm. It is very loud!
When I bought my MBP, I had never such problems with loading the battery.
What's wrong with my Macbook Pro?
    Thank you!

I have the exact same problem as you, my MacBook Pro's fans spin up to 6000rpm when plugged in and then calm down about an hour after in unplug it... this is very annoying since I am in class.
When at 6000rpm, my cpu is at 65C, and when my fans are not running as fast (+/- 2000rpm) the cpu temp is at 78C!
I don't think that this is very normal and I have read that it could be good to run a Extended Hardware Analysis, using your Disc 1 installation that came with your mpb.
This procedure is tricky because I did it last night and it reported a sensor malfunction on my mother board, and this was when I did the shorter version of the test, this morning I did the extended version and no problems were reported... I'm very confused!
I have read that quite a few people have similar problems and they all seemed to have brought their mbp's in to be serviced, I might do the same, and so should you.
    Good luck!
    Mathieu

  • CONTROL YOUR FANS! Cool your MBP

I ran into this earlier today. This guy wrote a script that enables you to control you MBP fans.
Running them at 3500 rpm gives me an idle temp of 42C, down from 60C. Battery life is down 5-10 minutes.
Now this is a real LAPtop.
Download the file and install the smc folder into the applications folder. Then RUN the desired script and type in your password... LISTEN AND ENJOY! There's a read me included..
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/3cc9d6/

That looks great. Wasn't there a time when the fans of a MBP wouldn't kick in until 70-80 degrees? That is just insane. I very much dislike it when Apple puts looks/design over actual functionality. You've gotta find the balance.

  • Loud HD fan on MBP 15" (June 2009)

The last few days I've noticed the fan on my MBP running quite loud at times even when I only have one program running.
Should I take it to an Apple store to have it looked at? Anyone else having this problem?

On the PRAM reset did you wait for it to chime 2x before releasing the Option, Command, P & R keys? If you only let it chime 1x then the process wasn't completed and the PRAM was NOT reset.
If you did then try an SMC reset, be careful reading the instructions. You have to use the correct ones as this letter covers multiple models of Mac's each with it's own reset instructions.

  • After upgrading to 9.2 playing music fans on MBP are going crazy

I upgraded to itunes 9.2 yesterday now just playing a song the fans in my MBP are going at like 6000rpm which it never did before when using itunes, I don't have the visualizer running or anything processor hungry like that.
In Activity Monitor it shows itunes as only using 4.3% cpu.
I closed all other apps to make sure it wasn't any of them, has anyone else had this after updating itunes?
