Fans on when sleeping

Since upgrading to 10.5.7 my cooling fans have been starting up while my laptop is sleeping. This has happened with or without the charger connected, and I am unable to wake it once this happens and must force quit using the power button. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thank you for the reply. I have tried this, but I'm not sure if I plugged in the power adapter afterwards as is indicated in Step 4, so I'm trying it again. I've also run Disk Warrior and everything else in my arsenal, but so far, to no effect.
I've just noticed that my battery indicator lights remain on now, although I believe they are only supposed to light up when the test button is pushed.

  • My MacBook Pro fan runs while sleeping

My MacBook Pro fan runs constantly, even while sleeping.
The problem started about 2-3 months ago, but was pretty rare. When I noticed the problem, I would restart the computer and it would stop for 1-2 weeks. More recently it has become more constant, and now it always has the fan running when it's sleeping.
Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks!

Mine too. If you're worried you might like to try a laptop cooler like one of these:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=sr_kk_2?rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Alaptop+cooling+pad&keywor ds=laptop+cooling+pad&ie=UTF8&qid=1344763538
Not sure how well they'd work on a Macbook as there aren't any vents on the underside but it couldn't hurt and they're quite cheep.

  • Battery drains when sleeping

i'm sure this is inevitable since the battery continues to work even when the computer is sleeping. however, the whole thing will drain in less than six hours when sleeping. that's way, way faster than any of the powerbooks i've owned before. what gives?

Setting the emails to manual check may not actually stop the app from trying to connect to the server, especially if there is a poor connection. What you should try is making sure that you close the email app properly by pressing on the Home button for several seconds until the Home screen appears, then you can be sure that it is really off, and you might see better battery performance.
    Hope this works for you.

  • IMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart

Just bought a brand new 27" iMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) which shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart (ie completely dead).
In order to restart, I have to unplug the power cord from the computer, hold power key down for 10secs, replug in and it then starts up. I returned to the store and they spent a couple days letting it go to sleep etc and overnight and for them it was fine. Woke up no problems. They returned it to me yesterday.
So I set it all up again, left it overnight and this morning it was dead again. So now it leaves me to wonder if it's something I have plugged into it.
I have a new Seagate 3TB external hard drive hooked up using USB3.0. This is plugged directly into the back of the computer.
I also have a powered USB hub plugged into the computer which has regular USB stuff such as printer, graphics tablet and another external hard drive (this one is older LaCie 500gb, and have put it into a new USB 3.0 case as well for the arrival of the new iMac (this had an old firewire hard drive case). However this hard drive is switched off at the case and is not being used.
I believe it could possibly be the Seagate 3TB disk causing this problem, but it works fine during the day while I am using the computer, it's just when I either leave it at lunch time to go to a meeting or walk etc or overnight that I come back and it has shut down....leaving me to believe that it's due to the computer going to sleep.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Seagate drive? Today I'm conducting an experiment and heading off for lunch with both hard drives unhooked. If I come back and the computer wakes up from a click of the mouse or keyboard as it should, I will plug in one hard drive at a time and re-test. I will leave the Seagate for last, as I don't think it is the old LaCie disk (which is off).
For reference sake, I also have a NAS running off my network through Airport Extreme etc and have my old iMac hooked up to the network too, but don't believe this is the problem.
Initially I did put in some after market RAM (another 8GB) and though that might be the problem, but I removed and it still reacted the same way (plus store I bought it from again booted up fine and woke up fine at their shop after I had taken RAM out too).
Will keep this post updated with my next test (letting computer sleep without either hard drive in), but keen to hear if anyone has had any similar experiences with Seagate disks/cases and the new iMacs.
    Cheers,
    Kristin

    Hey kristinandmike,
I had a similar problem shortly after I bought my 27" iMac. Here is an excerpt from my discussion:
"As BDAqua suggested, I started the process of elimination by shutting down the externals and just leaving up one of the USB drives and using the computer until time to shut it off. After eliminating 2 of the 3 drives I figured it had to be the last one. That drive is a Seagate GoFlex Desk version that allows different bases with differing connectivity. I had previously used FW800 to connect but had switched to USB3 on the new computer. I went ahead and got a Thunderbolt to FW adaptor cable and switched this drive back to Firewire rather than USB3. So far so good."
For some reason the Seagate I was using didn't agree with the USB3 on the Mac.

  • MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.

MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.  This only happens when using the external monitor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mine does that too. The worst thing is when it goes to sleep, then wakes up and keeps running while the lid is closed and it is wrapped up in a case. I am afraid when the hot weather comes it is going to burn up. I am hoping Apple fixes it in the software or they may have a melted MBP to replace.
Then when I open the lid it is crashed running at fill tilt, pumping out heat to beat the band. I am forced to hold the button down and reboot.
I wiped my hard disk and reinstalled my OS, but it didn't help. I reversed my OS to 10.5.0 and it solved the DVI problem but still won't sleep. This post will probably be deleted by Apple, they did it a few days ago. I just don't know what to do, and I consider myself a real Apple expert. Just hoping you realize you are not the only one.

  • IPhone 4S switches to 3g when sleeping??

My iPhone 4s switches to 3g when it's sleeping. Is there anyway to stop this with out turning off 3g. It uses up my data but if I turn off 3g I won't receive picture messages?

This is normal - WiFi is disabled when sleeping to conserve the battery.  You can prevent this by leaving the phone plugged in to a charging source.
if I turn off 3g I won't receive picture messages?
MMS won't be transmitted if you disable the cell data network, not "3G".  iMessage with media can be carried by WiFi.

  • My mac mini only shows a steady power light and fan noise when powered up. No video or sound and no commumication with wired keyboard or optical mouse. Tried replacing internal battery and resetting PMU/SMC but nothing seemed to happen. Any suggestions?

My mac mini only shows a steady power light and fan noise when powered up. No video or sound and no commumication with wired keyboard or optical mouse. Tried replacing internal battery and resetting PMU/SMC but nothing seemed to happen.  Any suggestions? Many thanks! Richard

You've already done the two things I would have suggested.
If your Mini has an internal battery then I assume it's a G4. That means you've gotten a lot of good years of service from it, and it's old enough that it's certainly not covered by AppleCare anymore, and it's probably not worth spending money trying to repair it.
You should be able to tear it apart using instructions from ifixit.com to get the hard drive out, and then put the hard drive into a nice USB or FireWire enclosure (I like the ones from Other World Computing, macsales.com) so you can transfer your data to a replacement Mac.
I hope someone has another suggestion for you.

  • Fans spin during sleep

    Hello,
can anyone help? - im using the latest os and the latest firmware, but for some reason my fans spin during sleep - its been like it a while, but it never used to happen...
any clues as to how i can remedy this?
    thanks for your time
    Lee

    Hi Lee Harding-
Reduce your setup to keyboard and mouse each plugged into their own USB port on the Mac, and video connected to the monitor. Remove all internal PCI cards (if any) and unplug everything, including hubs, from the Mac.
If this works, add things back one at a time until you find the culprit. If this configuration doesn't work we will dig deeper.

  • Fan noise when I Target Disk Mode - power supply or 500 GB drive, or RAM?

I have a Revision B iMac G5 which falls squarely in the power supply replacement program and has had the power supply replaced twice. I'm wondering if my extra RAM, or larger hard drive could be to blame for the fan speeds upramping at random during normal operation, and always when I Target Disk Mode the machine. I have a Western Digital WDC WD5000KS-00MNB0
and two 1 GB RAM modules with the following spec PC3200U-30330.
Before I try to pin down the cause one by one, has anyone noticed whether there are 500 GB drives on these Macs which will not up the fan speeds? Has anyone noticed whether target disk mode on these models will not increase the fan speeds when RAM is upgraded to 2 GB?

I have the same iMac as yours. Changed the original 80 gig hdd to a 250 gig. Both drives are seagate barracudas. I also upgraded the memory to 2gigs. The fan noise was terrible.
6 months later a ram module gives up the ghost. I originally thought hard drive, so purchased a Western digital 500 gig WDC WD5000AACS-00ZUB0. (The green power series).

    Fans very quite. still waiting for the replacement ram module;
to see if extra ram will increase fan noise

  • G4 17 display blinks slightly when sleeping

I've been searching for this problem, but cannot find any documentation anywhere, my apologies if it has already been covered here.
This blink is sort of on the right side of the screen and is timed exactly to the pulsing of the LED on the front. I checked in the dark and it's still doing it with the lid closed. In a bright room it's not terribly noticeable, but in a darkened area very upsetting. It doesn't matter if the power supply is connected or not either. The screen is normal when using it and perfectly black when only the display is sleeping. But when the powerbook goes to sleep(pulsing light) there it goes again. It wakes normally from sleep as well. I would imagine this is really not doing my battery or screen any good when sleeping.
I don't think it used to do this and wish I had a firewire drive to boot on to see if it would do it from a clean OS there. Thinking of wiping the drive and starting over, but have so much stuff and software apps on here that is like a nightmare to consider.
    Any thoughts?

Well no replies as of yet, but I have made progress. In the bluetooth settings the box for these devices to wake computer was checked. If you add a device it will check this box automatically even if it is originally unchecked. Un-checking this box seems to resolve the problem. I guess this is relieving even though I did have plans to use this powerbook to run a display using bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse. Thus I guess I will have to use a wired input instead. I find this somewhat disappointing if this is the only solution, so rather then marking this problem answered I'll leave it open for now. Something for the real apple gurus to spin on .. My iMac is also running bluetooth and doesn't have this issue.

  • Very loud fan sound after sleep when Ram is upgraded.

Recently I have upgrade the Ram memory from 1Gb to 5Gb with (2x2GB) FB-DIMM DDR2 667MHz from Ondamatica. Memory works perfectly, hardware tests were OK and i didn't notice any issue except one: after sleep, fans start to spin faster and faster (seems like a vacuum) to what I supose Is the fastest speed they support, during arround a minute or 45 seconds. That generates an intense noise but happens only when awake afer sleep, not when restarting.
I've done almost everything: reset pvram, reset SMC, change memory slots... And the issue only stops when I remove the new two Ram modules.
I've read about it in some forums, but no one solved it. ¿Any suggestion before I return the Ram to the store?. Could be a software problem?.

It will or can happen but you can reduce it somewhat maybe using SmcFanControl (2.1.3.1 - wwww.macupdate.com ) to keep the fans above default by 200 rpm. And run Hardware Monitor to monitor temps as well. They may be running much warmer than they could/should/ought to.
1GB and your system was on starvation express! ouch. 4GB is more of a normal minimum even. 4 x 1GB is nice balanced setup. 2GB DIMMs might be warmer, run 70C perhaps. And they use about 15W each.

  • E530 shuts down when sleeping - fan error?

I have an E530 that seems to shut down after I ignore it for 15 or 20 minutes.  When I restart it, I get a brief "fan error" message.  It tells me that it was shut down unexpectedly, etc.  It always starts up just fine.  the computer is not running hot.  Somehow, I think this is not a real problem with the fan but something about the sleep process that is causing the fan to stop and then the computer shuts down.

Follow up - I set the timer and specifically watched the computer.  It is set to go to sleep after 45 minutes.  At 45 minutes the power light went out.  When I restarted, I got the fan error.

  • When sleeping the fans spin up to maximum

I've got a G5 here at work and when I put it to sleep, the fans turn on full blast, and stay that way until I wake it up. Any ideas?

Hi TopoTone! I'm new to the Apple Forum & have joined to glean some info about a hardware issue similar to the one you described!
Minor difference is that my G5 fails to wake up when I hit the power switch so I have to shut down! The fan maxing 1st happened once about 6 months ago for several hours then then slowed down & resumed normal condition, almost silent. Only system malfunction I've noticed recently is the desktop switching between 2 alternating images on each new startup. Also the display preferences randomly switch occasionally.
I've been unable to load Classic since the first system update after installing Tiger which is annoying but not a major issue as I run OS9.2.2 on an older G4 Power PC
I've owned this machine since January 04 & it's been rock solid since then & has only been showing signs of stress recently. I read a response to another topic which suggested gathering of dust as a possible culprit for such a problem as we are having. I can see this making sense as it would make the fan work harder. But why when the machine is sleeping?
