Fans running during sleep G4 & G5

Yes, I have searched 6 different ways to Sunday, cannot find a thread that gets close.
My issue with both my G4 & G5 powermac towers, is that sometimes during sleep, the fans run at full speed and will not wake. I have reset the the PMU? on the G4 and it's still trying to take off during sleep. Is there a common fix or repair, simple I thought.
Mike

Hi Mike, a few things that have been tied to this are...

  • Hot MacBook fan running during sleep

Our MacBook's fan is on even during sleep and the MacBook seems
very hot.  It's as though the MacBook is not going to sleep and
some processes must still be running.  Typically the only apps
running are Safari, Mail and Skype.
2.4 Ghz intel core 2 duo
    OSX 10.5.8
    2GB ram
Why is the MacBook not sleeping properly?

It is possible that the macbook is not going to sleep.  When you close the lid is the apple logo on the top still lit?
If it is then the sleep sensor is not working right. Then try this click the apple logo in the menu bar and then click sleep. In 2-3 seconds the screen should turn off and the mac will go to sleep. You can then close the lid.

  • MB Air fan runs during sleep - any reasons or solutions?

I got a new MB Air last week and love the machine.  It is running a 512 gb SSD and 8 gb ram.  On OS X 10.8.5
Only thing that baffles me is that several times I have put it to sleep and come back to find it running its fan at high speed.  This has happened both while plugged into  power and on battery.
When I open the machine up it will not come awake.  Only solution I have found is to force it to shut down.
I've done a search of the forums and have not come up with either reasons or solutions.  Anyone have any insights into this, and solutions?
    Thanks

some of the "symptoms" you describe are in an Apple support article for SMC reset; read the article first before resetting the SMC

  • MBP fan runs during sleep

    All,
I bought a MBP about a month ago. I've had one before, but never had this happen.
In 2 situations the fan appears to run when it shouldn't
    1. If I put the machine into sleep mode on battery the fan will continuously run.
    2. If I shut down the machine when it's attached to the power supply the fan will continuously run.
I want to be able to put it to sleep in or between meetings without the battery being drained by the fan.
    Thanks,
    Bill S.

    Hi all,
I don't know that if this is a software issue or a hardware thing. I recently came from an ibook G4 (OS 10.3.9) and it was so incredible fast how I can let the ibook sleep or make im wake-up again.
With the macbook pro it seems to be more complicated: when I close the lid the fan is still running at least one minute, before the LED starts to blink and is really sleeping. When I try to wake him up in this time of "downspinning" or whatever this is I have no chance to wake him up. I have to wait (at least this one minute) until the keyboard reacts again and wakes him up. I have no chance to wake him up earlier. Is this a Macbook Pro issue or a software issue??

PS: By the way: I have no istat pro installed.

  • Fans spin during sleep

    Hello,
can anyone help? - im using the latest os and the latest firmware, but for some reason my fans spin during sleep - its been like it a while, but it never used to happen...
any clues as to how i can remedy this?
    thanks for your time
    Lee

    Hi Lee Harding-
Reduce your setup to keyboard and mouse each plugged into their own USB port on the Mac, and video connected to the monitor. Remove all internal PCI cards (if any) and unplug everything, including hubs, from the Mac.
If this works, add things back one at a time until you find the culprit. If this configuration doesn't work we will dig deeper.

  • My MacBook Pro fan runs while sleeping

My MacBook Pro fan runs constantly, even while sleeping.
The problem started about 2-3 months ago, but was pretty rare. When I noticed the problem, I would restart the computer and it would stop for 1-2 weeks. More recently it has become more constant, and now it always has the fan running when it's sleeping.
Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks!

Mine too. If you're worried you might like to try a laptop cooler like one of these:

Not sure how well they'd work on a Macbook as there aren't any vents on the underside but it couldn't hurt and they're quite cheep.

  • Does the fan run in sleep mode

hi guys do you know if the fan still runs in sleep mode?

If the power light is steady, rather than slowly pulsing, only your display is asleep. If you put your Mac to sleep (slowly pulsing power light) and the fans continued to run, the display and hard drive went to sleep when your Mac entered the "doze" mode of sleep, but the power supply and fans were still on and the processor was either running or idling. Once "full" sleep occurs, the main power supply is shut down, but there is a trickle supply that gives the computer the ability to restart without rebooting.

  • Running during sleep?

Something seems to have changed and I notice now that when I open up from sleep the bottom of the computer is quite hot. Seems like it must have been running while the lid down. Only think that I have changed is adding connection to Time Capsule and also trying out a .Mac account with some synching. Could these be running even when the lid is down? The fan on more too, not surprisingly.

  • MacBook Pro running during sleep

I'm hoping someone can explain this. I closed my MacBook Pro this morning to put it to sleep and put it in the carrying bag. An hour & a half later I went to take it out. It was very hot and the fan was running. When I opened it up, I couldn't wake it up, so I powered down.
When I read the appfirewall.log in Console (most of which means nothing to me), it had been asleep until just a few minutes before I took it out. Here's what it shows at that time:

Then I noticed in the log, that last line "Deny nmblookup" kept repeating every few seconds until I shut down. (But it also appears constantly throughout the log whenever I'm connected to a network.) But when I took it out o the bag, it was not connected – no Ethernet cable, Airport is off, and the new Quickertek antenna that I just got yesterday was not connected (and I quit USBWirelessUtility).
Now, when I'm disconnected from any network, there's no activity in the log.
Can anyone explain to me (in plain English) what happened and what that nmblookup is?
    Thanks.

Not very often, but usually I just forget to put it on the charger. That's when the issue starts.
I forgot to mention that sometimes my Mac IS on the charger, and it has been charging in sleep mode for a few hours, and when I open the lid it goes into system refresh. It never shut down, well, at least I didn't shut it down, but yet it still goes into system restore mode, twice as usual. The battery is often full, or nearly so. Any ideas why?

  • Lion causes iMac fan noise during sleep mode

Ever since upgrading to Lion, my iMac's (early 2009 model) fan will randomly go into high speed mode (very loud) in the middle of the night when the iMac is in sleep mode. This seems to happen more often if I manually put the iMac into sleep rather than letting it automatically go into sleep mode as defined in the Energy Saver settings.
Anyone else experiencing this?  I posted a feedback report (http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html) so I hope Apple can fix this soon.
    Eric

    Hi Mendl,
Ok, what I discovered after running the AHT test, long version, was that the test doesn't see the actual failure I had in a new iMac. It turned out to be what I suspected all along, which was a defective temperature sensor, or more likely a factory assembly issue on that component.
They replaced my computer and now all is well.
    Thanks, for reinforcing my suspicions!
    Keep up the good work.

  • IMac 27 5k (late 2014) fan runs low speed nonstop during sleep mode

    Hi,
New to the Mac community. Had the iMac 27 5K for about a month now. I've noticed the fan in the back of the monitor runs on low the entire time it's in Sleep Mode. I need to put my ear up to the vent to hear the fan running but can definitely feel air blowing out of it even after it's been sleeping for a few hours.  It runs on low throughout the night.  The fan stops completely only when it's shut down.  Since this is my first iMac, not sure if this is normal or not?  Can anyone confirm or have the same occurrence?  Thanks for your input.

    UPDATE:
For anyone with the same issue with this model of iMac; the fan running on low when it's in sleep mode is NOT NORMAL.  I eventually brought the computer into an Apple store. They ran diagnostics and nothing. This model being so new has not had many logged issues in their database.  They were going to reinstall the OS but after I reiterated that the fan runs all throughout the night while in sleep mode they decided to exchange it for another new computer.  As an aside I noticed a large spike in my electricity bill in the month I've had the iMac hence noticing the fan ran all the time while in sleep mode.  Otherwise, I wouldn't have look into it as an issue.  I'm pleased to say that with the new computer, when I put it into sleep mode, the fan stops.  Hope this helps others who run into this problem.

  • Fans blowing full blast during sleep

My MacBook Pro (15", 1.83GHz) will turn its fan on +full blast+ whenever it sleeps. This happens immediately, and regardless of whether the lid is closed or not. The computer goes to sleep fine from the Apple menu, and the indicator light pulses (i.e., I think it is really asleep). I've let it go all night long, and the fan never seems to stop. I can get good temperature readings from all the sensors, and the RPMs on both fans look reasonable while the computer is awake. They also modulate in a normal range during use. I haven't had any other trouble with it.
Originally, this computer was salvaged. It wouldn't turn on or charge. I replaced the left I/O board (containing the DC board), and it works fine now. I can't think of what would be causing this, but I'm open to consider that I didn't plug something in correctly as I was reassembling the laptop. I also don't know what caused the original failure of the left I/O board... so I'm not ruling out weird water damage or something.
    Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Bill. It is worth bearing in mind that the "default" on most Macs if the OS thermal control routines can't be accessed, or if data from a sensor is not available, for example, is to send the fans up to maximum revs.
Usually when people experience the "full fans during sleep" situation it is because the system is actually "crashing" when sleep is attempted. In such situations , of course, the computer fails to actually "wake up" when asked to and has to be force shutdown! I gather this isn't the case with yours? It wakes up normally and the fans return to normal speed when it wakes?
If the OS isn't loaded (or isn't getting the right readings) , of course, the fans go into hyperdrive anyway (hence the flat out activity when running the Apple Hardware test and the like)
It sounds almost as if the computer is losing effective "Operating System control" and going into "hyperfan" mode accordingly when sleep is activated, but not actually crashing, and then recovering control on waking.
I presume you have tried things like wiping the drive and re-installing the OS from scratch and a PRAM reset as well as the SMC reset already mentioned?
    Cheers
    Rod

I suspect you have hardware problem with a fan sensor. Doing a software install will not help the machine needs to be taken in for service. If you run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode it should reveal the error code. If it does not then run AHT an additional 2-3 times to be sure in Extended Mode. Each pass will take about 30-60 minutes.

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. This step shouldn't be necessary, but has been advised by Apple Support in some cases, apparently as a workaround for a bug. Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences. If applicable, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your administrator login password when prompted.
Select the Power Adapter tab and uncheck the boxes marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    and
              Enable Power Nap...
if present. Then, if the computer is a MacBook, select the Battery tab and uncheck
              Enable Power Nap...
    11. Reinstall OS X.
