Fans running too fast on MBP Core II Duo

Hi there,
I'm starting a new post 'cause the older one was getting unfruitful. Let me wrap up quickly. I've got both a MBP Core Duo and a MBP Core II Duo. I had notice that the fans on my MBP Core II Duo were very noisy compared to the MBP Core Duo. So I ran smcFanControl (NO I HAVEN'T CHANGED THE SETTINGS AND NO smcFanControl ISN'T BAD FOR YOUR COMPUTER), I just used it for MONITORING PURPOSES. Ok.
I've capture both results in movies so you can see the differences. I've used a cloned system and compiled some code to give the cpu some meat. Here are some behaviors I've noticed:
http://web.mac.com/michaf/iWeb/MacBook%20Pro%20Fans/MacBook%20Pro%20Fans.html
(Just run both movies at the same time)
1) The MBP Core II Duo runs at a minimum of 2000 rpm vs 1000 for the MBP Core Duo
2) The MBO Core II Duo shoots very quickly and hangs it's fans much higher.
3) After a while the MBP Core II Duo has a temp of around 68 with fans running at 4500! The Core Duo instead at a similar temp is down to 2300!
I'm recording with my machines and it's barely usable with the fans.
Has anyone noticed the same thing or is it my machine?
Micha

The movies in your link don't appear to be working so can't comment on those.
Your post confirms what I suspect is true about C2D temps compared to CD temps, which is that the C2D is fundamentally no cooler (possibly hotter) than the CD, but Apple have doubled the fan speed in the C2D to make the C2D run cooler.
Seems to me that Apple bent over backwards to make the CD quiet, and this resulted in them running too hot, and with the C2D they have swung the other way.
I am using Fan Control 1.1 on my CD to steer a middle course. I have left it with 1000 rpm min but set it to start ramping the fan speed earlier and more steeply as temp rises. So most of the time it is quiet, and high temps which can be reached with the Apple settings are avoided.
Doesn't help your C2D problem much except to suggest that you use Fan Control 1.1 to devise settings to suit your purposes. I suggest you have Hardware Monitor on continuously (hidden) so that you see what has happened to the temp over typical working sessions using different settings in Fan Control. When you have found what works you don't need to keep Hardware Monitor active.
C2D can't need 2000 rpm the whole time!

  • Are my fans running too fast?

    Hello,
recently I got my rMBP; the basic specs, I am really happy with it, no displays issues or any wierd sounds, but when my Mac gets a bit higher load (e.g. playing Trine 2, my MBP gets around 60 degrees celsius at CPU and 65 at GPU) the fans run at around 5000 rpm, while the left fan is alway faster by about 300 rotates. Hands down, the sound is ok, but I am worried about the speed, is it normal to get such high rates? At minimal load, it is about 1900 rpm so you can't hear it all.
    Thanks for all your answers

I've seen fan speeds close to 6000rpm reported here, so I wouldn't worry. The computer is doing what it is supposed to do: increase the fan speeds as needed to keep it cool. Enjoy your new computer.

  • Fan runs too fast after SMC update

About a week ago I updated the SMC of my Macbook 7.1 (mid 2010).
I even leaved it sometime  (days or weeks) on the list of software updates without installing, as it said I should not touch until it was done and it was to fix some compatibility with hardware that I don't have. So I did it at a time I would not do anything.
Since then, the fan began to work at full speed almost permanently, sometimes it slows down to normal operation (really normal, increase rotation when the device heats up, slow down to 2k rpm when it is cold).
I have formated the HD twice, because I tought that had done something wrong, but the problem persisted, so I used the hardware diagnostics and found two error numbers, one for the fast run:
    4SNS/1/40000001:TN1D - - 110.00
And another for the extensive test:
    4SNS/1/40000001:TN1D - - 1.000
I searched these numbers but the results are not good nor precise, peaple said it's related to thermal detector or the logic board permanently damaged.
My current SMC version (after the update) is 1.60f6
I don't know the old version of SMC.
I installed iStat PRO widget, from where I can see that all thermometers are operating normally (these must be the source of the control of the fan) and the fan running at 6,200 rpm.
I even tried to install Fan Control system pref component, but it can only increase the commanded speed of the fan at any time, never decrease.
I also tried to reset SMC as said in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 , sugested in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1306035
Is there a way to roll back to the old SMC version?
Or to install some program to overwrite the wrong control?
    Thank you.

you need to bring it to an Apple store or AASP to have it properly diagnosed.  Only Apple certified technicians have access to what those diagnostic codes mean.

  • Fans running too fast-6K rpm

I noticed the fans running fast a couple days ago. There does not seem to be a reason of this—temps are low (I think): nothing is reading higher than 46°.
What might be causing this? What should I do about it? Is there a danger aside from burning out the fans?

There are a couple of other things to try:
Open Activity Monitor and see if you have an out of control process. Select "All Processes" at the top and CPU in the bottom bar. Look for something hogging the CPU. Sometimes a printer process will hang up and do this, but it could be almost anything.
Run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. It may be that a thermal sensor has failed or become unplugged, and if so, the fans are set to run all out by default.
Burning out the fans is the first danger. Burning out your computer because the fans aren't cooling it is the next danger.
    Good luck!

  • PowerMac 1,8 late 2004 fans run too fast now !

    Hello
since yesterday, all the fans of my computer are crazy.
An Apple Harwdware test give me a : main board error
I don't know how to come back with a quiet computer.
    Help me please.

    Hi David;
Before you take your computer in, you might want to open it up and see if it has very much dust in it.
I had a problem with my system a couple of weeks ago, while the fans were not going full speed, they had ramped up over what they were orginally. When I opened it everything was covered in a layer of dust. I got a can of air and proceeded to blow out the dust. Once I had cleaned out the dust my fans were back down where they had been before.

  • Why would my video clips be running too fast when played on the monitor panel?

I posted my problem earlier today, but re-reading it maybe I didn't explain myself well enough.
My main question is: "why would my video clips be running too fast when played on the monitor panel ?".  This is occuring after I have selected my media from the Tasks Panel and placed them in correct order in the Timeline/Sceneline.  I knew something was wrong when I could see that the clips were not indicating their right length when viewed in the (expanded) timeline.  They were compressed into just a few seconds, whereas the clips should have been at least 5 minutes.  I ran the clips in the monitor and sure enough they ran too fast, with a lot of jerking movements.
The 3 video clips I am trying to make into a HD PAL video were taken with my Nokia N8 mobile video camera. These are in mp4 format. Can this present a problem ?  Note that when I play these individual HD clips on my computer in (Windows Media Player) they run fine.
After I placed the clips in my Project Panel (or before in the Organize Workspace), I have perforned no change or manipulation of the clips.  They are in their original state.
Just too confirm that the clips did seem to be compressed, I burnt a DVD, the resultant video ran in a matter of seconds.
    Help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, that is what the problem was.
Although the video camera on my Nokia N8, mobile was capturing at 25fps,
for some reason once transfered over to PrE9 (via file transfer), the clip was interpreted as 500fps.  Once in Interpret Footage I was able to change the fps to 25.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Time is running too fast

    Hi there
I've got an iphone 2g, FW 3.1.3 and a very strange issue:
The clock is running too fast. After one day the time on my phone is 1 hour ahead ( 1hour/each day). When i connect and sync, the time on my phone jumps back to the normal time, the time on my macbook.
I did a total reset (came from version 3.0), but with no luck.
Ive got no option "Set time automatically" in my Firmware version.
I hope somebody has any idea what's going wrong.
    Thank you for reading anyway.
    regards

  • Why are my podcasts running too fast

my podcasts and audio books run too fast so the speech is too quick to listen to, my music seems ok - anyone experienced this problem or got suggestions for me?

Slightly below the scrubber bar the is a box with either 1/2X. 1X or 2X.  Those are the playback speeds.  Tap on the box to change/cycle through the speeds.

  • Recorded video is not natural and runs too fast.

    Hi,
I am facing one of the very strange problem with my cameras and I am not sure whether some unintentional setting is causing that.
When I record the video and try to play it the video does not look natural and runs too fast like 5 min video finishes in 3:20 minutes.
Any ideas what may cause this as until now it was working fine?
    Thanks and regards,
    Sanjay.

    - The MBP Core2 Duo is roughly 2x faster on image adjustments
    - The faster drives of the Quad and 2x CPU's showed its power in generating previews and writing to disk
    - Given notes from Aperture users with 7800GT video, I suspect the MBP Core2Duo would be as fast or maybe faster. I'd love to hear from somebody who can verify
    - Even allowing for the slower disk sub-system, the MBP Core2Duo is more than the equivalent of a portable Quad!!! Now ain't that something!

    Yeehaaa!
    Score one for the G5!!!!!
OK, updated the Quad with the X1900 G5 and consigned the 6600 to the toy box.

  • 13" MBP Core 2 Duo version

Where can I still buy a 13" MBP Core 2 Duo version?
I have read to many reviews and blog posts about heat issues in the i5 version for 13" mbps. I have a core 2 duo from 2010 and i love the quiet operation. Now I am in the market to get one for the wife.
Any pointers where I can still buy a core 2 duo version for the regular retail price?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I am aware of the refurb link. Was hoping to get a brand new version of it. The ones which are being sold on Amazon are selling at a premium which is not justified (especially for an older model).
Any other pointers/websites which could have them in stock?
    Thanks again.

  • Mac fan running too loud after update

    I have a Macbook pro 13".  (mid 2012)
    Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Storage: 500 gb
After updating to Yosemite 10.10, my macbook pro's fan is running too loud and producing a lot of heat. I reseted the SMC several times but it didn't help. Surprisingly, The fan also runs loud even if only 1 application is open.
Please advice me what should I do.
    Thank you in advance!

I have the same model and I've had the same problem for a few days. I didn't really have problems with heat, but my fan was going crazy even though I was just browsing the Internet. Maybe you're logged into iCloud and have some activity going on. What worked for me was going to:
    1. System Preferences
    2 iCloud
    3. Uncheck things like "Keychain", "Find my Mac", etc. (things you don't need/use)
For me, I unchecked everything and logged out of iCloud. After several minutes, my fan is super quiet and not acting up! Hope this helps.

  • CPU Fan running really fast even at low temperature.

I bought a HP Envy 700-160eo desktop computer 5 or 6 months ago and for the last 2 months the CPU fan has been running really fast even at low temperature. It's like locked to about 2400RPM as soon as I boot up my PC. Even if I get 30 degrees celcius it runs at 2600RPM. I've tried resetting my CMOS and tried updating my BIOS, but the BIOS update that you are providing me on the HP Envy 700-160eo driver & update section isn't compatible with my PC. The update is for 700-0xx. I've been using the program called Argus Monitor for controlling my fan speed.

I've got the opposite problem, my AMD CPU is running around 55C and the fan hardly ever exceeds 1200 rpm most of the time its running around 950rpm.  I think the 48C to 65C is running on the edge of to hot in my opinion, I like to stay around 35C-40C. Motherboard, video card and hard drive all stay in the 30C range. I tried to speed the fan up with SpeedFan program but it can not interface.
I hope someone can give us a answer, I checked the  UEFI and could not find any setting allowing controlling fan speeds on my ENVY 700-200z/AMD A10 cpu.

  • Cooling fan runs too much

I've had my MacBook for about 5 months. Recently (the past month or so) I've noticed the cooling fan running a a lot. Even if it's in a cool environment, sitting on a desktop, it will sometimes run constantly. There are only a couple of applications open and no CD/DVD in the drive. This problem is random; for instance, today it started after I restarted my machine. It's been running non-stop for a half hour now. I do regular updates, including the latest firmware update last week. Any ideas?

I'm not surprised. Last time mine did it is was a printjob that was running. I didn't try to print but something I looked at or did caused it to start.
Go back into activity monitor and high light the process. Then click the stop sign looking icon to quit that process.

  • Uncompressed 8-bit running too fast

    Hi all,
I've just been given a project in which , for some reason, the footage has been captured using two settings on two different versions of Final Cut.
The DV-Pal captured footage is fine, but there is also uncompressed 8-bit footage and this plays back too fast. It appears to be a 24fps/25fps problem - when I set it to play back at 24 it's fine.
Is there an easy way to either convert it or set it to play back at the slower speed combined with the other footage at normal speed?
    Thanks,
    Tom

You can scroll in the browers to find the frame rate of this footage.
PAL needs to be slowed down by 4%. You may want to convert PAL to NTSC in Compressor or look into the Nattress plugins to see if he has an easier solution.
