Fans stuck at 1600 RPM after 10.6.2 Update

I have a Mac Pro thats been upgraded from dual 2.0 Ghz Dual-Core Xeons to dual 1.86 Ghz Quad-Core Xeons (Xeon E5320 Overclocked to 2.33 Ghz).
I know there are a few other users out there that have done this mod, and I am wondering if any have experience any fan issues after updating to 10.6.2.
After the 10.6.0 install all is fine. Update to 10.6.2 and all fans but the power supply fan are stuck at 1600 rpms. I can move them higher, but not lower than 1600.

Be sure you've removed all of SMC fan control. Use Easy Find - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - to hunt for any remaining components.
If you are still unsuccessful then in addition to resetting the SMC/PMU try resetting the PRAM as well.
You may eventually need to reinstall SMC fan control in order to reset the fan speeds to normal levels then disable fan control and uninstall it.

  • Dual G5 cpu B fans stuck at 300 rpm

    Hello,
The intake and exhaust fans of one of the CPUs of my dual G5 (June 2004) 1.8GHz are pretty much stuck at 300 rpm (as measured by iStat Pro, and you can also clearly see and feel that they run very slowly.
The result is that the fans of cpu A rev up quite often and noisily, which is annoying. It seems to be basically the same problem as described by another post (without resolution), but with the fans of CPU B stuck at 300 rpm instead of those of CPU A: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=823143 (I can also reproduce that changing from reduced to high performance momentarily increases the speed of the CPU B fans to about 600 rpm, after which they immediately fall back to 300 rpm).
X Resource Graph and iStat Pro both show that the temperature of CPU B is the same as that of CPU A right after boot up), but afterwards remains consistently higher (45°C-51°C vs 42-48°C, or 115°F-124°F vs 107°F-118°F). So it appears that the temperature sensors work fine.
I've run the hardware test cd and it did not find any errors. During testing, the fans of both cpus revved up as expected.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jonas

    Some more things to try?
Do you have the Developer tools installed? There is a pref pane extra called processor, it allows a cpu to be turned off. It may be worth trying to see if turning off the processor has any effect on it's fan speed. If the cpu cools with no use, then you know the issue is with the controller.
    There is more info http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1141.html
I have tried both that and setting the number of cpus to 1 via the boot args. Cpu B in that case does not get as hot as otherwise, but it's not really cold either (about a constant 46°C). Apparently, the cpu isn't really shutdown by the OS if it doesn't use it, it just doesn't get any code to run.
I also wonder what the ambient air temperatures are.
Right after bootup, about 36°C for both. After a while, about 2°C less that the cpu temperature for cpu B (presumably because its fans barely blow), and still about 36°C for cpu A.
I'd be tempted to try a clean install without istat or any other sensor reading software installed, you don't know if the software itself is part of the problem. If it is bad enough you should be able to tell from sound. My understanding is that the fans run at different speeds to avoid causing vibrations.
As I've said several times in this thread already, I have both tried with a clean install of Mac OS X 10.3.4 and with a Linux live cd (which includes full support for fan control in the G5's), and the behaviour there is identical.
Another thing to try is to take out the fans and test continuity between the connector and the fan. If you have a multimeter you could test between the connector and the fan (under the round grey sticker)
The problem is obviously not with a connector, otherwise how could the FCU spin up the fans when the Apple Hardware Test is running?
The rear fans would require removing stuff that invaildates the warranty, so you should seek out instructions for that yourself.
I doubt any G5 today is still under any kind of warranty, especially any June 2004 models. I have once before disassembled it to the point that I could access the rear fans, but it was a pain without a proper tool to pop out the plastic pin fixing the metal cover over the processor heat sinks.
Afaik, there is also no service manual online that contains the information on how to take appart the June 2004 G5's, only earlier models (which don't have that plastic pin). There are some descriptions available from people who did it themselves, but the tips they gave did not really help me (I think I spent about 30 minutes prying with very small screwdrivers, half mutilating that pin in the process)..

  • 27" 2009 iMac is stuck on white screen after OS X Maverick update

27" 2009 iMac is stuck on white screen after OS X Maverick update.  How do I get past this White Screen?  I have tried to use the PRAM reset, holding down Shift,Command, R, and P after turning off computer then when I turn it on, having those pressed until I see the apple symbol.  I only hear one chime. Never get to a second chime.  Thank you.

  • Fans stuck at 2000 rpm

i received leopard earlier today and installed it, and since then the fans are stuck at 2000 rpm (+/- 5 rpm).
during normal use this is okay, cpu temperatures stay at about 52 C/125 F. but if i start any more processor intensive application (vmware fusion, civ IV, etc.) the temperature rises up sharply but the fans stay stuck at 2000 rpm. when the cpu temperatures reach 80 C/176 F i kill the app because i can't afford to burn my processors.
on 10.4.9 the fans would be running at 6000 rpm at those temperatures...
does anybody know what's going on? i'm feeling a bit panicked and don't dare properly use my mac...

wow! you are a lot braver than i am. i didn't dare let the temperatures go over 80C.
but following your example i decided to test too, and at about 82C the fans started ramping up (though slowly!) allowing the temps to reach over 87C before lowering them again to 80C at about 500 rpm.
it just seems freakily high to me, i hope the apple engineers know what they're doing.
anyway, thanks for testing this for me and solving my problem, i'm more at peace now.

  • G4 Laptop stuck on apple screen after 10.4.11 update

Laptop wont get past apple screen at start up after software update installed 10.4.11 from 10.4.10
    Any advice or suggestions?

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.

  • Macbook Pro fans stuck at 6000 RPM

    Hello,
I am using a 2006 MacBook Pro, 2GB RAM, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with a 500GB HDD that has 450 GB free.
About a month ago the left and right fan started cranking up to 6000 RPM (which is apparently max for this model) upon startup. Most discussions I've read while looking for a solution suggest resetting the SMC, which I have tried a few times to no avail. CPU and RAM usage are normal, nothing taking up tons of processing power on activity monitor and temps are around 35-40 degrees Celsius. I saw a few boards talk about a stuck print job which I checked for as well, but there was nothing. I tried downloading and using the smcFan Control app and setting the preferred fan speed to as low as possible but the app still registers speed at 6000 RPM and they have not slowed down.
Unfortunately, I bought this MBP from a used dealer (had it for a few months before this started), so I do not have the original OS disks to perform a hardware diagnostic. It came with 10.5 on it but I have since upgraded to 10.6.8
I'm not experiencing any problems with operation but the fans at this speed are extremely loud and annoying; is there anything further I can do to try to fix this? I'm a bit new to macs, is there a program that gives you more powerful fan control than the one I downloaded? How much would something like this cost to get fixed by Apple? Thank you in advance for any advice.

You likely have blocked vents inside or a hardware issue, like a failed sensors to trigger the fans at default max warp speed.
If your adapt at opening it up, you might want to take a look at these videos and get yourself a can of air spray + tube and blast out the obstructions out from the inside.

  • CPU A's intake/exhaust fan stuck at 300 RPMs

    Hi all,
As I write this post I'm waiting for iMovie 08 to shunt a project to the media browser so that iDVD can use it (oh it'll just be another 210 minutes or so). The fans in my DP 2.0 G5 are a-blowin' but imagine my surprise upon firing up Hardware Monitor:
    CPU A: Intake Fan:*300 RPM* - Exhaust Fan: *300 RPM* - Die Temp 60.5 C - Current: 28.93 A
    CPU B: Intake Fan: *2731 RPM* - Exhaust Fan: *2780 RPM* - Die Temp: 73.1 C - Current: 31.85 A
Activity monitor shows both CPUs working, unless I'm misinterpreting the info,
Once iMovie done I'll run AHT but can I assume that perhaps the sensor and/or fans are defective? Perhaps the CPU itself?
    Thanks for any guidance,

  • My iPhone 4 is stuck in recovery mode after I tried to update it, & itunes won't let me restore my phone! Help?

So after trying to update my phone to ios7, it got stuck in recovery mode. I tried plugging it into my computer and itunes, and itunes recognizes that an iphone is plugged in. TThen when I click "restore my iphone", it says on itunes that it is in the process of restoring my iphone. An apple with a loading bar would pop up on my phone and then the loading bar would fill up, and then I would get an error message on my computer saying "Could not restore iphone, Error 2117" or something along those lines. I didn't have the new itunes, so I brought my itunes up to date. Now that I have the new itunes, I tried restoring the phone again. This time, when I plug in the phone, the computer recognizes it and says that its restoring my phone, but the my iphone was still stuck on the screen for recovery mode (white usb pointing at the itunes logo). Does anyone know how I could restore my phone? :/

This reply isn't to shorty2006, that post was awhile ago. This is for everyone that updates itunes and gets an error that their phone is now in Recovery mode.
I've been researching all night and even thought about downloading several different things that were suppose to get my phone out of "Recovery" mode.  Then I thought about taking my phone to the Apple store after work tomorrow.  I then found this blog and read coltonkj's entry and tada!  I took a big breath and hit "restore".  It worked, it put me back to the page where you can select to restore the last back-up.  Shooooo!!!!

  • Ipad mini stuck in recovery mode after ios 8.1 update

i have a first generation ipad mini which usually works fine.  last night the ios update appeared in my settings and i tried to install it.
i didnt have enough space so deleted some apps and then installed.
the ipad switched on at the end but said the update failed as i didnt have enough space i needed a little more.  i deleted more apps and attempted to install again
this failed my ipad is now stuck in recovery mode, it hasn't taken itself out as apples help pages suggest after 15 minutes its been in recovery now for 15 hours
i have tried to connect to itunes as the screen is telling me to but it will not recover from there either as apparently i can't connect to apple servers my connection isnt working - i assume because others are having this problem as i a using the same pc to post this message so know my network is fine.
i need help to get out of recovery mode - itunes says my software is up to date so i may have this nightmare software already.

i originally tried to install the update using wifi and this did not work.  i think i might just chuck the thing as looking on the boards all my stuff will be lost anyway - i backed up 2 days ago but that is nowhere to be found now in itunes or the cloud kmt

  • Iphone4 stuck in recovery mode after failed attempt to update OS. how to fix?

    Hi,
I tried to update my iPhone software (after successfully backing up to iCloud, and then successfully updating iTunes software) but got a 1604 error message.  The phone is stuck in recovery mode, and all attempts to restore the phone have resulted in failure.  I keep getting the same error message.  Basically, the phone never gets past "preparing to restore."  Please help.
I am linking my iPhone 4 to a PC Windows XP Professional, with up-to-date software.  This is the third time I've tried (and failed) to update the iPhone software, though the other two times I was able to restore.  This time nothing seems to be working.  Please help!  Thanks.

Look what google found! Amazing how that works eh?

*Error 1604*: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the USB 30-pin dock-connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
    1. Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
    2. Restore and wait for error 1604.
    3. When prompted, click OK.
    4. Close and re-open iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
    5. iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    6. Try to restore again.

If your phone is in recovery mode, all data on the phone are gone.  If your messages were not previously backed up, then they are forever gone.
