Fans - What's Up???

My Mac has been working perfectly up untill today. I rarely turn it off, just let it go to sleep overnight. When I woke it up today, the fans started going like crazy! They've been running for about 20 minutes now, and won't shut down. I tried a restart, same thing. I shut down and booted back up, same thing.
Does anyone have any experience with something like this? What would be my next step?
Thanks,
JimT

Hmm... seems fairly normal - except that it runs a lot cooler than this DP2...
Based on read-outs from HM running on this Mar 04 DP2 and practical tests on this Mar 04 DP2 - 'OS X' is telling the Drive Bay fan to spin at 1000rpm which is the 'default'; high room temps will cause it to increase, but 1000 is the lowest, and usual speed.
If you are positive it is the Drive Bay fan that is making all the noise - and (whilst I have no recollection of any such suggestion) I suppose you could check this by stopping the fan momentarily with a suitably soft-but-firm object - then the sub-system "below" OS X (in firmware, I guess) is instructing it to spin fast.
The most-common cause of this is the clear plastic deflector panel not being correctly located, or the sensor reflector tape on the right-hand locating peg being damaged - but this sensor is linked also to the red LED on the logic board edge, which you state is working as it should when the air deflector is moved.
On this DP2, HM still reports 1000rpm for the Drive Bay fan when the deflector sensor is triggered, because HM reports the OS X instructions, not the 'lower level' firmware ones.
So, if it's definitely the Drive Bay fan(just left of, and close to the hard drives, behind a silver wire grille) making all the noise, and it's not being triggered by the deflector panel sensor, and you've reset the PMU/SMU, I don't know what else to suggest.
There is some mention of thermal calibration(at page 95)
- and possibly other relevant info - in the document linked-to here

Sorry, it's a bit late here now and I'll look at this again tomorrow in case there's anything obvious been missed. Good Luck.

  • Fans - What's Up???---A follow up

A few weeks ago I posted the referenced topic, and got lot's of good help and advice which I thank everyone for (and a special thanks to maclover.) If you're interested in the origingal discussion, you can find it here:

This post is just to let everyone know what happened, and maybe to console others that have similar fan problems. It seems to be kind of a hot topic!
Sometimes, you've just got to bite the bullet. In my case it turned out to be a bad logic board. For a mere $800 I'm back in business with quiet fans. It was a really tough decision to sink that much money into the repair, but a friend convinced me to when he said, "Hey, I just put $450 in brakes on a car I paid $500 for last year!"
Another kicker, turns out my hard drive has problems too. I declined the repair shops offer to replace it. I think I can handle that one. Look for some upcoming questions from me though!

  • ThinkCentre A70 (7099) case fan, what size?

    Hi,
I need to get some more air flowing through my ThinkCentre A70 (7099).
There's a place for a fan in the rear of the case below the PSU. I've measured it and I think it's either a 92MM fan or a 100MM fan but I don't want to buy the wrong size fan.
I can't find any information about it on any document from Lenovo. There is no information what so ever about a rear case fan for the ThinkCentre A70 anywhere.
    Which size is it?
    Regards
    P-H, Sweden

You might want to use a 3-pin fan with speed adapters, so you can control the amount of air flow (rather than rely on what the BIOS thinks is correct.)   I have the precurser to one of these installed with the medium speed adapter:
    http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=104&lng=en
"3 speed settings for full flexibility
Providing 1600, 1250 and 1050 rpm speed settings via the supplied Low-Noise and Ultra-Low-Noise Adapters, the NF-A9 FLX (Flexibility) can be fine-tuned for superior airflow or maximum quietness."

  • What type of fan should i buy for my MacBook?

    Hello.
I have a MacBook white 1.1  2006 Early. If i know  good this is the first MacBook.
    Core Duo 1,83 Ghz "Yonah"
    Maximal Ram  2GB of DDR2
I want to replace the fan What type of fan should i buy on e-bay with Free ships?
I Live is Hungary in Central Europe.
    Many Thanks.

I'd like to chime in and offer a differing opinion. The size factor of all SSD's don't leave much to question, but there are a couple other things that you can research and take into account.
The biggest thing to look for after the capcity you want is the connection speed. Your Macbook is last generation compatible with SATA 3.0Gbs transfer speeds, and while you can still utilize an SSD with SATA 6.0Gbs, your connection won't be able to fully utilize the full speed of such an SSD.
The upside is that SATA 3.0Gbs SSD's are selling for much less now on ebay and on Amazon since they are last generation, so you can pick one up on a budget. If money is not an issue and you'd like to spend a bit more for the latest generation SSD that you can transplant into the laptop you want to purchase after your mid 2009, a current generation SATA 6.0Gbs SSD is going to work fine and will also work great in whatever you upgrade to.

    Hi,
Is it a desktop? You don't have to buy a cooling fan from HP. Any fan what fits in can be used on a desktop. Have a look what size (such as 80x25mm) you need and search ebay for a good fan.

  • K8n neo4 platinium, any hope for a software controll of SB fan ?

    Hello there
Like some other peoples here i have a k8n neo4  platinium and think than its northbridge fan is REALLY noisy.
What is the trick with this Northbridge fan ? I have to buy a normal one that doesn't  rotate at 23235564rpm, when i already payed extra for "platinium mobo" ?   Olders mobo of that line HAD the option to change nortbridge fan rotation, newer don't, is that product improvement?
Do we even have an hope of MSI realeasing some magic bios with the an unlocked option or did their "engineers" decided than it was better to have max speed hardwired ?
Also just because i had to say it:
-Some time ago i already didnt liked when they wanted us to get new power supply (because of additional connectors) to be able to run the new proc.
-There is also this trick with CPU fan, what is the story there? they make up crappy fans , then we have to void the guarranty to put normal ones instead, and no contructor decided to sell "something" that could go in place of amd ones without getting us to void the guarranty? (am i paranoid or they WANT us to void their guarranty)
-MSI itself as well as some other vendors start to sell mobo with proprietary expension slots , with no other reason of being there than to be able to sell their third party product (it s not faster, nor easier to get working not, nor a chipset or the HW constraint of only having 3 pci slots), i mean i really don't like this kind of "marketting techniques".

MSI should offer a tradein program where you could mail in the old NB HSF, and theyd send you a better one. That would be service.
they do. just search the forums please. there are many people who sent back their fans for a less noisier replacement. however, most go with aftermarket ones.

  • HP pavilion dv6 fan not working

My HP PAVILIONDV6T-6100 laptop (Product no. LM720AV) is having problems with the cooling fan and overheating. I have started getting the cooling fan not functioning error at startup. When I use the laptop-the cooling fan runs almost all the time. It turns-off when I have only one application running on the laptop.
I understand that since the fan is running perfectly fine, the fan motor is still functional. Could it be dust accumulation that is causing the error and fan running continuously? Where can I get the insturctions for opening the cooling fan assembly and cleaning it? Also will I need to replace the thermal insulation after cleaning?
    Thanks
    Sunny

I paid $30,000 for my car but I trust the dealer to work on it because I know their mechanics do it every day. I could watch youtube videos and figure out how to do a tuneup but they will do it better. I will change my own air filter however since it is not too hard and will save money. Replacing a cooling fan is more like a tuneup than replacing an air filter. Still, you can do it if you follow the Manual and are careful. Here is the Manual:

  • Core Center: What Does it Do??

I have mine on and I have it set to run in the BIOS.  But, mine never drops is CPU speed.  Surfing the internet or reading.  It never drops.  It hovers around 2200 Mhz.  Within the panel, it is set to cool 'n quite and NOT "user."  My setting are:
    fsb: 200
    vcore: 1.55
    mem volt: 2.7
    AGP: 1.5
    avg CPU temp: 51C
CPU Fan (what came with the retail CPA box): stays mostly at above 3000 rpm's.
My understanding was that it would drop your CPU speed to 800 Mhz, but I have never seen it.
See my sig for my rig.  I have the most recent version: 1.7.3.0

  • Fans never turn off!

sometimes when the fan in my macbook kicks on, it stays on until i force the computer to shut down (when the fan is stuck on, it won't shut down...the blue screen comes up and the circle thing comes up, but it won't shut down...i have to hold down the power button). sometimes i can get it to sleep, but as soon as i wake it up, the fan kicks back on. sometimes it won't sleep at all when the fan is on.
    any thoughts?

It's my understanding that the fan IS always on when the machine is on; that's what keeps the temperature within reason. The fact that you can HEAR the fan is perhaps more of an issue. The default speed of the fan (what it's running at when it's not under load) is 1800 rpm. At that speed, unless you have pretty sharp hearing, you shouldn't really notice it unless there's something wrong with it. Under heavier loads, the fan will speed up and become louder; it is normal to hear it then.
You can download a program called smcFanControl to find out what temperature your machine is running at and how fast your fan is running. If it's significantly faster than 1800 rpm when you're not running much of anything, then you probably need to do further investigation to see if you have anything running in the background that you aren't aware of it. If it's really noisy at low fan speeds, then you might want to have Apple take a look at it and see if the fan needs to be replaced.

I downloaded and installed Speedfan and it is showing me that one of the 3 fans connected to the mortherboard is spinning at minimum RPMs.
More importantly:  What video card do you have?  Does it have a fan or is it passively cooled?  If it has a fan, what speed is that fan spinning at?
You might wanna un-dust your fans and the air inlets & outlets of your case, too.
Also, please provide full system specs: >>Posting Guide<<
I actually doubt that the fact that one of your system fans is slow suddenly causes the system to overheat.

Can someone tell me the sizes of the fans in the DS-6100?  I'd like to possibly upgrade and get better fans. I'm guessing that one on the back is an 80MM fan. How about the CPU Fan, what size is it?? Many thanks!! -- Cain

idk whats going on its extremly loud is very scary. Is there any way i can fix it my self? because i need the laptop
also if i send it to msi in calli how long will it take? for this to fix it and send it back

i do agree with darkhawk, your laptop has got an defected fan, what it sounds like is it's being pressed and that middle part of fan is forcing the fan to spin causing that sound and also wouldnt be suprised if the fan blades are scraping against metal cover above and under fan part since fans have 2 metal plates so yeah.
