FAQ hard disk clarification?

In the FAQ's storage section Harm recommends "Use at least 3 different physical disks on an editing machine, one for OS/programs, one for media and one for pagefile/scratch/renders."
So if I'm exporting my video it's best to save it to the same disk that I've designated as the Scratch disk?
I recently pulled a third 300GB 10k WD Velociraptor (put it in another system) and am replacing it with a 1TB WD Black. Just want to be clear that it's preferred to export (render) my videos to this 1TB drive and also designate this same drive as PPro's scratch disk?

Now, on my workstation, I break it down even more, but I have 8 physical HDD's. However, when I am migrating my Projects between computers, I will use my FW-800 externals in the place of the E:\ above. It is not the ultimate fastest way to do it, but when you migrate/transport, it's the best way to go.
On my workstation, I have two 1TB SATA II's, that are ONLY for my PS Scratch Disks, and are kept pretty clean. When ONLY working on that machine, I will Export to a separate physical HDD for video, and one for audio, but I have plenty. I guess that in a perfect world, one would have one RAID _0 array for media, one for video Export and one for audio Export. I am not that advanced, and also do not do HD work (that is where the media RAID would be most useful).

Your disk assignment is pretty well where I was going except for Projects which up to now I've thought of as being something that did not grow nor shrink much - like PSD files. I thought that, when rendering the final image, one disk should be reading the original footage (Assets/Projects) from Disk2, and the result (Export) would be saved on Disk3. And, yes, the OS pagefile should imo be left with the OS on Disk1.
I use hot-swapable external eSATA drives that I can plug into either of 2 bays and currently have 14 external drives, all for client files, doubled up on 2 drives each. So Disk 2 and 3 on the main computer are usually not very full as files are deleted when a job's done and they're moved to external storage.(2 HD copies + original camera files burned to DVD - stored offsite).
I do wonder why you would assign 2 separate 1TB drives for PS scratch disks? I sometimes work on files up to 2 TB in size and have never grown a scratch file much more than a few hundred GB (if that..).Though I do set my history to 2-3 when working with such large files. This is a topic for the PS forum <g>.

Hard disk not detected once, but now working?

I'm Zak, a bit of techie when it comes to playing with software, or re-assembling computers and whatnot. Unfortunately I've got no clue about some other things.
A bit of quick history on my notebook: The fan has been making terrible noises the last few weeks. Initially I thought it was some dust so I got some duster. A lot of dust came out, so that can only be good, but the noises came back after a few days. After some searching I figured the other logical explanation was probably the hard drive going bad. I'm hesitant to send it back to HP because I use it for all my university work and it would really set me back a few weeks to not have it.
So, a few days ago, I booted up my notebook to a "hard drive not detected" - or very similar - message. There were a few options, for f1-f4, they were system information, and 3 different tests (I think). I ran the tests, each one came back fine, noting that there was no OS installed, or hard disk to boot from. I rebooted because I hadn't quite seen it boot up, and wanted to see if there were any other options. Turns out, it started up fine. I restarted once more and again, it did fine.
Next, I scrambled around, backing up all my data, getting together warranty info, installing the HP Support Assistant, etc. I ran all the tests from the Support Assistant and there were no problems detected. Since then I've just been hibernating the notebook when I stop using it, and I haven't encountered any unusual trouble. It all seems fine, but my warranty expires Dec 7th of this year. Is it safe for me to assume the "hard drive not detected" error was just a single misfire? I've read a lot of threads and FAQs on it and it doesn't sound like something that just happens once and goes away. On the other hand, I've never had to use a warranty so am unsure quite how the process works, and like I said, sending it anywhere would put me back in my work.
For the sake of a full post, I have an HP G62-367DX Notebook, running on Windows 7 64-bit OS, and as far as I know there were no changes made between the error and my prior boot. If there's any other information I can provide, just let me know.

The tests from the Assistant are not as comprehensive or reliable as the full hard drive test in the BIOS....tap F10 as you power up, go in there and find the hard drive test. Run the long form test and see what is says. It is not unusual for hard drive issues to start as intermittent and gradually get more frequent. If your drive passes the long form test you can fairly safely assume it was a one-time gremlin of some sort, but it is still a real good idea to back up. I like the idea of the online backup services and I will name Carbonite only because it is well known and not as an endorsement. There are several more and an external drive is also a good idea.
You cannot put off a reboot forever; you are going to have to confront the issue at some point.

No way to free space in the internal hard disk.

There's no way to free any space in the internal hard disk. If I throw 5 giga of files in the trash and empty it, I don't find 5 more giga of avalaible space in the internal hard disk. Time Machine is not activated. Any idea to solve the problem? Sorry for my english....

Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

How do i clear space on my hard disk

I have a Macbook Pro that I bought in August of 2011. I set up a regular scheduled check for software updates, which have gone smoothly until recently. Now, every time that the box pops up saying that it is checking for new software updates, it finds the updates, but when I click to install them, I get another box that comes up and says "Your hard disk does not have enough space" "You need 3.57 GB of available space to download and install the updates. To increase available space, remove files from your startup disk, and then try again".
I don't understand how this could be true, as I do not use my computer for anything that could possibly take up so much space. Secondly, I wouldn't even know how to clear space on my hard disk...

My hard disk is full. I already moved lots of photos from other folders on the hard disk to other external hard drives, so there are a lot of question marks in Lightroom. So, are those photos still taking up room on the computer hard disk? I want to move everything I have in Lightroom off of the computer to another external hard drive, in hopes that will free up space. I watched a tutorial, and read some things about it, but I need simple instructions please.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots. Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library. Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

I understand that your hard drive is not showing up, presumably as a bootable partition. I am happy to help, but I need a bit more clarification of your problem. You mention a 0x00000116 error as well, which is normally part of a Blue Screen of Death. Does this happen regularly as well, or is that the real complaint, that you are getting the 0x code and a BLue Screen on startup?
That particular code is generally associated with a video driver problem.
Is the hard drive you are trying to install to, a new replacement hard drive or the original hard drive?
If you try to boot up the system, what error do you see?
Are there any repeating flashing LED patterns, or beeping patterns?
Assuming this is your original installed hard drive, did you try the recovery manager for the drive?

Largest hard disk on MSI KT4A Ultra (MS-6590)

MSI say the largest hard disk the KT4A Ultra (MS-6590) supports is 160GB:

Hi,
A RAID 5 array only allows for recovery in the event that just one disk at a time fails. If two disks in a RAID5 array fail at the exact same time, you need to recover data by restoring a backup.

You should have bought one with a larger SSD. You can regain some space by disabling the sleepimage file:
To disable safe sleep, run the two following commands in Terminal:
$ sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
$ sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false
When done, restart your computer. Now go delete the file "/private/var/vm/sleepimage" to free up some hard drive space. When you put your computer to sleep it, should happen in under five seconds; my MacBook now goes to sleep in two seconds.
[robg adds: To state the obvious, with safe sleep disabled, a total power loss will wipe out whatever was open on your machine. To enable safe sleep mode again, repeat the above commands, but change hibernatemode 0 on the first line to hibernatemode 3, and =false to =true on the second line. You'll then need to reboot again. Personally, I prefer the safe sleep mode, even with the slower sleep time and hard drive consumption -- even if for no other reason than it's great when changing batteries on a flight.]

New Hard Disk won't work

G4 12" powerbook original hard disk died.
Replaced with 160GB seagate momentus 5400.3 and it seems to be working ie. disc starts up is recognised by G3 iMac when connected as a firewire drive (start up + T key). Have used disk utility to format it and to mount OS from powerbook DVD but does not work.
Hardware disc checker says cannot access memory SRR1 & SRR0 with some numbers.
Is there a driver I need? If so where? or what else can I do?

i've backup my hard drive into my external hard disk using a time machine.
if, i deleted the files in my mac. will it be missing in the hard disk too?

YES! Not immediately, but sooner or later, Time Machine will delete it's copies of things that are no longer on your system. See #20 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Depending on the circumstances, the copies may be deleted in as little as 24 hours.

Backups, especially Time Machine backups, and extra space are two very different things.
Your best bet is to get a larger HD for your Mac, so you can keep all the originals there.
Second best is a another external HD; copy some things to it and delete them from your Mac, and let Time Machine back up both your internal and the new external.

50% of Hard Disk Missing

I recently inheireted a Power PC G4 running OS 10.3.9 which seems to be missing a lot of disk space.
When I check the amount of hard disk space available by using "Get Info," my Mac tells me I should have nearly 19.08 GB in total capacity. However, when I add up all the disk space used up plus the total currently available, I seem to have only 11.58 GB.
So where has all my disk space gone?

Hard disk on AEBS will not respond

Having setup the aebs with no problem I added a hard disk to the network which was ok for a short time but at random when you double click the hard disk the spinning wheel of death appears and I cannot access the disk.Then go through the palava of adding the hd again and the same happens. Any ideas ? I have latest firmware and software. The ext hard drive is iomega.
