FAQ: ZEN 2/4/8...GB Undocumented and little-known featu

The documentation for the ZEN is basic, and there are several features which are hard to ascertain before you buy, and a few that many owners still won t have discovered.
Though important to those affected, I m not concerned here with white-screens and other misbehaviour probably caused by a fault. Nor problems with recovery mode or updating firmware, both covered in other threads.
Is it possible to make this thread sticky Catherina/Dale
Here s my list so far:
I m thinking of buying a ZEN but I read somewhere that there s no dedicated volume control, and you have to find it via the menus.
The Up/Down buttons do the volume, except when you re browsing the menus, photos etc. Only then, do you need to press the Menu button to change the volume.
How do I manually tune the FM radio
Press the Play/Pause button. Instead of selecting different presets, the Left/Right buttons now move up or down the band (wrapping round at each end). When you ve found the station you want, press the Menu button and Save as Preset. Having done so, you can press Menu again to Name the Preset.
When I want to name a preset (FM radio) or a playlist, a little on-screen keyboard appears. But it insists on capitalising the first letter with the rest lower case, and doesn t allow symbols or accented letters.
Press the Menu button, and you can choose upper/lower case, accented letters and symbols.
Why does it forget the position in the track after about an hour when I shut it down
Dunno. Complete mystery. But the answer is not to press Pause before shutting down. If you shut down while still playing, it does remember. But this doesn t work if you re playing from the SDCard.
I ve ripped all my CDs and put each in its own folder. So how can I browse my collection by folders rather than by album/artist/genre etc
Tough. You can't. Use any of the many programs that allow you to apply and manage ID3 tags on MP3 files. Set the Album tag on each track to the name of the CD, and make sure the Track Number tags are set to the track numbers on the CD.
Does the ZEN support MSC (Mass Storage Class)
Yes, in as much as you can see it as a USB dri've under Windows Explorer even if you don t install the Creative software. So you can upload your MP3 s into folders, but in order to play them, you can only browse by Album/Artist/Genre/etc tags. So basically, it'ss designed as an MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) device for use with a program such as Windows Explorer, Winamp or Creative Media Player.
How do I add album art to my tracks
You can add album art to MP3 files using Mp3tag (or doubtless any of a multitude of other programs), but if you drag'n'drop them onto your ZEN with Windows Explorer, it doesn't show. This may be a bug which might be fixed in a later version of firmware (current: .2.0). It seems this is because the ZEN associates album art with the album only, not with individual tracks, and represents it by a zero-length .alb file on the ZEN. It can only be set (as far as I can tell) using Creative Media Explorer. Either: drag'n'drop a whole folder of MP3's with (the same) album art in all the MP3 files onto your ZEN; or: if your album is already on your ZEN, drag'n'drop the album art jpg file onto the album or onto the album art placeholder under Creative Media Explorer. You can get album art for current albums from Amazon amongst others.
Help! I can't get videos to work!
Join the club. You'd expect that any video which Creative Video Converter happily converted would play on the ZEN. And you'd expect it to snow at Christmas. Now you know better. Windows Movie Maker doesn't always work either.
For starters, make sure your resolution is 320x240 and your frame rate is 25 or 30f
ps.
One program that converts most things is SUPER (www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html). For the output, choose "avi (for PocketPC)".
How can I read/write the SDCard through the USB interface
Go to Memory Card and select Removable Disk.
How can I with the SDCard
Sorry, but you can't. Start another thread on the forum, and there s an infinitesimal chance Creative will eventually provide this feature. And you ll feel better for getting it off your chest.
The best use for the SDCard slot is probably for storing postage stam
ps.
But you ll also need somewhere to store the fine tweezers required to get them out again. You can't use it for making toast for your hamster, either.
Other things you can't do:
Amalgamate tracks on an SDCard into the main library, except by importing them into the internal memory.
Browse tracks by album/artist/genre etc.
Use it simply as an extension to the internal memory.
Remember which track you re on or the position in the track when you shut down.
I've got this charger - will it blow up my ZEN if I try and use it's
There are moves in the industry to standardise all those different chargers you get with mobile phones, sat navs, media players, etc etc. So if you have one with a mini-USB plug on the end, it should say 5v on it and should deli'ver at least 500mA. In which case it'll do just fine. But if you paid a lot of money for the latest 32GB ZEN, you might prefer to avoid a cheap charger of unknown origin as there is an outside chance it might not be very well regulated and could do serious damage.

I explored everywhere with the Menu key when I got my Zen this weekend and found several tidbits, such as adding the 'submenus' to the top level menu, rearranging the menus, neat things like "Look up Artist" to view other albums by the same artist, etc..
I haven't looked on the CD but so far I've found really no documentation on the operation of the player, so maybe these things are covered in a manual I haven't seen.
Must say, coming from a Zen Xtra, this player has a lot of neat little features.

    At the PC end
1 PC running windows XP (home or Pro). THIS A MUST
The AIM Standalone Application, currently at ver. 5.9 at this link. AIM (the Site) now call this version Classic and it cannot be Installed On Vista
Note: there is also Trillian which has a Pro version for $25 that can also Video and Audio chat. The Basic version just Texts and Audio Chats (AIM does not Audio chat)
Some need the aimrtc12.exe file from Here Mostly Earlier than XP or Pre Service Pack 2 XP versions of Windows
Note: It has been noted that this file is now apparently included in Windows XP after Service Pack 2 and above.
An AIM account/screen name (AOL or Netscape count as well)

For some people, using AIM on a PC, may also have to make sure their preferences (properties) are set in the AIM Buddy list, for their camera and /or Mic. (Tuning at Message 570)
This is an icon button lower right on the Buddy List marked "Prefs" (AIM 5.5). This leads to the Preferences. Drop down the list until you read Live Video. Click on this. In the new window that opens click the button that says Tuning Video and Audio. Follow the instructions in the wizard that opens up. Access in AIM 5.9 for this is in the My AIM menu at the top of the Buddy list and then Options

To start from the PC end you need to start a text chat, then select the Video icon at the bottom of the chat window.
If one of you has a camera and the other has a Mic then you will be able to chat One Way but have sound will be both ways.
To start this type of chat from the Mac end you will have to go to the menu item "Buddies" and drop down to the item "Invite to One Way Video Chat"
To start this from a PC follow the directions in the pargraph above. You may need to change the tab to the incoming Video at the back of the two to see the Video. These tabs are added when the Video chat starts and the front one normally states you do not have a camera and shows a connection to buy one.
It is also possible to chat One Way if the other person does not have a Mic: replies will have to be typed in a Text chat.
No Camera and No Mic will cause iChat to End the chat with "No Data Received for 10 Secs"
    Summary
For any sort of sound to a PC using AIM, (Talk in PC or Audio in iChat) the Mac will need a camera. The other person can have a Mic and then live chats with sound both ways and Pictures (Video) the other.
NOTE: At This Time It Is NOT Possible to Audio (sound only) between Mac & PC with AIM & iChat
Trillian Basic can Audio. Trillian Pro can Video and has a bigger picture and can do Full Screen.

  • ZEN Micro won't turn Off and now won't turn

Hi Everyone, hope you can help me out here.
I have been using my ZEN micro for about week now and it was at first working fine.
Then it started not turning off, so i had to pull out the battery.
This is obviously very annoying, but it got worse over time.
It now won't turn on unless i switch it about 30-40 times.
What is going on, is there a way to fix it and is anyone experiencing the same problem?
    Thanks very much,
    Fern

FernIe, I have the exact same problem, although now my Zen Micro won't turn on at all via the switch.
My Zen Micro is 5 months old and its only been over the past few weeks I've been having problems. It started with having to hold the switch in the power on position for a least 30 secs and trying it at least 5-0 times before the player would turn on, and having to remove the battery to turn it off. Now, not matter how many times I try the switch or how long i hold it for, the player won't turn on.
The battery is fully charged and I have never had problems with the headphone jack, and I haven't dropped it or done any damage to it that I think could be causing it. I'm having to turn it on by plugging it into my computer through the USB cable and then unlpugging it once its on, it's a pain doing this and means if I want to use it later I have to keep it on, muted, in my bag all day with the lock turned on (that end of the switch works) then once its turned off I can't turn it on again until I get near a computer again.
I've searched the discussions and knowledge base but haven't found an answer. I've just emailed the support team and I'm waiting for their response, would be interested to know what they've told you.
Just letting you know your not alone and I feel your pain!

  • Zen Sleek not avalilable in Europe and Ita

Hi i want to ask if Zen Sleek is available in Europe and expecially in Italy where i li've.
I have this doubt because i don't see it betwenn the products available in Creative European Online Stores, but only in online shop of United Kingdom.
Is it possible, that if i want to buy a 20 Gb player with radio and rec functions, i can't find a Creative product, and i have to buy from another company?

fred_be9300 wrote:good luck finding your dream player. Fred.
    Thank you fred_be9300!
I actually have a Zen Touch 40 Gb, great player, but it's a bit heavy and big, and does not have radio and rec functions.
So i was thinking to upgrade to a Zen Sleek because of the radio, a smaller and less heavy player and rec functions.
But i didn't see the Sleek in no shop of my city and didn't see on Creative online store.
    So now i've this doubt...

  • Charge a Zen v Plus from mains power and still play mu

Does anyone know if you can charge a Zen V plus from mains power and still play music?

Creative could save its Help Desk/Support people and their consumers <i>endless</i> amounts of aggravation if they simply included a Mains wall charger with every player.
How much does a charger cost at the factory level when you make thousands upon thousands of units?
As it stands now this policy forces people, many of them not very handy with computers [and by the sounds of reading this forum, not everyone in the world is running XP with Service Pack 2 and has all their computer's ducks in a row...] to troubleshoot their USB ports, hack their Registry, delete and re-install firmware and software.
A lot of that is completely over the heads of people who merely want to listen to their favourite music and simply charge their shiny new Zen DAP.
How many people give up when they can't get their Zen recognized and return it to the store, never to buy Creative again?
One it too many when the solution is so simple and inexpensi've.

Hi, Ken: Normally the recovery drive is almost full because HP creates a partition just large enough to store the recovery image on. You should get a warning message if the recovery drive is accumulating too many files (that don't belong on it). Please see the info at the link below for further guidance. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03736755

  • Have a Zen Micro (6GB) - Lost Software CD and Firmware update confuses me. Please he

I bought my Zen Micro about 7 months ago and have been using it fine until recently formatted my computer and realized I've lost my software cd (the one that comes with the player).
I tried downloading the Creative MediaSource Organizer/Player (version 3.30.2) and updating the firmware (thereby loosing all the songs I had saved in there. Ugh.) in my Zen Player and in the beginning MediaSource <i>still</i> wouldn't pick up my Creative Player. Then, I don't know why, it now works...but it works like a normal External HardDri've or a PenDi've would! It not longer has that menu thing (where there's a list of artist and albums) at the left side but simply folders under the Creative Player.
Does anyone know where I can get the old firmware and download the required software? I <i>greatly</i> prefer the way my player worked before I updated the firmware/software and I would like to just have that back even if it doesn't have as much features or whatever came with the upgrade. (iTunes or something. Has no idea what that is.)
Also, does Creative have a Service Center in Malaysia (specifically Kuala Lumpur) and can anyone tell me where it is or give me the phone number to call? I'm still under my warranty but this site doesn't list a number to call although they say they give Telephone Support until the warranty expires.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Cherish
Edit: BTW, I <i>have</i> tried emailing Customer Support but so far, no reply, and that was...2 weeks ago, I think? And, like I said, the Customer Support section in this site doesn't list any numbers/Service Centers which is why I'm asking...Message Edited by cherish90 on 02-06-200705:25 PM
Edit the second: Does anyone know if the confirmation email that Creative is supposed to send to your account after you send them an email isn't working? Because I just double checked my inbox and I realized I never got any confirmation letter. And I'm <i>very</i> sure I didn't accidentally delete it.Message Edited by cherish90 on 02-06-200707:38 PM

LOL. I've sent in my player. FINALLY found the Service Center (for those in KL who want to know, it's in Berjaya Amoda, behind Low Yat and opposite Times Square) after asking the shop I bought the player from.
And the guy who I talked to called their HQ or whatever and said that neither of the messages I sent (I sent 2; one shortly after I started this thread) were recorded/received on their end although I DID get the "Your message has been sent" page after clicking on the 'submit' button. And yeah, I used this email too. *confused* Maybe Creative doesn't work with Mozilla Firefox (the browser I'm using)? I think that's kind of lame, though, because FireFox is like practically as big as EI now and it's more user-friendly (the tabs are uber cool IMHO). Unless Creative has some sort of problem with Mozilla...
    *cough*
    ANYWAY...
Yeah, I did download the PlayForSure plugin (although I have no idea what it's for) and MediaSource STILL picked up my Micro as something like a pendri've.
Never mind, though. The guy I talked to - never got his name... - said that once you've upgraded the firmware to the latest (which is the one that needs all these weird plugins and makes the device an MTP [I THINK that's what it's called] device) you can't change the firmware back to the old one unless they send it in. So I'm sending it in. And I think they'll replace the software CD for me too, so that's all good.
    Thanks anyway, Jason.

  • Any need for conversation from big endian and little endian?

    Hi,
I am planning to migrate an Oracle 9i Database on AIX 5.3 to Oracle 11g R2 Windows 2008, and have planned to use transportable tablespace. But prior to that task is the conversation required from big endian and little endian using RMAN?

    Hi,
Check V$TRANSPORTABLE_PLATFORM, it shows the ending for each supported platform. Given the results on my 11g, I suspect that you'll have to convert the tablespaces...

My mac book pro runs very slow and little round rainbow keeps popping up

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Elements 13 will not download, when I attempt to sign in after entering my pass word the instruction block freezes up, turns white and little square blocks turn around ?

Elements 13 will not download, when I attempt to sign in after entering my pass word the instruction block freezes up, turns white and little square blocks turn around ? Nothing seems to work and yes it is the right password.

Is the internet working when you are entering your password?  In PSE12 and PSE13, you need to be online first-time when you register/activate your product.  It is made mandatory for reasons I don't know.

  • Big Endian and Little Endian formats.

How can I read numbers from file in both big and little endian formats?

Not without reading them a byte at a time and doing
bit-shifting arithmetic yourself.I was hoping I will not get that kind of answer :) Well, if that's the only way,
can you tell me what kind of format is used in Java? Big or Little endian?

  • Creative Zen Touch - Sounds from inside case and firmwear not reload

    the story:
I was sitting in my room when suddenly in the middle of a song, the music stoped, i go over to check. Nothing works, so i get a paperclip and reset it. After reset, it stays on Creative logo for 5 mins. While inside the case a sound like a motor going on, off and then a static kind of noise. I restart a third time and i get recovery screen. I do cleanup. then reboot. Then format, reboot, then firmwear deletion, reboot.
I head on over to the website and read FAQ's and such. I attempt to put the newly downloaded firmwear onto my Zen Touch. I click the file, it starts the instalation process and then says "An application is interfering with the flash program (e.g Creative file Manager)....." I would like to add, i've tried rebooting my computer, and i've turned off every single thing except for the instalation browser.
    What should i do?

I think your hard dri've has crashed. If the player itself is making a loud noise like that it's most likely the hard dri've. I'm not sure if reloading the firmware would solve this problem.
