Far-away D-link AP instead of 2 meters away Airport Extreme?

In my setup:
Airport extreme channel 1 in office
D-link AP channel 6 in garage (25 meters away from office)
My neighbours Netgear: channel 13
Both of my Acces Points have same SSID, same WPA, different channels (as above). Of course, my neighbours SSID and WEP is different.
Any mac computer chooses to connect to D-link, even in my office. Only iPads and iPhones connect without problems to airport express, and switch seamlessly from one to another. Computers have a lot of difficulties connecting to airport express. Without the D-link, 8 times to 10 there is no wifi connection, even in the office.
Airtunes however, always work. Even (and mostly) from my lan-connected imac. When i enable airport on that imac (in office), he connects to d-link. In rooms even further away from the d-link (say 35-40 meters), but within 10 meters from airport express, there is no connection.
If that is an indicator of how good wifi products are, apple has a lot of work to do on the main subject of an access point: being accessed!
This is a problem to me for 6-8 months now. I have tried really everything, going from WDS, additional time capsule (I already had before the express, but now with disabled wifi due to bad location), playing around with channels, ssid's, wpa's,...
Ofcourse, all of my software and firmware is up to date.
The airport express is 802.11n
The time capsule is first generation
The d-link is 'extreme-G'
The macbook having trouble connecting to AE is a pro intel dual core 3 years old, osx lion
A second macbook having trouble connecting to AE is the white unibody intel dual core 2-3 years old, osx snow leopard
The imac having trouble connecting to AE is a 17" G5, 5-6 years old, osx leopard.
I don't think there is a solution for the problem, I rather think airport express is just meant for airtunes and printer sharing. The access point capabilities are just bad.
But hey, Apple, as I have a lot of your products: Proof yourself!

First of all, you're mixing D-link and Apple devices on your network. It's not that this doesn't work, but it means you can't count oun how things are going to work.  You also don't say if all of the devices are using the same wifi protocol? 802.11 a/b/g or n??
Depending on the design, setup, and capability of the wireless client, it's going to go thru a certain routine to try and select the 'BEST' wifi signal and transfer rate. Older devices that are not up the -n standard won't connect to to a wireless access point that doesn't support it, or isn't backwards compatible.  Then, downselecting to the older protocol may result in it finding a stronger signal from the device of a different manufacturer that is actually further away.
I have personally mixed d-link hardware with apple hardware and had to spend a lot of times with channel and mode settings to get things working the way I wanted.  When I was finally able to switch to an all Apple device network (4 extreme's and 3 expresses) things were a whole lot easier to setup and configure and only then, did things behave the way I exepected, with the clients picking up the strongest signal and then moving from room to room and switching to the strongest signal in the room at the time.
You're mixing wifi clients of different ages, with different 802.11 capabiliies with wifi devices from differen manufacturers, it's possible to do, but NOT EASY. Don't blame apple it's really not their fault.

  • I have linked my seagate hard drive to my airport extreme but can not seem to find it in finder any ideas

    Hi Help Please
i have just linked an external hard drive to my airport extreme but it does not seem to appear in finder under shared !!!! any ideas

i have plugged the hard drive into a usb router which in turn is plugged to to the AEBS it is visible in airport utility but then can not find it anywhere else!!
First, the drive must be formatted correctly to work at the USB port of the AEBS. That means a format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. NTFS will not work.
You need to have a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply
Next, you may not have configured the Finder Preferences to display a connected hard drive. Please follow these steps:
o Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen
o Click Finder, then click Preferences
    o Click the General tab
o Under the heading of "Show these itmes on the desktop", make sure you have a check mark next to Connected Servers
Restart both the AirPort Extreme and your Mac
Open Finder and check under the SHARED heading for your AirPort Extreme icon
Click on your AirPort Extreme and a folder will appear in the window to the right representing your hard drive
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop
Hopefully, you are not planning to try to backup files using the Time Machine application, as this is not supported by Apple.

  • Why does 2 Airport Expresses connects to one another instead of connecting to the primary Airport Extreme For internet Connectivity ?

I have Netgear DG834G router only for dsl connectivity wifi connectivity to that router is off. i have connected netgear that provides adsl connectivity to the  (Shakeel's Airport Extreme) Airport Extreme dual band Wireless N 5th generation via cat 5 cable so airport extreme is the main wifi device through which i get wifi signals at my home. now our house is big and i have installed the adsl netgear modem and airport extreme router at the same place in my room in the upper story but the signals are weak even in the upper story at the other end of the house so i have installed the new airport express dual band wireless N in the upper story (Kafeel's airport express) and it is connected to the primary airport extreme  (Shakeel's Airport Extreme) wireless router in range extention mode it repeats the same ssid. Our ground floor has another airport express dual band wireless N the new one ( Lounge's airport express) signal was weak there so i installed another airport express (Lounge's Airport Express) their and configured it to extend the range of primary router airport extreme  (Shakeel's Airport Extreme) in the upperstory with the same ssid. Now the problem i am facing that sometimes lounge's airport express connects to kafeel's airport express instead of connecting to the airport extreme and the signals in lounge are weak because all the devices are connected to kafeels airport express and does not connect to lounge air port express. but when lounge airport express is connected to primary router airport extreme then everything works fine devices connect to lounge airport express and signals are full. i have took pictures of the problem i am facing you will understand better by having a look at it. In normal working setup both the airport expresses are connected to airport extreme which is shown in this picture
The second picture shows when lounge airport express is connected to kafeels airport express and not the airport extreme (Shakeel's Airport Extreme) this is the problem.
isnt there a way to correct this so that they dont connect with each other and connect to the airport extreme ?

Lounge's AirPort Express must be located signficantly closer to Shakeel's AirPort Extreme than it is to Kafeel's AirPort Express, and there must be fewer obstructions in the signal path than the other possible connection.
The reason is that if you want Lounge's AirPort Express to connect to Shakeel's AirPort Extreme, it must receive a significantly stronger wireless signal from Shakeel's AirPort Extreme than it does from Kafeel's AirPort Express.

  • Extended network with 2 Airport Expresses, Mac connects to the far away one

I have two Airport Express 802.11n units that are set up as an extended wireless network. This is not done using WDS, but instead using the "Extend wireless network" option on the 2nd Express. I do this to get extended coverage in my apartment.
Most of the time this works flawlessly. However, sometimes my Mac connects to the wrong Express (e.g. the one that's further away). I notice this because I don't have full bars on my Mac's wifi icon. When I go into the Airport Utility, choose the far away Express, go to the Advanced tab and click "Logs and statistics", I can confirm that my Mac is in fact connected to the far away Express.
If I disconnect and reconnect my Mac from the network, it will most likely then connect the closer Express and my signal will vastly improve. I can confirm that it is connected to the right Express using the Airport Utility.
Does anyone know why this happens, and is there a way to force my Mac to connect to the closer Express?

Hello nonnynz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does anyone know why this happens, and is there a way to force my Mac to connect to the closer Express?
It would be quite logical to assume that the algorithms Apple employs to connect to a wireless router would connect your Mac to the closest (or one with the strongest signal) but it doesn't always work out that way. Furthermore, Apple hasn't released the specifics on how this algorithm is supposed to work so it may be a bit difficult to answer your question with any facts to support it.
... and no, as far as I know, there isn't a sure-fire way to force your Mac to pick the desired base station. Something that comes to mind is to change the Multicast Rate, under Wireless Options in the AirPort Utility, to a higher value for the base station that you don't want your Mac to connect to first ... but this may only be of value if you keep your Mac near the other station and would cause the opposite effect when you move to the one you just adjusted.

So my brother is using my e-mail address and number for iMessage on his iPad and i do not want that but he is far away, is it possible to remove a device from using my e-mail address from my macbook ?

    Hi ShantellePhilips,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your brother's iPad is using your Apple ID and phone number, and you want to remove this association, you can reset your Apple ID password. See this link for more information:

  • How do I go directly from one frame to another particular frame which is far away in the time line? (e.g the two frames are separated by 100 frames)

How do I go directly from one frame to another particular frame which is far away in the time line? (e.g the two frames are separated by 100 frames). I mean, is it possible to take the playhead from one frame to another frame directly which is 100 frames away in the time line? Thanks for any reply.

In the Timeline, go to the first frame and press M to put a marker on it. Go to the other frame you want to jump to and put a marker on that one too.
Now press Ctrl+Semicolon to go to the previous marker - or Ctrl+Comma to go to the next marker.

  • Want Time Capsule far away from my modem. How to add to existing Airport?

    Hi,
I have a dome-shaped Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) connected to a Comcast modem. I want to leave it as it is, but I would like my Time Capsule (TC), to be located far away from the modem, to "join" or "extend" that AEBS network.
I had it set up that way at one point, but then switched out the TC drive to a new 2 TB and then connected it directly through Ethernet to my two MacBooks to back them up more quickly. (FYI, I upgrade MB drives a lot and they aren't always recognized immediately by the TC, sometimes have to delete a sparsebundle and start a new backup--why I have to do that for it to work sometimes, no idea). But after backing up my new MB drives over Ethernet, I can't now for the life of me seem to get both the AEBS and TC onto one AEBS network. My Airport Express joins the AEBS just fine to play music, but not the TC anymore. It only gives me the "extend" option and then tells me that my AEBS "cannot be extended."
My dome-shaped AEBS lists version 5.7 and was WEP 128 secured, but I tried WPA2 Personal most recently as the TC didn't list a WEP 128 option in Airport Utility. The TC lists version 7.4.2. I have the AEBS set to b/g and the TC to its full range.
I know how to use my Mac pretty well, but I only mess with setting up Airports or TCs once a year at the most. I don't know how all of the moving parts work or work together. Various dialogue boxes will confuse the ** out of me. YET when setting up the TC originally somehow there was an option to have the TC "join" the AEBS network, not sure if since updates have removed that ability. Only since replacing the drive and turning off the TCs wireless settings to make it work over Ethernet, has the TC no longer been willing to join the AEBS.
I don't want to be a networking master, I just want to be able to configure my network quickly and easily so my less valuable (to me) AEBS will be in my living room with my modem while my entire electronic life is backed up safely in the attic to my TC that stay out of sight from thieves, etc. You'd think Apple would have built-in this ability MUCH more easily than they have! What's the point of having your only backup sitting right in the living room in the middle of all products you're backing up? If your laptops are valuable enough to steal, so is the shiny white Apple box underneath your TV. And then you have no data, no photos, no memories.
OK, done editorializing. Anyone know how to walk me through getting this BACKWARDS TC/Airport setup running? And anyone know how I could then revert to Ethernet if I want a faster connected backup sometime and then jump right back to my BACKWARDS wireless setup? Tremendously grateful for any help!

My Airport Express joins the AEBS just fine to play music, but not the TC anymore. It only gives me the "extend" option and then tells me that my AEBS "cannot be extended."
When configuring the TC with the AirPort Utility, you just need to hold down the Option key before making the selection in order to get access to the "Join a wireless network" choice.
First off, WEP is no longer considered secure, so it is highly recommended that you use either WPA or WPA2 for security. However, if you must use WEP, you would have to change the Radio Mode on the TC to one of the non-"n" choices in order to configure it for WEP 64- or 128-bit.
YET when setting up the TC originally somehow there was an option to have the TC "join" the AEBS network, not sure if since updates have removed that ability.
Again, holding down the Option key will provide this option. It was not removed with any of the firmware updates.

  • I need to get a new wifi card for my mac air. do i have to buy this from a apple store? i live fare away from an apple store.

I spilled some red wine on my keyboard and i cannot connect to the internet any more. it says on the internet icon: Wi-fi: no harware installes. so i guess i need to get a new wifi card for my mac air. do i have to buy this from a apple store? i live fare away from an apple store. Also, I do have a macbook with software system:
System Version:          Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549). can I take out the wifi card from that mack and use that one for my mac air?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Consider yourself lucky that your MacBook is still working. Now, turn it off. Wine may have damaged other parts of your computer.
Then, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. It will be a very expensive repair, as it's not covered by warranty and the logic board has to be replaced. In some cases, it may be better to get a new MacBook.
If you can't take it to an Apple Store, contact with Apple > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

I shot a video using my iPad 2, and it is too far away from the subject. How do I zoom in and save the whole video like that? Thanks!

Sorry to be such a moron with this, but I just don't have much experience with this iPad.  I have had it for over a year and I just keep adding stuff to it and it has worked great.  Now that the memory is used up, I am trying to figure out how to free up space and not lose what I have paid for.
So, Step 1 is complete, as I have "Transferred" all of the purchases.
What is Step 2?  I unchecked the concert on the iTunes library, did a sync, but it's still on my iPad.
    Thanks again for the help!!!

  • Problem with far away titles

I have set up the far away titles with a photo background, the only problem is that the colour I set for the text are all washed out. If I set the text to black, then it does not appear at all.
I just want the text to appear clear and readable in front of the photo.
    Any suggestions??

What color are you using and what color is the background photo?

  • IMovie 13 how do I change the speed of the Far Far Away title scrolling?

How do I change the scrolling speed of the Far Far Away wording?
    Thanks in advance!!

Thanks. I did try this and it slowed the scroll down. There is still a residual problem which is there is a certain amount of blank screen at the end. I thought slowing the scroll would fill this dead spot. By lengthening the duration of the title, the scroll is now slower, but the black screen has also lengthened. The current dead time is now the final 6 seconds of a 25 second title. Any help on cutting out the dead scrren time. If this were a straight video clip I would simply trim it away. Any way to get the scrolling text to fill more than 80% of the title duration?

  • How far away form...

How far away from a metal object (radiator) does the AE have to be to stop interference.

It is a line-of-sight issue (no interfering object on a line between the two), not a proximity issue. Raise the AE up above the radiator and the interference should disappear. As soon as I moved it to a receptacle that wasn't directly behind a cast tub, voila!

  • Imovie 9 "far far away "video artifacts on render

Trying to a 30 second clip in iMovie 9.0.9 using the Stars background and "far far away" text fx. I can add the text no problem but when it renders, I am getting a whole bunch of video artifacts. After I render, the same artifacts show up in iMovie in the preview pane. They never actually show uo until I render. Any thoughts? This is on a macbook air (original) but I have tried it on different systems with the same result. The text is short phases (for grade 1) all center justified. Looks like a bug in the far far away script.

In iMovie 10, when I place the far far away title on top of an image that is displayed let's say 18 seconds. Than my text scrolls in the first 6 seconds, even though I configured the far far away title lenght to 18s. How do I solve the speed of scrolling?
    Thanks in advance
