Farcical interactions between reader & acrobat for wet signatures

Apologies for the flamebait style subject, but im incredibly frustrated with adobe's products.
I have a PDF which requires a signature, it is a secure PDF, but permissions allow for signatures (in this case opting for 'wet' from an image).
If I open the PDF in reader, it will let me paste in the signatures and add the dates.  Looks good.  However the only way to 'save' is to use EchoSign.  Attempted to use that and it is horribly broken.  Maybe the PDF itself is incorrectly configured, but when using EchoSign, the signature is added to the very bottom of the document in none of the editable fields.
The other option to save is to use Acrobat.
I've downloaded the latest acrobat (11.0, Win7, x64 - trial) - open the PDF - and the sidebar for sign actions is greyed out.
This is what's annoying - I open this file in Reader - that sidebar is active, allows me to paste in the signatures, but does not allow me to save.  To save it tells me to get Acrobat.
I get Acrobat, and for the same file it does not allow me to enter the signatures.
I appreciate there may be some issue in how the PDF fields were created, however what i've descibed above is a horrible user experience, and unfairly or not, reinforces my low opinion of adobe's PDF suite of products.  How you can have one tool disable a feature, point to another tool, and that other tool not offer the described functionality is infuriating.
At this stage i'm unclear what the resolution is.  It most likely is to print & scan, something EchoSIgn should do and fails at in this case.  Going the PDF modification route has been a failure.  I have no control over the original PDF, so I cannot modify & regenerate that.
If there are any resolution steps would be interested in exploring.  I could alternatively file a bug report.

you cannot use EchoSign signature in a protected PDF. (Version 10 has a bug letting you add signatures and text, but they'll clear as soon as you send via Echosign, version 11 has the correct behaviour in graying out the EchoSign options for protected PDFs)
In short EchoSign signatures involves changing the document which the protection does not allow for.
You can still sign using a digital certificate assuming there is a signature field on the PDF.
You can still try signing using Echosign but you need to go via the echosign website. (I'm assuming this is a regular PDF you have and not a dynamic XFA form)

I've pretty much confirmed that the interactivity between Word/Acrobat Mac vs. Word/Acrobat PC is completely hosed in certain situations...Please tell me I am wrong!
Situation: two workgroups need to work with each other sharing and editing word and pdf files for complex documents containing a TOC, list of figures, etc.
Problems reproducible on many machine types and configs:
    1. WORD FILES: TOCs do not retain hot links within a doc that has been touched by a mac, and then re-saved as a PDF with the intent to have a linked TOC with chapter heads.
    2. PDF FILES: that have been touched by a mac, for example to edit the document properties, will loose all TOC function as in problem #1 above.
In short, this rots for mac users who have to share/edit these files with PC brethren.
The only solution that I found for mac users is this:
Do your thing in Word 2008. Then have a PC version of Word and PC version of acrobat installed on a virtual drive like Parallels or VMWare, etc. Delete your TOC using MS Word for Windows, reinsert a new one, and then use the PC distiller installed into word by Acrobat Professional to create a new PDF that will be cross-platform functional.
I had a meeting with the Mac users to explain this work around and they looked at me like I was crazy, and they pretty much said go pound sand, we don't care if the TOCs are linked or not.
Well, I may be exaggerating there a bit, but NO ONE was happy with this solution, including myself. Our BIG question is "Is anyone going to fix this problem in the shortterm?!?" And it's Microsoft and Adobe both that seem to have some responsibility here...with an emphasis on Adobe, as it's clearly not just an MS isssue, as you can totally destroy a working TOC in a PDF file by just editing the file properties on a mac. Arg...
I also find it frustrating that Adobe does not have a forum for cross-platform specific issues, which to me seems consipiritory. Ha!

  • Conflict between Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader and how I fixed it

For the past 5 years, I have owned Adobe Acrobat version 9, and recently installed Adobe Reader as well (version 10.7). I was previously able to set up Firefox to use Acrobat to display PDF files in the browser without downloading them, but I recently noticed that this was no longer the case. Instead, every PDF file I tried to view was being downloaded instead. I came here to find a solution, and discovered that many other people are having similar problems. I followed the instructions given here (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/view-pdf-files-firefox-without-downloading-them), but found that they were actually UNhelpful. They tell you to turn off the Firefox PDF viewer by editing about:config to disable the file pdfs.js, which is the native Firefox PDF viewer-- but that will cause the PDF file type to disappear from the Tools/Options dialog, so you can't assign it to another program (whether Adobe or anything else). This makes it impossible to assign the Adobe plugin to open PDF files. I did figure out a solution on my own, and wanted to post it here to help other users with the same problem.
I ultimately learned, through trial and error and a lot of research both here and on Adobe's website, that the root cause of my problem was a conflict in Firefox between Acrobat and Reader. I was able to solve it by upgrading Acrobat, getting rid of Reader and enabling the Firefox PDF viewer so that I could assign the PDF file type to the Acrobat plugin within Firefox. Here are the details of my problem and how I solved it:
    1. Acrobat and Reader conflict with each other in Firefox, but this isn't totally Firefox's fault. It's mostly Adobe's fault, and they pretty much admit it. Specifically, they say that Acrobat and Reader can't coexist on the same machine unless both are version 10 or higher. They tell you to upgrade to solve the problem--but I can't afford to pay for a new version of Acrobat. If you have to keep Acrobat 9.x, Adobe says the lowest version of Reader that will work with it is Reader 11. I couldn't upgrade to this because I have Vista, and Adobe hasn't issued Reader 11 for Vista (and doesn't plan to). I did cheat and download the Win 7 version of Reader 11, but it didn't help.
    2. If you have both Acrobat and Reader, you can choose a setting in Reader to make it the default PDF handler--but Firefox ignores this information and defaults to Acrobat no matter what. (This is the part we can blame Firefox for.) If you have a version of Acrobat which is below 9.5.5, Firefox actually blocks it as a security risk, so the plugin won't work at all, regardless of version number. That's why PDFs are being downloaded through your standalone program instead of being displayed in the browser. If you want to view PDFs in Firefox and keep Acrobat on your computer, you MUST upgrade Acrobat to version 9.5.5 or above.
    3. Unless you can upgrade Acrobat to at least 10.x, GET RID OF READER. As long as you can access Acrobat 9.5.5, it will work fine in Firefox and there's no need for Reader. I never used to have Reader myself, only Acrobat, but it must have been downloaded automatically when Acrobat was blocked by Firefox (which I didn't even realize).
    4. IF YOU NEED TO UPGRADE ACROBAT 9.X TO 9.5.5, YOUR LAST CHANCE IS TODAY--6/26/13. Adobe has announced that today is the "end of life" for the Acrobat 9.x platform, and all support and upgrades will cease after today.
When I searched for updates by going to Adobe's website, it told me there were none available--but when I checked for them FROM THE ACROBAT PROGRAM ITSELF (Help/Check for updates), I was offered a 300 MB upgrade that took me all the way from version 9.0 to 9.5.5 in one step. (It did take a very long time to download and install.)
    5. Once you have Acrobat 9.5.5, this is how to enable it in Firefox:
    a. INSIDE ACROBAT, set your preference for "Internet" to "view PDF files in browser." Close Acrobat. Close Firefox if it's already open.
    b. Reopen Firefox. Check Tools/Add-Ons/Plugins to make sure the Acrobat plugin is there. Enable it if disabled. Close Firefox.
If the plugin isn't there at all, repair your Acrobat installation through Control Panel. Then return to Firefox and enable it. Close Firefox.
    c. Reopen Firefox again. Go to Tools/Options and check the list of file types. For the names that contain "Adobe" and "Acrobat," Acrobat should be set as the default program to open them. Select it from the drop-down list if it's not. Continue to scroll through the alphabetical list--you should see another entry called Portable Document Format. If it's there, the default will be "preview in Firefox." You should be able to change this to "Acrobat (in Firefox)" using the drop-down menu. Do NOT pick the option that says "Acrobat"--this is the standalone program and will cause your PDFs to be downloaded.
If you don't see "Acrobat (in Firefox)" as an option, this means your plugin is not working. Go back and fix it using the instructions above (including repair of Acrobat if necessary).
    d. If you don't see a file type for "Portable Document Format" at all, that means the Firefox PDF viewer is disabled. You must enable it by editing the about:config file. To see it, type about:config in the Firefox address bar. You will get a warning message--just click OK and keep going.
This file is a long list of statements in alphabetical order. LOOK FOR A STATEMENT THAT SAYS "pdfjs.disabled" with a Boolean value of "true." Select this statement and right-click. A context menu will offer you choices including "Toggle." Select that one, which will change the Boolean value to "false." Exit about:config. Close Firefox.
    e. Now return to Tools/Options, scroll through the list of file types, and you should see "Portable Document Format." Select "Acrobat (in Firefox)" as in the instructions above. Close Firefox.
    f. The first time you try to open a PDF file in Firefox, you may get a dialog box which offers you choices of how to open the file. The first will be Acrobat, but DON'T CHOOSE THAT--it will cause your PDF to download. Instead, go to the choice that says "Open as application/pdf." You don't need to change the program that opens this file type, because your settings are already correct. Your PDF should open in the browser, with the full-featured Acrobat menu (including the option of editing or saving the file).
I hope other users can benefit from the truly painful experience I had figuring all of this out. Good luck.

    Hi Amanda ,
Which version of Acrobat are you using?
Which signature style are you talking about?
You can go ahead and try uninstalling and reinstalling it and see if that works for you .

  • Conflict between Reader 9 and (Old!) Acrobat 6.0.6 Standard?

I have an old XP SP3 computer that came with Acrobat 6 Standard, which I want to keep for printing documents to PDF.  (I'm not willing to purchase a new version of Acrobat for this old machine.)  It no longer works, however, as an add-on to Internet Explorer 8, at least not with my latest security software, and it's probably not secure online anyhow.  Therefore I want to install the latest version of Acrobat Reader on the same machine.  I tried this with Adobe Reader 9, but it appeared to damage some part of Acrobat 6, resulting in error messages whenever I started the latter; so I uninstalled Reader 9 and re-installed/updated Acrobat 6, which is now working again,  Question:
Is there a way to install some reasonably current (and secure) version of Acrobat Reader without harming my installation of Acrobat 6?  Thanks in advance for any suggestions. -- JClarkW

OK, here's where I am now.  Where did I go wrong?
    Before installing Reader:
In Acrobat 6.0.6, turned off all Internet, Web, and Update preferences.
In Internet Explorer 8, disabled all four Adobe add-ons (Adobe PDF, AcroIEToolbarHelper Class, another Adobe PDF, and AcroIEHlprObjClass, all dated from 2003).
In MSConfig, found no startup objects to uncheck except AcroTray.exe, which I left alone as instructed.
Installed Adobe Reader 8.2.0 (which is apparently still supported) and allowed it to update to the current version, 8.2.5:
Only prefernence change in reader was to use only certified plug-ins.  In particular, "Display PDF in browser" is still checked.
Made sure that Reader 8 was the default program for PDFs, and indeed, Reader 8 opens whenever I double-click a PDF.
In Internet Explorer 8, re-enabled the four Adobe add-ons listed above.  NOTE that they all still have the 2003 date!
    Results:
Acrobat 6 still works fine this time around, in that I can start it without errors, open PDF files in it, and print to it successfully from, say, MSWord.  Threfore, I did not go back and re-check MSConfig.
In Internet Explorer 8, however, double-clicking a link to a PDF does NOT open the PDF in the browser (or elsewhere).  Instead it offers me the usual Microsoft options of Run or Save.  Choosing Run opens Reader 8 in a new window.  Evidently the browser add-on is not working properly.  Although this is workable, it is not ideal.
Any ideas how to update the browser add-ons to work as they should? -- JClarkW

  • Acrobat Reader DC for Android &Javascripts in form cells

Acrobat Reader DC for Android is not taking in consideration most of the Javascripts in form cells ( scripts were all produced in Acrobat XI) Worked fine in Reader 11.7.2 pre-DC for Android... Do you have any suggestions? he issue seems to be fairly general, since only my most simple script for adding times together is working, none of the others, no matter what they do...
Sample already provided in one of my prev. posts, although the issue was different.

now I tried to run this on a Galaxy s6 Android 5.02, Acrobat DC fails, and
at the same time, on the same phone Acrobat 11.7.2 (pre DC) succeeds. This

  • Is Adobe reader touch for windows 8 support interactive PDF files with multi media contents like SWF

I have many PDF files with SWF content i try Adobe reader X but it is slow, so i try Adobe reader touch for windows 8 but the SWF doesn't work.

The full featured Reader for Windows 8 is Reader XI.
Reader Touch works in all Windows 8 systems BUT it is intended mainly for use in mobile tablets - I see no particular reason to use it unless you can'r run Reader XI. Given it is mainly for use on mobile that can't use Flash, we aren't likely to ever see the development team spending their time on this.
If you want the latest and greatest - at least try Reader XI, not X! (Flash is a separate download, it will prompt).

  • How to link Interactive fields in acrobat 9Pro

Hi Im new in this and I would like to now how to link interactive fields in acrobat.
lets say that I have 10 files (File1, File2, File3 etc......) and each file have the same  COMBO BOX that display 5 options (option 1. option 2, option 3, option 4 and option 5), all 10 files have the same combo box with the same options, but i want to DELETE option 3 from each file.
So, how can I do it, beacuse right now I have to do it manually each file at the time, and in real I dont have 10 files I have 500.
Please I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

I am not so sure yet but in the PLD properties window on general tab of SBO 2005A there is field name link to. its description is :
Creates a link between several fields, to determine if the system collectively displays or hides them. If a field is blank or hidden, its linked fields are not printed either.
To create the link, choose the Unique ID of the field to which you want to link the selected field.
If the field Total Liable in the document is set to zero there is no need to print the Tax, Discount, and Total fields. It is possible to link these fields to the field Total Liable by selecting its unique ID in the field Link to, found in each one of their Properties windows. This will then hide the fields when Total Liable is zero.
If a linked field is not yet calculated, the field is ignored.
    Another example:
    Steps for Version 2005A:
Link every existing field in the Repetitive Area
to itself (thisinlcudes hidden fields as well!)
add the following fields to the Repetitive Area
    Field_1:

    Content/Variable Tab
    Variable No.: 157
    Field_2:

    untick visible
    Left = 0 / Width = 0 / Top = 0 / Height = 0
    Content Tab
    Source Type: Formula

Increasethe Height of the Repetitive Area to allow placing the following field vertically below the exisiting fields of the Repetitive Area - tick Height Adjustment for the Area!
    Field_3:
    General Tab
    Link to: Field_2

  • Sign Document Dialog for handwritten signature

    Hi,
We are a company that provides security solutions for the IT market.
One of our products performs signature recognition.
At first we would like to call our interactive dll.
The dll outputs a BMP file with a changing name (for each signature)
and can require that the BMP will be generated providing that the
signature is authenticated. We need to automatically attach the
signature to a SigField/SigAnnot. When the user clicks a signature
field we need to call our DLL and if the BMP is generated then we
have to load it to the SigField. To the best of my knowledge this a
difficult task that involves the implementation of DSNewSigDataProc
    or DSNewSigDataWithParamsProc, DSCommitSignProc, DSFinishSignProc,
and DSFreeSigDataProc. We tried to use PubSec instead of DigSig as
recommended without success. The problem with DigSig is that there
are no code samples available from which we can get a reasonable
jumpstart and practically learn how to use functions like
    DSNewSigDataWithParamsProc or DSNewSigDataProc.
There was a very good sample in Adobe Acrobat 5.0 sdk but now it is
impossible to get the Acrobat 5.0 SDK.
We tried to understand how to replace the "Sign Document" dialog
    using the Doc
    Please advise.

    Dear "lrosenth",
We will try the Acrobat Developers program as suggested.
    We already have a RIKLA.

  • How can I interact between two different frames in the same indesign template as well as from one template to another.

I am looking for the best way (or any way) to interact between two different frames in the same indesign template as well as from one template to another. It's for a DPS app which needs to carry some button initiated data from one page to another and then present it in a table.

There is no simple way to do it, as itunes wont let you use it on another computer without wiping the contents first.
    However if you really want to transfer songs to another computer then you could try this;
    * make sure that your ipod is accessible as a disk drive (ipod options)
    * when you plug your ipod into the computer you want to transfer to make sure you select "no" or "cancel" when it asks to wipe the contents. Leave the ipod connected and quit from itunes.
    * go to "my computer" and access the ipod directly. You probably have to select "view hidden files" from windows. You will see a lot of folders with odd names like ZX838aff with similar named files inside.
    * copy these files to a folder on your computers hardrive. Now remove the ipod and start itunes.
    * import the files from the folder you made in the last step.
    * Now your music is on itunes, but with unrecogisable names.
This is the only way I have found to do it, but there may be another way, say with an application to do the hard work for you.

  • How do I interact between stage and classes?

    Hi,
I have asked this question before, and all I got is "Go back
to reading beginner books", so I'm hoping that someone here is
willing to actually answer my question as opposed to brushing me
off because they were unwilling to help...
And yes, I have read books on the topic and gone through tons
of the documentation and not found the answer to this. I have
ActionScript 1 and JavaScript experience, so this whole business
    shouldn't be this hard.
I am using ActionScript 3 in Flash CS3.
    My problem is this:
I need to find out how to send commands between stuff on the
stage and stuff that's defined in a class.
I have had this issue for ages and kept trying to find ways
around it since so far I haven't been able to find help for it.
    For example:
When using a document class, how can I access the current
    frame number of the Stage?
Or using a document class, how can I access any object (like
a MovieClip with instance name) that was put on the stage using the
    IDE?
Currently, to be more specific, I am trying to do something
    really simple:
Make a button work on my stage that is not always visible.
With AS3 that's not as easy anymore as it used to be.
So what I did now is create the button in the document class,
used addChild and set it to alpha = 0.
Now, when the Stage reaches specific frames (i.e. ones with
labels, and I got this part figured out), it is supposed to make
the button visible. Then I can add event listeners and stuff, and I
can figure that part out myself.
I don't know how to access the stage frame number from the
document class, so I put it into a frame script in frame 1, but now
this script cannot access the button that is defined in the
    document class.
    It's driving me bananas...
PLEASE, someone here, can someone please explain to me how I
    can make this work?
I have seen plenty of diagrams of the Display List and the
Object Hierarchy, but none of that explains how to actually USE any
    of it...
Thanks so much in advance to anyone who is willing to spend
    some time to answer!

Well, first of all, I have to say that AS3 has basically been
designed to be difficult on purpose, in that all this interaction
between objects is purposefully very strict. For this reason, I
still use AS2 for all my basic Flash work. AS3 is just a lot more
involved, a lot more strict, a lot less forgiving... you need a lot
of experience with it before it starts to make sense.
Now, I think I might have a few specific answers to your
    questions:
From any DisplayObject (this includes any Document class,
which has to extend MovieClip or in some cases Sprite) you can
access the Stage using the 'stage' property.
However, stage is probably not exactly what you want, you
want the main timeline, which is the child of stage. To access the
main timeline, you can use the 'root' property of any
    DisplayObject.
However, unless you have strict mode off, Flash won't let you
just say "root.myMovieClip" because the root property is of the
type DisplayObject, which is not a dynamic class (meaning you can't
add properties to it) and it has no built in property "myMovieClip"
so it thinks you made a mistake. So you have to "cast" the root
property as a MovieClip, which *is* dynamic so it will let you try
to reference anything on it (like AS1/2 did for everything.)
So what all that means is this should work from inside you
    document class:
    (root as MovieClip).myMovieClip
    or
    MovieClip(root).myMovieClip
Either will successfully reference a MovieClip you had put on
the main stage in the IDE and named "myMovieClip".
Rather than setting the alpha to 0, try setting visible to
false. I think this will disable all interactive events, where
simply setting alpha to 0 would make it still be interactive.

  • PDF form filled in Preview does not display correctly in Adobe Reader/Acrobat?

I recently received a PDF form from my bank, and filled in the fields and affixed my signature. Saved the form. The recipeint of the form opened the PDF in Acrobat or Adobe Reader and the fields don't display the filled in form, unless you click in the field. After you click out of the field, the entry disappears. When you print the form from Reader or Acrobat, the fields are blank, but the signature prints.
Before saving the form from Preview, the fields appear normally in Reader/Acrobat.
Running Lion 10.7 and Preview 5.5.
    Anyone else have this happen?

I've since found out that there is somewhat of a "fix" that addresses a way to see the form entries in Acrobat, but doesn't resolve the problem the Preview creates. There is a script available on the Adobe forum that can be installed into Adobe Acrobat: http://blogs.adobe.com/pdfdevjunkie/2009/11/script_to_fix_mac_osx_previewa.html. The link and also explains the problem which should really be addressed by Apple. After installation, it will appear in the Edit menu of Acrobat. Once you open a Preview form, selecting "Fix Field Appearances" will repair the form so that the entries are visible.
Preview will still create bad forms, but this script will allow them to be visible in Acrobat. Unfortunately if you're sending a form to someone, there's no way to know if the recipient is using Preview or Acrobat and whether they even know about the problem. So you would have to create the form in Preview, open it in Acrobat, fix the field appearances and re-save. So it's not really a fix, just a work-around. Still don't use Preview for this reason.
I don't know if the script works with Adobe Reader, there's no mention that it does or doesn't in the forum entry.
