Fast External Drive Options Macbook Pro 15"

Hello.
I own a 15" Macbook pro 15" core i5 processor in it etc.. I have a dock style enclosure for 2 SATA hard drives that has USB connect and also eSATA. The USB is INCREDIBLY SLOW. I am waiting sometimes 2-3 minutes just to have a song start playing in iTunes... I am looking for a way to use eSATA on this laptop. I bought an Expresscard/34 with eSATA on it because I read that would work with Macbook pros but I was dissapointed when I found out that this generation of them does not support it!! I am running ProTools M-Powered 8, which requires me to use my only Firewire port to hook up my audio interface.
I love my Macbook and the MacOS, everything about it is better but this small problem is a large hindrance to my workflow. I guess I should add that the hard drive dock is plugged into a Hub. Perhaps If I plug the dock into the second USB port which I hope has it's own separate bus I should see SOME improvement. =(
Perhaps somebody here has something that might help.

I knew it wasn't going to cut it, I just don't know much about all these small revisions to the macbook pro. Having never seen an expresscard before I assumed that the SD card slot doubled as the expresscard slot. The people at my apple store said nothing about the expresscard not being on the 15" model when I bought it and asked questions about it. In fact they went looking for expresscards for eSATA at the apple store and ended up recommending Newegg to purchase one. I've just been really mis-informed about this whole expresscard thing.
I guess I can sell this eSATA/USB dock and look for a firewire hub and enclosure. are there any docks that are reasonable priced?
By the way, My internal drive works fine for playing back audio that has already been recorded. Mixing is actually faster than on my desktop! The mac screams compared to it. I have sessions in excess of 5gb of audio that play back fine off the system drive, but I will need a decently fast external drive in order to record audio. No Digital Audio workstations respond well when recording to the system drive. =/

  • Format external drive on macbook pro

    Hi,
    HI,
I have a  question  on  " to format an external drive " (I bought an 'intenso). I have a macbook pro running  mountain lion and found already some answers via different replies  but before doing anything I should not do, I would like to ask you waht exactly I have to select on the disk utility
    - at the left side of the disk utility : what should I choose
first line 1tb intenso external  USB
                        OR
                                  second line intenso mounted partition
    - at the right hand side : what should I choose
selecting on  first  line option on the left  I  have 4 options at the right hand side  (journaled, journaled / encypted, case sensitive /
journaled or case sensitive / journaled / encrypted)
                        OR
selection  the second line option on the left  I have only 2 options  at the right hand side  ( journaled or  case sensitive / journaled )
    What to select ?
After doing the above,  will the external be ready or do I have to do something else. Noticed somewhere "encrypt" ?
Thanks for giving me some more details.

    Hi,
Thank you so much but I need some more help.
The drive is new and there is nothing on it so that should be fine.
But when i go to "partition", I see indeed the "options" buttom but I can not select it. It says I have to select a partition scheme. On the screen it shows "Partition layout  -- current" and when I change it to "1 partition" I can follow the steps you mentioned (I can select up to "16 partitions").
Should I select "1 partition" ?  What does this mean ? Maybe you know a link where I can find info on that subject as I want to learn something more and know at least   what I am doing.
    Thanks.

  • Downloading PC/Windows files from an external drive to MacBook Pro?

I have always been a PC user and just purchased the newest MacBook Pro for my first Apple experience ever. I have LOADS of photos and iTunes saved on a Seagate Maxtor external drive I want to put on my MacBook, but when I connected them got all kinds of warnings that the data on the external would be erased. I immediately disconnected and searched both to be sure I didn't loose anything. The external was fine. The MacBook had about 45 jpegs off the external saved in 'all images' on the finder, but they won't open in iPhoto. How do I be sure I don't loose anything? And how do I get all the photos from the external into iPhoto? I am very Mac/Apple ignorant...

There was a window that said that, but there was also a window that said something about the drive had to be re-formatted (although that wasn't the word it used) to be compatible with the Mac. There were 4 windows that popped up very quickly, but I saw the one about loosing all data on the drive and freaked!

  • Using External Drives with MacBook Pro - General - Freezing

I keep my music on an external drive and also have a drive hooked up for Time Machine. My macbook pro frequently crashes... especially when I first open the computer. I then have to reboot. In general, what are the best type of drives and best type of connections to use when there will always be two external drives hooked to this machine. Would increasing RAM help? I have 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 2 gigs of RAM.

  • Can i use an external drive in macbook pro mid 2012?

replaced my optical drive with new matshita UJ8A8 drive in my macbook pro 13 mid 2012. problem was prior to replacing every type of disc wold be ejected, now when disc goes in new drive makes a sound and then ejects???? any ideas? I have 16 gig of ram in pc

I'm not sure why it wouldn't? The Apple external USB SuperDrive will not work with your machine, but there are a lot of other third-party drives out there that should have no problem. Even though you have USB 3.0 ports on your machine, any USB 2.0 external optical drive should be fine -> a slow optical drive (and they're all slow at writing and reading asa  limitation of the media, not the port) is the norm.
If I were you, I would just check out one of the $30-50 Asus, LG, etc., external optical drives out there. It should work with any Mac.
    Good luck,

  • What is the best external drive for Macbook Pro?

Migration Assistant is not moving files from my Macbook OS X 10.5.8 to My new Macbook Pro just purchased. Apple Support suggested I transfer thru an external drive. They suggested a 1 TB. They said it would be sufficient for migration and afterward for back up and storage of media and pics. What would be the best one for this purpose?
    Thank You

Go to OWC and purchase a drive and an enclosure. Put it together yourself. Takes about five minutes and a screwdriver. Or you can purchase one already complete from them if you prefer.

  • Western Digital Passport 250Gb external drive and MacBook Pro

    Hello,
Has anyone with the 15" 2.2ghz 120Gb hd MacBook Pro able to connect this Western Digital Passport 250 GB external drive to only 1 USB port and has it working?
I intend to buy both of these hardwares, but was told that I may need to get the extra Y-cable that can connect to 2 USB ports of the MacBook Pro since only 1 USB port may not have enough power to work the WD external drive? The WD drive comes with only 1 "standard" USB cable.
    Thanks.

I've got the 120GB passport and it's worked when I plugged it into the right-side port. But I prefer my connections on the left (to keep room for my mouse) so I got a powered Kensington Dome hub that I run thru my left USB port and have plugged the HD into the hub and that also works.

  • What is the best external hard drive with MacBook Pro

What is the best external hard drive with MacBook Pro?

I agree with Allan, and that link is also called OWC, their hard drives are great.  Have three of their Mercury Pro Elite 2 TB quad interface drives.  They will connect eSATA, Firewire 800 & 400, USB2, so broad reange of options.  Drives seem to come Mac HFS formatted, but I always reformat and partition the drives.  Service and quarantees are top notch.
They offer a wide range of drives/drive systems so like Allan said, spend some time seeing what the have.

Using Carbon Copy Cloner which is quicker firewire 800 Macbook Pro to external hard drive or Macbook Pro to same via Airport Extreme?

Firewire 800 is the fastest and most reliable. Also it's bootable if you hold the option key down on a wired or built in keyboard.  Not bootable via Airport obviously or if Filevault is used.
It's only your first clone that's usually takes the longest, it's shorter when it updates as you only do the changes which you can control to keep a pure clone if you wish.

    Hi robfromkinglake west,
Try and isolate the issue.  Check if it's only with this drive.

  • I erased my drive on Macbook pro, trying to reinstale os x Maverick but it is not available on App store, what should I do?

I erased my drive on Macbook pro, trying to re-install os x Maverick but it is not available on App store, what should I do?

Install Yosemite instead of Mavericks. Or you can do the following if your computer supports Internet Recovery:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • 24-inch Mid 2007 as external display for Macbook Pro Retina?

I'm a video editor looking for a new laptop. Tough decisions, but these facts may help my decision...
Can I use my 24-inch Mid 2007 as external display for Macbook Pro Retina?
And if so, would the Macbook be able to access the external hard drives that are connected to the iMac? Or do the external hard drives have to be connected to the Macbook Retina?
Retina's picture quality is just incredible but compared to Macbook Pro non-retina you sacrifice: disc drive, port options, customization, anti-glare screen. And its more expensive. Arghh

I would use the retina as the primary screen for the canvas and viewer, while putting the browser and timeline on the iMac.
Apple won't help here. Unfortunately, they leave they're old products in the dust and wouldn't waste time writing an article about connecting a macbook retina to an '07 iMac.
Thank you for replying though Ralph. The answer has to be out there somewhere.

For pictures, Image Capture is another option.
