Fast-Forward/Skippy Playback for long clips imported to PP

Hello all.
Normally, I try to avoid help forums, and figure out problems myself, however, this time, I cannot for the life of me understand what is going on. To give you the whole story:
I'm putting together a video for my church. In this video, are clips of short interviews with church members (roughly 15 sec - 1 min long) with 4 2-hour long videos time-lapsed at 7000% each. The videos were shot using a JVC HDD camera, and I had to convert the videos to .AVI from .MOV so PP could use them. After converting all of the files, I checked each one using WMP to make sure it still looked good and wasn't squished or anything. Then, I started by importing the short interviews into PP.
Those came in fine. I was able to take each one, edit it the way I wanted it, and line it up on the timeline with the others. My problems started however with my first 2-hour time-lapse video.
I noticed that before dropping it on the timeline, playback in the 1st monitor was choppy, "fast-forwarded", but the audio was fine. I dropped it into the timeline, and went ahead and unlinked the video and audio to get rid of the audio, but the video itself was still choppy. In fact, the video would only take about 2 minutes to "finish" playing even though it was only 2 minutes into the 2 hour-long clip, and I could see that on the timeline. Since I didn't require editing on these time-lapse clips, and I was just dropping them next to each other, I went ahead and changed the speed to 7000%, and proceeded to do the same for the next 3 long clips. I figured rendering would clear up the problems, but seeing it was going to take 12 or so hours to render, I decided I better try here before I wasted 12 hours only to not have a usable video.
Again, the time-lapse videos do not require editing...I merely need them to play at 7000% speed. However, now, I am having a problem with another clip. This clip is roughly 13 minutes long, and it is giving me the same problems as the 2-hour clips. The video fast-forwards, then freezes, then skips, and the audio is just fine in the background.
I am running Windows Vista 64-bit, a Dual-core processor, 4GBs of RAM, and an NVIDIA 8800gt Superclocked Edition graphics card. Besides the processor being lack-luster, I feel as though my computer is adequate enough to handle what I am doing...so it must be a problem with...well, what -I- am trying to do.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
-Haden

Oh, believe me, I'm not using this camera by choice...I do not have one of my own, and on short notice, this is all I had to work with. After this project, however, the church will be purchasing one of the nice Sony MiniDV cams (I can't remember the "series" number or style, but I used them in high school during film-editing class a few years back...the silver Sony cams with the widescreen lens and more "professional" look...you know, the $3000 ones...). I've already requested, lol...
Anyway, thanks for your help, Mr. Simon. What format do you feel would be suited best for this conversion? I want to keep it around the same file size...maybe from .MOD to .mpg (MPEG2)? I'm already trying that as we speak, but to save me some time...mind recommending a format? This thing has to be exported to a .avi file and on my thumbdrive ready by 7am EST...and it's 9:13pm EST now...

  • Clip inspector-as i try to fast forward,i movie freezes and clip preview section goes blank. please help.

As I try to fast forward my selected clip, the video preview section goes blank and the clip doesnt get fast forwarded. I have to restart the imovie in order to be able to get the preview back. and in all this, the clip inspector never works. I updated my mac's software several times hoping that it would resolve the issue but nothing of that kind happened. Please help me.

Select the clip in the timeline and then the drop down menu should work okay. You can hold down the control key and click on the clip to get the drop down menu and select retime editor.

  • Can't fast forward in QuickTime for iPhone 3.0?

Does anyone know how to get the slider bar that allows you to fast forward a Quicktime on iPhone 3.0? On the previous version, any quicktime apps had the volume slider on the bottom, and the play timer up top, which you could slide to forward to or go back to a time on the track. On 3.0, i only see the volume slider, and a 30 second rewind, and a 'next track' button. what if you want to fast forward?

I suspect it's the way they were recorded. I've seen that behaviour before with music and video files I have downloaded. I'm not sure of the actual reason or any possible solution.

  • Long clip import errors on 15 inch MacBook Pro confirmed to be HARDWARE??

Our family has two MacBook Pros, one a 15", one a 13". The 15" is a 2.53 GHz, 4Gb ram, 500G 7200RPM HDD model, the 13 a 2.26, 4 Gb, 250Gb 5400HDD model. All software is completely up to date and we use no third party software other than fusion and MS office on both laptops.
We use the 15" for our iPhoto and iMovie. Our Camera is a Sony HDR CX12.
We have been plagued by the dreaded red import errors trying to import clips from our AVCHD camera. The errors occur when trying to import clips of 2 min or more. We have tried everything imaginable. We dropped the import size to "large" from "full", we tried every setting imaginable, at Genius behest we have wiped the system, reinstalled the OS, zapped and reset every imaginable cache, setting, etc. We've tried aroma therapy and crystals. Tried it plugged in, on battery, tried the USB cable, a card reader, and even camera archives and disk images, quit all programs, all with the same result... error!
In desperation I took the HDD out of the 15" MacBook and dropped it into the 13" (lesser) MacBook.
It just plain works. I can import 12 min clips while surfing the web, downloading podcasts, answering emails, you name it. I put the drive back in the 15" machine and... error. Strangely even short clips the 15" is able to manage import faster on the lesser machine!?
I am guessing iMovie has a hardware ID bug. Usually the MacBook pro has a higher end graphics chip but our 2.53 has the same chip as the smaller MacBooks, might iMovie be expecting a more robust graphics chip in a 15"??
Can others confirm a similar situation.
other than iMovie the 15" works swimmingly.

These ideas won't explain the problem, but might help establish facts and narrow the problem.
On your menu, go to Apple, About This Mac then click the More Info button. This will give you all of the configuration info about your MBP. You can then verify the graphics processor the system has (or thinks it has!).
You could add a new user in Preferences, Accounts. Creating a new user, log in as that user and before and launch iMovie.
I don't know, does Memory Stick have different class levels such as SDHC cards? If so, perhaps trying a bumped up card would overcome some undetectable anomaly particular to the 15" MBP.

  • New iMovie ?  can not fast forward or slow down clips ??

    Can anyone help me?
When i try to fast forward or slow down a clip in iMovie i can see the option in "Modify" menu but it does not allow me to select the options

The clip must first be in a Project before you can speed it up or slow it down.
You can't modify a clip when it's just in an Event.

  • Fast Forward in iTunes

    Hello
I know that in iTunes, you can fast forward a music for 5 seconds by hiting Command-Option-right arrow.
What I want it to do this from any application, when iTunes is not the frontmost.
I tried the follwing script, but it doesn't work:
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "iTunes"
    key code 124 using {command down, option down}
    end tell
    end tell
(key code 124 is right arrow)
    Any help? Thankls

    Hi Vicc
Why not try iTunes fast forward, resume, etc etc
tell application "iTunes" to fast forward
    delay 5
    tell application "iTunes" to resume
    --tell application "iTunes" to rewind
    --tell application "iTunes" to play
    --tell application "iTunes" to playpause
--tell application "iTunes" to next track

  • Fast Forward & Rewind doesn't work for long audio files

I have loaded several mp3 files into the Pre via USB.  Some are 2+ hours long, some are a few minutes.  Fast forwarding thru the track doesn't work on the long files.  Holding down the fast-forward arrows will cause the audio to stutter in the same place, sometimes go BACKWARDS instead of forwards, and eventually it will go silent.  Pressing Pause, Play, whatever won't bring it back and ytou have to start the audio file over.
    Help, Palm!
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Yea, the fast forward is way lame and pretty much...
    You get the idea.

  • No chapter fast forward for video playback in os7

Anyone else notice that you can't hit the fast forward button and jump to the next chapter in an iTunes video? I can go back to the menu and skip from there, but not while watching the video. Not a big glitch, but annoying. Why do the all the updates always have this bug? You'd think they would have tested them before hand.

It has always seemed that Bridge has been the stepchild of Adobe since its inception and that Adobe spends precious little effort and resources on it.
Remember that Bridge was born as nothing more than Photoshop's Browser.  Nothing more.
Then, in a straight marketing stunt, Adobe decided artificially to lump together a number of totally unrelated applications into artificial "suites."  These are in fact totally non-related applications that were artificially bundled by fiat of bean counters and marketers.  The engineering teams for the individual point applications are totally independent from each other and are not only not in in the same building but in different cities, different states and, some, in different countries.  They have pathetically little communication among themselves.
The humble Photoshop Browser was renamed Bridge and jerry-rigged to serve as some sort of go-between vehicle among the applications also jerry-ringed into artificial suites.  (Definition of JERRY-RIGGED: organized or constructed in a crude or improvised manner <a jerry–rigged plan>.
Don't expect too much from Bridge, and don't complain about it too loudly, or you might find yourself among others who have been told, in effect, that "Adobe doesn't charge you for Bridge."  As a "free" byproduct, you get what you paid for.
In this context, just look at what has happened to the value of Adobe stock in the last five years: –28.20% (minus).
Compare that to Apple during the exact same period: +358.43%.

  • Why can't some clips fast forward?

I am on my first ever imovie project for school. I need to fast forward some of the clips so that my video can fit into the stipulated duration. Some clips can fast forward whitest others can't. Those that can't fast forward can however respond to slow motion. What is the reason and how can the problem be solved?

I am unable to adjust playback speed as well. The options for modifying 2x, 4x, 8x, and 20x are not highlighted to click on. The fast foward section under modify is highlighted.

  • VHS import (via Sony DVcam), some tapes display video only in fast forward

I, like many others, have been copying my VHS tapes to iMovie. This has been going fine, but I have part of one tape and all of another where no video displays when the tape is played on the VCR, UNLESS that is, one is fast forwarding or reversing, when it looks fine (though a bit faster than desirable for capture).
My old VCR died, and I picked up a nice used Panasonic at Goodwill (couldn't even find one at the local electronic store except as dedicated VHS to DVD). It seems to work fine (much better than my old one in fact).
Any idea on what my problem is? My old VHS camera was an Olympus that could also record SVHS (I think that was what the higher-quality mode was called). Is that something that requires an SVHS VCR to play? I did use to know this stuff, but it's lost in the distant-past memory cells.
    Many thanks,
    Steve

It sounds as if the questionable tapes may have been recorded in LP (Long Play) mode. This gives a much narrower recording band on the tape, which may not match up with other tape decks unless the head alignment exactly matches the original.
Maybe your new, er 'used', Panasonic doesn't have an LP playback speed, or - as it's a 'used' machine - the heads aren't quite as properly aligned as they should be ..or perhaps that was the case with your old VHS camera.
S-VHS video won't play back at all on normal VHS equipment - although the sound should be OK if it was recorded on the normal lower-quality 'longitudinal' track (..S-VHS also embeds higher quality audio on an audio track within the video, just like digital video).
So yes; S-VHS does need an S-VHS machine to play it.
LP recordings need an LP-capable VHS player (..most are..) but tolerances between the original equipment, on which the tape was recorded, and the playback device need to be fairly tight.
Have you tried adjusting the Tracking control? ..or try playing the tapes on a JVC player which has a 'BEST' facility, and which tries to adjust the tracking for you.
Otherwise, as Bengt suggests, try to play the tapes on various other machines till you find one which gives a decent picture!

  • How Can I Fast Forward through clips - Any key Command?

I am watching some long clips in my event library ... I want to choose sections to move to the project library.
As the movie plays ... I can use the arrow (left and right) to slow mo forward or backward.
What I need is a key command that will give me a fast forward ... say 2 or 3 times play speed.
The only way I know to fast forward is to use the trackpad with my fingers but this way I keep losing my position on the clips and skip over rows ... you also have to drag back to the beginning of the next row and know where you are ..
To find parts of clips that you want to select and drag up to your project this seems like a necessity especially when viewing a long movie ... it's really tedious to have to drag through the whole thing.
    AM I out of luck?

    OOOpps ... sorry ... wrong forum ....

  • After i have downloaded an album from iCloud to my new macbook pro. Itunes will only play one song at a time. If i hit the fast forward or back button will not do anything. I have to use the mouse to hit the next tidal in the album then hit play for it

after i have downloaded an album from iCloud to my new macbook pro. Itunes will only play one song at a time. If i hit the fast forward or back button will not do anything. I have to use the mouse to hit the next tidal in the album then hit play for it to play the next song. Or put it in the UP NEXT.

First, make sure these items have checkmarks next to their names in iTunes. Continuous playback only works on checked items. Itunes will play all checked items in a list whether or not they're from the same album.
If you see that nothing in your library is checked and you want to check everything, hold down Ctrl while checking an item. This checks everything.
Next, fixing the "1 of 1" problem is easily. Select all the tracks that make up the book/album. Let's say there are 15. Press Ctrl-I. Doublecheck that the album box is filled in with the name of the book, and if not, type it there. Enter "15" in the box for the total number of tracks. Click OK. Now all the items should be "1 of 15," "2 of 15," and so on.

  • Why can I no longer use my headphones remote to fast forward or rewind music videos on iPhone since upgrading to ios7?

Why can I no longer use my headphones remote to fast forward or rewind music videos on iPhone since upgrading to ios7?

The YouTube app is not included in iOS 6 (I think because the licensing agreement with google ended). You will either need to try one of the YouTube apps from the store (there is an iPhone optimised app from google, and other people have said that they are working on an iPad version), or (if this isn't the version that you have tried) try accessing the mobile version via Safari : http://m.youtube.com (you can create a home screen shortcut for the site)

  • Is there a way to fast forward the movie clip, so it shows as fast forward.

Is there a way to fast forward the movie clip, so it shows as fast forward in the final clip, please help. (iMovie 08')

In iMovie 08 - the answer is no. It does not have the video fx that were in iMovie 06. You can get iMovie 06 as a free download, if you already have iLife '08. Then you have access to a much better programme for doing the editing tasks you want.
