Fast start for Quicktime movies on the web

Hi All,
So I finished my first FCE project and posted the movie on my web site. But Quicktime doesn't start playing the movie until after it is completely downloaded. This doesn't happen with the other movies I have on my site, and as far as I can remember I used the sames options in Quicktime export. I selected the "fast start" option in the box "Prepare for Internet Streaming", as I always do.
Is there something more that I need to do when exporting a FCE project? Or is there another option that I forgot in the Quicktime export settings?
Thanks in advance for your help
Florence

OK, I tried again and again and again... and I finally know what I did wrong. The movie was exported from FCE with the fast start option, but then I opened in with Quicktime to make a small change (define the poster), and apparently this also removed the fast start option. Now I'll know not to change anything after the export :-/

  • What are the best settings for Quicktime movies on the web?

I've created a movie and exported it from IMovie. One version is 7.3 megs, and loads fairly quickly when I have it on a web page. I used broadband medium settings from IMovie to create it. I also created a file that is 19.3 megs using broadband high settings from IMovie. That file is way too big to load in a reasonable amount of time. Thing is, I can't stretch the 7.3 meg version (or don't know how) to make it any bigger. Is there a way I can make it bigger in the web page? Maybe that's a Dreamweaver question. Thanks.

You would need to add a few lines of code to your Web page and that depends on which html "style" you've used.
For the "object/embed" style code you would change your dimensions from those found in the source file to those you want to use in your page. Then add scale="tofit" in the embed tag code and param name="scale" value="tofit" in the object tag.
Don't forget to add 16 pixels to the height to show the movie controller (if used).

  • Help with authoring and posting Quicktime movies on the web

    Greetings all,
I recently launched a new website (www.articles-of-war.com) with a 'movie trailer' page (http://www.articles-of-war.com/pages/down_trai.html) similiar to the movie trailer pages on the Apple site.
The page has links to Quicktime movies of different sizes (small, medium, high, HD, etc). When I click any movie, though, it takes a long time for them to appear before they can play (the blue Quickime "Q" logo appears as the entire movie loads, for example), rather than playing almost immediately.
When I built the trailer pages, I made sure to set "autoplay" to "true."
When I authored the Quicktime movies, I used these settings:
    H.264
Prepare For Internet Streaming (Fast Start)
    Data Rate: Automatic
I'm sure I'm skipping some simple step to make these movies play right away - is there anyone that can offer some advice?

You lost the "fast start" feature when you added the annotations and then used a regular "Save".
Use "Save As" (QuickTime Pro) to restore the fast start feature and upload those new files again.
You should also consider a more modern audio codec than IMA 4:1 to reduce the size of your audio track.

  • Can't view Quicktime Movies on the web

this is what im trying to view
    http://www.solent.ac.uk/360/hamwic_bedroom.html
it worked a while back but not now, now i get the light blue logo with the question mark
cant change file types in preferences they are not greyed out they dont even show as a list, it says programatically set
i found qtp whatever it was in regedit changed everything to full control
moved quicktime .xml file onto desktop from apple computer folder
uninstalled and installed quicktime a few times
tried with ie8 google chrome and cometbird
    no luck
quicktime is terrible, i dont know why so many things on the web need it to play, they may as well ask notepad to open the files.
    cheers

I'm having the exact same problem... Don't know when but IE and Firefox are refusing to play quicktime files. I can run the quicktime player and play MP3 and MOV files (which is what I normally do) but nothing is playing from the browser.
I've tried pretty much everything I can think of... in the end, QuickTime is not showing up under Set Default Programs or Set Program Associations (via QuickTime Preferences->Browser->MIME Settings or File Types).
I can install QT-Lite, and everything works for the browser... except now I don't have a standalone player that plays MP3 and MOV files because I cannot have QT-Lite installed alongside QuickTime.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Quicktime movies on the web

I have placed short quicktime movie clips on my website saved as H.264. Unfortunately some can see it others get nothing or just sound. File was originally created as DVCPro HD and exported as H.264 with 1000 bit rate and loaded on my site. Is there a particular format and settings to export with that everyone can view and that holds the same good quality as H.264
    http://www.ronfrankproductions.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/demo4.mov
    thanks.

Is there a particular format and settings to export with that everyone can view and that holds the same good quality as H.264
No such animal. No matter what compression format combination you use, there will always be someone out there who cannot or will not use the the required software to view your files. In the case of H.264/AAC, viewers are limited to those using QT 7 or an equivalent media player. MPEG4/AAC would allow you to extend compatibility back to QT 6 and equivalent players but it still does not guarantee any particular user will have the required software and means you would have to increase the video data rate to maintain the same level of quality. You will simply have to use whatever compression format you think will reach your primary target audience and not worry about the rest or offer the content in multiple compression formats and hope for the best.

  • Hi, I just started a new movie and the program is running very slow. Is there a way to clean up my iMovie program so that it goes faster? Please help.

Hi, I just started a new movie and the program is running very slow. Is there a way to clean up my iMovie program so that it goes faster? Please help.

There is nothing you can do with iMovie program itself.  Slow response in usually due to a shortage of system resources (CPU, RAM and disk space).
How much free disk space do you have on your boot drive and what is the capacity of the drive?
You can check memory utilization while running iMovie using Activity Monitor (in Applications/Utilities).  What does the Memory tab show for Swap used?
Are you running many other processor-intensive applications a the same time?
If you have a lot of events and projects, it will help a bit to hide the ones you are not using by moving them from your iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders into an enclosing folder so iMovie doesn't load them.

  • Putting movies on the web for download - help and advice needed

    Hello everybody,
I'm not sure whether this is the right place for this question, but here's hoping...
I've produced an hour long DVD on the history of my car club. I have produced the DVD using iMovie and iDVD, and it's fine.
We will be having a number of these DVDs produced, but we also want to offer the movie as a download on our website. Of course this needs to be compressed, but what I want to be able to do is offer the user a file that will burn them a DVD with chapter markers etc, just like the DVD I have, in one operation - a straightforward duplicate. I also want to be able to let them download a label and jewel case insert and offer a complete package.
Is an easy duplicate like this possible, and what sort of file size would the compressed item be? As the DVD is close to capacity, I assume the original will be around 4.7 Gb. There are also some jpegs on the DVD as extras.
Certainly, it would be desirable for the user to play it on their computer, but the main aim is to get a disc TV ready (in the PAL format).
I know you can download movies from the web, and I've downloaded trailers onto my iPod and played them back on a 32" TV and they're excellent. What I don't know is what software will do this. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

    Steve,
what I want to be able to do is offer the user a file that will burn them a DVD with chapter markers etc, just like the DVD I have, in one operation - a straightforward duplicate.
I suppose you could put up a 4 something gigabyte DVD disk image up somewhere on the web, but I wouldn't want to try and download it! Do you have a site available with this kind of storage and download bandwidth?
Normally, the things I've seen on the web are reduced in image size to something like 320x240 - this reduces the file size to 1/4 the full size file.
For Apple users, H.264 gives a pretty compact file with decent quality, but I'm not sure many PC users would be able to use it. In any event, people couldn't make a DVD with chapters without extra work.
You could get QuickTime Pro and try converting the movie (or a part of it anyway) to H.264 (or 'regular' mpg-4) see how it looks.

  • Hello there - I am sharing an iPhoto library across two accounts on the same computer - it works fine EXCEPT for Quicktime movies - they play on one account and claim I don't have the rights on the other - all permissions are on and ok?

Hello there - I am sharing an iPhoto library across two accounts on the same computer - it works fine EXCEPT for Quicktime movies - they play on one account and claim I don't have the rights on the other - all permissions are on and ok?

It should be in the Users/ Shared folder.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Note the option to check and repair Library Permissions

  • What's the best way to save clips for general viewing on the web?

I am new to iMovie, but not to Macs or file formats.
I have taken some video of kittens at a local cat shelter, hoping to post the clips at the shelter's website in efforts to get the kittens adopted.
I managed to work through iMovie myself, saving the clips so that the person responsible for the website can post them. I first saved them as .mov files - the web person can view them, but others cannot. (They are all using IBM-compatibles) She is trying to get them to launch from an html page. So I tried saving them as .wmv files, but the little fade-outs I placed at the ends of the clips were truncated... the fade-ins were there, but not the fade-outs.
The video started out very good quality, and I would like to retain as much of that quality as possible, while of course keeping them small and manageable. But first of all, I need the web person to be able to post them, and then need everyone to be able to view them.
Am I asking too much, given there are so many ibms out there?

you ask for a solution of a very common problem: the universal video format...
due to sheer market power, .avi and .wmv are the most used standards.
avi is just a container, little supported on Mac; you can choose it as an export option in iM, but it offers just a few compressors (dv/bmp = nice looking, but large, cinepak=small but ugly...)
for export to .wmv, you need, as mish mentioned, to buy a plug-in from flip4mac, we do read enthusiastic responses on that product... but, Mac-users need additional software to read these files (the free plug-in from flip4mac or the free wmv player for Mac from Microsoft)
RealPlayer needs costly encoders, and again special players...
a nice option is .flv, flash-video... needs investment into FlashMX, $$$$ or shareware as VisualHub...
finally, which works for me and my few PC friends, is usage of mp4... without .mov container; choose "mpeg4" in the expert options... your friend has to open that file once in Windows MediaPlayer manually once and save it again, to get rid of some meta-data "Quicktime needed" (which isn't true)... some PCs open these mp4 by double-click, some PCs demand for QT4Windows.. but, as said, manually (open dialog from within WMP) these mp4s are compatible..
better pic results are earned with that little free app iSquint, I LOVE to recommend, it has an excellent algorithm...
sorry, lots of tech blabla... difficult issue...
    helpful?

  • Export settings for quicktime movie to use in DVD Studio Pro

    The workflow:
I created a movie and did extensive sound adjustments in iMovie and a few video edits, and exported it to a quicktime format:
    compression H.264
    Quality: High
    Frame reordering: yes
    Encoding mode: multi-pass
    Dimensions: 1280x720
Since then I upgraded to FCS, and tried to create a DVD with DVD SP and import the movie, and I get this error:
    Import error:
One or more files failed to import. Common reasons for this are that they do not match the current project's video standard or their file format is not supported.
I'm fairly sure I have matching video standard...and the file format has always been supported before.
I imported the quicktime (.mov) file to FCP and added some edits, recreated the chapter markers, and early on there was a pop-up that said my movie format did not match the project settings, so I checked the "okay" to adjust the video file to match.
When I finished, I exported the file from FCP to a quicktime movie with the "current settings" that have always worked with DVD Studio Pro before, and I'm getting the same error.
I don't know where the problem is.  Both the original movie I created in iMovie and the movie I recreated in FCS will import to iDVD.  I wanted the better quality production from DVDSP....
I no longer have the iMovie project file.  (I thot I was done.)  I do  have the original footage, but I'm already three days in and hoping to  avoid starting over.
I would sure appreciate any help!
    Thanks!

The specifications you listed are the problem.
I can't comment on iMovie -don't use it personally.
From FCP, you would export a self contained movie using the current Timeline settings (not H.264 ever)
Bring that file into Compressor and apply one of the time based DVD presets that the running time of your movie fits into. This will produce a MPEG 2 video file and an AC3 audio file. Bring both into DVDSP and author.
A DVD video is always standard def 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL).
Converting the output from FCP to H.264 is adding an unneeded compression stage that will compromize quality -because DVD assets are always MPEG 2 / AC3. Even if DVDSP accepts that H.264 file, it gets transcoded again using DVDSP's own compression system.
All of this is covered in the DVDSP user manual. Take the time to read it. DVD authoring is complicated if you just jump in and start poking around, simple if you take the time to understand the basics.

  • Creating a QuickTime movie with the new Canon T5i  camera in iMovie 9.0.9.

Help needed creating a QuickTime movie with the new Canon T5i  camera in iMovie 9.0.9.  The project is done and looks good...I need help understanding what settings need to be set so I can make a QuickTime movie in the highest quality that would fit the ratio of 16.9 to be sent out to my YouTube page.  I played around with some of the settings and have not come with the right setting for the video.  I want the highest quality with the lowest amount of megabytes…thanks

I would suggest using SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE and choose 1920x1080 (if your source material supports this).
That should work well in YouTube.
If you want to go further with custom QuickTime settings,  here are some that should work, but in my experience, it will be no better than using SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE.
follow the instructions below to create a .mov video that will work on YouTube:
In iMovie, select Share > Export Using QuickTime
Next, you may want to check your Options to verify that the following settings are correct:Video settings
    Compression Type: H.264
    Frame Rate: 30 is preferred. 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 are also acceptable.
    Data Rate: Automatic
    Key Frames: Automatic
    Frame Reordering: Unchecked
    Audio/Sound settings
    Format: AAC
Click Show advanced settings and choose Constant Bit Rate as encoding strategy
    Other settings
Size: Choose the original size of the video
“Prepare for Internet Streaming”: Fast Start

  • How do I open a QuickTime movie in the Player

How do I create a link in Dreamweaver8 which will open a QuickTime movie in the QuickTime Player and not in another browser window of Safari?

Looking at the source of this page, the markup you posted was:
    <pre><a href="Excerpts-The Cult.mov" target="QUICKTIMEPLAYER">Video<br></pre>
    1. An HREF tag needs to be closed with an </a> immediately after the word you're hyperlinking (in this case, "Video").
    2. Many web servers are cAsE sEnSiTiVe. Best to use all lower case chars in your filename, and avoid space chars altogether (spaces are interpreted as a '%20' character code, that can muck things up).
    3. Instead of an HREF tag, you need to use an EMBED tag to invoke the QT Plugin, as demonstrated on the page I linked to above. The HREF tag doesn't understand TARGET="QUICKTIMEPLAYER", only the QT Plugin understands that attribute.
    4. For cross-platform compatibility (specifically with Internet Explorer Win 5.5SP2 & above), you also need to use an OBJECT tag to embed your mov. That will be ignored by browsers that use Netscape-style plugins (they use EMBED), but still read by browsers that use ActiveX controls (i.e: Internet Explorer Win).
You might find it useful to work through the basic embedding QT tutorial, also the ADC HTML Scripting Guide for QT.
If all that makes your head spin, grab a copy of PAGEot and get it to generate the QT markup for you.

  • Html code for Quicktime movie

I just designed my first web site with one html page holding a Quicktime movie. The only browser that does not load it is Safari which keeps looking for a Shockwave movie, which of course does not exist. What do I need to add to the code so that Safari can load the right thing. The site is in DreamweaverMX2004.
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)   safari v2.0.3

Your page code is telling my browser to look for the "wrong" plug-in.
The page uses the wrong class ID and code for the QT plug-in.
Your page uses a .mov file but uses a class ID of:
    clsid:166B1BCA-3F9C-11CF-8075-444553540000
And a plug in download for Macromedia.
A .mov file would use a class ID of:
    clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B
and the plug-in download page should point the the QT download page:
    pluginspage="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/"
More info on the links in the previous threads.
You'll get it sorted out once you use the right code for the media.

  • QuickTime "Lightbox" on the Web

Does anyone know what technique Apple and others use to create that Lightbox-like frame when playing QuickTime videos on the Web? It's the frame that, after clicking on the play video link, jumps out of the Web page and plays the video in front of the page. An example of this can be found at:
    http://www.apple.com/education/teachers-professors/
(click on the vide "Mac for any major" on the page).
Can this be done with a Javascript widget in iWeb?

Roger ~ Apple probably uses their own proprietary method, but see the Movies section here:
    http://www.shadowbox-js.com/index.html
...iWeb's HTML widget uses iFrame and according to THIS old thread, there appears to be a problem with that:
It's said that the lightbox and shadowbox are not supported with iWeb's iFrames... and its true, I have tested it, sadly the lightbox is opening in the iFrame.
You'll also need to insert code in the <head> section of your iWeb pages. +iWeb Buddy+ lets you set up any custom scripting to be injected into the <head> portion of each page:
