"Fast Start" option in QuickTime X?

Please pardon me if this is a trivial question, but I can't seem to find a "Fast Start" option to set in QuickTime X so that videos on the web start to play "progressively" (as they are downloading) rather than waiting until they have completed downloading before starting to play. Does that option exist in QuickTime X?

QuickTime X has no user defined preferences. Exports have no options except the check boxes for file dimensions.
Which "save" option did you choose?

  • Fast start for Quicktime movies on the web

    Hi All,
So I finished my first FCE project and posted the movie on my web site. But Quicktime doesn't start playing the movie until after it is completely downloaded. This doesn't happen with the other movies I have on my site, and as far as I can remember I used the sames options in Quicktime export. I selected the "fast start" option in the box "Prepare for Internet Streaming", as I always do.
Is there something more that I need to do when exporting a FCE project? Or is there another option that I forgot in the Quicktime export settings?
Thanks in advance for your help
    Florence

OK, I tried again and again and again... and I finally know what I did wrong. The movie was exported from FCE with the fast start option, but then I opened in with Quicktime to make a small change (define the poster), and apparently this also removed the fast start option. Now I'll know not to change anything after the export :-/

  • No start with "fast Start"

I have encoded numerous movies out of Final Cut for my iWeb site and can't get them to show and play while they're downloading. They won't show until they are completely loaded even though I encoded them with the "fast start" option checked in the movie settings window. I'm using the H.264 setting. What's strange is there are a few that will show and play while loading but most won't! I can't figure out why!? Below is a link to one of my pages that has links to 2 movies - one movie that works while the other doesn't.
    http://web.mac.com/sammcj/iWeb/Sam%202K6%20Site/Dell.html
The first movie works while the second one just shows the QT icon until its loaded. They were encoded with the same settings...? Anybody else have this problem? If anybody has any insights I would really appreciate it! Thanks

Here is my observation....and hopefully someone like QuickTimeKirk will chime in with the real goods here...
I see your problem. The first movie does not autostart, but it does show the first frame and will indeed play while downloading if the play button is clicked. The second movie only shows the big Q until everything is downloaded and then it will play if clicked (no autoplay).
Now here is the strange part....and I hope you dont mind that I am doing this....I know QuickTimeKirk says never to link directly to the actual QuickTime movie file and all, but a rule is a rule, right????...meant to be broken. And here are two prime examples of where breaking the rules yields positive results...
If you link to the files directly, everything works as you planned out...fast-start, autoplay, everything!
    Dell TechForce, Episode 1
    Dell TechForce, Episode 2
Of course, the reason for this is that the movies are using the QT browser plugin directly and using the fast-start characteristics that you enabled. In iWeb, though, these encoded characteristics are overridden (in my experience) by whatever the parameters are set for in the published .js files.
So for example, your first movie has an associated .js file called "Techforce 1.js" that contains a bunch of QuickTime parameters. Here is an exerpt...
    document.write('<object id="id5" classid="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" codebase="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" width="477" height="285" style="height: 285px; left: 118px; position: absolute; top: 163px; width: 477px; z-index: 1; "><param name="src" value="Techforce%201_files/TechForce1.mov" /><param name="controller" value="true" /><param name="autoplay" value="false" /><param name="scale" value="tofit" /><param name="volume" value="100" /><param name="loop" value="false" /><embed pluginspage="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/" type="video/quicktime" class="mov" width="477" height="285" src="Techforce%201_files/TechForce1.mov" controller="true" autoplay="false" scale="tofit" volume="100" loop="false"></embed></object>');
The underlined parameters are the typically edited parameters in the .js files for QT movies. The three basic parameters are controller, autoplay, and loop...and these occur twice in the code. So changing autoplay from false to true would solve your autoplay problem.
But I don't know why the second movie just displays as a big Q while downloading. Hmm....
Well, I hope at least some of this is helpful to you in your troubleshooting. Best of luck....great videos. Funny stuff.

  • "fast start" for .MP4 H264/AAC ?

    Hi,
I am looking now for a "fast start" option in Compressor 4 for .MP4 H264/AAC encoded files.
Is there a way to do that ?
    Thanks
    Eric

    Eric,
See if this works for you. Start with the Broadband High preset (you could use any preset). Open the Encoder pane; in File Format, choose Quick Time; Click on Video Settings and in Compression Settings, select H.264. Set your  data and then Optimize for streaming. Return to Encoder and open Audio settings to specify thge format you want; In the Encoder, select Streaming and then select Fast Start. In the Extension box, change the extension from .mov to .mp4. You should wind up with a MP4 H.264 CBR preset.
    Good luck.

  • Fast Start h264 files from FCPX ??

Is there a way to enable the Fast Start option on files exported from FCPX?
Whenever I place files on our webserver for online viewing, we set them to Fast Start so one can start viewing them as they download. h264 exports from FCPX do not do this. Is there a way to enable this setting in FCPX?

The dafault did not work, but using them as a starting point, I was able to cobble together a custom setting that works great. Thanks for helping me get over my Compresor anxiety!
I really like the Vimeo service as well, but we do a lot of unusual aspect ratio videos so we can't use Vimoe or Youtube for those videos. Hopefully one of them will soon support custom aspect rations.

  • Fast start problem

I'm playing around with options for sticking movies on my site and have run into a problem with fast start. If I enable 'fast start' the movie does indeed start playing in the browser shortly after it begins to download. No problem there. However, if I use QT7.0.3 to add annotations or set the 'automatically play...' option before uploading the movie no longer plays in the browser until it has completely downloaded.
Is this the expected behaviour? Are Fast start and annotations (and automatically play) mutually exclusive?

'Save as...' offers no Fast start option here. All it offers is 'self-contained' or 'reference'. Assuming this isn't caused by some long-standing QT bug then it would at least be decent of Apple to pop up a window to tell you about it when you use Save. After all, it isn't exactly obvious that Save will kill fast start is it? The only way to find out is to upload the movie to a site, which can take an age, and try to play it.
While I'm here, does anyone happen to know if the 'codebase' and 'classid' attributes are still needed for QT playback on a Windows box if the object tag is set up to play the movie in the QT Player instead of the browser window? I have no way of checking this as I have no access to Windows from here. I want to get rid of it so that I can get rid of the embed tag (which is non-standard). The presence of codebase and classid kills playback in Firefox windows (on a Mac at least) unless embed is present. I'd be prepared to forgo playback in the browser window if this would work.

  • Fast Start not so fast?

Carefully followed instructions for "Preparing a Movie for Fast Start". Uploaded the 5Mb file to my Web server and mailed the link to a friend. Friend says it took two minutes to start? I thought this was supposed to "stream". Any thought on where to look for cause and solution?

I thought this was supposed to "stream".
No, it is the playback of media which begins as soon as the player estimates it has cached sufficient data to preclude the premature stopping of playback before reaching the end of the file. If the internet connection data throughput is consistent, the estimate is usually fairly accurate. However, if it varies drastically, playback may be interrupted frequently during playback.
Any thought on where to look for cause and solution?
Check the internet connection speed, ensure "Fast Start" option is embedded, and/or ensure you are using a multimedia compression format/player setting that does not force playback to delay until the end of the file is downloaded.
Friend says it took two minutes to start?
2 minutes for a 5 MB file does sound a bit excessive. I have a test 20 MB file that takes less than 2 seconds (emptied cache) to begin playback using my ISP. Here is the QTL file link if you want to test it for comparison: TEST FILE

  • Detecting Fast Start QuickTime Movies

Is there a tool, programming approach, or way to applescript the detection of whether a movie was saved with fast start or not?
And if so, is there a programming approach or way to applescript QuickTime to quickly set, or resave the file without needing to reencode the file?
I need to create a process where I can verify that files on my server are set to fast start and if not then set them. Please help.

Anything supposedly saved by QT in the "MOV" container automatically defaults to "Fast Start." If in doubt or using other QT containers, simply use the "Save As ..." file option to resave these files with "Fast Start" without re-encoding.

  • QuickTime 7.x - Progressive Download (Fast Start)

    Hello,
I have a MOV file that I want to make available on a web site. Currently when the user clicks it it simply downloads the full thing before it ever starts up Quicktime.
I read the documentation that says it must be created as a fast track via the quicktime software. I did this, but I get the same result.
Do I HAVE TO embed the player to get the progressive download ability? I want to to work just like WMV files from Microsoft where it opens up the media player and starts playing after buffering. I dont' really want to embed it in the page either.
    Thanks for your time.

If you don't use the proper html tags (object and embed) you'll get some wacky results.
"Virgin" PC viewers (those that have never opened a QT file) will probably get the option to "download" your .mov file. Or it may open in a new browser window as a window full of gibberish (MIME settings error).
Without the proper tags your file will never fast start because you're not sending the proper instructions to the QT plug-in.
The tags also allow you (the owner) to set some other properties in the file such as "autoplay" "target" and even allow you to display your movie at a different dimension than the original ("aspect").

  • Fast Start Quicktime Movies Wont Work

I dont know why Fast Start Quicktime movies wont work in iWeb. This exact same file I used in a site I created using Dreamweaver began the movie as soon as it reached a point where the entire movie could be viewed. Why not in iWeb?
    http://catchthemoment.net/simpsons/simpsons/Valentines.html
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

For whatever reason, iWeb publishes the quicktime movies with the autostart attribute at "false". To enable autostart, you will need to edit the html file after publishing and set the autostart attribute to "true". Even though autostart may have been enabled within the movie encoding process ("in the file"), I believe that this property is allowed to be overridden by the html attributes within which the file is published.
There is a table of all the attributes that can be changed floating around here somewhere. Keep in mind that these post-publishing changes that you might make will be overwritten in any subsequent changes that you might make to the page within iWeb.

  • QuickTime Fast Start Progressive Download not Working - Help!

I can't figure this out - I have a large number of training movies created by a contractor. After uploading them to my website, I thought QT would start once a certain amount of data was downloaded. So, being new to QT, I thought that the videos should be exported with the "Prepare for Internet Streaming." checked with either "Fast Start" or "Fast Start & Compressed Header" selected. Well, I tried both and no luck. File sizes are between 8 MB and 40 MB. I discovered another site that has a 80 MB file that starts no problem, so obviously I am missing something! Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Simon

    Thanks for your purchase, Simon.
You should look at the part of my PDF that discusses QuickTime Media Links. These are text based files that will download with a click on the link and then can control the QuickTime Player application.
Your Web page layout could remain the same with these .qtl links and your QuickTime files could enter "Presentation" mode (full screen, if you like). They will launch the QuickTime Player app as the tiny .qtl file has downloaded or the .qtl download is double clicked.

  • Fast Start

Is it possible to add fast start to an existing Quicktime movie withouth exporting it, and losing quality in the process.

With QT Pro you can use "Save As" and select the "Self-contained movie" option. That will reset Fast Start without re-encoding the movie. After that you should not further edit the file before putting it on the server, as editing is what defeats the fast start flag in the first place. You also can try this freeware drop box app that is supposed to carry out the reset fast start/save as self-contained operation on one file or a whole directory of files: Lillipot

  • Fast Start Failover has broken my Logical Standby and Flashback has not helped

    I have a primary ( PRIMARYP ), a physical standby ( STANDBYP ) and a logical standby ( STANDBYL ).
I configured Fast Start Failover ( with STANDBYP as the target ) and started an Observer. I did a shutdown abort on my primary and the Fast Start Failover did make STANDBYP the primary. I was able to reinstate PRIMARYP as a physical standby.
However when I checked my broker config it gave for STANDBYL
ORA-16795: the standby database needs to be recreated
Strange I though, since I would have expected STANDBYL to survive ok given that the new primary, STANDBYP was a physical standby of PRIMARYP.
Not to worry I thought, I simply will flashback STANDBYL to the beginning of the day and SQL APPLY will reapply all the redo.
This is where the problem begins

  • Hinted streaming, fast start and the results.

    Hi,
I put some clips onto a website recently, some were 5 min movies. I was pleased with the results, as the movies started almost immediately on several computers I tried.
Unfortunately, the client had to wait over 4 min to see the video. My video was compressed with hinted streaming.
So of course 4 min. seems like they downloaded the whole video before it started.
I have a web guy looking into if perhaps this could be a server issue with the customer, but I wanted to check if anyone has some insight to this.
I personally am not really clear on the "hinted vs faststart"
    Thanks
    Jeff

Hinted steaming is for streaming videos like the Apple's VideoKeynote presentations. For Example:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/appleevents/
Fast start is for progressive download of the video. For example:
    http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/
I have feeling your server is not a streaming server so you need fast start/progressive videos. A fast start video will begin to play after a few seconds while the video is being downloaded into the browser.
Open all your videos in Quicktime. Do a SAVE AS and save each video to a new folder. Doing this will activate (place back) the fast start in each video.
Send one video to the server for a test. Make sure your html embed code for the video has AutoPlay set to true.
(Steaming servers aren't cheap. If you click on the keynote presentation you'll notice that you can jump to anywhere in the video without having to wait for the video to load. Streaming videos don't download to you browser/computer, they stay on the server. Fast start/Progressive video download to you bowser/computer. Also streaming videos are one way to discourage people from downloading the videos. The only way to capture a streaming video is to use a screen capture program, Quicktime X has this capability.)
