Fast wi-fi but extremely slow wired broadband

Bit of a strange one here.
Forthe last 24 hours have had ridiculously slow connection via a wired ethernet connection on my PC, yet my wi-fi connection on my laptop, phone etc is still working at top speed.
Any ideas why this might be and what I can do to solve it?

I would also check that the driver for your pc network card is up to date from card manufacturer and not rely on windows update

  • Equuim P40-10X: WLan reception is very good but extremely slow

    Hi
I have just bought a Equuim P40 - when I connect it to wireless broadband the reception is very good but it is extremely slow when it comes to load the pages from the internet - any suggestions as to how to rectify this ?
    Thanks !

    Hi
Its not easy to say why the notebook loads the webpages slowly.
Mostly the websites load slowly because of the big data amount.
If the pages use any flash animations or there is a big traffic on websites the serve could be overworked and the sites loads slower.
Also if the antivirus software is enabled and controls every data transfer the websites could loads slowly.
As you see, many different factors can affect the page loading!

  • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-Bit) fresh install, only WLAN and video driver installed but EXTREMELY slow internet connection...

I recently checked my internet connection on my Asus G53SW and found that it was extremely slow on both the LAN and WLAN connections. I checked with a different laptop (old HP Pavilion) and I get a steady 74mbps+ connection using the same LAN cable and
also with the WLAN connection. My ISP has checked their side and everything is fine.
To try and resolve the issue I tried uninstalling, disabling and tweaking various software and even tried safe mode with networking, all to no avail. I then decided to do a complete fresh install this afternoon. I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
successfully onto my SSD and everything went smoothly. I have now only installed Nvidia video drivers and the (only) WLAN driver from the Asus support site.
My WLAN connection remains incredibly slow (amost half what it is on the HP and my MacBook Pro). Clearly this is an issue with either the Asus laptop or Windows but I don't know how to proceed in order to eliminate which it could be other than to try a different
    o/s to W7-Ult.
Can anyone help who knows more about this than me? Perhaps someone who has had a similar or the same problem because this is giving me a severe headache!
Thanks in advance to all and for any advice.

    if(null != object) object.Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url); }; </script>

Thank you for responding. As I stated in my original post the reason I went through this process was because of an extremely slow internet connection from both the WLAN and LAN connections on my G53SW. At that time I had all of the correct drivers on the
machine. Whilst I would agree that with the machine only having a video and WLAN driver it may well not be working 'optimally', the rationale for doing this was to get the machine working with the minimum of processes to show that it was not anti-virsu software,
Steam or the like causing interference.
I have changed out both of the HDDs this evening (a primary SSD and a secondary 1Tb HDD) for a clean hybrid 1Tb Seagate drive. Once I have installed all of the Asus drivers (and nothing else) I will try the speed test again and report back.
I can now report that with a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and ONLY Asus drivers as supplied the issue remains. On a connection where I should see around 75mbps I am actually getting around 18mbps, sometimes considerably slower. This only affects
    my Asus machine.

  • Fast download speed but very slow web browsing

    Hi all,
Ive had BT fibre optic installed as i could never watch netflix and browse on the internet at the same time on regular broadband. So when i run a speed test its showing 78mbs download with abouth 19mbs upload. However every page a go on is taking about 30seconds to open even google.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks simon

    hi
can you run the speed test again and post the screen shots. please run using ethernet cable.
http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/  after the first test run further diagnostics by entering phone number in top box.
    also run this https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html
i had similar problems when first installed due to contractor refusing to move my hub upstairs so i had to run on wifi.
even though at the time i was getting 30-40mbps it seemed slower than my previous 6mbps standard broadband.

  • Help! MacBook Pro only boots in Safe Mode and runs extremely slow (bonus: happened in Brazil and there are no Apple stores here - I need you guys!)

It's a MBP mid 2010. Last year it had some problems and an Apple authorised shop changed the HD and upgraded the OS from Snow Leopard to Lion. After that it seemed fine. Recently it started getting very slow and apps (e.g. Chrome, Flash) would crash. At some point it seemed stuck so I gave it a hard shutdown - bad idea. After that it would only boot in Safe Mode. I ran repar disk and repair permissions from the Disk Utility and it booted normally again but extremely slow. I upgraded to OS X 10.8.2, but didn't solve it. I tried booting with Command D to have a hardware diagnostic - it wouldn't boot and now it only boots in Safe Mode.
All data is backed and I have an external HD (but not an OS X Disc). Ready to anything. Help please!

Also you can perform #1 and #2 as these occur before Safe Mode, so you just reboot again with Shift key if you need to enter Safe Mode again.
At this point it sounds like your hard drive is dying or some sort of other hardware issue which I can only advise this.
Try to install OS X on a external drive and boot from it, if it's fine then you know your internal boot drive is dying.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
You can replace your internal drive yourself.
OtherWorld Computing is pretty good about providing drives and tool kits to perform that function yourself.

  • Pages runs extremly slow

    I am using a powerbook 17", 1.67 GHZ, 1.5 GB RAM with 10.4.2.
Pages is excellent but extremely slow. When placing a table or a graphis, it takes seconds for changing on letter. Same when moving a graphic on the side to her right place. Sometimes when clicking on a object to move it, we still have to wait 10 - 15 seconds.
We like pages and the great user interface. But the speed makes it impossible for using it in the whole company. Can anybody help?
    Thanks a lot
PS: all other programs are running fine and quick.

One of the things which is slowing pages down for you is the wrapping.
What I have done in the past, while making templlates, is to use the layout feature for the majority of the text flow if a page has a graph or large image in it. Rather than have the program wrap the text with the precious cycles on my 800Mhz G4 ibook, I preformat the text layout. If you are making a large number of pages in your documents where the graphic is in the same spot then try building a layout for the text and then placing the graphic, table or other element where the page is 'empty'.
A hint is to use the upper part of the page for your images and stuff. It iss easier to have the text start lower down the page since it can be a bit difficult dictatin where the text will stop on a page.
Another thing is if you have been using the program for a while, save the document. This will commit the version of the document to the hard drive instead of having the revisions and text sitting in memory. It's also a good habit to get into.

  • MacBook Pro 13" extremely slow, help!

I bought the mac last summer (2012) and it's been flawless up until a short while ago. It's an i5 with 4gig ram and 500 HDD.
Of the two USB ports, the one closest to me stopped working less than a month ago (this is not the issue I want help with though, just mentioning it as it might be related somehow). A week later, I upgraded to Mavericks and everything remained the same. Computer was fine (except the usb port), then one night the computer crashed while I was using a music production program (which I've been using daily since I got the mac).
This is when the mac started going slow.
Starting the computer up now took 4-5 minutes and there was no point trying to open an application. I managed to back everything up (though it took about 15 minutes just to select all files, then two-three hours to move them to the external drive) and started the process of reinstalling OS X. I formatted the drive, which was a fairly quick process. Installing OS X however, took about 12-13 hours! So yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the hard drive.
After OS X was installed, the computer was faster than before but still slower than pre-Mavericks. Even though I just formatted everything, I decided to repair permissions on the drive and it repaired 4 errors. It didn't make the computer much faster though. I can however use the computer now, but it is still laggy and sometimes slow. Booting up the computer now only takes 1-2 minutes.
So what do you guys think? Is it definitely a hardware problem or is there something I haven't done that might fix it? As I said it's faster than before I reinstalled the OS X but I still won't be able to use a music production app, it is too slow for that.
    I appreciate any answers!

    1. Go to Finder> Click on "Go" from Menu Bar at the top of the Computer Screen> Select Computer from Drop Down Menu> Select Macintosh HD> Select /Library Folder> Select Caches Folder and Move it to Trash
    2. Go back to "Go" in the Menu Bar at the Top of the Screen> Hold the Option Key on the Keyboard and select the Library Folder that appears under Home in the Drop Down Menu> Select Caches Folder and Drag to the Trash and select Merge

    You can try:
    - Reseting the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
-Resetting network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network settings.

I also tried some other sites but all's fast.
    Anybody have any ideas?
    Appreciate!

    On the one that's slow...
Go to Safari > Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If it's not an extension issue, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Qui then relaunch Safari to test. If Safari speeds up, move that .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
Empty the Safari cache more often. From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
If that doesn't help, back to the menu bar, click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons, click Reset.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For Lion:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

  • WiFi is Fast, But Ethernet Extremely Slow

On both my old 2008 24" iMac and my brand new 27" iMac, the Internet is extremely slow when the Ethernet cable is plugged in. When it's unplugged and I'm on WiFi, it's lightning quick.
When I'm on Ethernet, even retrieving text-only emails from Mail is painfully slow, as if I'm on dial-up. Web pages that are light on graphics take forever to load, regardless of browser. Safari, Firefox, Chrome, doesn't make a difference.
It's not all the time, sometimes it's very quick, but most of the time it's so slow it's unusable.
Some things I've tried on my own:
New Ethernet cable - no difference
Plugging into different ports on cable modem - no difference
Unplugging cable modem, waiting a couple minutes, plugging back in - no difference
Had the cable company out, they checked everything and saw nothing wrong on their end
Plugged my wife's Windows laptop into the modem - web pages load very quickly
I added a DNS address to System Preferences > Network - no difference
When I go to a website such as Speedtest.net, it routinely shows 60-70 Mb/s download (I'm paying for 60). Even if I'm on Ethernet, it may take forever to actually load the Speedtest page, but once I do and hit "Test", it comes back with at least 60 Mb/s.
System specs are as follows: Late 2013 27" iMac, 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GM RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 4 MB graphics card, 1 TB fusion drive.
Based on everything I've tried above, I don't think it's the modem or the cable company, but something in the Mac. When I got the new computer, I transferred everything from the old via Time Machine. I'm hoping I didn't transfer some obscure setting that is preventing the Ethernet from running at its full potential...
Any suggestions would be most welcome - thank you!

  • MacBook connects to Internet fast but iMac is extremely slow

When I bought my new MacBook Intel CoreDuo and connected wirelessly, the connection on my old iMac G5 Intel CoreDuo has become extremely slow. I can't even run software updates on it! My work Windows PC connects superfast to the same wireless router, and after trying many suggestions on the forum's posts, I am getting nowhere near resolving my issue. I can swear I am using the same settings on both Mac's although, as suggested in one of the posts, I have changed the location on my iMac. Please help!

    Hi Uzma,
As you mentioned, it works perfectly in Safe mode with Network. It might be caused by some third-party software or service. I would like to suggest you perform a Clean Boot to confirm it:
How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Meanwhile, run Internet Explorer 11 in No Add-ons mode by running the Run command from the Start menu, and then typing
    iexplore.exe -extoff into the box.
    2.Check if the issue persists.
If yes , open Internet Explorer for the desktop, click the Tools menu, and click
    Manage Add-ons.
3.Click Toolbars and Extensions, click each toolbar or extension, clicking
Disable to turn off all of the browser extensions and toolbars.
4.Restart Internet Explorer 11. Go back to the Manage Add-Ons window and turn on each item, one-by-one.
After you turn each item back on, see if Internet Explorer crashes or slows down. Doing it this way will help you identify the add-on that's causing Internet Explorer to crash.
After you've figured out which add-on was causing the problem, turn it off until you have an update from the manufacturer.
In addition, loading image and script indeed take more time than blank webpage.

SSRS 2008 R2 is extremely slow.  The query runs in less than a second in the dataset designer but if you try to view the report it takes over 10 minutes.  I have read this is a bug in SSRS 2008 R2.  We installed the most recent patches and
service packs.  Nothing we've done so far has fixed it and I see that I'm not the only person with this problem.  However I don't see any answers either.

    Hi Kim Sharp,
According to your description that when you view the report it is extremely slow in SSRS 2008 R2 but it is very fast when execute the query in dataset designer, right?
I have tested on my local environment and can‘t reproduce the issue. Obviously, it is the performance issue, rendering performance can be affected by a combination of factors that include hardware, number of concurrent users accessing reports, the amount
of data in a report, design of the report, and output format. If you have parameters in your report which contains many values in the list, the bad performance as you mentioned is an known issue on 2008 R2 and already have the hotfix:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2276203
Any issue after applying the update, I recommend you that submit a feedback at https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/
If you don’t have, you can do some action to improve the performance when designing the report. Because how you create and update reports affects how fast the report renders.
Actually, the Report Server ExecutionLog2  view contains reports performance data. You could make use of below query to see where the report processing time is being spent:
After you determine whether the delay time is in data retrieval, report processing, or report rendering:
    use ReportServer
    SELECT TOP 10 ReportPath,parameters,
TimeDataRetrieval + TimeProcessing + TimeRendering as [total time],
    TimeDataRetrieval, TimeProcessing, TimeRendering,
    ByteCount, [RowCount],Source, AdditionalInfo
    FROM ExecutionLog2
    ORDER BY Timestart DESC
Use below methods to help troubleshoot issues according to the above query result :

my final cut is running extremely slow after having for 6 months.  I use external hard drives and save nothing on my computer.  it takes a long time to render now. do you think something is wrong with computer. took it to mac store but they fail to help me.  I have a 13 inch mac book pro 10.6.8 8gb 2.3 gfz intel core i5

What did Apple tell you about what they did (or did not) find here?
See if working on the main disk is any faster.
USB2 is glacial, as I/O interconnects go.  And USB2 disks have been known to fail, or sometimes to drop back to USB1 speeds, too.  FireWire 800 is substantially faster than USB2, but still not as fast as the internal drive connections can provide.
Put another way, start varying your configuration, and see which configuration changes (still) have the problem, and which don't.
