Fast wired, slow wireless

When I connect my PC to the router via a network cable, I get 90 Mbps downloads. When I connect the same PC via wireless, I get 15 - 20 Mbps downloads.I turned off security to see if that helped - no change. When I view the network status for my wireless, it shows:Signal Quality is 5 bars solid.Speed is listed at 300 Mbps. What should I be looking at in order to increase my wireless speeds ? TIA

Those are the old freebie routers that used to be given out.  As EG said, you might want to invest in a more recent model with more horse power.  Those were great litle routers at teh time though, they out perform most of the gateway routers!

  • Wired - SLOW / Wireless - FAST (WRT54G v.6 issue)

    Hello,
We have a WRT54G v.6 wireless router and Verizon DSL with Windows XP.  Four computers total make use of this router to access Internet.  All computers are very new and in great condition.
3 computers connect to Internet wirelessly (laptop #1, laptop #2, desktop #1).
1 computer connects to Internet via a wired connection with the router (desktop #2).
When download speed tested on http://infospeed.verizon.net, desktop #2 download speed is significantly slower than all three wireless connections (300 Kbps instead of 1.5 Mbps).
When wireless connection is disabled on laptop #1 and wired connection between router and laptop #1 established, download speed still tests to 1.5 Mbps rather than 300 Kbps.  To me, this demonstrates that our DSL service and router are working as they should.
I decided to reinstall/upgrade the router's firmware, just in case.
I tested a couple different ethernet cables, just in case.
I dusted all my ports with a can of compressed air.
I tried using each of the four different ethernet ports on the router.
I disabled and then enabled Windows firewall, just in case.
I then updated the drivers for the "Intel Pro/100 M Network Adapter" (ethernet card) on desktop #2.
Problem seems to be related to desktop #2 's Intel Pro/100 M Ethernet card—either its settings or hardware—or to the interaction between router and Ethernet card.  After all, when a wired connection between the router and a different computer is established, the internet speed is ideally fast.  Plus, all wireless connections are equally ideally fast.  It's just when I try to make a wired connection to this one computer, desktop #2, that I get a less than ideal result.
Any hints about how to bump the Internet speed of desktop #2 up to 1.5 Mpbs like all of our other computers would be appreciated. =)

well...as the wired connection works fine with the laptop , the problem can be isolated to the desktop....the mtu settings on the router is not a probelm as well....the only solution i can think at this moment is downloading TCP optimizer adn run it.....this will adjust the mtu settings on the NIC card....you can give this a try...to download it , click here ...

  • E3200 Wired too Slow / Wireless Fast???

    Hi.
I have a E3200 Router and when the computers are connected directly to router (Wired) the speed is SLOW and  when computers are connected via wireless the speed is fast (normal). What can i do to have the wired computer with same fast speed as wireless?....i'm i missing something?
    Here are the speed results:
All wired computers connections (total of 4) downwload speed ranging from 8 Mbps to 13 Mbps.
All wireless computer connections download speed stable at 49 Mbps.
    Can someone please help?
    Thank you

Seems to be an issue with numerous E3200. This problem has been reported many times now. Call Linksys support and get it replaced and hope the replacement works better...

  • Macbook Pro/linksys wrt54g slow wireless/wired network connection solution.

I was pulling my hair out looking for a solution for this and it did not seem anyone had too much luck here. Hopefully this will help you all...
    Setup:
    - Macbook Pro, Mac mini, 2 windows boxes (not mine), 1 linux box
    - Linksys WRT54G v6 with dd-wrt installed. This solution should work with the standard WRT54G firmware.
    Symtoms:
    - All other computers performed fast on internet speed tests and on network transfers.
    - Macbook Pro Internet connection was slow (40KB/s on both the wired and wireless network using wpa)
    - Macbook Pro internal connection was slow (2MB/s on both the wired and wireless network using wpa)
Things I tried to resolve this:
    - Disable IP v6 (no effect)
    - Set DNS Servers field to the dns servers as reported by the router. (Increased the initial speed but this quickly decreased making it useless... not to mention impractical)
    Thing that resolved my issue.
    - Disabled STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) on the router. In the DD-WRT it is towards the top of the Setup tab. I'm not sure where it is on the default firmware sorry.
    Hope this helps someone

You're right - there are a lot of issues about MBP WiFi. I think there's a major problem with it.
If there was a ..."major problem with it" you would see more complaints than wifi just being among the top 10 discussion items in a trouble shooting forum. There are millions of MBP users many of whom, like myself, use wifi every day without issue.
Your statement "They exchanged it for a new machine. Worked fine in the store - but when I got it home, I was still getting very slow speeds." would lead one to suspect maybe interference from some source or a configuration issue rather than a "major problem".
You probably already tried changing the channel, resetting your router, changing the security scheme, elimination possible sources of interference, separating your components (router, computer, external monitor, ...), etc. but maybe starting over with a default configuration will help isolate the problem.

  • Infinity and PS3 slow speeds wired or wireless.

Hello,  wondering if anyone can help ive tried connecting my ps3 with both wired and wireless connections and either never give me more than 5mb download speed or upload.
I have put the ps3 in the DMZ and even tried connecting using my pc as a proxy server. My PC which is connected by wired as well does actually get 76mb regularly.
I used to get at least 8mb with standard broadband.
Also my phone (xperia arc) gets about 18mb.
I have tried different times of day with just the ps3 connected and no difference. Im lucky to get 2mb on ps3 on most occasions.

Its far more likely that the PS3 is not capable of any faster speeds, after all, it s a games console with dedicated graphics chipsets, so the CPU may simply not run that fast.
The actual speed could be simply be restricted by the PS3 network interface, as 9Mbs would be quite fast enough for access to remote servers, whose speed is going to be only a fraction of that per user.

  • Slow wired and wireless connections on new Mac Pro

I have a new 6-core Mac Pro with 64GB RAM that I seem to be having major network issues with. When I restart or first switch the machine on it's fine but after a few minutes the network (web browsing) become painfully slow - when I run a speed test it come out at ~2Mbit/s. This is the same whether I connect on a wired or wireless connection. I've tried various connections including a complete bypass of my time capsule to a direct wall connection that should be giving 100Mbit/s. When i run a speed test on my iPhone connected to the time capsule via 5GHz I comfortably get >60MBit/s.
Is there a bug in the latest OS 10.9.4 my MBAir also seems to require a lot of restarting to keep up even basic web browsing???

Your Macs are always looking for a better connection. To that end, they are evaluating every possible way to get to the Internet.
It is very important that you limit those choices to only the ones you actually want to connect to, and indicate that the other are "off the list", literally.
For example, to test your wired network connection, Ethernet must be at the top of the list AND WiFI must be OFF. (Otherwise, your Mac will be checking WiFi to see if it seems to be getting a better connection over WiFi. In the screenshot below, Ethernet is at the top of the list, so it is likely to be used, but since WiFi is still ON, it may be used instead.
To check YOUR WiFi connection (and not your neighbors' connections), you need to BOTH check that the "ask to Join new Networks" box is checked:
and that the Networks you wish to join are shown in the order you wish to join them. All extraneous networks should be removed from this list:

  • Slow Wireless, Fine Wired

I have BT Infinity Option 1, from April 2011
My wireless has been on the fritz lately, giving intermittently very slow speeds. About half an hour ago the BT Speed Tester Lite (Beta ) (I use this as the 'proper' one keeps giving me an error and will not let me use it) was showing a speed of 1.0mbps.
I restarted the hub, the speed went to approximately 5.0mbps. Ten minutes later it is down to 0.29mbps. Both speed tests were identical on various other third party testers. My wireless hardware is fine, when it works normally I get around 17 (expected max for a non-n wireless connection). This problem has happened before and the speeds come back to normal after being variable (but very, very low) for a few days or so but it is very frustrating to have regular <1.0mbps connection speeds when I expect closer to 20.0mbps (and pay for 40mbps)
When I connect by ethernet I get 37-39mbps, which is the expected maximum for my package/account so it is unlikely to be a line problem. I do not believe there is a wireless fault on my computer hardware given that it normally and regularly connects at its maximum speed.
My home hub is type 'A' (and an early one as I was an early adopter in April 2011), Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.57.1.3 (Type A). Could I have one of these faulty type A hubs I hear a lot about?
Also, how is it that I can't use the official speed test? This is frustrating as it would appear it's the only one BT care about or listen to.
Re-ran BT speed tester lite beta, result = 0.79mbps. This is ridiculous, I would get better speeds on normal broadband. The problem has happened before and resolved after a few days but is clearly well below acceptable speeds, almost 1/100th of what I'm paying for.
Anyone able to help or advise?

My post clearly indicates that I know the difference between wired and wireless, even the post topic says this.
My wired line speed is fine and dandy. (37-38mbps). My wireless speed is 0.3mbps. This is the problem. It has happened before and resolved after a few days, most of the time my wireless is in the range expected (17mbps being a G connection).
My main question is regarding the hub. I have a very early type A hub, is it likely to be part of the bad batch or faulty ones I have read about briefly here?

  • Linksys E1500 slow linespeed wired or wireless

My linespeed drops to about half when I connect my Cable Modem to the E1500. Using the same port and cat cable the speedtest gives 19.6 mbs but after plugging into the E1500 using the same PC connected to the 10/100 port it drops to 8.6, wired or wireless. There is no reason for the speed to drop by half can anyone shed some light on how to fix?

  • Wired vs Wireless backup

I'm starting to hate this thing. After my slow wireless backup attempt, 9 hours to get 1/13 of my hd, I plugged in to the TC ethernet directly. It backed up the entire drive in less than 4 hours. But I bought this for wireless backup, so I unplugged and turned my airport back on. Time Machine wouldn't run. I told it to backup now, and it started all over!! Erased my 83Gb file and now it's "Preparing backup".
I can't leave my laptop sitting undisturbed for 8 days to backup. This is really annoying.

    No interrupts.
I've let all the backups sit undisturbed. When the first wireless backup was so abysmally slow, I deleted it and started the wired BU fresh with a clean disk. As I say, it went fine then wouldn't connect wirelessly and when I clicked backup now, it started a whole new file from scratch and wouldn't access the wired bu file. It did corrupt the wired bu file in some way as I couldn't access it either after that. I've now deleted everything and started over with a new wireless bu. Again it's at 500mb/hr. I can't leave my laptop undisturbed for 168 hours for the initial bu.
I've quit all apps that access the net with no increase in speed. Nothing running in the background.
At other times my Internet access, other than the bu, is blazing fast. The N really runs well.
I used istat to check my network speeds, I'm sending several GB/hour to the TC but the backup is only recording a small fraction of it. I suspect there is a problem with the driver or the hd, but I would have thought that would have affected the wired bu as well.
Pulling hair out now, and I have little left.

I have a new Macbook Air 2012, Apple TV 2 and I have tried wired and wireless connections both still result in stuttering during video airplay to the ATV2.
I have even bought a new Airport Extreme Router just to confirm it is not the router and it still didn't help.
I have brought all items in the same room with wired connections and still same issue.
I was thinking maybe ATV 3 might help since it has 2 wifi antennas and faster processor.
Have tried everything I could think of.
This was one of the main reasons I bought a Macbook Air for this airplay feature. Very frustrated.
Any thoughts; any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the suggestion.
I also disabled Norton Firewall and restarted the Air and Now I'm able to use Air Play.
I know that the Apple remedy said that to do that in the support article, but I totally forgot I had that enabled..
It actually works. I can even stream to the Apple TV now through my MacBook Air.
BTW, Go into setting under the ATV, and click on update...you'll see that there was another update avaialble for the last gen of ATV...
It does have to restart twice..I guess once to download and and nother to apply.

  • Can i do this? (wired and wireless at the same time?)

    Hi all
My first time on these boards, Iam hopefully setting up a wireless network at home very soon. At the moment I have a cable modem that is 'hard wired' directly into my G5 imac that has no wireless cards installed. simple (so far)
Now... Iam getting a laptop very soon and wish to go wireless roaming the house etc so i will purchase an airport extreme at the same time.. is it possible to have my laptop on wireless and the G5 'hard wired' from the airport station providing 2 connections at the same time one wireless, one hard wired?
If not, what kit do i need to make this happen? apart from a wireless card for the G5 which id rather not do as id like that connection 100% stable and as fast as the 10mb will go..
Any help and advice would be appreciated.

The default settings of the AEBS works with most cable modems without any configuration changes needed.
The AEBS is a NAT router, meaning that it will be "seen" by your ISP as a single device. In turn, the AEBS will distribute private IP addresses, on the local network, to all of the computers connected to it (wired or wirelessly) because it has a built-in DHCP server. So in this case, each of your computers would be assigned an unique IP address.

  • WRT600N slow wireless speeds

I have a WRT600N router.  I have one PC that is connected to the router via a wired connection.  I also have an iPad (3rd generation) that is connected to the router via a wireless connection. On my PC, I went to speedtest.net and determined that I am receiving like 20MB downloads via the wired connection.  However, my iPad only gets approximately less than 2 MB download speeds.  I have tried reseting the router and I do have what I believe to be the latest firmware update (Firmware Version: 1.01.36 build 4).     I also receive the slow download speeds when I try connecting the other wireless devices.  I assume my problem has to do with some sort of configuration setting found in the router configuration page (http://192.168.1.1/).  Can anyone please advise me what to do?  The router is only a few feet away from my iPad so the signal strength is strong.  I just don't understand why I'm receiving such slow wireless download speeds.
    Solved!

This suggestion did not work.  I tried to isolate the problem by optimizing the router's wireless settings. I used the 2.4GHz, set the radio band to standard 20Mhz then set the standard channel to 9. The laptop had the same slow wireless speeds as the iPad did.
This may be due to the IPv6 feature on your computer. One of the solutions may be disabling IPv6. If the issue still exist after performing this step and download speed is fine when connected straight to the modem then reset reconfigure could work, just use WPA2 for the security with AES and a fixed channel for wireless.

  • One Solution for Fixing Slow Wireless Connection

Quick and easy solution for slow wireless connection.
My hardwired PC connection was working fine over FIOS, but my wireless connection through my Macbook Pro was soooo slowwww, although the machine itself was fine. Pages would take forever to appear, then finally sort of pop up. Didn't really seem to be a Mac problem, just a connection problem.
After searching forever to find a fix, I found a quick & easy solution that works at least for now: change your DNS address.
I'm not a techie so I don't know ALL of the implications of doing this, but in desperation, it has worked for me and I think at no risk to your network or machine. Changing my DNS address has made my connection blazing fast and relieved many weeks of frustration.
HOW: I can only share how to change on a Mac. (Please chime in if you can give directions for PC. ) Just go to this Apple support page, which will outline exactly how to do it. I used 4.2.2.2, I think you can also use 4.2.2.1 as the DNS address. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2002
    Other resources I've found follow:
    (specific to FIOS):  http://www.stationstops.com/2008/04/16/high-speed-internet-3-tips-to-optimize-your-verizon-fios-broa...
    (Specific for Mac): http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=358919
Maybe this is a commonly-known fix but it wasn't for me, so hopefully it will help some of the other less-than-technical people out there. Good luck!

Actually this is a common problem with Mac OSX (http://rubyisbeautiful.com/2008/2/8/osx-dns-fix-update) and how it does DNS lookups and pertains to routers that provide the internal gateway (i.e. 192.168.1.1) as the DNS address which is what the ActionTec does by default.
You can change that at the router level to either push out Verizon's dns that the router then uses or any other open dns server.  I had to do this a long time ago for some of the OS X boxes on my network.

  • Macbook Air Extremely Slow Wireless

    Hello All,
Got my brand new MB-Air and from the get-go noticed extremely slow wireless performance. I did a bit of digging and here is what I found.
The MB-Air works OK with cheap (consumer) wireless APs, however when used in conjunction with the commercial APs most of which use the Atheros chipset the performance is horrible. I found that when connecting to APs that use Atheros' commercial chipset, the MB-Air connects with 802.11 G specs instead of N even when the signal metrics are excellent such as -39 RSSI.
Moreover, even With the 802.11 G connection at 54Mbps the performance is both sluggish and latent. Small file transfers have a 50/50 shot at working and large file transfers seem to die reliably. Albeit this could be an issue with Apple's implementation of SMB / Samba which is rather poor.
I have tried to turn off Bluetooth to see if my experience is different. We'll see.
I would be interested in feedback from people who are also experiencing the same poor wireless performance to learn the chipset of the AP they are having issues with.
By-the-way -- I will take a fix, if someone has come up with one. However my guess is that this is an engineering issue that Apple has to fix.
    BP

Sitting side-by-side, my MBA was averaging less than 1 Mb/s on downloads, and my MBP more than 9 Mb/s. The MBP was fully ten times faster. As you can imagine, viewing videos was a ragged, unpleasant experience on the MBA.
I'm using an early wireless-N Belkin router, so it didn't show up on airport utility, thus i couldn't change channels there as proposed on this thread. But to isolate the problem, at my brother's suggestion i took both computers to a Starbucks, and observed the two computers downloading there at equal speeds. So clearly the problem wasn't with my MBA, but my router.
I went to Belkin's website to figure out how to change channels on the router, and checked for firmware updates. There was one, so i figured I'd do that before attacking the "changing channels" task. I upgraded the firmware, and with that simple fix my MBA is happily zipping along now with >9 Mb/s downloads, same as the MBP. More than TEN times faster than before. My iPhone download speeds increased more than tenfold, too.
My advice, if you're having wireless problems with your MBA: First make sure your router's running the latest firmware.

Your will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the TIme Capsule to clear out the current network settings and then reconfigure it to "join" your wireless network using the AirPort Utility setup application.
To perform the Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule....
Pull the power cord from the back of the device
    Wait a few moments
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule and keep holding it an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power cord back in to the Time Capsule
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 25-30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
    On your Mac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Continue
Follow the guided setup and choose the "join" option when it appears duriing the setup
You will need to know the exact type of wireless security that the Belkin router is using to enter this information during the setup of the Belkin. Otherwise, the Time Capsule cannot join the network, and you will receive an error message after the configuration process.
