Faster bus and bigger cache in the 3.0 GHz?

In Bare Feats test (http://www.barefeats.com/quad06.html) of the Mac Pro 3.0 they say "The 3.0GHz Mac Pro's 20% faster clock speed, larger L2 cache, and faster system bus enables it to muscle through these two non-optimized apps."
Hopefully I'm misreading this as they seem to know what they're talking about.
For me, if the clock speed is the only thing that is different then it's not worth the $800. Bus and cache too? That could be a different story.
Could someone please confirm that the bus and L2 Cache are the same for the 2.66 and the 3.0 before I get buyer's remorse (yes, I haven't even got my MP yet) and wish I went for the 3.0 over the 2.66?
Mac Pro 2.66 soon   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

They are the same.

About the only thing that "might" be able to do is upgrade the SSD. OWC sells SSD upgrades for that unit. You would have to contact Apple though to verify that no warranty issues would apply when making the upgrade.

  • Foundation 2013 Farm and Distributed Cache settings

We are on a 3 tier farm - 1 WFE + 1APP + 1SQL - have had many issues with AppFab and Dist Cache; and an additional issue with noderunner/Search Services.  Memory and CPU running very high.  Read that we shouldn't be running Search
and Dist Cache in the same server, nor using a WFE as a cache host.  I don't have the budget to add another server in my environment.
I found an article (IderaWP_CachingFormSharePointPerformance.pdf) saying "To make use of SharePoint's caching capabilities requires a Server version of the platform." because it requires the publishing feature, which Foundation doesn't have.
So, I removed Distributed Cache (using Powershell) from my deployment and disabled the AppFab.  This resolved 90% of server errors but performance didn't improve. Now, not only I'm getting errors now on Central Admin. - expects Dist Cache
    - but I'm getting disk operations reading of 4000 ms.
    Questions:
    1) Should I enable AppFab and disable cache?
    2) Does Foundation support Dist Cache?  Do I need to run Distributed Cache?
    3) If so, can I run with just 1 cache host?  If I shouldn't run it on a WFE or an App server with Search, do I have to stop Search all together?  What happens with 2 tier farms out there?
    4) Reading through the labyrinth of links on TechNet and MSDN on the subject, most of them says "Applies to SharePoint Server".
    5) Anyone out there on a Foundation 2013 production environment that could share your experience?
Thanks in advance for any help with this!

That article is referring to BlobCache, not Distributed Cache. BlobCache requires Publishing, hence Server, but DistributedCache is required on all SharePoint 2013 farms, regardless of edition.
I would leave your DistCache on the WFE, given the App Server likely runs Search. Make sure you install
AppFabric CU5 and make sure you make the changes as noted in the KB for
    AppFabric CU3.
You'll need to separately investigate your disk performance issues. Could be poor disk layout, under spec'ed disks, and so on. A detail into the disks that support SharePoint would be valuable (type, kind, RPM if applicable, LUNs in place, etc.).

  • Fast Forward and Rewind keyboard shortcuts in Log and Capture

In FCP, I want to assign the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons (in the Log and Capture mode) to buttons on the keyboard. I've assigned the functions using the Keyboard Layout in the Tools menu but it doesn't seem to be working like it should. In Log and Capture when I use the mouse to press the Fast Forward button, FCP stops the miniDV deck and fast forwards the tape as fast as possible without showing any picture. However, when I invoke the keyboard shortcut I created all I get is the picture moving a few fames per second instead of the tape stopping and fast forwarding as fast as possible. The same happens with the Rewind keyboard shortcut as well. Any ideas as to why, and how I might be able to fix this?
The computer I'm currently working on is a Dual 2 GHz PowerMac G5, 2.5 GB RAM, Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Pro 5.0.4).

When I press the fast forward or rewind button while logging a miniDV tape the video stops and then the tape fast forwards or rewinds at a MUCH faster rate than L or J ever give me. That is the behavior I am trying to get from a keyboard shortcut.
Not possible via keyboard shortcuts, unfortunately.
Even if you map the Rewind and Fast Forward functions to keys in a Custom Keyboard Layout - for those who didn't know, yes, there are specific commands for those functions even though they are not mapped by default - those shortcuts will not within the L&C window. We're stuck pressing the buttons.
Forgot to mention: the only time you're able to invoke the true fast forward or rewind function is using Shift-I/O (that is, Go to In Point or Out Point). Of course that only works if you have the necessary In/Out point set...

  • ?Best OS X version for Power Mac Cube G4-I want to reformat and start again in the hope it will work faster.

Hi. I want to reformat and start again in the hope my G4 PowerMac Cube will work faster. So I'd like to know what the best version of Mac OS X is for the G4. Can anyone advise?  Many thanks.

Hi, the best for speed is the lowest OSX it'll run & still do what you need.
10.1.5 would run in 96MB of RAM, 10.2.x took twice as much, 10.3.x twice again, 10.4.x twice again, 10.5.x thrice again & better Video caards.
And those are minimums, twice that being fairly useful, 4 times that being pretty good.
I suspect 10.4.11 is going to be your "Sweet Spot", I wouldn't run 10.4 on PPC Macs with less than 1.5 GB of RAM, not on IntelMacs with less than 3-4GB of RAM.
OSX is very dependent on it's spped & usability by the speed & amount of free space on the HD.
So we know more about it...
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...

  • Iphone 4 battery draining fast and yellowish blobs on the screen

So I got my iphone 4 today. 32GB. Came home charged it full powered down for battery memory and left off for a few minutes like instructed.
I have not done much with the phone and I am already at 85% within an hour of using it for texting. maybe 30 texts so far. Wifi off, no tethering connection made, Brightness turned to max push every 15 minutes 3G on. For a battery that is 40%n bigger it is really draining fast.
Now I am noticing yellowish blobs on the right side vertically and a few on the top horizontally. I read in a post that it was because of not cured residue and should go away in a few days. DOES this make sense to you folks. Where does it say that on apples site.
I am about to call a tech about this and have them send me something in writing.
This is just frustrating as I was hoping for a great experience this year. From the let down from the white iphone to my battery being drained to now yellow blobs..man can anything else go wrong.
What say you??????? any of you have battery issues yet

If my past experience with iPhones and iPods is any indication, you'll find that over the next couple days as you use your iPhone the battery indicator will become more accurate. My habit (as I've done with my new iPhone 4) is to use it until the indicator shows red and then charge it fully and then do that twice more. At that point the indicator should be 'calibrated' with the battery and be more accurate. Yesterday I used my phone for about 5 hours before the battery indicator gave me 20% warning. Today I've used it as I normally would in a day and, as I always did with my G3S, I'm currently home from work with a 40% charge showing. Guess I'll have to play a little Angry Birds tonight
I've seen nothing official from Apple about the yellow splotches but I read either at Engadget or Gizmodo this morning that a worker experienced with this process claims it is the bonding adhesive which hasn't finished curing. It has been widely reported second hand. Don't know if contacting AppleCare this early in the game will get you anywhere. Since iPhones are in short supply at this time and you have a year's warranty, I'd wait a couple days and see if the report is correct. If the yellow defect goes away it was true.

  • CAN bus off fast recovery and slow recovery modes

    Hello,
I know that the busoff recovery procedure consists of monitoring the CAN bus until 128 sequences of 11 consecutive recessive bits have been observed.
But I want to know what is fast bus of recovery and slow bus of recovery.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Sagar Joshi

Where are you seeing the terms "fast bus off recovery" and "slow bus off recovery". As far as I know, the CAN spec defines just a single bus off recovery.

  • RAID and SSD Caching Notes for the W530

Here are some interesting compatibility and limitations issues I've encountered with the W530 on Windows 7 and 8 and Linux. To the point, a trio of SSD units may prove superior to two physical disks plus an mSATA SSD for several reasons outlined here.
Original goals: quick restore of a previous OS state, data resillience on the road, and use of Intel's SSD caching feature in RST (which is fully compatible with the Lenovo W-series).
Since there are several issues involved, you may want to consider adding the RAID option only after understanding these tradeoffs, which presumably still exist on latest products.
APS (active protection) does not work when RAID is in use. Show stopper! I really don't want a head crash even with a RAID 1 mirror. APS is an outstanding feature of IBM/Lenovo products and may give better overall data stability than running with a mirror in which case both heads might crash from a drop or jar, without APS. (Disks these days sometimes have their own APS built-in so that's worth considering as well.)
Intel's Rapid Storage caching solution requires RAID to implement on an mSATA cache. See #1.
Reverting to a previous OS image by splitting and reverting to a mirror is not fast. It's easier to break the pair and swap the disks but far easier solutions are available.
Documentation is sparse for the Intel RST product and Lenovo could help fill in the gaps.
Without Rescue and Recovery, which I've used in the past to revert to earlier OS builds, other backup/restore options are still required. It is VERY HELPFUL to have a product purchased with a Windows 8 license in the EFI firmware, so that rebuilds aren't a problem. If you experience rebuild issues, quickly contact Lenovo support for workarounds and solutions. I recommend testing a rebuild several times before putting your system into production.
On a related note, the APS feature is currently unsupported on Linux because of lack of documentation for the output stream of the positioning sensor in recent Lenovo products.
    Workarounds and Problems:
ExpressCache, which Lenovo provides, is simple to use as an alernative to Intel's RST-based caching.
Lenovo warns that ExpressCache is incompatible with TrueCrypt and BitLocker encryption.
FDE (full disk encryption) drives and FDE SSDs are presumably available as a workaround to #2.
I'm glad I have the RAID option under the hood, but I'm currently not using it. I would if I were on pure SSD storage, which does not require or benefit from APS. ExpressCache does seem to help boot up speed and overall performance, and doesn't appear to add any significant overhead.

I'd like to suggest an alternative caching product (not affiliated with them, but have used for a long while) by the name of eBoostr.
    What I like about it:
    - Mostly OS agnostic (runs on anything after 2000, including 2000 (!))
    - Chipset agnostic (runs on any chipset)
    - Device agnostic (accepts caching on RAM, SD, CF, USB, Intel's old Turbo Memory, anything that shows up as a drive)
    - GUI interface for excluding files you don't want cached (ignore downloads, music, etc.)
In short, there's virtually no restrictions on how, where, and what to use it with.
I think it works fine with TrueCrypt and BitLocker, but I'm not 100% sure.
What eBoostr doesn't do is sector-level caching, or write-caching. I use CleverCache to bump Windows' file cache size to improve write caching.

  • How to use PowerShell to find files created in the last 15 min and bigger than 5 KB

    Hi!
I am trying to write to a text file, the files created in the last 15 min and bigger than 5KB
I have created this PowerShell script but it's not working. Can somebody help me with this?
    $Notprocessedfiles = Get-ChildItem c:\test | where {$_.Lastwritetime -gt (date).addminutes(-15)}
    if ($Notprocessedfiles.lenght -gt 3KB)
    $Notprocessedfiles | Out-file c:\test\maybe.txt
    Thanks!

Do it the PowerShell way.  It is easier and faster.
    Get-ChildItem c:\test |
          Where-Object{$_.Creationtime -gt (date).addMinutes(-15) -AND $_.Length -gt 5Kb} |
          Format-Table -Auto |
          Out-String |
          Out-file c:\test\maybe.txt
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ok, sorry. And yes, I just restored my iPhone as new and tried to put all the songs on there before I even restored with my previous backup, but it still does the same thing... even when I just checked the option to sync only "selected music or videos". How's that possible?
P.S. After I tried syncing with checked songs only, nothing showed up under Music on my phone and this message popped up in iTunes: "The iPhone "..." could not be synced because the sync session failed to finish." If you could, please tell me what that means, thanks.

Which Mac Pro? More cores=slower speeds? And most of us know the speed matters or FPU for music and I don't understand the faster is for the least amount of procs. And while I get the whole rendering thing and why it makes sense.
The above is what the bar says. It's been a while and wondered, maybe Apple changed the format for forums. Then got this nice big blank canvas to air my concerns. Went to school for Computer Science, BSEE, even worked at Analog Devices in Newton Massachusetts, where they make something for apple.
The bottom line is fast CPU = more FPU = more headroom and still can't figure out why the more cores= the slower it gets unless it's to get us in to a 6 core then come out with faster cores down the road or a newer Mac that uses the GPU. Also. Few. I'm the guy who said a few years ago Mac has an FCP that looks like iMovie on Steroids. Having said that I called the campus one day to ask them something and while I used to work for Apple, I think she thought I still did as she asked me, "HOW ARE THE 32 CORES/1DYE COMING ALONG? Not wanting to embarrass her I said fine, fine and then hung up.  Makes the most sense as I never quite got the 2,6,12 cores when for years everything from memory to CPU's have been, in sets of 2 to the 2nd power.  2,4,8,16,32,64,120,256,512, 1024, 2048,4196,8192, 72,768.  Wow. W-O-W and will be using whatever I get with Apollo Quad.
Peace to all and hope someone can point us in THE RIGHT DIRECTION.  THANK YOU

I also noticed that the 8 core Mac Pro is 3.0 when in fact they do have a 3.4 8 core chip, so 2 =16? Would rather wait and have it done correct than released to early only to have it benchmarked in audio and found to be slower in a few areas- - - the logical part of my brain is wondering what else I would have to swap out as I am sure it would run, and fine for a while, then, poof....

  • How do you run to Drives on the same screen. I installed a ssd and a hhd to my mac but i can only view the content of the drive only if i boot of that drive. Im try to have my ssd for fast boots and hhd for my music, movies etc. Please help.

I installed a samsung 840 pro SSD to my primary slot and relocated my 1.5 TB HDD to a data double where my optical drive was. I transfered my apps and Mac OS X to my SSD for fast boots and all my itunes movies, music, Iphoto etc to my HDD. I rebooted off my SSD then seen all the data on my HHD itunes movies, music, iphotos etc i cannot view on my SSD. So my question is how do you view all the content on both the ssd and hdd on the same screen with having to boot off one or the other?

No, what I'm saying is that once you boot into OSX, you should be able to see both drives listed.  If you don't then either OSX is hiding the other drive because it sees it as a boot drive and is trying to protect the contents from novice users or there's another problem.  If it's the first thing (i.e. it's a protection thing), then your only option would be to boot into the old drive, copy off all your personal data to an external backup drive, then reboot into the SSD and go into Disk Utilities and wipe/reformat the second drive so that you can see it as a regular secondary drive.  Then when you see it as that, you can copy your data back to it.
Be carefull poking around in Disk Utility as you can easily lose your data.  It's possible the Mac just isn't mounting that second drive because it sees it as another boot drive.  Whatever you do, don't accidentally erase it without getting a copy of your data off of it because you obviously don't have that on your SSD now.
