Faster Lion to Windows VNC viewer?

I am trying to use my 2011 iMac (running most recent Lion build) to connect and work on my Windows system at work. I have TightVNC server running on my windows system at the office. I can get Lion's built-in VNC to connect, but it is really slow. I am getting tired of watching the constant screen redraw.
Are there any settings I am missing to speed this thing up, or is there a faster VNC viewer out there I should be using?

You may eventually use RDC client for Mac. It works pretty good.

  • TightVNC (or other windows VNC viewer) connecting to OS LION

Have been using TightVNC viewer on a windows based PC to connect to my iMac without any problems.
Upon upgrading to Lion, I am no longer able to connect to VNC.
When I connect, I get a gray screen with my username, prompting me for a password. I am unable to type or click, etc.
I understand there is a new protocol for connecting to VNC. I have no problems mac-to-mac or even iphone-to-mac , however, I am looking for a solution for pc-to-mac.
Does anyone know how to configure tightVNC to make this work? Can anyone recommend another software that would work?
    Thanks for any input
    Mike

We are having the same issue with our Lion. With the help of this thread:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1194456
We came up with a workaround:
    * Use RealVNC client
      - this uses the ZRLE encoding (which is what Lion VNC uses); TightVNC does not use it.
    Configure RealVNC client with:
    * Misc Tab
Uncheck "Shared connection (do not disconnect other viewers)
Uncheck 'Only use protocol version 3.3
    * Default Tab (Load/Save Tab)
      Save as default (click Save)
    * Now run VNC viewer and enter the password to authenticate.
    Caveats:
Screen Sharing seems to work but not remote management
Due to the new multiuser login with Lion, you'll need to log out of OS  before disconnecting to VNC. If you don't log out, you can't reconnect in.

  • Command key in Windows VNC viewers?

When using a vnc viewer under Windows to connect to a remote Mac, how do you do a command key (cloverleaf)?
What's your Windows vnc viewer of choice?

OK, so I'll answer my own question: it looks like th Alt key substitutes for the command key.

  • Accessing Xserve with Lion Server from Windows 7 PC via VNC Viewer

    Hello everyone-
At work we have an Xserve running Lion Server that we are trying to access from a Windows PC runnig Windows 7. We have turned on Screen Sharing on the Xserve and we are using RealVNC's VNC Viewer client to access the Xserve.
Everything works OK except the Control key is not being passed through to the Xserve, so you can't to teh usual copy/paste commands etc.
I have checked on the Web but found nothing to resolve this problem. The settings in the RealVNC client are set to pass through special keys, but it is as if the VNC server on the Xserve isn't seeing them.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Michael,
Thank you for clarifying the issue for us.
I am trying to involve someone familiar with this topic to further look at this issue. There might be some time delay. Appreciate your patience.
Thank you for your understanding and support.

  • How can I transfer a file from Lion to Windows 7

Hello everybody, I need to transfer a big file from mac Lion To windows 7. How can I do this task? thanks

    why use itermediary?
Apple does have some limited HFS read only under Windows, or the Paragon HFS driver (9.x) works very well also.
Of course read/write to/from the same hard drive is slower than disk to disk, as your disk has to keep repositioning the head.
Large files and USB... boy I think I'd go for something more robust and reliable and faster, like USB3 or FW400 at minimum.

macfriedchikkin's reply would make sense to you if you were trying to open a camera, but if you are trying to view streming media from a web site that is a different story. It helps to be very specific about what you are tyring to do on these forums.
I belive you would go into Firefox Preferences menu and tell it  to use VLC as the application to play WMV files. I'm still running Tiger,  however, so I can't tell you if it the latest version works wel that way. The Tiger version doesn't seem to, but a lot may have changed since then. (I'm only just getting around to installing Leopard next week now that there are too may apps I can't run on Tiger. ) Perhaps someone else on this forum can better help you set  up the player in your browser.
Or you can cut out the middleman and give VLC the direct video URL:
Choose Open File from the File menu and paste in the URL of the video, say,
    http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-1
    or http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-2
Your media should play this way. Dont forget to save the playlist for later.
I'l keep investigating on my end, and yes, I'm also  encouraging certain people who are streaming windows media in to switching to a different format

  • Launch Console fails: the vnc viewer is not installed on the manager server and no local vnc viewer is found.

    Hello,
I have created and started a VM image and try to configure this image, but when launching the console I get the error:
"the vnc viewer is not installed on the manager server and no local vnc viewer is found."
I've read the vnc console does not rely on a local version of the vnc client, but uses the java vnc.  From the java log I get:
    Java Web Start 1.6.0_43
Using JRE version 1.6.0_43-b01 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
    User home directory = C:\Users\kgraaf

    28-jun-2013 10:17:04 com.oracle.ovm.ras.proxy.external.ViewerLauncherFactory getViewerLauncher
INFO: Os is : windows 7
It is not clear to me yet what is expected to be running where. My configuration is:
    - VM Server 3.1 on Linux host A
    - VM Manager 3.1 on Linux host B
    - Connected via Windows 7 64-bit client via a browser to the Management Server. Let's call this host C
When launching the console it tries to connect to 127.0.0.1:60505 so to localhost and a port#.
    - Given this information I would expect it tries to launch the vncviewer from my management server (host B).
    - /usr/bin/vncviewer is installed on host B, but this appears not to be used.
    - We see java vnc is started on my Windows 7 client (host C) and it tries to connect to 127.0.0.1 (localhost on my Windows client??) and not to the remote management server (host B)!?
    Questions:
1 - Can someone explain what exactly is being executed (from where and to which host) when launching the console?
2 - Is this a java version / Windows 7 related configuration issue? How to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Klaas.

Per Oracle's website - RAN into this a few hours ago...Do it as ROOT on the VM Manager Host
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26996_01/E18548/html/BABFBEIF.html
It is preferred that you install either TightVNC on the Oracle VM Manager host computer. You can get the latest TightVNC package from:
    http://oss.oracle.com/oraclevm/manager/RPMS/http://oss.oracle.com/oraclevm/manager/RPMS/
    Install TightVNC with the command:
    # rpm -ivh tightvnc-java-version.noarch.rpm

  • Best Windows VNC client for talking to Mac Desktop

I am trying to display the screen of the secondary display of a Mac from a Netbook. Ideally, I want the functionality of the Mac "share screen" feature, in particular with this you can choose to view either one of the displays, or both together. Does anyone know of a Windows or Linux VNC client which does this? I have looked at a couple of clients (TightVNC and RealVNC) but they both show both displays in a horizontal scrollable screen. I'm also concerned about performance, in particular the impact on the remote machine i.e. the one using two screens. Are Windows VNC clients going to impose any more overhead than a remote Mac connected via "share screen".

About the external monitor, should a physical one be attached to ?
If not that would be nice to use it only w/ vnc
btw: I opened a thread on tightvnc tracker , see you there :

  • Connecting to Mac OS X with VNC-viewer, time out

every time I try to use a VNC-viewer on my PC to connect to my mac
I can connect once, then I lose the connection and I can't re-connect until both my mac and PC have been restarted.
though I never have problems connecting to other systems,
does anyone know how this can happen?
    I use a 100Mb/sec connection to connect to Mac OS X 10.5.8
from a PC with Windows 7 Ultimate RC, anyway I try to

    Try using Vine Server
    <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16699>
The built-in Mac OS X VNC server (aka Screen Sharing) does not play well with strangers.
The one thing that has sometimes helped is to make sure you are not trying to use "Reduced Colors". But failing that, get and install Vine Server (make sure it uses a different port from the build-in VNC server - try 5901).

  • Vnc viewer external access

using a Linksys E2500.  I have a Ubuntu "server" set up which i can access on my LAN through VNC Viewer (windows machines) no problem.  I can even access it through the external IP address on a machine inside the LAN (both internal address and external address work from inside the LAN).  I set up port forwarding (per portforward.com) but i still can not access my machine from outside the LAN.  It has a static IP as well btw.  Any help would be appreciated as I am leaving the country for a month and need to be able to access it while I'm gone.  Thank-you.

wait. DMZ entirely opens that specific client IP for outside access. this is a bit unsecure. port forwarding should just work if you already know the correct ports and you have a static IP.

  • Using numbers 2.3 how do i split windows to view more than 1 spreadsheet at a time?

using numbers 2.3 how do i split windows to view more than 1 spreadsheet at a time?

    Hi seth,
    Numbers vocabulary:
    Spreadsheets (aka: Document)
    contain one or more Sheets
on each of which may be placed one or more Tables
each of which contains one or more cells
each of which may contain either data or a formula.
Spreadsheets open in separate windows. Depending on the contents of each spreadsheet, and the scale at which you want to see it (and the size of your display), you can view more than one spreadsheet in the same manner as you can view more than one of any kind of document—open two documents in separate windows. Resize the windows to allow both to be viewed at the same time. Place and scale the individual documents to permit viewing the desired part of each
Sheets within the same document cannot be displayed simultaneously. You can make and open a copy of the document, then open and view both copies as described above, but this introduces new opportunities to edit the wrong copy. You could Copy a Table from one part of the document, open Preview and go File > New from Clipboard to create a PDF copy of that table (readable, but not editable), and view the spreadsheet and pdf documents as described above.
Tables can be rearranged, or have rows or columns (or both) hidden to permit simultaneous viewing of selected parts of both.
A Table can have Table > Freeze Header Rows and Table > Freeze Header Columns set to keep these rows/columns visible as the rest of the table is scrolled. Or can have a range of rows (or columns) hidden to allow viewing of rows (columns) adjacent to that range visible on the same screen.
Numbers does not support freezing of rows or columns other than Header rows and Header Columns.
    Regards,
    Barry

I just want to open the link. Grateful for advice.
