Fastest hardware for Solaris 8

What's the fastest UltraSparc machine available on which Solaris 8 will install, under say $8,000? "Fastest" in this case means total CPU speed. We need to continue supporting Solaris 8 for some of our clients, and we need to purchase some hardware that will support it. From what I've read, the new Niagara servers do not support anything under Solaris 10.
Thanks.

Among the current server models, consider the Sunfire V210, V240, or V440 systems.
They will run if installed with specific Sol-8 releases (or newer).
I have no idea as to pricing on them but the first two are probably in your budget.
No current workstation models will run on Solaris 8.
Among discontinued models, the Sun Blade 1500 and Sun Blade 2500 systems
would seem to be good candidates for your needs.

  • JRock Kit for Solaris 10 x86/x64

    Hi,
    Why don't exist a Jrock Kit distribution for
    Solaris 10 x86/x64?
    I have Bea 8.1, 9.2 for Solaris 10
    x86/x64 and now Oracle 10g Rel 2 and I don't understand why
    BEA don't release it.
    Thanx
    Giancarlo

    Porting JRockit to new OSes/architectures is very expensive, so we have to prioritize the porting effort based on customer interest, and there has been very little demand for JRockit on Solaris/x86. Most customers purchasing Sun x86 hardware use Windows or Linux.

  • Need Agent Installer for Solaris (SPARC)

    Hi All,
    I have downloaded Grid Control Agent Installer for Solaris from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/htdocs/agentsoft.html.
    When I tried to extract the zip file, I am getting the following error message.
    "Can not open file. It does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again."
    Even I tried using http://sac.us.oracle.com/download/index.html also but getting the same error.
    Please send me the location if you have,
    Thanks
    Sumathi

    Most commands are identical. Performance analysis, loading all are similar. Tape interaction, creation of tape devices is going to be pretty much the same.
    The differences show up a lot at the hardware level. HBAs aren't usually the same, many drivers (and their quirks) are different between the architectures. If you're debugging connectivity to a tape library, those differences may be critical.
    So you can't get as close as you may want, but I'll bet it would still be helpful.

  • Unable to create partition for solaris 10

    I have windows 7 installed in my vaio, and want to install solaris 10. I have 190 gb of space. Which I divided as
    1. 40 gb for windows
    2. 65 gb
    3. 65 gb
    4. 20 gb unallocated
    I want to install Solaris in unallocated space. when I try to install solaris 10. It shows only two partition 40 gb and 150 gb. I am new to Solaris.. please help.

    hello, you don't have to use hme0, that may not be your NIC type. your NIC appears to be realtek adapter. download the drivers first [try here: http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/rf-1.0.9.tar.gz] install them, then your NIC will have a name like rt0. you can then proceed to set its interface.i hope ifconfig -a, blah,blah is ok with u. If the adapter is ok then you can now do the zones - they are just automatic no strugling!
    you can also find the drivers from realtek website at -- ftp://152.104.238.194/cn/nic/rtl8139abcd8130810xseries/rtls211.zip
    here are sample instructions on how to install the driver
    How to install Solaris/x86 version
    1. This is the version 2.1.1 RTL8139 serials driver for Solaris/x86
    version.
    2. It support Speed/Duplex-Force mode, you can set it through rtls.conf file.
    3. It supports 3 PCI-VID_DID cards, VID_10EC_DID_8139 for Realtek's
    native, VID_1113_DID_1211 for Accton and VID_1186_DID_1301 for
    D-Link in the install script.
    4. Install method:
    a. Power-off your PC and insert your RTL8139 adapter.
    b. Boot-up you Solaris/x86 and login as "root".
    c. Copy the "rtls211.zip" into the temporary location in your
    hard-driver.
    d. UNZIP the "rtls211.zip" and you will get 3 files, "rtls", "rtls.conf" and
    "Install".
    e. If the PCI ID for your RTL8139 adapter is not VID_10EC_DID_8139
    or VID_1113_DID_1211 or VID_1186_DID_1301, you can modify the
    "Install" file to match your PCI ID, VID_ABCD_DID_WXYZ for example,
    modify the "pci1186,1301" to "pciABCD,WXYZ".
    f. Run the "Install" from File Manager to install the driver, and
    it will modify 2 files, "/etc/name_to_major" and "/etc/driver_aliases"
    g. You need to create the "/etc/hostname.rtls0" file and modify some
    other related files to make your networking environments working well.
    h. You can execute "touch /reconfigure" then "shutdown -i5 -g0", so that
    Solaris will reboot and scan changed hardware environment.
    i. You can execute "ifconfig -a" to make sure the RTL8139 driver is up.
    success. bye

  • Swap hardware for 10.2 database Linux (datafiles reside on SAN server).

    Hello Gurus,
    I am planning to upgrade hardware for two production database servers (currently Oracle 10.1.0.3.0 on Linux AS3 32bit) to New Dell Poweredge 6850 64 bit Linux AS4 upgrqade 7, Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 with replication enabled on certain tables.
    The database tablespaces and datafiles exist on a SAN storage server. I was wondering what is the fastest way to hook up the new servers and migrate or integrate the currrent two databases into the new hardware. I was looking at the old "export/import" but that would have some serious downtime. Transportable Tablespaces looks like an option- but I have no experience in it.
    My new servers have Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 installed and the servers are named the same as the old servers. Is there a way to have the new servers point to the SAN storage and just "pick up" the existing tablespaces and datafiles for the existing two databases? I have retained the block_size on the new configuration of 8K.
    What is the fastest way to get the new hardware up and running connecting to a SAN storage device "seeing" the old database.
    I would love any advice, I have a metalink account- but I thought this type of question would be better suited for the masses of experts out there who may have gine through this exercise before.
    Cheers,
    blakey

    Seems You want to migrate from 32bit architecture to 64bit?
    Then for upgrade to 10gR2 see metalink note 316889.1
    And as oracle will change from 32bit to 64bit as well (not only linux will 64 bit, but oracle software as well), then additional step for changing wordsize to 64bit is needed. And that is described in metalink note 62290.1
    Migration: as Your db is on san storage (everything including controlfiles, parameter files and so on) - then create equal mountpoints on new server (stop databases on old server, mount db related disks from storage to the new server) and that's it - next part is upgrade and migration to 64bit wordsize.
    Probably oracle software is installed on local disks and that means You will have to manualy copy $ORACLE_HOME/dbs - spfile, password file to the new server. And of course listener.ora, tnsnames.ora files as well.
    You can reffer to this metalink note 363609.1 for more details
    Of course, before go through all configuration (/etc/sysctl.conf and so, create equal /etc/oratab and adjust oracle user profile for new server).
    And before starting anything - take a full backup of oracle database (hot or cold, whatever You preffer).

  • Smpatch and Recommended Patches for Solaris 10

    Hi,
    Is there any way to make smpatch only retrieve recommended patches for Solaris 10 ?
    I've seen several forum posts saying to use
    smpatch set patchpro.patchset=recommended
    but other posters indicate that this only works for Solaris 9 (additionally, it doesn't seem to work at all currently:
    Failure: Cannot connect to retrieve recommended.zip: Not Found )
    As far as I'm aware, Sun's patching policy is to apply the Recommended patches, as well as any that address specific issues you are having. This seems to contrast with the behaviour of smpatch which grabs all patches..

    Hi.
    Depending on your hardware, you can use the following in place of 'current' in patchpro.patchset to get recommended patches:
    sunu45 = Sun Ultra45/Ultra25 Recommended
    sftxk = Sun Fire T1000/T2000 Recommended
    sfv2x5 = Sun Fire V215/245 Recommended
    sfv445 = Sun Fire V445 Recommended
    Mod.

    Edited by: Diganth.A on Feb 4, 2009 11:16 AMThis all depends on the operating system your are using and the type of 64 bit hardware architecture type.
    Can you please provide more specific details about the architecture and operating systems you are trying to install your JRE on?
    Typically you will want to download a pre-configured JRE for your OS platform and hardware architecture.

  • SUN QuadFastEthernet Driver for Solaris 8

    Does anyone knows if I install the drivers for Solaris 2.5 on my Solaris 8 if I have any chance that it will work?

    I am having the similar problem identified in this thread.
    OS: Sun Solaris 10 01/06
    Hardware: Sun Blade 2500
    PCI Memory card.
    Problem: When driver moves more then 40 bytes via PIO from a PCI device memory card, the long words are swapped starting at 40 byte transfer size and greater.
    device memory description:
    static ddi_device_acc_attr_t sdram_access_attr =
    DDI_DEVICE_ATTR_V0, /* Boilerplate value */
    DDI_STRUCTURE_LE_ACC,
    DDI_STRICTORDER_ACC /* Don't reorder accesses */
    The user application does a read call, which goes to xxread. xxread calls physio( xxstrategy, bp, dev, B_READ, xxminphys, uio );
    In xxstrategy the transfer is done using
    ddi_mem_rep_get8(ucb->ucb_sdram_accHndl,
    (uint8_t*) kaddr,
    (uint8_t*) raddr,
    (size_t) bp->b_resid),
    (uint_t) DDI_DEV_AUTOINCR );
    PCI Device memory is loaded with incrementing address (8bit), 0,1,2... This is confirmed using a PCI Bus Analyzer.
    A read of 36 bytes or less returns:
    03 02 01 00 07 06 05 04 ...
    A read of 40 bytes returns:
    07 06 05 04 03 02 01 00 ...
    If I peek 1 byte at a time using ddi_get8(ucb->ucb_sdram_accHndl, ...) I get
    00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07
    Why are the long words swapped starting at 40 byte transfer size and greater?

  • The deployment process seems to die or get stuck, iAS 6 SP3 for Solaris 8?

    When I deploy my application in iAS 6 SP3 for Solaris 8 the deployment process seems to die or get stuck. In the shell window i get the messages
    iasdeploy for iPlanet Application Server 6.0 SP3

    After this nothing happens for a really long time.
    When starting the deployment I get in the beginning of kas.log two entries
    ADMIN-168: kas> deployment get log ''J2EEInstallEar''
    GDS-007: finished a registry load
    but suddenly the second line disappears and the only message I get is the first entry. I need to break the deployment process and kill the processes manually.
    When starting the application server I get two error messages:

    I think all processes starts OK, I get one for .kas and one for kas, one for .kxs and one for kxs and finally one for .kjs and one for kjs.
    Is someone familiar with this/these problem(s)?

    It seems you are deploying a very big application. Try to deploy this application with following command
    j2eeappreg <filename>
    It should work fine. It was a bug with iasdeploy command in iAS SP3 which had been fixed in iAS SP4.

  • No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation

    Hi all, I have a problem when trying to install Solaris 8 (Intel) on my PC. There are some funny things happened while installing the OS.
    1.) My motherboard does not support booting from CD-ROM, so I downloaded a Device Assistant Boot Disk to boot it up. Then I use dd.exe to make the boot disk from the image, I have tried many times that after creating the boot disk, this boot disk will contain 512 bytes of bad sector. So why?
    2.) After using this boot disk to boot up and install the OS, before entering to the detection of the bus type stuff (still on the white screen), at the bottom of the screen, it says "ata_command select failed ... ...", what does this mean?
    3.) When the system go back to the white screen with language selection, I choose English (which is 1), and the system try to find my hard disk, but it failed and says "No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation" with a new line saying "installation documenation found.". So what is happening?
    Appreciate for any help.
