Fastest way to import MiniDV to DVD while breaking into clips?

Hi,
I have just started using my iDVD 5 on a Mini Mac with 512MB. I simply want to have the video on the tape broken down into clips and burned to a DVD with minimum manual intervention, simple menus (clip thumbnails), and fastest results. I had a Sony Vaio before and it was very simple and quick to so so. My first attempt took over 6 hours. I did not want to use oneclick DVD because it does not break the video into clips. I used magic iMovie, and selected simple menues, but "burning" just took for ever. My questions are:
1. Is DVD 6 faster than DVD 5?
2. Can I perform a "oneclick DVD" which also breaks the video to clips?
3. Is there a way to speed up the burn? Menu rendering took forever, are there simple menus which take less time. Video decoding took forever, can I download the video in another format (Mpeg4, etc.) which makes decoding shorter? Any other ideas?
4. What I am trying to do is simply have copies of all my tapes onto DVD's, but at the same time break down the video so that I can combine pieces from different tapes to make nice movies/DVD's. Am I using the right tools?
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the discussions...
Let me preface this by saying I am not an expert with the iLife apps (or any any app really!).
1) Don't know. But see point four.
2) Not that I know of.
3) Not really. You want to stay in DV for as long as possible. Rendering out to DVD for delivery of content only. If you choose any other format other than DV you actually increase the amount of work since the material needs to be in the DV format to begin with.
4) It is not a good idea to "archive" footage for later editing onto a DVD. As you have discovered, creating a DVD means compressing, thereby loosing information. Tape is the best way to save DV info. You could import the clips you want, create a movie of just those clips and send it back to tape for archiving.
In essence, you only want to create a DVD from DV files after the files have been edited to your liking. You don't won't, or rather shouldn't, create a DVD via iDVD of files to go back and later edit. In terms of media management (which really seems to be what you are looking for) FCE will offer better ways to organize clips while FCP will not only offer better ways to organize clips but give you the ability to capture only the clips you want by marking in & out points and doing a batch capture.
Rendering is processor intensive so the best way to speed up rendering is to buy a faster computer! 512MB of RAM is actually a bit on the low side for a Mac and editing. 1GB would serve you better but not have a significant impact on rendering times. LaCie does make a device that offers near real-time rendering however iDVD will not work with pre-rendered files.

    Is there a way to import commercially purchased DVD Movie to my iPod?
    I tried the "Import" function and that didn't work. Is there a function to convert and import or is there a program that might accomplish this?
    Thanks in advance.

    I would argue that transferring the movie to another medium for *your own personal use* is covered under "fair use", but of course I am not a lawyer. The law that you may be breaking would be the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Read up:
    http://w2.eff.org/IP/DRM/fairuse_anddrm.html
    In any case, we still can't tell you how to do it on these forums.

  • IMovie: whats the fastest way to import and save all original media?

    Good afternoon. Ok I need help please. Is there a way to simply take all the imported original media and just save it all in one fell swoop? Rather than having to import and then process/export clip by clip.
    I thought I had a quicker way just grabbing all the original media from the imported camera (right clicking imovie library > show package contents > original media) untill I tried to play one of the original media files - no sound and it was mov file. I assume mp4 is better???
    I have 2800 hours of video I need to import off my camera. I don't need to modify them at all, aside from the occasional combining of clips into one movie. So I need the fastest way. Importing and then exporting clip by clip will take me forever. I would prefer to just import and then just drag all 50 clips or so into my movies folder. But as stated above that does not seem to work as expected unless I'm missing a step.
    Thank you!

    ps Can I take the original media files (mov format) and batch convert them using handbrake or MPEG streamclip? And if so would the resulting videos then have sound? And which is the best format (container codec whatever) to export them to? Thanks!

  • Importing 3rd source dvd home footage into FCE

    Dear Forum,
    I'm not sure if I'm wording this correctly, but I am putting some footage together for a high school sports team. I have captured video from my canon camera. I also have dvds from another parent from the team. Can anyone suggest an easy way to import the home dvd, burned on a pc, into FCE so I can create a team video?

  • Is there any way to import my OWN DVD movies into iTunes and my video iPod?

    I just purchased the new 30 GB video iPod last week, and although I have already purchased a few movies from the iTunes store, I wanted to know if there was a way to import a DVD movie from my own DVD library like we can with our own music CDs?
    Thanks,

    "That's too bad, because these are movies (DVDs) that I own and have purchased legally myself. How is that different from importing your own purchased CDs into iTunes? Seems like a double standard to me."
    About "legally owning" the DVDs - Yes, I understand, and I'm figuring that most folks who want to put their DVDs onto their iPod are owning the movies legally (or, at least, it appears so).
    That's not really the issue here, though.
    The problem is, there is an encryption that is written onto regular, copyrighted DVDs (i.e., movies). In order to get that onto your iPod, you will have to use software on your computer that breaks that encryption, and makes the file into some more "normal" format, like say, MP4.
    This action can arguably be considered as illegal, in a sense, since you are removing the encryption that's on DVD, which is protecting it from being easily copied, and transferred around. (which would be illegal).
    This is a bit different than CDs, since, although they are copyrighted too, the songs are usually not in a protected format.
    If you have a song that you've purchased from the iTunes Store, and you want to break into that "protected" file format, that's the same kind of issue as the DVD ripping.
    (Notice that the Hosts included that into the ADUA as well, right along with DVD ripping.)
    ...It's quite an interesting kind of subject, isn't it?

  • Fastest way to import the data for big tables

    Hi friends,
    I have recently joined a billing product set up team for TELECOM giant.As part of the setup process /initial testing we need to put huge data (nearly 1.5 billion records/~200 GB size of data) in some tables. Currently i am using impdp for importing .It takes a lot of time (nearly >9 hours for loading this data).
    I have tried the below ways to import the data(All these tables are partitioned):
    1. Normal impdp (single thread i.e. parallel=1): This one takes a lot of time (>24 hours).
    2. Normal impdp but partition-wise .This one is completed in relatively less amout of time compared to the 1st method.
    3. Drop drop the indexes ,do inset append from another schema in same instance which has the data and then recreate the indexes ( total process takes ~9 hours)
    My questions to all:
    1.Is there any other way/trick in the book which I can try to put the data in less amount of time
    2.What i have observed that even if I give parallel=8 or any number ,sometimes parallel workers are spawned and sometimes not. Can someone educate me why ?
    3.How can i come to know (before running the impdp ) that my parallel clause is going to spawn the parallel workers or not. I have searched on this subject but no success as to how I will come to know this.
    I dont know what strategy to follow ,because this is a involved and repetitive task for me. Due to the above task I am not able to concentrate on other DBA tasks due to this which come to me.
    Cheers,
    Kunwar

    assuming you have a table with 3 indexes, then create a script for each index (reblace index_name_n with your index name) and start them at the same time, after the import of the table is completed
    DUMPFILE=<DUMPFILE> or NETWORK_LINK=<DBLINK>
    DIRECTORY=DATA_PUMP_DIR
    LOGFILE=<IMP_INDEX_NAME_n>
    CONTENT=ALL
    PARALLEL=1
    JOB_NAME=IMP_<INDEX_NAME_n>
    INCLUDE=TABLE_EXPORT/TABLE/INDEX:"IN('<INDEX_NAME_n>')"
    TABLES=<SCHEMA>.<TABLE>change following settings during import:
    increase pga_aggregate_target
    increase db_writer_processes
    db_block_checking=false
    db_block_checksum=false
    set undo and temp ts to autoextend
    set noarchivelogmode
    create 4GB redo logs

  • Is there a way to import only the Address Bookfrom OE into TB? When I started to import my full data, I clicked Cancel, TB crashed, & my Address Book vanished.

    Hi, I am in the process of migrating from Outlook Express 6 to Thunderbird. Thunderbird made the migration very easy, a click of an "Outlook Express" radio box selection for import. But then I made it hard on myself by deciding I wanted to fix an OE .dbx folder-file (make it importable, previously not imported likely because it was marked "read only" and then re-import. I started to re-import OE into TB but then got nervous when I saw everything was importing, not a single dbx folder-file I wanted to fix. I clicked "Cancel" in TB, and then, when I later opened TB, noticed that my Address Book now is empty. It was definitely full before. Any ideas how to import strictly my contacts again? I am thinking of importing my entire OE data again if the answer to that post is that the re-import will not result in double OE line items. If I re-import all of OE, my Address Book should reappear, too, right?

    Oops, I found the answer to my question. Great knowledge base! I had originally imported via the automatic popup dialog box that appeared when I installed TB, and didn't absorb at the time that there would be a way to do an import later, after TB install, too, and even for specific parts of OE (address book vs. mail messages, etc.).
    I pasted the link to the "Migrate to Thunderbird" page that includes how to migrate just an Address Book from OE, but the following is all that pastes in: 9723729938
    I have typed out the link here:

    I know this is an old thread, but I've been researching ripping my Laserdiscs to my Mac.  Did you ever get it worked out?  I've been reading here about the Grassvalley ADVC300 to capture and convert analog video to digital.  Still learning about it.  Also, here's a wiki that has a lot of information about ripping laserdiscs:

  • Is there any way to import an htm or swf file into Captivate

    I have a huge problem. I created a class in Captivate and
    published to a server. The .cp file was saved locally to my c:drive
    (mistake, I know) in the Captivate folders. I went through a move
    with my office and my PC was moved. Perhaps coincidentally, after
    the move, my original .cp file is gone. I've searched all folders
    on my computer, including deleted folders, and it's not there.
    However, luckily the published files are still in the shared
    directory on the server. Is there anyway to reverse the publishing
    process and get my original .cp file back?
    Thanks for your help! Patty

    Hi Patty
    Unfortunately there is no way to decompile a project from
    .SWF or .EXE back to a source .CP file. Personally, I've been
    campaigning for a decompiler for a long while. But so far it seems
    to have fallen on deaf ears. I don't believe we will see any real
    effort put forth to have one unless Adobe hears from enough users
    asking for it. If you would like to add your voice to those that
    would like to see one, please
    click
    here and complete the form you should find there.
    Just as a side note, you were
    NOT
    making a mistake in storing the project on your C drive!
    Actually, the mistake is most often made by keeping the project on
    the server.
    Where you probably made a mistake is by not placing
    a backup copy somewhere. (Even the server is a good place for a
    backup)
    Best of luck to you in reinventing your wheel. At least you
    have the output file to guide you along!
    Cheers... Rick

  • Any way to import a chart made in keynote into Numbers?

    I've built an expense chart in Keynote over the past year and would love to export the chart data from Keynote into the new Numbers so I can really manipuate the data. But haven't found a way yet to pull the data from the keynote chart and place in Numbers.

    I don't believe you can do what you want. AFAIK, Keynote doesn't support the export of data into for example a CSV file.

  • Fastest Method of Importing Video

    I am trying to start a project where I will be uploading video to stream online and in order to save time on editing, I was wondering what is the fastest way to import video in to CS3? Is the only way to import real time, meaning 1 hour of video takes 1 hour to import?
    I know people say that hard drive camcorders are not the same quality but I would think that Adobe would make importing video from them easy to save on import time.
    Thank you in advance. Sorry if I am asking common sense questions.

    The problem with hard drive cameras is the format they record to. If someone would make a DV hard drive camera, you'd be golden. But they all use MPEG compression, which is just not a good idea for source media.
    Currently the fastest way is to hook your camera up to your editing computer and record live to Premiere. Clips get saved on the hard drive, are already in the bins, labeled and ready to edit. This works great for Laptops, but is a but more troublesome if you edit on a workstation.

  • Importing a burned dvd

    My brother bought a tv episode on itunes and wanted to show it to me when he was visiting. However, when I try to import it in to my itunes (from a dvd he burned), it doesn't work. I get the message that I have to authorize my computer but when I enter either of our passwords, it doesn't work.
    Any suggestions?

    What is the best way to import from a DVD that has been burned with IDVD, etc.
    There are a number of possibilities. If quality is not an issue and you want something simple, you could use an application like HandBrake (free) to convert the files directly to MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC files which can be imported into iMovie '08.
    On the other hand, since your iDVD files are not encrypted, you can copy the VIDEO_TS folder (or simply the major, non-zero VOB files) to your hard drive. A number of third-party MPEG based applications can then convert the files to "high-quality" compression formats which iMovie '08 can use. These higher quality codecs will not really improve the quality of your original DVD content but may prevent further loss of quality as when using high compression codecs like MPEG4 or H.264. The files produced can be rather large -- i.e., on the same order of using you DAC to import DV compressed files. In any case, my application of preference would be MPEG Streamclip (free). Unfortunately, this application requires you to have the QT MPEG-2 Player component ($19.99) installed.

  • Any way to import multi-layered Illustator file into Motion?

    I have an Illustrator map of Europe and i would like to bring it into Motion.
    I know that Motion can import Illustrator files as pdf but is there any way to import a multi-layered illustrator file into Motion. I just saw this web site regarding a Motion plug-in that claims to do just this:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16298/layerlink

    Without a dedicated plug or FxPlug, Motion has no inherent ability to parse Illustrator layers.
    We just bust the layers out and save them as individual files. Or, of course, we use After Effects.

    When I import my word doc from import, (pages, chapter, okay,) the wheel just goes around and around. Nothing happens.
    When I pasted it in chapter by chapter in landscape, the text didn't show up in portrait, only the title page of the chapter showed up, no text.
