FAT32 external drive keeps needing repair/restore

Hey folks,
I recently received a Samsung TV that I have been hooking an external USB drive to but it requires it be formatted in a FAT32 file system. So I do this, and copy files over from my mac and everything works fine.
However, when I unplug the hard drive from the tv and plug it back into the computer after one or two times or so, the mac won't recognize or mount the drive. When I open up disk utility and verify it, it says it needs a repair: (unable to read directories, input/output error) attempt a repair, it says it is not possible, so I just have to erase it and reformat. I've done this probably 3 times, so far--does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep it from happening in the future? I've noticed that the last time it happened, it had connected to my mac and was copying files, then stopped and told me that I was unable to read/write the disk. Then, when I ejected and plugged it back in, it was unrecognizable.
Thanks, and apologies in advance if I haven't found this issue addressed previously.

How are you removing this drive from your TV? If you just unplug it without ejecting it in some way, then each time you remove it from the TV you are probably corrupting the drive. You should check your TV's manual to determine the correct procedure for disconnecting a drive.

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase the new drive. If the old external drive doesn't contain a bootable Mac OS X system or a Time Machine backup, you can just drag its contents to the new drive. If it does, use software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

  • Mac-formatted FAT32 external drive: cannot read with windows

I'm posting here in the hopes that it's a mac problem. I have 2 external drives, each USB and each very large (120+GB each). both contain a few files larger than 4 GB each. I formatted each drive using my Mac, one in Leopard and one previously in Tiger; each is FAT32 formatted and can be read easily with my Macbook in Leopard. I also have a 4GB flash drive that is FAT32 formatted, which was formatted using my Macbook.
when I plug either drive into a Windows machine (Vista or XP Pro SP2) it goes through the new hardware wizard but the drives do not show up in Explorer. the disk management service shows the drives but they appear as "unallocated space" and cannot be accesed. the option I have when I right-click on the drive is "Initialize". I sold my Macbook and don't have access to it anymore, and even if I did, the process of moving all of these files (a total of ~150GB) to an FTP server and then onto my new Vista machine is not possible. the even weirder thing is that my FAT32 formatted flash drive shows up on any windows machine without a problem.
Can someone explain what might have happened here? since the drives are both easily readable with any Mac (I've tried two, one with Leopard and one with Tiger) and they both show up in the Mac as FAT32 formatted, I can't imagine why they cannot be read with a Windows machine.

You cannot give yourself full access when connected like this. It is not supported. the only way to access an NTFS device with write privileges is while it is connected to a Windows host. This is because your Mac doesn't know what to do with the ACL information. While it's connected to a Windows host, you can get at the share and use the host's information to authenticate to it.
If you want to use it directly attached to the Mac, you need to have it formatted in a Mac readable format. Mac OS Journaled, HFS+, FAT32 among others... It'll need to be FAT if you want Windows to access it too though (and you can't set permissions on FAT drives like you can NTFS or HFS etc).

  • External Drive crashed-how to restore from Time Machine?

I've been using TM to back up my internal, as well as an external drive. The external has been acting a bit flaky the past week or so, and I think it just bit the dust. How do I go about just restoring the data that was on it to a new external HD? I don't want to affect the internal HD at all. TIA.

Do not use exactly the same name for the new drive. Once your replacement drive is properly formatted, connected, and mounted, turn TM off and just open a Finder window and +Enter Time Machine.+ Navigate to the last backup before the old drive died, and select your computer name in the Finder's sidebar.
That should produce a list of folders representing both the internal and external drives. Select the external and click the "gear" icon in the Finder sidebar. Select +Restore <item> to ...+ and you'll get a prompt where you can select the new drive as the destination. The restore will, of course, take a while.
Be warned that when your turn TM back on, it will back-up everything on the new drive, so it will be lengthy and take a lot of room on your TM drive. You cannot prevent this, unfortunately.

  • External drive died- need to get two ipod contents back

My wife's and my daughter's iTunes libraries were kept on the external drive because of the space issue with my MacBook Pro. It seems to have died and won't power up. Is there a way of getting their respective iPod contents back into new libraries once I have a new drive and/or create ones under their log in accounts ?

The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others as well, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    iPod.iTunes Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    iPodAccess Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    PodUtil Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7, look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If the iPods are set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that the iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. The iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use it without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Keep the iPods in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with the playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • Renaming quotation marks on FAT32 external drive

I used a quotation mark in a name I gave a folder on my new 500gb external drive. It was fat32, and now I cannot open, right click, or do anything to the folder, it renames itself when i do that to my email backup folder. It goes back to normal when i re-open the drive, but I cannot do anything to it.
I tried using the mv command in terminal, but it doesn't recognize the " marks when i use them. Does anyone have any advice?

    Figured it out.

  • Testing Leopard on External Drive/Keeping Tiger on Internal-Any Problems?

I am currently running Tiger 10.4.11 on my internal HD and I want to install Leopard on an external drive to test it against my applications before I commit to making the switch.
Are there any problems, concerns and/or precautions I need to be aware of or take when installing Leopard to the external drive? I have SuperDuper which has cloned my Tiger drive.
Once I've installed Leopard is there anything I should be aware of when booting Leopard off of the external drive and running my applications on the data that is on my internal HD?
    Thanks

No real issues. Just be sure your external HDD is partitioned with a GUID scheme, not Apple Partition Map (check that in Disk Utility).
    Hope this helps...

  • USB FAT32 external drive access time in 10.5.3+

I use Serato ScratchLIVE software with my MP3s stored on a FAT32 external USB bus powered hard drive. When upgrading to 10.5.3 or 10.5.4, the access time is slowed dramatically. When using 10.5.2, loading a song is almost instant. This issue did not occur until 10.5.3. There is no delay with HFS formatted drives, only FAT32. I would like to upgrade, but I cannot with the issue stated above. Any ideas?

It seemed to work for a little while. Under the CBR folder, there were 61 separate files of JPEG images alone. The first dozen or so seemed to come through alright, then I saw nothing but striated and partial (like 10% visible) images after that, no matter which of the JPEG folders I downloaded from.
I also tried to pick individual image files at random from any of the folders (both the CBR subfolders and the LaCie BigDisk Extreme Media subfolders) and everything I tried was mush. I utilized the recommended Allocation Blocks Layout settings (I have 7 settings available after my scan), and downloaded the same image 7 times with no success. One of the settings would give me a highly distorted image, and the other 6 came up unable to be opened.
I'm appreciating the encouragement here. I don't feel like giving up and walking away from this without a fight. I'm not wealthy, but I'm willing to spend some bucks to see this resolved without loss.
Any suggestions on data retrieval services?
I'm sorry to seem reliant, because I'm not well-versed with these things, but it's because I'm proud to say that I never had one single issue with my G4 over the course of five years of daily use.

  • Why does my Thermaltake Silver River 5G USB 3.0 External Drive keep disappearing?

    Hi All,
Having major problems with a Thermaltake Silver River 5G USB 3.0 External Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153160).  External drive contains Western Digital 2TB drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136891).  I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.3 on a 2012 Mac Mini.
Basically, I can plug-in or turn the drive on, it mounts fine. Can run a Time Machine Backup.  At some point (and I think it's when the computer goes to sleep), the drive hangs and I can no longer access it.  Time Machine will hang on "Looking for backup disk".  Drive will still appear in Finder, but I cannot "Eject" it.  I've also tried to do a "umount -f" on it from the Terminal.  Disk Utility still "sees" the device and the disk (partition?), but can't run a repair.
The only way I've found to fix this problem is to reboot the machine.  I've crawled through the System log, but I don't see anything that points to a problem.
What else can I check?  I'm have no idea if it's the hard drive, the external USB enclousure, Mac OS X, or the Mac Mini that's the problem.  Please let me know if there is more information I could provide to help solve this problem.  It's really frustrating!!!
    Thanks!
    -Ben

I received an answer from Thermaltake technical support. I asked if perhaps there was a firmware upgrade to prevent their drive from disappearing. They wrote on 22/04/2013:
Thank you for contacting Thermaltake Customer Service.
No firmware to do it. Just set system to never sleep. System will cut/disconnect the USB when it into sleep mode.
I wrote back saying I have never had to do that with other USB devices. And I routinely allow my system to Sleep. Is that an issue with their drive housings? They replied on 23/04/2013:
that is issue with sleep mode.
I don't know if this occurs with other USB 3.0 drives and Time Machine. Somehow, I doubt it. Anyway, it sounds as though my Thermaltake is destined for eBay...

  • Hard Drive Volume Needs Repair...........Please Help

    My Power/PC G4 with dual 1.25g processors with OS 10.4.11, is running very slow. I get the spinning beach ball whenever it tries to load anything from disk. I used disk utility to verify the hard drive. I got the following message;
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The Volume needs to be repaired
    1HFS Volume Checked
    Volume needs repair.
    I followed the instructions in Disk Utility to start my computer from my OS 10 install disk. The Disk Utility instructions gave the following instructions;
    1. Insert OS 10 Disk
    2. Hold down option key and start computer
    3. Select Install and click arrow
    4. Open Disk Utility
    5. click install
    6. open disk utility and click to repair
I followed the above but once I did step 3, I was on my way to do a new install.
Followed everything asked for on the screen, the next click was to start install.
Never once anywhere did I have the option for #4 above (open disk utility). I dont know what I am doing, just following directions. I aborted the operation as I did not want to clobber my installed 10.4.11.
Please tell me what I did wrong or how to get Disk Utility running from my OS10
install disk so I can run disk utility repair.
    Thanks
    Paul

Click here and follow the instructions. If there's no Disk Utility option in the Installer menu, use fsck.

  • MDT 2012 deploy OS from USB external drive failed - need to unplug and plug it once again

We are using MDT 2012 and deploying Windows 7 using media (USB external hard drive). We can successfully deploy Windows 7 32 bit using this method but there is a problem with deploying Windows 7 64bit. This problem appears only on HP EliteBook 840. We can
boot into WinPE 64 bit and can start proper task sequence, all image is applied then after restart, before logon screen appears there is an error saying that cannot find litetouch.vbs script. After clicking ok, I can logon to Windows and there is no usb external
drive recognized. But when I unplug and plug usb drive once again it is recognized by Windows and can be used. I can see that Windows install some drivers just after plug it again
I checked BIOS looking for some USB power options - there is no such settings. And 32 bit deployment works ok. So this is not a case. Looks for me like a problem with proper usb drivers for 64 bit. I download all drivers from HP website (driver pack and
drivers only for USB 3.0). We are using make and model matching in MDT - works ok for all the rest hardware models. Any idea how to troubleshoot it?

Not sure what's going on here. Is this a USB "Flash" drive or a USB "Hard Drive". There *Is* a distinction.
I *thought* that MDT would copy itself to the c:\minint\scripts folder to continue installation.
Next time, when you see this error, Press Shift-F10 to get into a cmd.exe prompt. Can you find litetouch.vbs on any of the drives? Does the USB Drive appear?
IF in fact, the USB Drive is not appearing after the 1st reboot, then you have a problem. Why did the USB 3.0 driver not install. Check the Driver Installation Logs to verify.

  • Itunes folder on external drive keeps reverting back to local iTunes folder

So I have all my digital music, pictures and videos stored on an external drive. I have 3 different MBP acessing these files and itunes randomely reverts back to the default local itunes folder and then I have to change and organize all over again which includes dups that I have to manage and delete later. What a pain in the arse! Does anybody have a solution that prevents this from happening, running Lion on all 3 MBP.

They are all using the library (and by that I specifically mean the library file, not just the media files) at the same time?  Maybe when one is actively using the library file it prevents the others from using it or somehow interferes and makes them think the library on the external is not usuable and they revert to the internal one.
If this is set up through some fancier nettwork then probably hte person who can answer your question will want to know the details.  iTunes typically revets to default when it cannot find a library on an external drive and perhaps something is happening with the network to change the identity of the drive in the way your computer perceives it.

  • My external drive keeps setting to read only, why???

Periodically a 1TB external drive suddenly switches to read only and won't let me save edited documents to it any longer.  It shows as read and write for my access but still won't accept written items.  I'm curious as to why.  It's getting a lot of files but still has significant space.  Is this an address space issue?  Has anyone else encountered this on their Mac?

    The drive is malfunctioning.
