Fatal crash

Problem: One of my Word 2004 doc- files crashes Pages 08 a BIG time. After crashing a couple of times, the whole Leopard became unresponsive. Nothing worked, no keyboard, no mouse... all dead (It's another story, but how can an application do such a fatal crash for the OS? I thought Mac OS X will still operate, though one application crashes...)
Ok. After a violent shutdown and restart of my dear iMac, I tried saving the troublesome word-doc in a text-only .txt-file. But Pages crashed again on opening the file and trying to scroll the document. Whooah!
Question: How am i supposed to transfer that word-doc to a Pages-document? Where should I begin to dissect the file? Will graphics cause that? or some font, or what? The file is 51 pages long and includes numerous screenshots and text. Nothing fancy...
Help, anyone?

Well, to continue this monologue, I seem to have managed to import that document into Pages without further crashes. First I removed all the formatting in Word 2004 and then imported that using Pages 06. And then I opened it in Pages 08 and saved the document. I keep fingers crossed to have resolved the issue, but so far so good.
Anyway, has anyone had any problems importing Word documents, apart from formatting-issues?
...How can I mark my own posting as Helpful or Solved?

  • Ongoing fatal crash and security bug related to connecting external display

The infrastructures in OS X to resume from sleep, to authenticate, and to change displays is fundamentally not working.
The security bug I have encountered has to do with connecting a cinema display exclusively to a MacBook Pro. This is a specific situation, but please note that I have experienced the same problem on no fewer than three independent laptop. Plus, the Genius in the Apple Retail Store was convinced of the general instability of this infrastructure. The security problem is that hot corners no longer function if I transition between two states in the same reboot. The first state is where I have the laptop powered on and using its own internal display exclusively (when I'm on the road). The second state is when I have the laptop displaying its output exclusively on an external display (when I'm at home). What happens is that an attempt to use hot corners fails. There is no response. I even added configuration on all four corners (whereas I originally had settings only for the rightmost corners), and even then, the hot corner action (of sleeping the display or entering locked screen saver mode) does not commence. This prevents the user from being able to secure the display on demand using standard methods that are supposed to work.
The instability level related to connecting the external display exclusively is high. Again, I've experienced this on no fewer than three independent laptops, and the Apple Genius at the Retail Store confirmed that this aspect of OS X did not work consistently. When I want to connect the cinema display to the laptop in such a way that the laptop's own display is not part of the active screen, the process I use succeeds about half the time. Supposing I have been on the road, where I am using the laptop display exclusively. I then put the laptop to sleep. When I return home with the lid open, I connect first the USB (power) from the cinema display to the laptop, and then I connect the Mini DisplayPort. When that step works, what happens is that the login screen shows on the cinema display despite the fact that my laptop lid is closed. This is good, and is what I want. At that point, I open the laptop lid and quickly log in.
With Apple being a mobile device company, I rely on the laptop for tasks that one traditionally may use a desktop for. This simply points to the versatility of the laptop. But I'd like the bugs resolved, so that I do not have to hesitate to make use of the inherent flexibility possible with the MacBook Pro.
Here's what happens when the process (of connecting the external display in a way that establishes itself as the only screen in use by OS X) fails. Firstly, when I connect the external display via Mini DisplayPort, the laptop doesn't even respond. Instead, it remains asleep. So to work around it I have to repeatedly disconnect and reconnect the Mini DisplayPort so that the asleep MacBook Pro will see that there is a display connected to it. Also, sometimes that isn't even enough and I have to open the laptop lid, and put it to sleep again so as to trigger whatever actions are necessary to recognise the external display (presumably by having the laptop recently awake). Around half the time, I have to play this game of disconnecting and reconnecting until it actually works. This high level of reproducibility (confirmed by the Apple Genius representative's confidence that this part of the system doesn't actually work) should make it easy for an engineer to look into the problem.
Fatally, and recently, OS X has completely crashed when I have attempted to connect the external display. The external display has gone completely blue, and after a half a minute, it blanked out and my entire laptop became unresponsive. I called Apple Support and was given a case number. I also took the laptop into the retail store to see if I could recover my current session without rebooting. There was no process suggested to make that happen and I was told to reboot the machine. I've had this happen before on other laptops, and it is frustrating that the kernel reaches such a state that it cannot be used. As I see it, this problem is not too unrelated to the way that I need to play a game in order to get the external display connected exclusively. Here are some workarounds that could be added:
Firstly, whenever I connect an external display, I'd like the laptop to see that this has happened, and to take action accordingly (such as resuming from sleep). Secondly, If I connect an external keyboard, and press a key on it, I'd like this to wake the laptop too (in the event that the first method fails for some unforeseen reason). I'd also like the connection of the cinema display's USB power not to cause the laptop to enter into a confused state between asleep and awake. Sometimes I need to disconnect and reconnect USB power in order to trigger the laptop into waking, but that's only because it's not doing it on its own properly. On the other hand, I also ensure that the laptop doesn't have the Mini DisplayPort connected without also having the cinema display USB power connected, because that also is an unsupported configuration.
I've also gotten the laptop to become confused about whether it is asleep or awake. When I open the lid, it seems to enter into sleep mode, but closing it seems to bring it into an active state.
Also, I've successfully logged on and authenticated with the screen showing exclusively on the external display. But just ten seconds after I start using the system, the laptop falls asleep--with the lid open! Whatever triggers that action doesn't seem to be on track. The laptop is open, there are incoming events such as mouse movements and key presses, and the external display is on and is in use. And then the laptop falls asleep! This has happened numerous times. Not only should this not happen; the instances where it does happen can cause further instability and put my system at risk of fatally crashing.
Also, the authentication system itself is highly buggy--far more than it should be. At times I have opened the laptop lid and caught a glimpse of a window before I have begun the login process. Also, an external authentication application that asks for Kerberos/AFS login credentials has been able to overlay itself on top of the primary authentication (whereas I should only see a single login dialog when I need to authenticate to the system). Also, I've had several of these authentication screens overlay on top of one another, although it's been months since I've experienced that one (so it may have been fixed). Also, around a third of the time, the window that authenticates me (on the black background) somehow transfers itself into the background (even though there's only one window!). What that means is what I begin to type my password, and now the laptop starts beeping at me and I need to manually click on the password field and begin entering my password again. This really shouldn't happen, and indicates too much complexity in this authentication process (such as, more OS X code is involved than is strictly necessary, which is likely to make the authentication system more difficult to test). Also, at times, I have been using too much CPU, such that the authentication screen takes too long to emerge. That also means that I'm not able to logon until I uncleanly shutdown the laptop. If the laptop has been asleep, and is revived in preparation for login, then that login screen should be given highest priority, even if there are other heavy CPU or I/O intensive tasks running in the background. And maybe the login dialog shouldn't disappear when the user is legitimately attempting to log in. So even if there is a possibility that the system is under heavy resource use (or there is a stall or minor deadlock), it shouldn't prevent the user from logging in altogether.
At the moment, the very fact that the system shut down uncleanly means that the full disk encryption suite that I used has entered into an undetermined state, suggesting I may lose access to all my data. It's my hope that I can rely on Apple's products to interoperate in a way that won't cause me to be fearful and restrictive in my use, so that I can freely connect an external display at times, and at other times carry the laptop on the road.

Ive got the same problem with Samsung UE225010 monitor too, its full hd but it looks terrible, could it be Displayport adapter issue, because couple month ago Ive tryed with some IPS display, and it looked same bad.

  • Need step by step instructions to rebuild HD after fatal crash Pavilion dv6 Product #A1U59AV

Factory installed HD suffered fatal crash - nothing recoverable.  Unfortunately cannot clone no image of the old HD is available.
Downloaded and installed Windows Home premium 64 bit iso from digital river but it does not seem to have any drivers.  Also it does not seem to let me change the activation code with - right click Computer then properties.  I want to rebuild exactly as it came from HP when new.   Everything else on the computer seems to work since I have been able install Ubunu from Live CD with no problems.
Please help with step by step instructions how to rebuild.  I am also awaiting recovery disks by mail.
    Thanks

Just wait until you get the recovery disks. HP does not make a great many of the apps available to download. If you just want to restore drivers they are here at this website. After a digital river OS install you will need to use the Microsoft phone activation using the Key Code on the sticker. And yes, the digital river disk is generic and might not have drivers you need.

  • Continuace Hotsyncing a precursor to fatal crash

I've been looking at the postings on this site and others and have come to the conclusion that Palm Centros have a fatal flaw:  if your Centro starts continuously hotsyncing then it will crash on you - not just crash - like DOA - won't reboot - dead.
I bought a centro just over a year ago and loved it at first.  Then it started to get stuck in continuous hotsyncing loops.  For a while, removing the battery would fix it.  Then it crashed and would not start up again.  The red power light was on, but it wouldn't start - hard restart, soft restart, nothing.  Fortunately, had the phone about 11 months and was able to get AT&T to send me a new one.  I had the new Centro about 6 weeks when it started to do the same thing!  Continuous hotsyncing.  And, no, I did not have any third party software on it.  It finally crashed (no hard restart would help it) - after only 6 weeks and, unfortunatly, 2 weeks outside the original year so AT&T refused to replace it saying the warranty had expired.
PLEASE Palm - take care of your customers and fix this flaw and quit writing it off like we have done something to the phones.  I since have a Blackberry and sorely miss the ease of operation that I had with the Centro, but will never buy another Palm again.
    Post relates to: Centro (AT&T)

Sounds like you had some corruption in your databases that kept getting resent to the phone.  Any reset loop is not normal, and can usually be traced to a software problem.
We've also heard from many users that getting the phone wet in the connection port can cause Hotsync loops.
Enjoy your BB!  Hope it proves to be a better experience than your Centro was.

  • Random fatal crash with external display

    I have an iMac 9,1 (Intel c2d @ 2.93GHz) running OSX 10.6.1
I have my Sony Bravia KDL-46W4500 hooked up to it through display-port -> hdmi adapter -> hdmi cable. 9 out of 10 times, this works great. But occasionally, when I turn on my tv (my iMac is always on before I turn on my tv), I can see the screen being detected, followed by a complete crash/freeze of my iMac. Not even a "you have to restart" screen. It just fails, epic. I think I have seen this problem also a few times with OSX 10.5.x, so it is not something new to Snow.
Anyone care to have a guess as to what is causing it?

    Hi alcohol
    20 or 24" iMac?
Which graphic's chip does it have?
How much RAM does it have?
Some models have a graphic's chip that shares RAM with the main memory.

  • Mac Mini "Fatal" Crash

    Hi all,
I've been having trouble with my Mac Mini over the last 2 days, yesterday, receiving the grey box with "you must restart your computer" message 4 times! After restarting, I am informed that OS X quit unexpectedly.
This has only started happening in the last few days. No hardware changes have been made, nothing out of the ordinary to software - running Leopard 10.5.1 fine. Running everything else up to date (quicktime, itunes etc)
Most of the time it works fine, I use it as my media server running iTunes, and playing DVDs.
If anyone could explain why this is happening I would appreciate it very much!

This has been happening to me on a machine that I use for my office transcriptionist. The drive went bad and I replaced it, but I'm wondering if the RAM is touchy, as well. It passed all of the hardware tests on TechTool 4.5, so that was mystifying. It's located in a place where it should get plenty of ventilation, so I don't think overheating should be an issue, plus it wasn't that dirty when I replaced the drive 6 weeks ago. Running 10.4.11, no additional installs, lately, it should all be pretty up to date regarding the programs we are running on it - nothing has changed in the way it's being used and it was stable for a year or more, until the drive went bad. ( purchased used, though, so hard to know the history.)
This sounds like the same problem to me. I will try replacing both RAM chips and see what happens - I'll try to remember to report back. I may see if the freebie temperature monitor for laptops (name?) will run on it, but my transcriptionist is likely not savvy enough to really assess what's happening at the time it crashes.

  • Fatal crash during CD burning

Hi all,  i have troubles with Audition 3.0.1 on my Win 7 Professional x64. All functions work well (sometime slow but they work) and i am content with it.
BUT one thing is there: If I burn CD directly in Audition, sometime by unknown reason burning stops, windows freezes, CD-ROM is unable to eject and I have to make hard reset of computer. Of course, recorded CD is corrupted. Recently it is more and more often.  Can anybody help me with this?  Thanks

  • All VIs containing MathScript cause a fatal crash after upgrading from 8.2 to 8.5... what gives?

So I finally took the plunge and updated to 8.5 from 8.2 and now when I open a project that was previously done (as in ready for release this week ) it causes a hard crash where LabVIEW closes completely.  I've looked and can't seem to find any others complaining of this.  My only option that works at this point is to have a coworker open all my VIs containing mathscript and delete the function with his 8.2 enviornment.  What could be causing this?  There has to be some simple answer...somewhere.
Thanks in advance for all the help!
    Regards,
    Dave

These VIs work fine for me under LV 8.2 and will no longer work under LV 8.5.  The first one is a call to our power supplies, the second uses the math formula node to verify that some color and luminance parameters are valid.
In the meantime I am stuck using a coworkers 8.2 development system with TS 3.5 to deploy which works with no issues.  When I try on my new system with 8.5 and TS 4.0 it crashes out.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Regards,
    Dave

  • Captivate - Fatal Crash

I have been working on a file with advanced actions.  Captivate quit without any error message or warning.  I had 2 files open, the one I was working and another one.  Both files have completely disappeared from my computer.  I know the name of both files and where I stored them and they are no longer there. The preceding version is there which means I have lost about 2 days work.  I'm working on a MAC OSX 10.8.3 and with Captivate 6.
Any idea will be most welcome.
    Thanks
    Ann

    Hi
I've done both.  When it crashed there were at least 2, possibly 3 files open.  Looking at the file structure it may be that there is a file within a file, within a file.  I've attached a screen grab of the file structure.
I've tried copying the inside of the first DB file, removing the already in use.lock file (I found that one), compressing and changing the extension.  Then I tried compressing the inside of the 2nd DB file with the locked file.  Neither file would open and I have attached a screen shot of the error message - it's not a good one.
    Thanks for your continued help.

Recently I had a crash resulting from a virus infected email. Upon reinstating my operating system (XP Pro) and lost software, I am having difficulties in syncing my Iphone with my PC, my Library apps is blank but the apps are still showing on the iphone. I'm also having problems with my account which is stated to be different from the one on the PC, possibly because I reinstalled itunes. • Just found this forum! StageWebView causes fatal crash in AIR on Android

    Hi,
I posted here http://forums.adobe.com/message/5144040#5144040 but then found this, better, forum when googling for others who'd found the same.
Essentially, I have a URL that I know a) has a redirect b) may have a security cert issue with some of the content it loads. When I launch this URL in a StageWebView in Nexus 7 running the latest Android OS, it wipes out fatally without any warning, notification etc... It just goes. Gone. Dead. Bang.
I am trying to get to the bottom of this, but need to work out first if it is OS, StageWebView, Nexus or what... I know I can open the same URL in Xoom without issue (other than the cert notification) but that is a slightly earlier OS release and different hardware.
    G

Thanks for the heads up.  Could you please open a new bug report on this over at bugbase.adobe.com?  When adding the bug, please include some sample code and the URL in question so we test this out internally.  If you'd like to keep this private, feel free to email me the sample code/url directly ([email protected]).
Once added, please post back with the URL so that others affected can add their comments and votes.
    Thanks,

hey hans777, yes i did try that in fact, though to me it seems wierd. i pulled out the USB card that was PCI slotted(which was the only thing on the board that was third party)i did the firmware update(which only delt w/OS9),the 10.4 install,10.4.1-11 & security updates in order, did /sbin/fsck -fy & permissions frequently etc. the box was working fine. i reinstalled the USB card, did /sbin/fsck -fy and permissions. everything was fine. i pulled out the AGP16/MB video card and replaced it with the 64/MB card. did /sbin/fsck -fy & permissions.........again everything was fine. i then pulled out the 3/128 SDRAM sticks and replaced them with 3/256 dbl sided sdram sticks from my B & W box.........then nothing but the 2sec start up try w/the little quiet beep and the shut down. i reinstalled the original ram that i did the 10.4 install with, one at a time in different combos changed slots, tried with the HD disconnected and the 10.4 install disk in the rom slot........all i ever get is the 2 sec start up and the quiet beep and a shut down...the only thing that i haven't done is try a HD with OS9 which i prolly will try tonight....thanks to everyone for their help and time. i don't have a full time hook-up at this time , i only get 30 mins at a time. i will follow full protocol re marking things read and pass points/ata'boys as i can fine the time.
so, to answer the question yes i reinstalled the original 16meg card, but it didn't do any good....same reaction/symptoms...a quiet beep and a sigh
all of my SD chip sets have been used/installed in my B&W or my sawtooth with no problem at one time or another. they are a mixed bag of pc100/pc133--the 256 sticks are dbl sided. thanks again,da klein

  • ITunes 7.4.1.2 causes fatal crash on Vista

Hi, just installed a new version 7.4.1.2 and while itunes is creating the library Vista crashes and reboots. Not even a blue screen. What could be the problem?
    Thanks, Oliver

Same thing happened to me. Did the 7.4 update last night. Seemed to go ok. The update wanted a restart to finish the update. But then Vista wouldn't come back up. Finally after several restart attempts Vista went into a recover mode and fixed itself, which I would imagine took off the update and put files back the way they were before the update. All fine again. Tonight I get the 7.4 update popup again. No way! Not until I hear something about this. Scared the living out of me last night. Hope somebody knows something about this.
