Fault tolerance for network printing

What options are available to provide fault tolerance for network printing?  Currently, all our shared printers are on ServerA.  Is it possible to have similar shared printers on ServerB and have the clients automatically switch to Server B if
Server A became unavailable?  We don't care about load balancing as much as fault tolerance.  Thanks to all who post!

A failover cluster node ? (not in nlb;
Servers in a Network Load Balancing (NLB) failover cluster cannot be used as print servers in Windows Server 2008 )
For environments that require high availability, you can use a failover cluster as a print server.  If a node in the cluster fails, all print functionality will fail over to the next node in the cluster.  To improve failover times, we recommend
that the administrator for the cluster force failover to each node when new print drivers are installed on the server.  During a failover, the driver installation is forced to occur on the active node.  The installation of the driver on each node
can require several minutes. Forcing this installation process during maintenance will make sure that any unplanned failovers during usual operation will be very quick, because the drivers will already be installed on each node.

  • Won't print information sheet for network printer

I have accessed my printer on two different computers wirelessly. I need a "printer code" for other devices, which apparently is printed on some "sheet"....which won't print. I get a message that "a web services information sheet will be printed...." but nothing ever comes out (but documents do so I know it works.)
How do I get this information sheet to actually print?

Thank you SO much for your quick response! I think it kept dropping the connection intermittently and screwed up the request to "enable" the network printing. (That was on the page where you enter the ip address in a webpage) so when I asked to print that info page, it just lost the request every time.
I did google around a little and reset the router and the printer by replugging in the printer. I also reset some automatic IP stuff  to manual setting (I am REALLY not familiar with this kind of thing...can you tell!? ha ha!!!)  Anyway, I followed the instructions for a different printer (with a similar connection issue) here on the hp site...the DNS thing seemed to make the difference:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Networking-and-Wireless/HP-Photosmart-5510-Printer-Wireless-Net...
I hope other non-techies like me can follow those instructions too. That 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4. stuff and the re-plugging in seemed to somehow make it work!

  • Xerox workcentre 7225 print driver fails while searching for networked printer

HelloJoe,Thanks - So I took those steps and the printer is created as a local printer using a TCP/IP port with the proper IP address for that printer. It appears I can get to its property pages. But when I try to print, the job goes to the queue and it just hangs eventually timing out and it shows error for printing that document... I can ping the IP adddress from the PC and it returns pings. ?

This unit is working fine from several other PCs, WIN 7 and WIN XP, in the building. Installing on a WIN7 64 bit PC. During the installation it starts to look for the networked printer and stops, posting the message -  [ Xerox windows common installer has stopped ] , then installer just hangs. I have uninstalled and tried the following versions with the same error -  Date: 2 Jun, 2014Version: 5.351.8.0.0Size: 17.7 MBFormat: EXEand tried  Global Print driver  Date: 15 Dec, 2014Version: 5.404.8.0Format: WWW NOTE - I even tried a manual driver installation which appears to work but the printer fails to print - returning a print error and cancels the job. Help,Jim

  • Deskjet F 4480 and a print server for network printing

I have a HP Pavilion (win 7) and an Acer netbook ( Win XPsp3) wirelessly networked with the HP Paviion  as the host for the Deskjet multifunction printer. I would like to set up a print server  to alleviate some problems we are having with the Acer accessing the printer. Uaually all is ok, but  It seems that whenever that netbook is put into sleep mode, I have to reboot it, shut down the printer (even to the point of disconnecting the USB and power cords, and then re hooking up all the cables)  to get ithe netbook to print. so, I am looking at installing a print server to get around this annoyance.
I am using a DLink WB-1310 router, BTW.
Any suggestions on a capable print server? Not to mention any other suggestions, which i certainly would appreciate.
    Thank you, all.

HP-provided drivers don't support network printing. You'll need to install Foomatic (a PPD interpreter), ESP ghostscript (postscript translator) and the 712c PPD from:
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/foomatic/
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/showprinter.cgi?recnum=HP-DeskJet712C
Then, since we don't have the auto-setup software for OS X, you need to review the print server manual and find out which IP printing protocol to use. The easiest is HP Jetdirect (called TCP/IP raw port printing in many manuals) if it's available, because it doesn't require the device queue name.
    Good luck.

  • Dell 968w..how do I set the IP address for network printing?

Attempting to connect my Dell 968w to the network for access by my HP and Dell laptops.  Dell said I need an IP address for the printer..how do I set the address???

you need to contact dell printer support for this info...this is usually done by printing a network config page on your printer & you'll see the printer ip address there.

  • Why is Paper Saving option not available in Windows 7 for network printer HP OfficeJet J5750

I have an HP OfficeJet J5750 printer connected to my desktop running Windows XP via a USB port. I just purchased a new laptop running Windows 7 that is connected to the network through a wireless connection. When I print from my laptop I am unable to change the printer's preferences to be able to print multiple pages on one sheet, as in the paper saving option. Why is this? How can I access this option?

    Hi,
Those are not programming mistakes, but those are limitations of the product, please check the printer specifications below:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02858465&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
As you may find under Paper-handling specifications > Paper tray capacities, Tray 2 only support Plain Paper.
Maximum DPI is only only supported on Photo Paper, therefore those limitations are applicable.. these limitations are also listed on the Printing Specifications section above, Maximum DPI is listed as 4800 by 1200 dpi:
Color print resolution: HP enhanced photo quality with Vivera inks (up to 4800 by 1200 dpi Optimized on HP Premium Plus photo papers with 1200 x 1200 input dpi)
As well that can be find listed within the Print photos on photo paper or the Print borderless documents sections, you may simply search for Maximum DPI within the user guide as a reference:
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03026243.pdf
Those are not an issues with the printer but those expected limitations fully meet the product specification.

  • Printer Utility cannot lookup host computer for network printer sharing

Recently I set up a local net work. G4 Quicksilver is host computer,iBook tries to lookup host to print either from iBook or G4 desktop, get message "can't lookup host". I can access G4 desktop from the iBook, open documents and work on them and have (I think) set up the network correctly. I can access internet from both. I have a D-link router which I have used to access the internet with my iBook (has airport card) but recently installed an airport card in the G4. One thing I noticed was that the G4's name that shows up in the printer utility and in the "cannot lookup hos"message is different from the name I gave my local network, though the name ends in .local for both. Both identify my G4.I have tried AppleTalkon and off, when on my printer utility on th iBook shows the G4 printer as having the iBook as host. I use a CS6600 Epson standalone if that is relevant. Thanks in advance!

Disabling safe eyes does not fix this problem.  You have to actually un-install safe eyes....
I found this out the hard way.  After 4 hours on the phone with HP trying all different things, on two different computers....we gave up....
Both computers already have safe eyes installed.  Both running Windows XP Service Pack 3.  When you try and install the printer and configure for wireless, the program craps out and gives you an error message.  We tried multiple things to no avail.  I asked the rep, hey could this be Norton or Safe Eyes?  I don't think so.  So, this was referred to a Network SME.  And I gave up.
Recently, I decided to give it a shot again.  I un-installed Safe Eyes completely.  No problem.  Wireless printer softer installs, does not crap out, and I can print wireless!
Ok, so now I want to re-install safe eyes.  After re-installing, wireless printing is broken.  My theory is there is a incompatibility or conflict with one of the drivers.  The dll that is mentioned is the icf.dll driver.
So, who is going to fix this?  I've been using safe eyes for 7 years and don't feel like un-installing just to wireless print.  However, the whole reason I bought this printer was for it's wireless capability!  Help HP!

  • Configing Windows pcs with bonjour for network printing help

    bonjour downloads and installs correctly
runs setup fine, double click icon
bonjour for windows connects and see the printers
    printers install drivers sucessfully
when doing test page thru windows printer configuration
-it then outputs code below example, (not exactly the same)
    ≈$└24ü≤$5≈$└24ü≤$5≈$└24ü≤$5≈$└24ü≤$5 etc. etc.
computers are windows xp pro sp2 trying to connect and printer.

Are the printers connected to Macs, is so you need to use a postscript driver rather than the actual Windows printer driver.
So if you have a black and white printer, you should use the Apple Laserwriter driver.
If the printer attached is a colour printer use the Apple Color Laserwriter driver regardless of which printer you actually have.

  • Problem finding driver for Canon iP4500 for network printing

I'm using a DLink DPR-1260 as a print server which I share between OSX and Windows boxen. I've installed the appropriate Canon iP4500 drivers on my Mac and if I attach the printer directly via USB everything is good. However, as it's a shared device I'd prefer to access it over the print server. The problem is that I can't get the Canon drivers to appear when I use it in that mode; all the regular Gutenprint options appear but that doesn't include this particular model. I'm guessing that Canon has written them such that they only work when directly connected, but is there a way around this?

Get a newer version of Gutenprint:

  • Is send connectors fault tolerant for source servers?

    Hi!
I am in the process of applying SP3 on our Exchange 2010 environment. I have two Hubs that are both specified as source servers in our send connector to the internet. I just want to double check that when I'm applying SP3 to one of the server, that the other
server is taking care of sending all emails.
My fear is that it is only load balancing so every other email will fail to be sent because on of the hubs are down.
So can I safely update one of the servers and mail will be still sent from the other? Or should I just remove it as a source server from the send connector?
I will of course redirect incoming emails to the hub that are up at the moment.
    Thanks!

    Hi ,
Based on my knowledge while doing service pack upgradation on the hub transport severs there is no need to remove that particular server from source server list on the send connectors.
In addition to that mail flow will load balanced across both the hub transport servers listed on the source server list .So on such case if anyone of the server in send connector's source server list is not funtional for the particular point of time then
it will prefer the second funtional server to send emails to internet. Finally i would like to say that there wouldn't be an loss in emails.
    Thanks & Regards S.Nithyanandham

  • How make DNS for real fault tolerance?

    Hi,
Is there any change to make DNS-server fault tolerance for clients (member servers and applications)
    Scenario:
Primary and Secodary DNS (not AD-integrated)
If we like to move or rebuild crashed DNS-server from old to new host, there will came service brake for one DNS-server (new server is up and running some time before DNS have been configured (you can ping it and icmp response)),
DNS-client is happy for that thus there is no DNS-service or zones and not use secondary DNS-server cause server answer with ICMP and criticals softwares stop working. Is there any change for DNS real fault tolerance?
I have understood this feature is same in Windows world and non-Windows world

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that there will came service brake for one DNS server when moving or rebuilding crashed DNS-server from old to new host.
There are 2 DNS servers: primary and secondary DNS server, both are not AD-Integrated.
DNS design specifications recommend that at least 2 DNS servers be used to host each zone. For standard primary-type zones, a secondary server is required to add and configure the zone to appear to other DNS servers in the network. This design may provide
a basic level of fault tolerance for resolving names. Once primary DNS server crashes, secondary DNS server is ready only and can’t process update requests, so we need to manually change the secondary server to primary, and then try to repair the crashed one
    or add another DNS server.
Comparatively, AD-Integrated primary zones, secondary servers are supported but not required for this purpose. For example, two DNS servers running on domain controllers can be redundant primary servers for a zone, providing the same benefits of adding a
secondary server while including additional advantages.
Depending on your need, and choose a better one.
    Best Regards,
    Eve Wang

  • Best networked printer for a MAC based network?

I may regret asking this :"), but what is the best network printer to use on a MAC based network? I have been the victim on the bloatware HP drivers for years, and am really sick of them. But what do I purge this nightmare for? Canon (like the MX860) looks interesting and is multifunction (a requirement). Lexmark seems to making a comeback, and Brother as well. Epson has seemed to do OK as well. Who has the most reliable drivers for the OSX platform, updates them the most regularly, and seems to actually care about Apple (as opposed to pandering to the Windows crowd almost exclusively).?
    Comments?
    Dan O

I did my homework for network printer/scanner/fax and came up with the Brother Color Laser MFC-9840 CDW. It's got every button and whistle, and they all work on a Mac or PC network. You can scan from the machine and pick which Mac to send the scan to, or scan from a Mac. Sheet feeder works for fax and scan, real duplex printing. All works on Leopard. They have lower models which will also work, but without the Color, or Wireless (which we don't use).
I've seen great on-going driver development with the latest operating systems...

  • Cannot find HP AiO networked printer

Spent over 1.5 hrs with HP support to no avail...thought someone here may have some additional information.
Have an HP PS3210 AiO printer connect via USB to my MBP. My wife can print fine as long as I'm home and my computer is on. When I am away she must connect her PB to print. No big deal but an inconvenience.
The 3210 has built in networking so I tried to connect it to the wireless router for network printing with a wired (Cat 5) connection. HP software could not find the printer. Uninstalled and re-installed software with most current version, still could not find the printer. Here's what's weird. Both machines can find the printer by entering the IP address in a browser window. It prints, scans, shows ink levels, tech data, everything. On the PB I can manually install the printer by going to printer setup utility, add, default browser, more printers, then selecting HP IP printer from the drop down menu but I cannot do it on the MBP. HP IP printing is not offered as an option. Even after adding the printer manually, printing a test page so I know it works, when I run the HP device setup program it still does not find the printer.
I have tried disabling the firewall on both machines, no change. HP says I have a problem with Bonjour, that it must be working properly in order for the software to see the printer on the network. If that's so, how come everything else seems to see the printer?
I have alot more faith in the knowledge available on this board than anythig HP can do for me. Any ideas or suggestions????
    Thanks!
    MBP 2.33 C2Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You're very welcome, and that's great news. Now because you were able to add the printer and successfully print from the EWS, it let's us know that everything is set up properly we just need to contact the router manufacturer and have them open up some ports that may be blocked.
When you contact them please tell them to make sure that the bonjour multicasting is enabled on the router. Now you will need to make sure that the following ports are unblocked:
    UDP: 427, 161, 137, 138,
    TCP: 9100, 9220, 9500, 137, 139, 427
    Bonjour Ports: 80, 443, 5222, 5223
Once these settings are changed and ports unblocked you should now be able to successfully print to your D110a.
Let me know how everything works out!

  • Network Printing. (Pinter on a PC)

    Hi,
I just bought a 24" Imac. This is my first Mac!
I am trying to setup a printer on my Mac that is on a PC...
I tried going into the Print setup area and clicked the "+" button... I waited for a while butt nothing showed up...
I then clicked... (I think it was browse and found the Netowrked PC the printer was hooked up too.)
It then opened a new window asking me for the printer name so I typed in "K550"..
I clicked ok and it appeared it had found a printer... So I tried to print something and blank pages started shooting out of my network printer... There was weird gibberish text on a few sheets...
I quickly turned off the printer, and here I am now asking you for help.
I am sorry for my ignorance, but I am very new to the Mac world.
So far I am very happy I made the switch and everything has been a breeze! But this has me stumped...
    Thanks so Much!
    -Nick

Network printing/Windows printing only works with a driver that was meant for network printing. To use the OS X built-in CUPS network choices, you need a CUPS driver. For postscript printers, it's not an issue, because postscript is the native output of OS X, and can easily be routed to the various choices in Printer Setup.
Non-postscript printers are Very Different. Except for Brother, no manufacturer has provided CUPS drivers. Instead, what you get are Carbonized, OS9 legacy drivers, that have the comm protocol written into the driver (mostly USB). They can only print via local connection.
Short version - HP's driver won't work for network printing.
Get the hpijs + ESP ghostscript driver set:
