Faulty bt main socket

Hi,
I am new to this forum so please be patient i have lived in present house for about 35 years, but have never used the master socket as there is a bt wired extension that has always been used, today i plugged a filter in and a adsl cable as i wish to move my router, will not work plug a phone in and it works plug same filter and lead into the extension and it works,as the extension is wired from the back of the master socket, i assume something is wrong with the actual socket on the front of the box, the box is at least 40years old is there a charge to have this box replaced.

Very unlikely to be the master socket, what type do you have? Make sure that you are not double filtering the router.

  • Continuos Ring, cannot find main socket, Leviton p...

Hi, I'm new to this country and have not been experiencing any issues with BT, but recently my cordless phone started to give out a continuos ring for no reason. I contacted BT via email and they asked me to check the BT main line socket to test my phone equipment through the 'test' socket. Quite simple to follow but simply cannot find the main socket in my flat.
Now, I discovered a classy Leviton Phone distribution system in the utility area which sort of explains that I most probably don't have a main socket inside my flat, as the mains must be down in the basement somewhere which is obviously not accessible to me. I went through the internet and found out that BT probably wont be able to help anyway, so what should I do now??? There are chances that even if I somehow (chances are bleak given the security issue) manage my way in the flat's basement, there is no gurantee that a proper BT Opensource box would be identifiable.
Alternately, I've checked every piece of equipement running through the lines and nothing seems to be a problem so far....what should I do? Obvoiusl;y I want to avoid (if psbl) to fish out pounds for no fault of mine!
PS: The flat is rented, do you think my landlord might take ownership of this issue per chance?

    Hi Khannas13,
Welcome to the forum. I can test your line for you if you like. Please could you email me your BT account details and a link to this thread? My email address can be found by clicking on my profile.

  • Main Socket Not Working, But Line is via Another L...

Our main socket is not working -- ie, when a phone is plugged in, there is no signal/dial tone.  However, the line still works via a line box in another room.  Is this a BT fault?  If not, how can I get it fixed?  Thanks.

    Hi Elsiejean
It is possibly not a fault some properties/businesses have multiple service points/sockets in, you can check this by calling BT and request to check this, did you pay a connection charge? if not BT will have carried out a check on the property prior to you moving in and for example may have found multiple lines so the main one you say that does not work may have been ceased meaning an engineer/installation charge would apply and the latter which you say worked may have just been a stopped line or takeover connection hence they choose to use that one,i could be wrong if it's only one line your main point may be broke does the working socket have a BT openreach logo on or is it a extension.also BT have supplied you as agreed so if you do need an extension or other line already present activating you would have to pay 127.99

  • My ipod wont charge on laptop but will charge on mains socket any suugestions how to rectify this problem

  • Speed and main socket

problem is impossibly slow speed. Stats show v high noise (17). When I've plugged everything into the test socket the phone as well as BB stops working.
    What can this mean?
Also, I have a sky adapter thing (sorry not technical) from the main socket - does this have anything to do with slow speed?
I have contacted custhelp.com but haven't heard back. This is getting quite urgent.
    Any help much appreciated.

It will help if you post your stats and also the results of the bt speed test.
Firstly thing to note is that it is not noise you are seeing as 17 I suspect but the noise margin. This should normally be nearer 6 but there are reasons why it could differ somewhat.
What you are looking for to see if you have an issue with your downstream connection speed and what the speed test says your IP profile value is set to.
If you have had a bad sync due to line issues then this would explain the high margin reading and you will fine that either your downstream sync rate is lower than it was previouslly OR it could be at a normal value but the IP profile value is a lot lower than it (it is normal for it to be somewhat lower for example a sync rate of 1152 is required for a profile of 1000 under the most common method currently used (a change is bring rolled out to change this to 88.2% of the sync rate but that is probably not an option you have yet).

  • New Main Socket Faceplate Needed

The existing faceplate of my main phone socket is of the older single piece sort. I want to get a new split 2-piece type fitted so that I can fit a 'Broadband Accelerator' plate. The existing plate & wiring is probably the original '60s installation.
Can I get a BT engineer to call and fit a new socket without my call routing to some help desk in India? I need to speak to someone who knows BT phones. The staff at  the help centre merely read off pages from a script.

It will cost you £127.99- they sell them in Maplin http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=384026 it costs less than a tenner so certainly cheaper than BT Openreach. It comes with the back box and you push the wires into the terminals with the IDC inserter, also comes with all fixings required to fix to wall etc- this is the current master socket used by openreach.
Hope this saves you some cash!

  • No main socket

Can anyone help with this problem.
My phone line is dead and I cannot make or receive calls. I understand that I should test my phone equipment using the test socket. I do not have a test socket - all sockets have a base plate only with no provision for a test socket. I am anxious to avoid unnecessary charges by BT but cannot check that my phone equipment is not faulty.

Thanks to both for your responses. BT calling tomorrow and I hope that they are able to sort the problem. I live in a bungalow and I fear that the problem may lie in the wiring between entry into the bungalow and the master socket but we will see. Can anyone explain why I still have a broadband service but cannot make or receive calls?
Phone will need two wires , broadband can still work with one wire connected.

  • HT4060 My  first generation Ipad won't allow me to charge it by the mains socket.  This was a replacement as my origional Ipad had a software problem.  I have rebooted it a number of times but still not charging.  Any advice?

My Ipad 3G has decided not to charge.  I have been using the same charger that came with it which worked perfectly until a few days ago.  I have even tried to charge it using my incar charger, but it still won't charge up.  This Ipad is a replacement as my first one had software problems, so I am hoping this can get fixed and not result in another replacement.
I will be grateful for any advice.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • FAULTY ZEN HEADPHONE SOCKETS.

3 people i know had had problems with theres, 2 have taken them back and got new players only to be presented with the same problem re-occuring. I think this is a genuine design flaw with the product. Ive only had mine since december, my friends problems occured after just 2 months! Its a real hassle to send it back & forward to be repaired. Have Creative rectified this problem with its newer models?

"Well it's already being discussed in at least one thread. It's probably best to try and keep any further discussion in that same thread rather than creating new ones. It won't draw any more attention to the situation."
I disagree. Many might not have seen the other references to the message. Many don't read all the messages on the board. Imo problems will occur even with portable players that have the strongest headphone jacks if they are used with headphones with striaght plugs or if they are handled very roughly. Ask a repairman at a repair shop that repairs portable audio, and he will probably tell you that a broken headphone jack is by far the most common problem that he repairs on portable music players, and this has been the case for many years.

  • Main Phone Socket

How much would it cost to move my main socket from upstairs living room to downstairs bedroom? About 25m in stright line.

My master socket is in the bedroom cos the property im in used to be bedsits, however i wanted my master socket in the living room so i could use ethernet cabling to connect my computer to my BT Total Broadband.
I cant use telephone extension lead as this reduces my internet speed to between 0.5 and 1 meg or sometimes totally non-existent. BT told me Bt home hub must be wired direct to main socket.
I have BT vision/Bt total broadband and their phone line which is about £55 p.c.m. and they still want to charge me £199.00 to move one little white box some 50 feet which entails unscrewing box then move cable screw in box..... ridiculous.... surely if u are a regular paying customer with bills up to date it should be free.... would be cheaper to change provider.....................................

  • Faulty battery or faulty charger on N500?

I can't tell if my problem is a battery that has packed up or a faulty charger.
The blue "Lenovo" name lights up on the charger when it is plugged into the mains socket but the blue light does not come on on the laptop to the right of the keyboard. Last time I plugged the charger in the battery light adjacent to the keyboad flashed yellow a couple of times. The laptop won't boot up from the battery as there is no charge in it.
Should I be able to run the laptop off the charger having removed the battery because I can't. (Sorry if that seems like a dumb question). If I should be able to then I guess its the charger that's at fault.

you can replace it by yourself.
call lenovo support line to order battery or take a look at ebay:

  • Can you get multiple phone socket working with BT ...

    Hi,
So I recently had a BT engineer visit, he connected the phone line on the main socket then left. A week later they turned my BT infinity on.
It works great but the main socket is in a different room to my office. I have a phone socket in my office right next ot my pc. But when i plug my router into this socket it fails to produce an internet connection.
Is there a way to get multiple phone sockets working? I would like to move my hub so it is in my office but the socket isnt giving off internet.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

You need to identify the cables connected to the removable faceplate beside the red arrow - these are the extension cables to other sockets in the house.
Connected from here you will get voice only - not data.
If there is more than 1 cable you need to identify the one to your office, remove it and fit the cables to the yellow arrow connections.
You only need to connect the cables connected to 2 & 5 (there may be more connected to the faceplate)
guide on this link  although it does not tell you the 2/5 connection order - I don't think polarity matters - but someone with more knowledge can advise.
A potential problem you may have is if there are other extension sockets connected to your office socket you use (and not the faceplate) as these then are not suitable  for phone - only data.
With DECT phones and the need for just one basestaion not really a probem nowadays but you need to know where each socket in your house is connected from, and what you want to use it for.
If you have any BB problems, BT will also insits you plug the router/modem back into the master socket for all testing.
EDited to add - a krone insertion tool is best for inserting the cables to the socket and has a nice pick to disconnect also. They are easy to use - search you tube for a video.

  • Thinking of switching to BT... but have old main s...

Hi everyone, currently with Sky but thinking of switching to BT. Our phone sockets were installed in the late 1980s.
I have a mains socket coming in downstairs and two extension sockets (both in bedrooms). One of the extensions has the current Sky router connected to it.
If I go with BT I'm assuming the new hub will have to connect to the main socket (ie downstairs). My PC is in one of the bedrooms, there's no option of moving it elsewhere. It's too far away for cabling (plus cats would chew cables and would be a trip hazard). I'm guessing I'd have to connect the PC wirelessly; do BT recommened a card/adaptor for doing this or could I buy my own (if so, which?).
Our current broadband is incredibly slow and quite often drops. The wireless signal isn't that great either downstairs.
I don't want to have to spend out on an engineer and setup costs if this just isn't possible. I'm also a radio ham operator and worried about interference from hubs and any of those horrid PLT devices.
Any help/advice would be most appreciated!

    Hi
As Keith mentions about BT Infinity, if you do go up that route the infinity engineer will re-arrange what is your main socket although prob not install new ones.
You don't have to use the power line adaptors although they are only supplied with vision/you view.
If you just opt for ADSL BB Bt would only change/alter your setup for a price.

  • ADSL Socket V1.0 and Filters

I've been experiencing speed issues/ cutting out for a few weeks. This was temporarily fixed after a "line fault" was diagnosed. After a week or so, I'm now getting an intermittent service again and was told by the online help that I needed to fit a filter.
When my ADSL main socket was fitted some years ago, the engineer hardwired the only telephone extension in the house to the back of the socket with the Home Hub plugged into the left socket on the faceplate. I've read in the forums, if a filter is fitted, I risk "double filtering" and messing up my 'phone operation. Who's correct, Engineer or online assistant?
(A friend of mine in the village is also experiencing similar issues; could be coincidence).

I'm still experiencing intermittent problems. Gave up with online chat and spoke to Tech Help who went through the same old spiel about getting +1 mb so they're fulfilling their contract and line test shows no issues over last 14 days.
What is actually happening is that my Sonos cuts out and won't even play radio. Web pages slow to download. So, I unplugged any ancilliaries from the hub (and the phone, just in case), hard wire the laptop and repeatedly run the BT Wholesale test which gives me a download speed of between 2.36 and 3.38 after 11 tries. U/L was 0.0 to 0.14 but mostly 0.0 something. Ping consistently 0.0. I Ran iplayer speed checker which gave me a download of 0.73mb and streaming speeds varying from 0 to  0.68mb. The BT.com tester wouldn't even run suggesting line too slow or web page issues. I did this using Google Chrome as the BT guy suggested that it was something to do with my browser but made no comment that my Sonos, desktop, smart TV, laptop and ipod must share the same issue. I normally use IE.
Today is all fine and dandy. Just ran tests:
    BT Wholesale D/L 3.39, U/L 0.38, however Ping latency 47.13 (is this a clue?)
    iplayer D/L 3.3, streaming consistently 3.3
    "BT Help" D/L 3.33, U/L .36
I've a feeeling that I especially experience issues if it's raining and or windy but this could just be coincidental.
Sorry for the length of this post but I'm getting so frustrated that BT keep fobbing me of and I'd really like to know if it is actually me not them!
