Faulty logic boards installed in the 2013 MacBook Air?

Just discovered the logic board in my 2013 MacBook Air, only one year old, has to be replaced. Computer will not boot up. Anybody else seeing this problem?

squillo,
A logic board failure can indeed be frustrating! If the computer is within it's one year warranty or you have Apple Care, Apple will be able to take care of you at no charge! I have a few friends with 2013 MacBook Airs with no issues. Can you be more specific about the model. Most of the time Apple will have two to three release refreshes a year and the hardware is different.
Thanks,
Ludeth

• Improving the 2013 Macbook Air i7 battery life

Hi
I've checked couple of topics related to this issue seems many people suffer from this problem, i7 8gb ram with 512gb ssd Macbook air has some issues with its battery life it reduced very quickly. I've applied some techniques -like smc reset, deleting launch daemons and agents- and have an improvement in battery performance. Now the point is, when i do the EtreCheck there are many kernel extensions displayed in the report. Is there any way to delete them and slightly improve the battery life?

You can use the new Activity Monitor to determine a unitless "Energy Impact" value:
You can also click the battery icon in your Mac's menu to reveal significant energy hogs (UPS is shown below):
Whereas Apple recently updated their apps to take advantage of Mavericks' energy saving algorithms, few other vendors have. I surmise the prominent "Energy Impact" hall of shame addition to the new Activity Monitor is Apple's subtle way of nudging them into compliance.
Google's plethora of invasive OS X system modifications is a popular reason for excessive battery drain. Google has yet to demonstrate the ability to develop efficient OS X apps, and one can only surmise they are not interested in doing so. If you elect to use Google Chrome or any other poorly implemented OS X programs, you must accept the detrimental effect they will have on performance and battery life.
If you no longer use a Blackberry, uninstall RIM's software. Be sure to follow its uninstallation instructions.

• How well does the 2013 MacBook Air 13" Handle Adobe Creative Cloud Program's?

How Well Does The 13" MacBook Air Handle The Adobe Creative Cloud Apps?
I'm A Visual Communication Student But I Would Like Extremely Portable Setup Hence The MacBook Air 13", The Main Program's I Use Are:
Photoshop
InDesign
Illustrator
And I Also Use Dreamweaver & After Effects From Time To Time.....
How Would A Top Spec 2013 13" Air Cope Running These Program's??

What about the backpack? Did you have it in one often?
College and notebooks = backpacks usually 9 times out of 10, was that the case?
Your MacBook Air doesnt like roommates in your backpack
Many collects students or people in general are fond of using non-idealized backpacks (without a padded laptop compartment) along with their books. Sandwiching books around your notebook etc. is an extremely bad idea and can leads to your LCD screen being destroyed when heavy textbooks are pressing against same, or when dropping your backpack, these books slam into your Macbook causing great potential for damage.
~"large white blotch and pixilated lines running down the screen."
That indicates a significant impact.
~~"They kept telling me it was "excess pressure". I told them it was impossible, it would be normal pressure"
What do you mean by "normal pressure" ANY pressure to the LCD is abnormal pressure.

• ***CALLING ALL MACBOOK AIR USERS*** Will the base model of the 2013 Macbook Air 11" be enough for my needs?

Ok,
This is my first post to this forum.
I have a Late 2011 i5 Macbook Pro. I used this last year during college but the weight was just unbearable. I have decided this year to upgrade to a Macbook Air. Here is my question.
I am starting uni and will be studying Nursing and so I will not be using any heavy software or progaming etc.
The only thing I will use is Office for Mac and browsing. I normally keep around 15 browser tabs open whilst I research.
I also like to download so I would also like Vuse on my Macbook too. I own an external hardrive and so memory isnt a big deal (unless it makes a difference to the performance of the mac itself, Sorry im not great with this stuff)
Do you guys think the base model of the 11" Macbook Air (1.3ghz, 4GB ram, 128GB SSD) will be enough for my needs or do you think I would need to custom build it (1.7ghz, 8GB ram, 128GB SSD)?
My boyfriend thinks for what im using it for the base model will be fine but I dont want to get it to find that its not enough as my main concern is lag but I also do not want to pay extra for something which isnt going to be fully used (ie my current Macbook Pro).
For those of you who do have the 11' Macbook air, how are you finding it? Also, this will be my main computing device, I am selling my Pro but am thinking of buying the wireless keyboard and trackpad so I can connect to an extenal monitor whilst im at home.
Thank you guys in adavnce for any answers.

I too have a 2011 mackbook pro and I also have a mid 2012 mackbook air 128 gb ssd and 4 gb ram , I am probably goint to sell the pro because I just don't use it anymore . If you intend to do heavy multi tasking 8gb ram as suggested by a previous poster might be worth the extra money.

• Does the new (2013) macbook air have the same structure and size as the original?

I just recently purchased the new 2013 13" macbook air and was looking into getting a case. Wanted to know if i need a different case for the 2013 macbook air? Please respond ASAP!!

Actually... if by "original".... you actually mean "original", the answer would be no. The original Air was released in 2008 and has a significantly different format than the second generation:

• Can a faulty logic board kill a hard drive?

Could Apple's faulty Logic Board be the cause of my iBook's HD demise?
I have an iBook G3, Power PC 750 @ 800 MHz, running Mac OS X 10.2.1. A year or so ago I had to send it back to Apple to get the logic board replaced because the one they originally put in was faulty. Since getting it back, the iBook's not been the same -- frequent crashes, failed start ups, Desktop folders displaced upon start up, etc., ad nauseam. Disk Utility showed no problems when I'd run the repair procedure. The Hardware Test CD that shipped with the iBook showed no problems either.
Last week the iBook nose dived. Desktop folders were scattered, software programs weren't functioning correctly, and I couldn't move and/or trash folders. I ran Disk Utility again which now reported "Invalid Node Structure." It began rebuilding "B-Tree Catalog," subsequently reporting the disk was repaired.
Upon restart, the symptoms worsened, and within an hour my hard drive no longer mounted. Using the install CD at start up (holding the "C" key, of course), I'd get the flashing question mark, then the screen would flash, then I'd get the prohibatory sign, then after a little bit the CD would start.
Under Disk Utility my HD showed up as a generic Media, ATA, internal, Master something (whereas before it was a Sony something or other with one volume listed beneath). Nor could I re-install the OS X software because my HD didn't show as a destination disk.
I performed all the start up key commands offered as solutions in these forums and elsewhere (pram, nvram, power unit reset, safe mode, single user mode, verbose mode, open firmware ala mode). Open Firmware would not show my HD when using the command to list the directories. I even got creative but to no avail (BTW, "fix-this-expensive-piece-of-junk" is not a valid Open Firmware command). I even took out the additional RAM chip that shipped with the computer. The problem persisted.
Then I drove 2.5 hours and dropped $100 for DiskWarrior. Another 2.5 hours later DW was a "No go". Starting from the the DWarrior CD (holding the "C" key, of course), I didn't get beyond the "prohibatory sign." Alsoft's tech support Rep was very responsive, and offered various suggestions (thanks Marc!), and he finally concluded that there is an obvious hardware problem with my computer.
I have no other FireWire computer running Mac OS X to use as a host to target my iBook (I have an iMac maxed out running 9.2.2 -- had to resurrect it from the dead as well - whole 'nuther dilemna!). So, I bought an external FW drive, installed the 10.2.1 software that shipped with my iBook, and ran DiskWarrior from there to fix my internal HD. Nothing. The HD doesn't show as a repairable drive. Obviously it's toast - burned, baby, burned.
So I figured I could at least use the external drive to run the iBook. I then installed all the software from the "restore" CDs, rebooted, only to enjoy screens full of fine gray lines, and frozen screens, and screens of green and red and blue and purple and yellow lines. YUM!. This is the same junk that Apple supposedly fixed by replacing my logic board last year.
My iBook is again useless, and six months beyond Apple's Logic Board Replacement Program's "3-year from date-of-purchase" criteria. Frustrated beyond explanation, I'm beginning to regret my decision to "Think Different."
I apologize if this post comes across as a rant. That's not my intention. I'm very disappointed, and I wanted to detail my predicament thoroughly as to eliminate the "did you hold the 'xyz' key" responses. Trust me, I read and tried them all.
All this said, I iterate my question. Could Apple's obviously faulty Logic Board be the cause of my iBook's HD demise?
Also, is a Logic Board something I can purchase and replace myself?
Thanks for your time.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions. I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles.
Truthfully, I would question whether the iBook with both a dead hard drive and another bad logic board is worth the cost of repair.
My hard drive acted up when my iBook G3 800 Mhz came back from its second logic board repair. I invested in DiskWarrior, and it brought it back a couple of times, but, ultimately, I had to do an Archive and Install to regain use of my computer. That was in July of 2004, and it's still working fine (knocking vigorously on wood).
It is my belief that sometimes the trip to and from the repair facility for the logic board repair involves too much jostling for the hard drive to tolerate it well.
If you really want to get it fixed instead of buying a newer portable, I would recommend that you check out DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California. They do free diagnostics and will do the repair on the logic board for about the same amount you would have to pay to just buy one. They also do hard drive replacements/upgrades (scroll down on the page). I would ask for a little bit of a break on the installation fee for the hard drive if they have it open to repair the logic board, anyway. DT & T also gives a six-month warranty on the repairs.
Good luck!.

• I am unable to install Virtual Machines on my Mid-2013 MacBook Air

Dear Apple Support Community,
I have recently moved away from a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro to a new Mid-2013 MacBook Air. As much as it pains me, I have a need to install a virtual machine running Windows 7 in order to utilize an application called vSphere. The vSphere web interface is too unreliable to use via any web browser, so running a Windows VM is the only way forward.
However, when using VMWare Fusion 5 (I know 6 is available, but I do not have a license for it) or VirtualBox (very latest version) I receive an error which states that my CPU is not 64-bit compatible. I was under the impression that since Snow Leopard (10.6) was release that Mac OS was fully 64-bit. My MacBook Air is currently running Mavericks (10.9.1). It has a 1.3GHz Intel Core i5 CPU.
I read that Apple restricts access to the EFI firmware settings, as I originally thought it was a case of enabling Virtualization capabilities on the processor. To further add to the dilemma my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro has no issues running VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox, so I am at a loss as to why I am unable use these virtualization platforms on my new Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I remember reading somewhere that the new macbook air's from 2013 have a 64 bit core i5 4250u processors.
Also intel mentions it here:

• Logic board Failure after 2 years - Macbook Pro 13''

Hi! Does anyone had problems regarding logic board failure on Macbooks Pro 13''?
I've bought mine 2 years ago and it started to fail. I took it to the technical support and was told that the logic board was damaged and it had to be changed. The warranty expired last november, so I have to pay for it. The problem is the logic board costs almost the price of a new macbook pro.
It is not possible that Apple think it is ok that a notebook that expensive lasts only two years.
I'm in Brazil and here there is no Apple store. So I'll probably have to buy another laptop ( and sadly I don´t know if I'm going to buy a mac again... not with it lasting as little and being the parts so expensive. )

I don't have the problem, but it's been percolating on another discussion for several years now:
