Faulty Macbook install

Hi folks.
I can't install Logic express 8 on my macbook. The macbook (2ghz intel w/2 gig of Ram)exceeded the spec required. Eash time i try to install I get a windon coming up saying "there was an error with the install, please try again" I do, repeatably but get nowhere. In between each attempt I erase all traces of logic from the system, so as not to coonfuse teh poor thing but to no avail. Below is a cull from the installer log:
Jan 19 23:26:58 anni-hamley-jenkins-computer : BomFileError 5: Input/output error - ./Applications/Logic Express.app/Contents/Resources/German.lproj/Logic Express Help/Logic Express 8 Benutzerhandbuch.pdf

Jan 19 23:26:58 anni-hamley-jenkins-computer : Install failed: Some files for LogicExpress may not have been written correctly.

Jan 19 23:26:58 anni-hamley-jenkins-computer : It took 151.006674 seconds to unsuccessfully install "Logic Express" (15 pkg(s))
might it be tripping up on installing some German language parts of the program? If so why?
thanks in advance
Mike

if I get an external dvd drive, will macbook recognize it via USB?
Also, can you please explain 'copying DVD to the MB'. What does MB stands for and how do I copy the leopard disk to MB.
I am sorry this is the first time that I have tried changing the hard drive in my mac and do not not know much about it.

  • How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with?

How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with? I'm planning on getting a new Macbook sometime this fall. I'll probably be a light user, mostly internet, email, and your occasional Letter/Envelope.
Are their any other options that I'll want to make sure that I get?
Oh, and this will also be my very first Mac.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

In the link Alvin Ray posted it shows the different configurations that can be used in RAM. Officially Apple states that the MacBook supports 2 GB Ram. It can hold 4 GB but only uses 3 GB. The 4 GB would only benefit the matched pair use for optimum graphics. Unless you do a lot of very graphic intensive work 3 GB should be fine.

  • 14 out of 15 MAcbooks installed snow leopard succesfully. One machine keeps spitting out the CD! Why? What can be done to upgrade machine?

Trying to upgrade Os X. 14 out of 15 MacBooks installed succesfully. One machine keeps spitting out the CD! Why? What can be done to upgrade machine?

Sounds like the optical drive may be on it's way out. It should be possible to connect the Mac to one of the others by firewire and do the installation by booting from the install disc in the donor Mac, then choosing the remote HD as the target when prompted.

  • I installed Office:mac 2011 on my new iMac running 10.8.3 and discovoed my file transfer from my old macbook installed Office:mac 2088. Now I have both installed and none of the office apps work - I keep getting the same error message

I recently purchased an iMac to replace my 2008 macbook.
I used migration assitant to transfer all of my macbook files to the iMac. I noticed that I had the old 2008 version of Office:mac 2008 on the iMac and decided to install Office:mac 2011 which installed successfully.
However, now I can't open excel or word or powwerpoint now using either 2008 or 2011.... I just get an error message saying there was an error and the app had to close. It offers to send a report to Microsoft.
I tried moving Office:mac 2008 to trash but this didn't resolve the issue.
Can anyone help (I am not a really sohpisticated user so be gentle)
    Thanks Dave

    Hello Dave,
This forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to Microsoft Office in any way. I suggest you post Office related questions on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products.

  • [SOLVED] X11 hid support broken on fresh macbook install

    Hi!
The solution was elementary indeed, I was missing xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse. (looooooooooool)
What bugs me though, is how this could happen to an already working system. From what I remember I didn't touch those drivers on my previuos system, I guess I installed them and forgot about them, but why would they break from a system update? Anyway, I guess that's nobody's concern by now. Thread solved.
Old title: X11 hid support completely broken after system update. Now, I've completely reinstalled the system but the error remains. Please read the post below.
I've a problem with X11 support for input devices since running pacman -Syu 2 days ago. This post contains error logs and a description of my attempts to counter the problem. The hardware is a MacBook, first generation. I'm a novice linux user but seasoned with GNU and a quick learner. The solution to this might be simple, but google didn't give me anything usable. All forum threads I found were either unsolved or irrelevant.
This is what has passed. (long story short, may or may not be relevant, my current problem is explained below)
    * After the first reboot since the system update, X11 didn't give me anything except a movable cursor. The screen was completely black using the xmonad wm, and when using twm, it was completely distorted with blue patterns. I start searching for sources of the trouble.
    * ALSA and pommed complain about driver errors during boot. I can't read the messages because they skip by too quickly. I remove them from rc.conf because I prefer dealing with one problem at a time.
    * modprobe complained about framebuffer_blacklist.pacsave having an erroneous extension in /etc/modprobe.d. It actually loaded both the .conf and the .pacsave. I tried swapping between this .pacsave (is it the same or opposite of a .pacorig, btw?) and the .conf. Obviously modprobe stopped complaining when there was no erroneous extension, but I didn't notice it fixing anything else. I'm unsure whether the framebuffer is even relevant.
    * I decide that the problem didn't have anything to do with modprobe. I don't know what happened exactly during this phase, but for some strange reason, the graphics cease to be jumbled. twm starts the default programs, but is not interactive. I could move the mouse, but no mouse buttons were working. Keyboard not working at all.
    * I decide to wipe X11 and hal. I also rm -rf:ed /usr/share/hal, /etc/hal, /usr/share/X11 and /etc/X11 (yeah, I got angry).
    * Reinstalled X11 and hal. Also rm -rf:ed /usr/share/hal, /etc/X11 and /usr/share/X11 (I got really angry). Stuff works now! However, setxkbmap made everything break again, both mouse and keyboard. I read the output of startx and realise evdev hasn't been loaded, since /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev is missing. The whole folder structure /usr/share/X11/xkb is actually missing. I randomly hit the target and run pacman -S xkeyboard-configure, which creates the folder structure along with the evdev ruleset.
    * The keyboard does not work when using evdev. Temporarily renaming it so that it doesn't get loaded fixes the problem. If I'm not mistaken this makes X11 revert to not-hotplugged keyboard and mouse preferences in xorg.conf (which is auto-generated). The keyboard and mouse then works again (but, obviously, not setxkbmap, and I really need input hotplugging as a laptop user).
    * It's getting late, so I shutdown and go to bed.
Waking up today, neither keyboard nor mouse is working - also when not using evdev! I've really no idea where to go from here. I've some output for you to analyze:

Alright, I got fed up and decided to reinstall the system.
Only installed wireless_tools, madwifi, hal, xorg and xf86-video-intel.
Edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf to select the intel video driver.
The mouse and keyboard are still frozen.
Here are some much cleaner Xorg.0.log, xorg.conf and startx_output.log files, I hope it will be easier for any readers of this post to find errors here:
    Output of startx:
    hostname: Host name lookup failure
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.4956

  • Why won't my MacBook install new software updates?

When I click on Software Update it says "Install 11 items." Among them are iTunes 10.6.3, Safari, Garage Band Update, iPhoto Update and so on.
When I click "Install 11 Items" it doesn't install anything. It says I must restart my computer to finish installation. So, I restart. Afterwards it asks for my password, I figure for installations.
But nothing is changed, and when I click updates I get the same 11 program updates. This has happened at least seven times in the past seven tries.
Plus, my battery is stuck. It won't come out of the computer. Though the abve issue is most troubling.
    Thanks.

Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) is a purchased product, you can get it from the Mac app store. If your MacBook can support it though you may want to wait and purchase Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) which will become available sometime later this month. It will also be a purchase, but it is not necessary to get Lion first, and it is going to be $20 rather than the $30 for Lion. You can find out if your MacBook will run it on this page.
That security update can be found here. The Java update is available here. You can search for other updates on this page.
I don't know why the installer is not performing as it should. It is highly unlikely that the battery has anything to do with your installation issues.
    Best of luck.

  • Macbook install problems

    Hi,
I am new to arch, but have successfully installed it numerous times on my Thinkpad. I wish to install it alongside OSX on my macbook 4,1. The laptop has no optical drive (broken), but I have been booting from USB without any problems. I have partitioned the HDD and installed all kinds of other distros (mint 14, ubuntu 12.10, 10.10), which all work, except they do not allow for either ethernet or wifi connection, so while booted in any Linux distro, I am connection-less. When I try to boot arch from a live USB drive (using rEFIt), I encounter a problem immediately with GRUB. The output exactly:
    GNU GRUB version 1.99~rcl
Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.
    grub>
I have been unable to solve this issue and/or figure out the connectivity issues concerning wifi/ethernet (which work fine when booted into OSX)
    Please help!

I had to convert the official ISO before it would boot happily as a USB on my used Air I've just got, I followed the instructions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UE … B_from_ISO including the suggestion below to use rEFInd instead of gummiboot and it worked for me.

  • 2 x Faulty Macbooks!

I am just about to send my second macbook back and got a full refund from my supplier..
The first one I took delivery off two weeks ago, after about 30mins it became unbarebly hot, the trackpad kept freezing and it kept lokcing up and was generally clunky, I installed core duo temp, and saw that it was running at 69 degrees celcius and between 1 and 1.5Ghz, so my old G4 1.5ghz was faster...
I sent it back and got a replacement last Thur, and guess what... exactly the same thing has happend, it even marked my table at home I had it sat on it got so hot... anyway this one is boxed and I'm waiting for it to be collected, and I'm getting a full refund from my supplier.
I think I'll wait for a nice proved mac laptop before I upgrade... thank god I didnt sell my trusty Powerbook G4 straight away!!

69 degrees seems to be on the high end of normal. And it runs at lowered speeds to save energy and ramps up when needed. In this way, it's actually more intelligent that previous Macs. It should not be slower than your PBG4 unless you have less ram or you'ew running Rosetta-required programs such as MS Office or Adobe programs. If it's really clunky, bring it in to an Apple Store. Have then replicate the issue and they'll take care of you.

  • Does Apple replace faulty MacBook Pro with retina in Asia?

I bought a MacBook Pro with retina display in July 2012. Recently my MBPr developed some issues. I feel like something moves (or slides to and fro) inside the Mac when I take out the computer from the bag and hold it in my hand. I don't know whether I have been able to explain the issue as I'm not a native English speaker. I contacted the retailer I bought the Mac from. They told me they can only change the faulty parts if there are any, but they cannot replace the Mac for a new one because  Apple does not replace any Mac in Asia. The prerogative is only in Asia, Europe, Australia and the US. Is it really the case? If things turn out that Apple cannot make good on its warranty without replacing the Mac what shall they do in that case? Could you pls explain?

As best I know, after 14 days Apple will repair your MBP if it is within the warranty period for free.  In rare instances, if they have not been able to repair it after several attempts, they may replace it.  I suggest contacting Apple and ship your MBP to the for inspection/repair or bring it to an Apple store or an Apple reseller.
    Ciao.

  • Faulty Macbook with symptom: Two screens in single screen

I just got a defect macbook pro 15" from aprox 2007-2008. It is not possible to get repairs on warrenty, so I want to try and fix it myself as cheap as possible (as it is an upgrade from my macbook).
The current OS installation on the machine is Windows 7 (not with Bootcamp). Starting the machine goes fine(the sound and the gray screen), but when it starts loading drivers and checking hardware and such (not quite sure what it actually does) the display is split horizontally and not pretty. It is almost like a vertical interlacing gone bad, where half of the "laces" are scaled down, and put on the top part of the screen, and the other half of the "laces" are put on the lowerpart. So the display is split in half and are showed on one screen. Both of the displays are striped with blank pixel stripes from top of the display to the bottom of the display. The computer still runs fine (it has not crashed for the few times I've started it and tried some fidgeting) only that there are these twin screens in the single display.
What I'm wodering is if anyone else have encountered this kind of problem, and if there is a fix to it? Can this be an artifact caused by bad soldering or overheating of the graphics card ? Is it something that might be fixed with baking, or some other simple or cheap solution ?
The macbook has been evaluated by a store, and it said that a logic board switch was needed (kernelpanics and such). I don't see the reason why a faulty logic board would cause this screen artifact. So I thought that the store just found that a switch would be the simplest solution, and not thought it was worth the trouble to try to repair or resolder or something.
    -Snuku

I did a "f* it, I'll just try" thing, and baked the logic board.
This solved the screen issue, screen is back to normal without any artifacts.
Have not checked if it solved the kernelpanics and crashes. Going to reinstall some mac os and hope for the best.
Hoping someone might have future use of this, to save a broken macbook.

  • Can I boot imac from macbook install disk 1?

I'm trying to install BootCamp on my intel iMac but it keeps failing at the disk partition, now having repaired permissions and verified the disk the help file tells me to boot my iMac from a startup disk and then load a disk utility. I can't find my Install Disk 1 for my iMac but I do have one for my intel Macbook. Is there a utility prog that sits on the disk that is not device dependent or would it just not work? thanks in advance if anybody can help me....

    Hi,
the OSX discs that come with the Intel-Macs are usually bound to this Mac or at least this line of Mac and do not work on other Macs.
Therefor your chances are not good to use the MacBook disc.
Sorry to say you have to start a thorough search for the iMac disc.

  • Macbook installing window vista

    Hi everyone,
I am new to Mac and just got a new Macbook, so I decide I will install a Window Vista on it so I can have something as a backup if I can't get used to Mac OS. However, when I install the Window using bootcamp, I forgot with partition is the one with Mac OS on and I choose the one that say "74.9 GB[Bootcamp]" and install the window Vista.
The problem is, after the comouter was restart, it can only recognize Window Vista and there is no way that I can choose the Mac OS. Did I choose the wrong partition to format or it is normal?
And the worst problem is I couldn't reload the Mac OS on the computer again, the computer won't read the disc nor can I go to the BIOS setup manuel to boot from the installation disc.
Please kindly reply, thanks a lot.

Might want to sign on to MS and d'load the release candidate for Windows 7, it's open public beta and good until 3/2/2010 that's month/day/year. Very nice OS and should run great on your Mac.

Just to mention it: According to this post, the nvidia driver doesn't work when efi-booting, so you may have to use bios-compatibility, if you need this driver working.

  • Are the boot camp drivers on the Macbook install disk only...

...for the macbook? Or does it have the drivers for other macs too like the imac.
    Thanks

Thanks in bunches, guys. Almost everything is working, I need help in one more things that's driving me nuts.
I've been able to install sound, bluetooth, and I'm able to do a right click. But for some reason, I still can't scroll and the buttons on the keyboard (i.e. the eject button), still won't work.
There are two trackbad drivers. One is called multitouch and one just called track pad. Which one of those should I install?
