Faulty MacBook Pro?

I have bought my Macbook Pro in late 2006. I very much enjoyed it until April 2007, where it simply stopped booting. It would power up, and then show me the grey screen, the apple, and the spinning circle. I returned it to Apple in Frankfurt am Main in Germany, who it took 6 weeks to repair the notebook. Turned out they replaced the entire mainboard.
In September 2007, the problems started again. The MBP simply wouldn't boot anymore; just the grey screen and the spinning circle. Obviously I returned it to Apple again, this time in Veenendaal in the Netherlands. It took them 3 weeks to repair my notebook, again the mainboard was replaced.
Now, October 2007, as I was just considering running to the store to buy Leopard my MBP suddenly is showing the exact same problem; it won't boot anymore. I reset the System Management Controller, the PRAM, all wouldn't bother.
I am getting pretty frustrated to be honest, which I believed to be the perfect notebook now turns out to die on me every couple of months. (And ofcourse on those moments when I need it the most) As a student who can't spend €2000 every year I feel terrible.
Anyone else who has had a similar experience or have any suggestion on what I can do?

My machine has behaved similarly (except no video). Currently I am having the motherboard replaced - see my post on same here - I suspect the problem is due to heat dissipation failure. I have had two laptops die before (not macs) in one case the HD had warped due to heat and in the other a SIMM failed. The latter was a ultraslim model. When I took my Macbook apart it struck me that the position of the HD and the fan was such that it would be very difficult to dissipate HD heat effectively. Both fans are tucked pretty tightly under the MB but sicne the superdrive is rarely used for long periods it doesn't generate significant heat. I find it hard to believe that Apple isn't aware of this as a design flaw. Obviously there is a certain failure rate on all product lines but the internet references to MBP failure suggest to me anecdotally that Apple should be concerned. In business, repeat business is everything.

  • Does Apple replace faulty MacBook Pro with retina in Asia?

I bought a MacBook Pro with retina display in July 2012. Recently my MBPr developed some issues. I feel like something moves (or slides to and fro) inside the Mac when I take out the computer from the bag and hold it in my hand. I don't know whether I have been able to explain the issue as I'm not a native English speaker. I contacted the retailer I bought the Mac from. They told me they can only change the faulty parts if there are any, but they cannot replace the Mac for a new one because  Apple does not replace any Mac in Asia. The prerogative is only in Asia, Europe, Australia and the US. Is it really the case? If things turn out that Apple cannot make good on its warranty without replacing the Mac what shall they do in that case? Could you pls explain?

As best I know, after 14 days Apple will repair your MBP if it is within the warranty period for free.  In rare instances, if they have not been able to repair it after several attempts, they may replace it.  I suggest contacting Apple and ship your MBP to the for inspection/repair or bring it to an Apple store or an Apple reseller.
    Ciao.

  • Faulty Macbook Pro, crashing twice per day!

    Hi guys!
im having hard time here with my pro,
at least twice per day it crashes, 90% of the time it just stop, the sound goes on loop, and the only way to recover it is to keep the start button until it turns off. 10% of the times the screen goes black and appears the error message that suggest to restart the system.
once i went trought the errors of the kernel panic but i wasnt able to find what it was,
    any suggestion??

I am also guessing you are using the 9600M GT graphics card? Try switching over to the 9400M if you don't need the additional power. It reduces temps dramatically and I have yet to experience a thermal shutdown with the 9400M enabled. Take the macbook pro into an apple store or CERTIFIED Apple Registered Technician and have the heatsink reseated onto the CPU. This should allow for better heat transfer from the CPU to the heatsink, and overall reducing your overheating problem.

  • Faulty Macbook Pro 15" body

    Hello everyone,
not sure if this is happening with many Macbooks Pro but when Im closing the display, the gap between the display and main body isn't the same on either sides of my laptop. It seems like it might be problem with the hinge or maybe the body have got deformed?? Not sure, whether I should take it to Apple store.
Just to clear things up, I never dropped it or anything like it.
Here are some photos I took of it:

    Any thoughts?

Take it to an Apple Store or AASP and ask to have it adjusted.

  • Faulty MacBook Pro scree/display

I have a MacBook Pro and lately the screen looses resolution suddenly. Straight lines up and down appear and the monitor/screen looses sharpness and takes on a tinted color, it could be green, yellow or blue or rotate among these colors. Help please!!! How may I fix this problem? Is it a hardware problem?

Yes it is a hardware problem and must go to Apple or AASP to be repaired. Nothing you can do as a User to fix it.

  • Unibody clicking underneath, faulty MacBook Pro?

    Hi,
I have a 2 month old 15" unibody MacBook Pro, and when I press on the underside of the unibody case (in one area) it gives-in a bit... and makes a clicking noise (kinda like a high-pitched tick). Doesn't sound right, and doesn't happen in any other place.
Does it happen for you too? How can this be fixed? It seems something is loose. I still have warranty.
It seems to be limited to the area marked by the red circle in the image below - and doesn't click under trackpad, or keyboard. Here's where it is from the bottom:
And to give you perspective, a view from the top:

You can't possibly be serious I mean I know you are since you've just mentioned ..but wow ..
Your cooling performance degrades exponentially over time because of dust buildup at the fans and exhaust blades ..

  • When is Apple going to provide us with a non faulty MacBook Pro?

Last month kept me on my feet constantly as I visited the Apple store few times. I`ve seen 8 notebooks. All of them faulty (not only the whine but also keyboard defects, speakers etc.)
Since I am a very stubborn person I decided to buy one, no matter how much time it will take. But I can`t. I simply can`t find a nice, working MBP.

Mario, I am with you cous (short for cousin...I am of Hungarian ancestry).
I have been looking, feeling, testing MBPs for the last two months. I have three stores within two miles of my house that carry Apple products.
I have played with probably ten 15" MBPs, and I have yet to see one I could buy.
Of the three 17" MBPs I have seen, only one is anywhere near acceptable in terms of heat (to me).
Do I need statistical proof after this experience?
I sent back a perfectly good Thinkpad T60 (which had the Core-Duo and ran cool and quiet) to make the jump to OSX. I have been waiting....geesh..,over two months now.... 8-(
Anyway, I am going to hang in there. I have faith that Apple will get it right eventually.

  • Repairing/replacing faulty MacBook Pros

I've never had so much buyer's remorse after purchasing an Apple product. I can deal with the reflectiveness of the glass screen (I knew about that when I got it, afterall), but every time I see the light leaks and theater striping, or play Quake 4 and see refresh artifacts, or sit my MBP down next to my perfectly-good-but-useless-to-me 22" Viewsonic display because the Mini DisplayPort doesn't work right, I ask myself why I spent $2,500 on this machine.
Please post your repair/replacement experiences here. Is Apple actually fixing the problems, or just replacing laptops with identical machines that suffer from the same issues? If the latter is the case, what are you planning to do about it? I'm actually considering returning mine for a full refund and getting a desktop machine and an Asus-style netbook.

I ordered my MBP on November 5th, with all the upgrades and options. i struggled with lockups and black screen freezes for a couple of weeks or something before deciding it was a hardware issue and calling AppleCare. They took a week or so to decide what was going on, and when apparently no engineers could explain the problem they just replaced my machine. The second machine arrived the first week of December. It was cured of the lockups and graphics freezes (black screen of death) but the fabric inside the optical drive was not attached properly and the drive itself did not spin up to speed. They replaced it. I just received my 2nd replacement, making it my third since November 5th, and this one appears functional and great in every area except the screen. The screen has the light leaking, which is so bad that it distorts colors on the left side of the screen. This really stands out because the previous two units, for their other flaws, had beautiful screens that were lighted evenly and there was just nothing to complain about in that department.
Apple doesn't appear to be able to ship me a quality computer. I have been an Apple customer since the late 70's. Their computers were always perfect, never had any notable flaws in craftsmanship or function, and while they did break down like any machine or electronics it wasn't for a good many years. What's going on now I don't understand. I don't understand why I gave them all the money they asked for and while they do keep replacing, they can't seem to ship me one that doesn't have a deal-killing flaw.
I'm generally not really picky. Each one of these MBPs has had what I might call minor imperfections that I would never return the computer over, or file a report about. I have not made issue of any of these smaller things. But a non-useable optical drive, a freezing system with non-functional 9600GT chip, those are not something you can live with. That's the functionality being paid top dollar for and it needs to work. And now, to get a screen that is this junky looking.. Leaking light is one thing, but this leaks so bad that black pixels are changed to white or purple along the left side, and the so-dubbed "stage lights" bleeding through create a lot of color distortion on the bottom of the screen. It was the first thing I noticed when I turn the computer on because it is so pronounced.
The crashing of the first computer from the lockups that required forced power downs and boot ups destroyed a year's worth of photos and videos. I even had duplicate copies of each photo/video from my camera and the system managed to corrupt all of them irreparably.
I can't believe I have been saving and waiting years for this, and this is the experience I get.

  • How I can back up my data from macbook pro that its hard drive seems to die soon?

I need your help guys from the whole world.
I am now in Erbil (North Iraq) and there is no apple authorized resellers or anyone who can fix macs, they can destroy them as they try to repair it ( this is what happened      to me recently with My I phone and I pad). So I am left alone to fix it with your global help I hope.
The issue is, I didn't do back up on my mac book pro for over  a year. I woke up 3 days ago, switched my mac and there was this funny pinc ponc noise coming from the lower right hand side of my mac (between track pad and keyboard), the computer was going slow and I wasnt able to do anything even after few restarts. It is always too slow to perform anything and this noise always start after few seconds of starting and keep going. the computer can still function very well on guest account *(safari only) and I don't hear the noise then nor when I press T. But if I try to log in to all my drive or in safe mode I get this noise and none function computer. when I went to disk utility there was message in red to back up my data immediately and take the hard drive to authorized service center.
I checked on internet, you tube  and others..and it seems I have faulty hard drive. Since I am here alone and no service center so I think I will replace it myself. But first thing first i need to back up my precious data. I found few ways of doing this and I wonder if you can give me some tips, advise or any other method to do the back up.
    1) Transfer data on target mode:  I havent done this before but I am thinking to connect my faulty macbook pro to another with firewire, pressing T on the faulty Mac and install Super Duper on the other mac. Then I connect external hard drive to the working mac via USB. And the question is     :      can I transfer the files this way to an external bootable hard drive connected to the working mac     , so the working mac will function as bridge between faulty mac and external hard drive. Also can I do this process through my old none intel based power book(which I am using now)  instead of borrowing macbook from friend?
    2) Buy new hard drive, open my mac and replace the faulty one. then put the faulty one in external inclosure, connect to refurbished mac and transfer data back. Can I do this? will I need to install the mac os from the CD associated with it before I do transfer?
Is there any other way to do this please?

    Hi PlotinusVeritas
where do I download the superdoper please?
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/superduperdescription.html
    its here:
    Download the free trial now!
This simple software is free and very easy to use, yes, it makes a 100% clone of ALL on your HD, everything.
(assuming its not so dead it wont copy).
you only need the free trial version to clone your HD.
can I download it on guest account? this one I can login and seems to function fine.
Then install same on your guest account, that wouldnt matter, since Superduper clones everything (except the recovery partition which you dont need in your case right now).
LaCie is Seagate (lacie doesnt make HD) , yes, that would be fine,  clone your HD ASAP and hope it works.
there is no software fix for HD hardware failure, ......this is why a backup copy of data is so very important all the time, period.

  • Replacement MacBook Pro's camera not working!

Hey there. Faulty MacBook Pro (speakers buzzing, lid not closing properly left side and running a "bit hot" was replaced within the first week- arrived a week after requesting it (original took 48 hours to arrive) and when I transferred the data from the old one via Firewire and started Photo Booth the camera light appeared and for a brief moment I even had a blurred picture which quickly faded.
Now all I get is blackness.
Checked to see what might be different between the two machines and the only thing I can think is that it was still running 10.4.6 as opposed to the one it is meant to replace- which is up to 10.4.7.
HOWEVER- when THAT one came out of the box and I started Photo Booth it presumably ran WELL on the same version! In fact I was so impressed that I uploaded my first photo blog within a few hours!
So- what can be the problem? Could it be that the transferred data was "optimised" for 10.4.7 by the time it was transferred?
Or am I looking at ANOTHER faulty machine? I am getting a bit tired of the rather shoddy treatment I have been receiving from Apple's Asian call centre personnel, and the possibility that I am looking at ANOTHER replacement fills me with TOTAL horror.
Hoping that someone wise here has a simple enough suggestion about what it might be..?

OK- ran hardware test as per manual. Nothing untoward found. So it MUST be a software issue, right?
This is the same MacBook Pro as the other one. Only THIS one was asked to use Firewire to transfer data from the one it replaces instead of me first registering it.
    Anyone have this?
Camera kind of works (flashes into dark sepia but quickly fades to either complete black or some white spots from lights) and green light IS on when it should be.

  • 20" Display to vibrant on MacBook Pro

    Hello -
I have a MacBook pro and a 20" ACD - the display is to vibrant - the colours do not seem natural or neutral. The MacBook display seems more neutral.
I had a colour expert in to calibrate the ACD and the display on the MacBook. We could not get a 'match' using hardware calibration - the Monaco spider thing.
He suggests it may be a defective display.
Anyone else here of a similar issue?

I've got the same problem. My MacBook Pro seems more neutral but at the same time washed out in contrast to the 23" ACD. It must either be some graphic card related isse or a faulty MacBook Pro display.
    Regards,
    Roman
P.S.: What are your MacBook Pro's and ACD's serial numbers, btw?

You put the internal drive in an enclosure. If you choose to keep the drive, you don't need to erase it.
