Faulty modem?

I've been playing a lot of MW3 lately and i've noticed an interesting trend,
Now i think it's safe to say that MW3 has a detailed history of lag comp messing up people who have fast connections, something which always affects me.
My modem syncs at 80Mbps down and 20up, and from the modem statistics i am on fastpath. I play on ps3 with the ps3 connected to the hh3 ethernet port. I always assumed that the lag was due to the over zealous lag comp, but now i'm not so sure.
I noticed that if I reboot the modem before playing then I can play the game with a flawless connection for 2 hours, after which the lag monster starts creeping in. (I know rebooting the modem can mess with the sync rate but it hasnt changed mine)
So is it a case that during the two hours playing the DLM kicks in or bt's p2p throttling kicks in and starts messing with my connection? or is it that after being on for a few hours and a few FEC/HEC errors the modem starts to get flustered? has it got problems clearing it's cache?
thoughts anyone? if anyone wants to try this out and report back that would be great

Hi david, usually when it happens everything else works perfectly, the improvements have really happened over the last week or so, ever since the problems with fifa, bizarrely the game is playing really well now even without a reboot.
Maybe bt have improved their routing for gaming traffic? I don't know whats happened but if bt have made some changes please dont change them back because i finally feel like i'm getting what i pay for, which is the best internet in the country for gaming.
A friend in england who is also on infinity has also reported a drastic improvement in his gaming experience, perhaps it was a fix by the game studio, I'll try a few other games to see what they are like.
For now rest assured that I have no problems, although now that I have said this i fully expect my connection to be **bleep** tomorrow

  • Faulty modem power supply

I understood that faulty equipment would be replaced during a contract period - but after a conversation with a person on the contact us section of this site(via chat) I either have to "go to a computer shop" or renew my contract again for a replacement.
The problem is the power supply on the white openreach modem is fauty - there's a break in the cable very close to the power supply - I have made a temporary repair to get me up and running - but a replacement would be a better long term solution - anyone else have similar experience?
    David.

looks like I was given some bad advice when I renewed my contract a few months ago, I did mention that I was having intermitent problems with the said modem - they said I would have to pay the full price for a new homehub plus delivery - I only just found out where the fault exactly is on the cable - the insulation was fully intact but the copper within had a break - may just try and get a replacement from ebay as suggested, thanks everyone

  • Unable to fax or ad internal modem in tiger 10.4.8

I am attempting to use my fax for the first time in about a year. I go through the steps to set up the internal modem, but it doesn't show up in the "Network Port Configurations" tab under Network in system preferences. Furthermore, when attempting to add a 'fax" in the printer dialogue, there is nothing to select.
Is there a way to reinstall the modem? It seems as if it has gone missing... I have tried several tricks outlined here to make it 're-appear' but they are not working for me. Anyone have any suggestions?

Well, not professing to be an "expert" in this area, I would, nevertheless, be of the mindset that if System Profiler doesn't see your modem, then, as you have postulated earlier, you may have a bad internal connection to the modem board, or the modem is toast.
If you take your computer in to Apple and they diagnose it as a faulty modem board, FWIW, http://hardcoremac.stores.yahoo.net/modems.html offers some used internal modems for a couple of different old-school Macs (like mine). A google search on "internal modem" and whatever the style/model of your computer is, should turn up additional sources for internal modems for your computer, should that be the case.

  • Can't reconnect - Weird modem tones

I connect to the internet using dial-up & the AEBS internal modem. Once connected, it will stay online for maybe 20-40 minutes, then the connection is lost. When I try to reconnect, it just says "Modem dialing" but never connects.
Here is the interesting part: When I listen to what's going on over a speaker phone connected to the same line, I can hear that the modem behaves in two different ways: sometimes it will dial out & then emit horrific sreechy noises; other times it will dial out & emit smooth, non-abrasive tones. If it's screechy, then it connects successfully; if it isn't screechy, then it won't connect & will just hang up after a few seconds.
If I unplug the AEBS for several minutes then try again, sometimes it will work & sometimes it won't. The AEBS has been like this since the day I got it.
Does this sound like a faulty modem? I've tried changing the channel it uses & adjusting the range & other variables, but nothing has helped.

kgny, Welcome to the discussion area!
During the setup of a dial-up connection, the modem goes through several handshakes with the equipment at the ISP. These handshakes test different connection speeds and therefore various sounds.
IMHO, it is impossible to determine whether the AEBS's modem OR your ISP's equipment OR the telephone connection between the 2 is the source of the problem based on your description.
Have you tried directly connecting from your iMac to your ISP using the iMac's internal modem?

  • Speed regularly drops dramatically until modem is ...

Firstly I should state that I'm still in the first 10 days of having BT Infinity so I understand that there may be speed and connection issues.  My connection started at 33Mbps which I was more than happy with.  What I'm finding is that the download speed will suddenly drop to around 0.5Mbps overnight so that each morning I have a connection that is far worse than my previous non-Infinity broadband connection was.  This also happened yesterday evening.  If I do nothing then the speed remains abysmally slow.  If I disconnect and reconnect the modem then the speed goes straight back up to around 30Mbps.
I'm probably not supposed to disconnect and reconnect during the first two weeks but 0.5Mbps is intolerable after paying for this high speed service.
Could this be down to a faulty modem or some other issue?

I called tech support yesterday who put me through to their Infinity specialists.  They told me that the problem is because I'm running a home server here.  I explained that it's not a web server, but just a linux box to distribute services around the computers in the house and to implement firewall, internet content monitoring for children, etc.  I was told the server was reducing my bandwidth from the expected 36MBps to around 30MBps and was also causing the drop in speed due to conflicts between the internal network and the BT Infinity service.  The linux box contains two NICs - one for the internal network and the other to connect to the router which is connected to the modem, so the networks are totally separate.  Regardless of that I've had to disconnect the server for them to run tests for two days.  As expected it hasn't caused the bandwidth to jump up to 36Mbps.  Surprisingly, though, I've had no speed drop since I did this yesterday afternoon - at the moment I think it's just coincidental and am expecting it to drop today at some point but I'll keep this thread posted.  The tech engineer is due to call back tomorrow afternoon.

  • Modem Dropouts

Im getting 2/3 BT Infinity connection dropouts daily, the DSL light on the Openreach Modem goes and then comes back within a few minutes, some days its only once, some days 4/5 times. Ive done a quiet line test and hear not a jot so i assume its not a line, possibly a faulty modem,  i dont know, but i do know this shouldnt be happening, i was rather hoping for a rock solid connection having only switched back to BT in the last few weeks.
Any help you can give would be much appreciated as, with all due respect, ringing India seems to get you nowhere!
p.s. ive also emailed the mods about this in an attempt to get their apparently excellent help too.

The sticker is on the bottom so you'd have to take it off the wall. It'll be a 3B if you've just had it installed. You may as well get an engineer visit booked to look at the fault, if he suspects the modem he's replace it..if he finds a line fault he SHOULD fix it.

  • Can't copy with LaCie Network Attached Storage and Time Capsule/Airport

    Hi,
I bought a Time Capsule to replace my recently faulty modem/router Linksys AG241 and in preparation of buying my first mac in the next few months.
Right now the network is as follows:
    — 1 Linksys AM200 modem connected to the TC by ethernet and set to bridge mode
    — 2 windowsXP pcs attached by ethernet to the Time Capsule
    — 1 NAS (LaCie 2Big Network) attached by ethernet to the Time Capsule
Despite some initial problems configuring the modem in bridge mode, the present problem is the following:
Everytime I try to copy a file (it can be either an 4MB file or an 800MB one) I get this error window:
    — Cannot copy "Filename": the specified network name is no longer available
Even when copying a file from one Share of the disk to another! However, have no trouble copying 1KB file, for example.
I've been searching throughout the internet for some days now but couldn't find any answer.
This LaCie NAS External Disk is ethernet-only and can only be connected to a switch or a router. It worked before with my older modem/router. I changed the ethernet cable by another one and I get the same result.
The Time Capsule is cofigured to distribute IPs through DHCP. Right now, I even have enabled the DHCP reservations to assign a static IP to the NAS, and to the Pcs. STill the same result.
This happens on both pcs. Still haven't tried with a wireless device yet (I don't have one).
Can anyone help me solve this?

Ok. I've ran a test on a friend's network in order to clarify if the LaCie NAS was the hardware causing this issue.
Well, it isn't. The NAS worked fine on this other network setting - which uses a different router, modem and 2 different computers.
The test ocurred in Wireless G, though, not by Ethernet connection with the computers.
*So I guess the problem must be on my Time Capsule or Modem?*
    *Possibly a configuration issue.*
Does anyone has/had some problem connecting Ethernet External Disks on a Time Capsule/Airport that can share some Solution ?
    Please, Help!?

  • Satellite L500: WLan drops out and doesnt work most of the time

hi everyone, i have a toshiba satellite L500 running windows 7. have been using iprimus internet, wirelessly, no problems for a few weeks, before that, was using it via ethernet cable as i didnth ave a wireless modem. my laptop was off charge the other night and went flat, next morning when i woke up and turned it on, it wouldnrt connect to the internet.. after hours and hours of phone calls to iprimus, and numerous winsock resets, ethernet cable testing, and modem resetting, they tell me that the problem is within my laptop...
So i rang toshiba.. and they got me to go into device managers, and then network adapters, and disable, actually uninstall the wireless drivers, then reinstall.. and it worked.. finally... (forgot to add with all the iprimus confusion someone had reset my passowrd and i had to configure that to the laptop..
so anyway, after all these calls, i did a complete restore of the laptop, and wiped everything and reinstalled it all, and therefore reinstalled the modem. this time in modem setup it was telling me the wireless network adapter was unplugged, and would only let me set it up via ethernet..
now earlier today i did have the internet.. but it dropped out randomly.. webpages will go slow, sometimes it will reconnect, other times it wont. now i thougbht i might try and uninstall and reinstall the modem again,s ame error, and this time, cant get on wirelessly at all.
ive googled to see if others ahve had this problem.. and seeing what other people wrote, i went into my battery settings, and checked the WLAN didnt go into sleep mode etc, and ive also checked everythings enabled. ive no idea what to do,, neither iprimus or Toshiba will give me any anwers, both companies are just blaming each other lol
    so i
it does appear to be my laptop, as all lights are on modem.. and iprimus keep telling me its not registering with them ( the disconnections) so it must be my wireless. though everytime my laptop dropped out of internet, so would my bfs iphone we were testing, and so did my other laptop which is partially stuffed but could normally still connect to the net.. so thats telling me its a modem problem.. ive no idea what to do.. and cant keep this via ethernet on the bench in this new hosue ive moved into,as with 2 kids under 3, thats just asking for trouble..
    anyone have any suggestion??
    thanks in advance

wel after many more phone calls to iprimus, i finally found a helpful indian, who ran me through the modem setup AGAIN like everyone else has, this time in its security settings, he got me to change the wireless signal channel from 2 to 9, said that would improve the signal, every other person when explaining the issues i was having, always told me to set it on 2.. so this has improved it dramatically in the day, but at night, particulary around 830pm, it drops out over and over and over...
would this just be a faulty modem, and perhaps buying oen from a harvery norman etc would be better?? or could it just be iprimus as a whole with there wireless coverage? im not in an iprimus area, theyve borrowed the lines of telstra or something.. so im on a crappier plan in this new house, and dont have adsl2 just 1500 speed. would this have anythign to do with the poor reception, or perhaps is there something in my house interfearing, or in my neighbors house? there is a satelite here, but no actual foxtel connected, looks as though it has been before. there is also an alarm here, not in use though.. ive not even seen if it turns on..

  • Logging DSL downtime using SNMP.. HELP!!!!

Our office has been having a ton of short lived DSL outages which is causing havoc for our developers. The general manager has asked me to write a tool to monitor our internet connection and log whenever the DSL goes down and how long the outage lasts. The outages vary from 5 sec to 2 min. Just long enough to cancel an FTP or bomb a remote desktop session.
At first I thought I'd simply write a module that would ping a standard website (google) every second or two and log the result. But it seems there should be a more accurate way. I've been looking into SNMP and using an api for that. It seems that it may be the right approach if I could just figure out how to decifer the MIB. It's not looking good.
So I am hoping I might can get some help.
What is the most accurate way for a java module to determine if there is a healthy connection to the internet at the DSL Router? (From a machine on the inside of the network.) I'd like to be able to hit it a maximum of every 5 seconds and get a quick response without tying up network resources with something like a ping.
I have Googled this until I am totally out of ideas just to figure out what to search for. I get a lot of info on SNMP and Java APIs but none of the documentation is straight forward enough that I could say that I can figure out exactly what to run and what results to expect. And MIB documentation is scary!!!!
So far I have been able to write a test module that will access the router and grab the entire MIB table and then dump it. But the data is just too abstract to identify anything from it.
    HELP!!!

That is the reason for the monitor. Our ISP only
claims to log outages of 60 seconds or more. So
they only acknowledge one or two outages per day.
However we are having a minimum of 15 to 20 outages
of 30 seconds or less every day. Which are causing
us lots of problems. We need to try to monitor the
actual outages so we can address the issue with our
    ISP.
I would encourage you to work directly with your iSP to resolve the situation. Or get a new ISP. Or hire a network specialist to work on your problem along with your ISP. Or a combination of all this.
    Here's why
    1) I don't know about logging "outages" but I would be shocked if they don't have log of connections or reconnections. All ISPs I have worked with have such a log. What you descibe as "outages" they may mean by some sort of line fault where the line noise goes over a certain threshold.
    2) line noise is not usually the problem in my experience when people have intermittent connection problems. Most commonly there is a hardware problem on your end, faulty modem or fault gateway router. As in a modem that starts spewing garbage down the line or a router that goes awry (several ways this can happen).
    3) Regardless the monitoring program is unneccessary because the router should have a way of logging re-connections.
Anyway. I don't doubt you are having a problem, sometimes they happen, I just believe that you would be better served trying to solve it another way. Again a networking specialist would be able to help you out far quicker and more effectively.

  • Infinity fault

I had infinity installed two weeks ago and last Friday at 10.30 it simply stopped working. After reporting the fault at 09:00 on Saturday morning, I am still waiting for the issue to be resolved.
The openreach modem dsl light is continual blinking green which, I believe, indicates that there is an issue at ppp stage.
On Saturday, I was promised that an engineer would attend this morning between 8-1pm. No-one showed up. This is despite my checking this morning at 10am to see all is running to plan and being assured that it was. My partner received a text confirming the appointment, clearly stating that someone would visit.
On speaking to customer service we were told that there never was an engineer due to come to the property! Without being cynical I don't believe anyone has done anything to help me. The online fault tracker says that this was being repaired before 1pm today!
At this point, we were told that someone will attend on Wednesday morning. From looking online I believe that this is no more than a faulty modem!
Please, please can a moderator help me or someone try and sort this out! My partner lost work today and I will again on Wednesday.
I have worked in customer service myself and helped get a company into the top 10 for UK service. BT, it shouldn't and needn't be like this!

I feel for you seanyj. Best bet would be to wait until Wednesday and if nothing has happened then PM the mods on this forum using this online form:

I hope all turns out well.

  • Can't get Internet through my own Network Connecti...

Hi, I have a HH3, which I am constantly having to switch off and on again for devices to connect to the Internet. It's been happening for months, and last week BT sent me a new hub, but it hasn't fixed the problem. It seems that our devices connect to the router, but the router doesn't connect to the Internet.
If I select the BT Wifi connection and log in via the Openzone homepage, I get Internet access. But this is not practical for all devices. My children can't play on their tablets and viewing / downloading TV on demand is pretty much impossible. And these were the main reasons for upgrading to Infinity.
I've had several conversations with call centre support staff, but the problem persists.
Can anybody tell me whether this is a settings issue that I can fix? My family is going nuts!

EDIT: As you initially posted on the Infinity board I have assumed you have infinity. If you only have ADSL this will not apply to you.
Make a direct connection from your PC/Laptop to the Openreach modem which will eliminate the homehub. Follow this guide to do that. Use your computer as normal to see if it disconnects. If it does disconnect you will know it is either a faulty modem or a line/exchange fault.
Step 1: Remove the homehub from the modem
Step2: Connect your pc/laptop into the modem using LAN1 port
Step3: Open network and sharing centre on windows and click set up a new connection or network
Step4: Connect to the internet then click make a new connection Broadband PPPoE
Step5: Username [email protected] and the password as BT
Step6: connect, If it doesn't,keep pressing try again until it does.

  • Getting frustrated can anyone help?

TLDR : I think I need a profile reset, but cant seem to get this across to call centers.
    Full story
A while back my infinity modem developed a fault, it would run for a while, then begin to lose the line - only for 2 or 3 seconds, but then reconnect. This fault got worse until one night it was doing this every 3 mins. I am an avid online gamer, so as you can imagine I got a little annoyed!
I emailed customer services about the fault clearly explaining that the modem was faulty and I needed a new one.
They sent an email back detailing the best way to reset my router.....
I emailed back and explained that this wouldn't help as it was the modem that was at fault, and that my router was fine!
They then called me, and I went thru the rigmarole of explaining again what the problem was - a faulty modem.
To give this nice Indian guy his due, he seemed to understand, and told me a new set of equipment would be mailed out to me.
2 days later I received my shiny new router in the post..... great thanks....Still no modem....
in the meantime I had googled that the error was because the modem over heats, and as my setup is next to the window I fixed it by hanging the modem outside while I was playing
this worked ok, and I was about to calm down enough to ring bt again when I got the letter about all modems being replaced.
I now have my new modem, but due to the earlier fault, my line had gone from a healthy 37.5 down / 8.1 up to 12 down / 0.5 up.
I logged another fault and had a reply today to say its fixed - I now have around 32 down, but still only 0.5 up.
I would ideally like to return to my original speeds - as far as I can make out all that has changed is my modem.
Am I being unreasonable to ask this after the 2/3 months that I have been going back and forth with this?
    Thanks for reading,
    Jay.

Hi guys, thanks for the responces, good to know there is help out there
    test results:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 29 Mbps For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 12 Mbps-33.88 Mbps . Additional Information: IP Profile for your line is - 33.88 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 773Kbps Additional Information: Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10 Mbps
as you can see dl is ok, altho it would be nice to see it returned to 40, but there is definately something wrong with upload?
Should I continue down the route of emailing the forum team?
