That pretty much sizes it up. So even on an external monitor you have low res and color depth? That is almost for sure a bad video card chip which is the same as saying a bad motherboard.

  • Faulty PCI video card on MDD 1.25 Dual

A friend gave me a MDD Dual 1.25 Gig Mac recently. The tower had been in storage for some time, and she didn't know if there were any issues with it. When I got it home, I tried to on an old VGA monitor and got a blank screen. I then tried it on a DVI connection with a new LCD monitor, and it worked for a couple of sessions, then went blank again. Took it to the Genius Bar at my local Apple store, and the tech reseated the Radeon 9200 PCI card. The card was suddenly working again, but as soon as I got it home, it stopped working. Has anyone else had this issue? Is it the card, or the PCI slot, or something else? If I need to buy a new card, what would you suggest? I'm assuming that I should at least get an AGP card. I'm not a big gamer, but I don't want to buy a card that will be obsolete tomorrow.

Hi! The first thing I would ask is if the battery has been replaced? If it was in storage it's likely dead and will cause all sorts of weird things. Tom

  • If you replace a video card... do you have to replace the motherboard too?

so my pre-unibody mbp has a faulty video card. i'm told it needs to be replaced. is it true that having the video card replaced involves replacing the motherboard too?

If I may chime in, if you are a heavy photoshop user-the 13" is already not an option.  15" or 17" depending on your budget. You need the i7 processor and upgrading to 8gb ram wouldnt hurt either.  But dont get the ram from Apple..way overpriced.  See here: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S08S/. 8gb for $60-cant go wrong with that! And a lifetime guarantee.

Does a PCI Express NVDIA Video Card (8500GT 512MB/128Bit/DDR2) compatible on a MSI KM4M Series Motherboard (System Model: KM400-8235)?
Is it possible to setup the PCI Express NVDIA Video Card on the MSI Motherboard PCI Bus Slot?
    Thanks for any response.

Maybe this is a dumb question..
There's no way a PCI-e card will work on that board. AGP yes, PCI yes, PCI-e no.

  • Motherboard issue? With video card.

    Mainboard:  760GMA-P34(FX) (MS-7641)
    PCB Version:  5.0
BIOS Version: VP.0 (aka Version: V25.0)
    BIOS Date:  5/28/2013
Everything works fine using onboard video. Windows 7 64 bit.
Plug in my Nvidia GT 620 and immediately CPU fan maxes out with no increase in temperature, system still stable using standard VGA driver provided by windows. After ANY NVIDIA driver is installed, windows blue screens upon boot. We can't see the error because the blue screen is too quick, and it immediately tries to reboot and restore. Event logs show nothing.
I'm at a loss here. MSI motherboard tech support isn't open on the weekends, hopefully you guys can shed some light. Is this common? Do I need a new board? I've never come across anything like this before. The rest of the machine is 100% stable, the only issue(s) that arise is when the video card and the drivers are installed. The video card works fine in another machine, I've replaced the power supply with a much heftier one with more juice, and the same thing happens.
    Thanks!

  • Can a pcie express X 3.0 video card be used on a pcie express x 16 2.0 motherboard?

I am upgrading my PSU and GPU and want to know if a pcie 3.0 video card will work on my pcie 2.0 motherboard.
     the motherboard is a MS-7613 IONA-GL8E  (MSI)

The pcie 3.0 specification is backwardly compatible to pcie 2.0. The problem you may run into is that of compatibility with the vBIOS of the video card. Major video card makers have forums that are usually quite helpful with that kind of knowlege.
Check at the candidate PCIe x16 manufacturer's support forum  or website to see if they offer a vBIOS file to make it legacy PC compatible. You need one with a hybrid vBIOS, because your PC is not UEFI vBIOS compatible.
It is always best if you identify an HP product by its product name or product number rather than the subsystems that it contains. That lets us find information on the BIOS, which is what I needed.
Try doing a Google search with your PC's product name and upgrading video card as the keywords to sift through the information freely available on the internet.

  • CPU & Video card Upgrade - Motherboard manual, GPIO switch settings, BIOS update or ?

According to the HP TouchSmart 600-1120 Desktop PC Product Specifications page the motherboard supports the following CPUs:
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
    Intel Core i7 820QM Quad Core (C)
    Intel Core i7 720QM Quad Core (C)
    Intel Core i7 620M Dual Core (A)
    Intel Core i5 5x0M Dual Core (A)
    Intel Core i5 430M Dual Core (A)
I upgraded mine with the Intel Core i7 720QM Quad Core.  The two Quad Cord i7 processors do not have a GPU Video chip integrated on the CPU fab like the listed Dual Core processors,  and therefore neccesate the need for an external video card.
According to the HP TouchSmart 600-1120 Desktop PC Product Specifications page the motherboard supports One Mobile PCI Express Module (MXM) socket MXM version: 3.0, type A.
HP offered the NVIDIA GeForce GT 230 1GB DDR3 MXM Video Card , part # 513184-001 as an upgrade option on HP Touchsmart 600's, one would assume you could simply purchase this video card, and with either of these "supported" CPUs Intel Core i7 820QM Quad Core or Intel Core i7 720QM Quad Core and you would be in business, but NOOOO, it does not work!
I tried it on mine, using the Intel Core i7 720QM Quad Core and HP NVIDIA GeForce GT 230 1GB DDR3 MXM Video Card.  The display cycles through various colors, but does not actually provide a usable display.  I can tell the system does boot into Windows 7 (you can hear it) , but you cannot see anything.
There's a bank of DIP switches on the motherboard labled GPIO, which I'd assume is Graphics Processor Input Output, and perhaps there's a switch combo to switch from the Intel CPU/GPU to the MXM slot GPU??? i
I'm unable to find anywhere a manual on the Pentragram motherboard, this may tell how to set said GPIO dip switch if that's what needs to happen?
HP HELP!!!  Your site says the HP Touchsmart is upgradable to the above Intel Quad Core i7 and MXM Video card, BUT HOW?????

    Hi,
I suspect the NVIDIA GTX 760 that you are using is expecting a different BIOS level in the motherboard.  Most of the NVIDIA 760s that have experienced compatibility issues pretty much have been with HP motherboards that don't have version 8 or 80 BIOS level.  The HPE h8-1075UK only has a version 7 BIOS level.
MSI has two "N" model NVIDIA GTX  750 and 750 TI graphic cards that have a switch to allow compatibility with legacy and UEFI BIOS PCs.

  • Can random hangs be caused by a faulty video card?

    Hi all,
I have an early 2008 MacPro, running X.7.5, and it has a video card that has been acting up. For years, it has been putting up random patterns of garbage which I generally ignore. The other day I came back to the machine to find the screen black and littered with various inconsistencies. Had to reboot. Then, as I was working normally the computer hung while I was in Finder and moved the cursor over the dock.
I guess I should do something. Would the hardware test tell me anything on this?
Anyone remember how to start up into the hardware test?
Thanks, and so long for now, Tom

    HI Grant Bennet-Alder,
I appreciate all the input. I have read the pointers you recommended about the choices and done the research, but, I really need a lower power, lower performance card(less fan, 2D graphics not video), and so I am looking at the Nvidia GeForce GT 120 as the budget alternative. It first shipped with the MacPro4,1, but I want to install in the MacPro3,1 and use X.7.5 or later and I want to be sure it works without any draw backs. Can you tell anything in this regard.
Thanks, and so long for now, TOM

You're looking at the 'AGP Aperture Size' setting, which has nothing to do with the amount of memory on your video card.
Have a look at this article: What is AGP Aperture size? from techpowerup.com
    @Henry,
848P doesn't have any onboard VGA.

  • X58 PRO won't boot (memory or video card issue???)

    Hi all,
this is my first message here.
I have recently bought a X58 PRO motherboard to which I have connected the following devices: one HD, one DVD, the CPU (i7 950), one Video Card (GeForce 6600 pci-express) and three DDR3 modules from Corsair (named CMT6GX3M3A2000C8). According to Corsair website the modules CMT6GX3M3A2000C8 run on thie X58 PRO.
I have turned on the system, but the screen remains black and the motherboard issues an intermittent buzz sound.
    Besides:
The led close to the pci-express (where the video card is connected) is on.
The 5 CPU leds are all turned on.
The led close to the memory socket is off.
As far as I know, usually the intermittent buzz means that the motherboard doesn't recognize either the RAM or the video card, but I don't know if the buzz is different case by case (can be buzz be different according to the issue?) and in the manual I didn't find a troubleshotting chapter.
Is there a way which allow me to better identify where the issue would be (in memory or in Video Card... or something else)?
I have not tested neither the memory nor the video card on another system, thus I don't know if one of them is faulty.
    Can anyone please help me?
    many thanks in advance!
    Lorenzo

    Do a CMOS clear>>Clear CMOS Guide<<
Only insert one mem module. Check all your power connections to the board/s again that they are secure. You may want to reseat your CPU and check carefully that all the contact pads on the CPU do have imprints.
Ok, I'll try it this evening!
In the meanwhile, I thank you.

  • Mac Pro video card flaky?

I have a Mac Pro 5.1, the mid-2010 model. Recently the display has been acting flaky, and now it doesn't seem to work at all.
The problems started intermittenly for some time ago. I would switch the computer on and the monitor (a Samsung) would not receive a signal. I would get the picture by turning the monitor off and on again. I thought that maybe there was something wrong with the monitor, but since it always received the video signal after flicking it off and on again, I didn't think too much about it.
Two weeks ago the monitor suddenly lost the signal while the computer was on. The monitor and computer were still both powered, and the video cable was fine. But the flicking off and on didn't work this time. I had to turn off and on the Mac Pro itself to get the video back.
Yesterday it happened again twice and this morning again. The signal from the card disappears after the computer is on for 10-15 minutes or so. When I was at the computer as it happened, I thought that the computer became more silent when the video vanished. Switching the computer off and on, does not help. I might get a signal, but for 30 sec or so, then it is gone again.
I do not think the problem is the monitor, although I have not tried attaching another computer to it. I have the Mac Pro also hooked to my AV-receiver and LCD projector. When the Samsung loses the video signal, so does the LCD projector. My guess is that the video card is at fault here.
The card is an ATI RAdeon HD 5870. Any advice how to make sure that the video card is the culprit, and not for example the motherboard? If it turns out the card is faulty, what would be a recommended replacement for it?
Edit (addition): There is nothing wrong with the picture before it disappears. No distortions or anything. The video signal is simply gone.

Have you tried blowing the dust out?
Also the suggestion about running machine with side off and seeing if fan is running.
Video cards are cooled by an array of small metal fins connected to the GPU chip. The fan blows air through these fins. Over time, the fins build up a layer of dust. This is especially true if you have animals, keep your Mac on the floor, live in a dusty area or if you smoke.
The symptoms you describe are similar to an overheating card. They have thermal overload protection which simply shuts the card off when it reaches a temp above 100 C or so. If you are lucky, you just need to blow some compressed air BACKWARDs through the fan to knock the dust off the front face of the fins. I have seen these fins completely covered with dust, at which point the fan can only do so much to cool the card.

  • My computer isnt detecting my video card

    specs:
    athlon 1800+
MSI nvidia gefore TI 4200 128mb
    768 DDR ram
western digital 80 gig hard drive
    MSI KT6 Delta-SR motherboard
i've been getting a lot of errors at random times with my nforce2 audio drive so i thought i'd uninstall my drivers and install newer nvidia utility drivers. everything was going fine with the uninstallation and after my computer rebooted after the uninstallation process i downloaded the newer drivers from the nvidia website and i was able to install my audio and my ethernet but for some reason my video card kept giving a error saying that the graphics card that i was trying to install cannot be detected so it'll stop with the installation. so i thought maybe the newest drive was faulty with my video card since its a little old. so i got the older drivers and i installed them and i didnt get any errors and everything seemed like it was installed. after the rebooted i checked my display settings and i couldnt change my resolution. i checked the adaptor tab in the advanced settings and its blank and under properties it just says "VgaSave" i've tried almost everything from my current computer knowledge with no luck. i've tried going in to add hardware and pointing to my video driver folder, etc. but nothing works. any solution?
and sorry if my story is long and doesnt make sense. its 5:30am here and i've been up trying to fix this for hours. thanks in ad

  • New Member / Video Card Choice Question

New CS4 Production Premium User Here.
I am building a computer system specifically for Video Editing and production for use with Premier CS4 & Sony Vegas.. Have been doing my usual amount of Over Research here and other places but have a series of issues I am having a little trouble coming to grips with.
I have been into computer editing game for a long time but strictly in the Audio Recording /Mixing area /..
Video is a new interest which has me hooked / Im also a Gear Junkie so I have to watch it. 
I will probably be back with a couple more topics but to keep this thread simple /
My first post question is the topic of Video cards: Adobes Hardware compatibility list seems a little out dated. ?
The system does not have to be an ultimate gaming rig as I am not into that / just SD & HD Video editing & 3d effects.. I need a card which will do what is needed / works well with Premier CS4 / Is not too loud fan wise / can run 24/5 and not overheat.
    I also will need the ability to monitor on a HD TV with a good sound monitoring system / Midas / Bryston / Dynaudio etc;
I was considering either of the following / from lowest price to highest.
    ASUS GeForce 9600GT Silent 650MHZ 512MB 1.8GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out
    ASUS GeForce 9800GT Matrix 612MHZ 512MB 1.8GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out
    ASUS GeForce 9800GTX+ Dk 740MHZ 512MB 2.3GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out
    Questions:
    Is a 512mb card sufficient?
Will all of the above do what is needed for my purpose?
What about noise of heat issues.
My system could be running close to 24/5 at times.
Have not made a final decision on all components but will probably basically start of like this.
    Vista 64 Bit/OS
    Core I7 940
Asus Rampage 2 Extreme or a plain P6T
Antec 1200 Case / For now I will leave out the hard drives and other things on my list.
My builder suggests to stick with ASUS Video Cards because he has the fastest warranty replacement service on his end for ASUS products / plus I am a total ASUS Motherboard guy with years satisfied experiences.. (in Audio setups).
Any feedback or comments on the above will be appreciated.
    Thanks / Orion

    Thanks Members for the Feedback:
I am trying to stick just to the Video Card Issues so the topic does not get all over the map / Raid issues have already been researched & I might have a question about that later in another thread.
Witha the video card issue I am just trying to see if I can get a reply which the majority of users agree upon / not an easy task & that is were my confused state of topic started.
    b Keith
It seems what you have said about QUADRO cards is the most agreed upon overall from my last three months of research at various locations / The cost is extreme for these cards & I was just trying to determime if I realy needed to go that far : >$2,000.00 and up.
    just for the Graphics card..
Perhaps I should start of with one of the cards I first mentioned which are dirt cheep compared to the Quadro series and replace it when I have arrived at the point where my shills are beyond my hardware limitations.
    b Charles & Jim.
Thanks for the reference to the . >ASUS GeForce 9800GTX+ Dk 740MHZ 512MB 2.3GHZ DDR3< I was thinking this might be the best to start with / except for the reported could be problems of / Noise / card size and Heat issues if running 24/5?
Other issues you have stated also seem to be agreed upon from mny sources as well / which is why I am considering perhaps not going Raid "o" from the start / perhaps Raid 5.. / or No Raid until I see If realy need it for my own personal use level.
b conclusion to this point in the game:
Looks like If I do a top notch system following all the higher end recomendations it will cost me over $10,000.00 (if I include a capture card / raid card (Areca 1220 or 1240(don't want to get into that topic just yet)& all the extras... This is about double the investment I had planned as this is basically a serious hobby not a business venture. Plus we have not included another $6,000.00 for a half decent peosumer HD camera with a few extras. I was trying to keep the entire setup to 8 to 10 grand total.. Not including the software / so this looks like wishfull thinking at best / Ho Ho.
b remember / unfortunately my pricing reflects Canadian $$ which includes a 25% hike in pricing because our government wants the loonie (Good Name) low valued so businesses can export our products at built in 25% Sale Pricing.
Perhaps,we wont get into that topic/please, but I just couldn't resist / when I start thinking about government issues (anywhere in this world) I tend to go off the deep end as part of why I am going into this video thing is to document the destruction of our environment & the entire democratic process, which is a total farce in my neck of the woods. Nuff Said..
Again Thanks for the input and I will keep watching and perhaps cover another topic later / my goal is to place an order for a build within the next 10 days of so.
