Faulty Recovery CD and no more allowed !

Hi All, x130e, AMD and loved it up to this point. Had a very sticky virus problem and decided to stop messing with it's removal and reinstall the win7pro software. Fortunately I had made the set of recovery CDs the first week I had this thing. Plugged in the USB CD drive, hit the F12 to select the boot device and the boot CD just loops at the "Select Boot device." I can see the recovery CD in the list and I drop down and select it, but it goes off for about 15-seconds then comes back to the F12 boot selection menu again. OK, so I booted to win7 and thought I would burn another recovery boot CD and see if that gets me started instead of making a whole new set. ****bleep** me** if I get a message "Only one set of recovery CDs allowed." DUH. What's with that. I now can't get rid of the virus and I also can't boot the recovery CD. Obviously the hidden recovery Partition has a Flag set saying I have made one set so no more. This is Lenovo insanity. What does it matter if I make more than one set? The recovery CDs will only work for THIS laptop. Now I am screwed unless I can turn that "Flag" around and make a new boot recovery CD.

As I understand it this restriction was imposed on Lenovo by Microsoft. (I agree that it doesn't seem to make sense. What's to prevent someone from copying the CDs after they've burned the first set using the utility?)
In the past when I had a similar issue with recovery CDs I've been able to get Lenovo to send me a set at no charge. But that was a couple of years ago and the system was still in warranty so I don't know if you'll have similar luck.

My boyfriends mother bought a old iphone via internet and she needs help restoring it.  As good as I am with Apple products, I have no clue what to do..  I dont want to tell her she got ripped off and I want to restore the phone for her but its not restoring.  When I go to restore it, it takes 10 minutes and then it tells me there was an unknown error.

Reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears
Then do some house cleaning in iCloud (or purchase more storage)
Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage > Select a device if more that one > Show All Apps and turn off some apps that you don't need or care to be backed up.
Also, connect to iTunes and empty your Camera Roll onto your computer. Photos & videos tend to eat up a lot of space.

  • Faulty hard drives and recovery sets

Regarding having a faulty hard drive (no recovery partition), if you and a friend have the same computer model you could buy a new hard drive (maybe 120GB) and clone the good one from one computer to use in the one that had a bad hard drive then make a recovery set from the clone as well as the original, I did this and it's worked.
I have two HP HDX9000 laptops of which one is slightly cosmetically damaged and its original hard drive died so Windows Vista was put on an unpartitioned 500GB hard drive which will go with the unit. I took the OS drive from the 'new' laptop and cloned it so the old one would once again have a recovery partition and created recovery discs from both.

  • IPod Classic stores about 6000 songs and when I try and add more from library it detects van iPod in recovery mode and needs to be restored every time.

How to fix an iPod that only takes 6000 songs and then goes into recovery mode and consistently asks for restore?

Can you play the song in iTunes?
If you can't the song file is probably corrupt and needs to be replaced.

thanks for the comprehensive info. i experienced this for the first time today. i bought my macbook the day they were released. the shutdown happenned for me after leaving my computer on overnight with no programs running. about two minutes into web browsing it shutdown. it then shutdown in the middle of restarts. i disattached power cord, external hard drive, dvd burner & ethernet & it powered up and has been working for about 20 minutes since.
this computer has really been a lemon. first my superdrive scratches the **** (just previewed this, i can't believe they sensor the h_ word?) out of discs, then the trackpad button becomes very hard to push. i've been working around those issues using an external dvd burner and mouse, but not sure how to work around sudden shutdowns. i haven't been able to send it in for repairs yet since i bought it cause i needed it's dvd authoring capabilities for a class i was taking, plus i wanted to make sure nothing else went wrong (self fulfilling prophecy?). i was planning on taking it on vacation with me, but guess i better pack my old ibook too (which other than a cd burner which sucked from the start, has been very reliable). i'll send in my macbook when i get back.
anyway, thanks for the info & advice! i'll back up my crucial data now.

Aperture 3 keeps crashing on me, consistently. More frequently after using Burn tool or skin smoothing - and even more often when I feather. What can I do? I already upgraded my RAM. I'm at a loss!

    4) When my computer crashes, once it starts again, it says "repairing" ... but I am not familiar with reparing permissions -- can you explain how I might do that?
If you are running OS X Lion, then you can restart your computer and then press and hold the 'Option' key immediately after you hear the start up 'gong' (usually heard when grey screen shows as it restarts).
You should see at least two Disks to choose from. Choose 'Recovery Disk' and wait for it to load, then choose 'Disk Utility' option in the Utilities dialog.
Once Disk Utility loads, do the following:
1 - In the left hand pane, choose your system partition (usually called either 'Macintosh HD' or 'Macintosh SSD'). Note - don't choose the actual hard drive listed above the partition when using Disk Utility in OS X Lion as this doesn't offer options for repairing due to it including the Recovery Disk you have loaded in memory.
2 - Click the 'First Aid' tab
3 - Click the 'Repair Disk Permissions' button in lower portion of main pane and allow to complete. Ideally, you will get a final message in main pane saying Disk Permissions are repaired.
4 - At lower right of same pane, click the 'Repair Disk' button and allow to complete. Ideally, you will get a final message indicating that Disk Repair is completed and all appears to be good.
5 - Quit Disk Utility > Close Utilities dialog window > Click 'Restart' button (confirm as needed).
You should boot straight into the system partition when complete.
Note - any red text in the main pane text while running the repairs will be issues and you will need to follow the advice given or post back.
If you are running Snow Leopard; then (as David mentions) boot from your first OS X reinstall disc and run the Disk Utility the same way; except you select the actual hard drive listed at top of left pane (not the partition below it). This is because Snow Leopard does not use a 'Recovery Disk' partition and repairs can be run on the HD or SSD itself.
    Hope that helps.

  • Ipod stuck in recovery mode and won't restore. says it can't connect to the network.

My son tried to jailbreak his ipod touch like an idiot and of course it did not work. Now his ipod is stuck in recovery mode and I can't get it to restore. I get a message that says:the ipod software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later. I have internet access and everything is working but itunes can't connect to it. Why? I have been having issues with itunes for a couple weeks now. I can't connect to the store and redeem itunes cards either.

Make sure the setting for your security software allow iTunes to contact Apple servers:
iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues
As for the iPod, since he tried to modify the software, the only thing that could help would be DFU mode , we can't help much more, problems with jailbroken devices can't be discussed in theses forums, due to the Terms of Use.
Your son has to ask those people for help, which encouraged him to jailbreak his device.

  • Why do we, and the law, allow HD manufacturers to screw us?

First of all, before anyone calls me a n00b, I DO understand why a 16GB (for example) drive is actually less, because manufacturers use decimal values when advertising, where as a gigabyte is actually measured in powers of two, giving 1024 megs.
My question is: If the *actual* measurement is agreed to be a power of two, as actually used and understood by operating systems and file systems, then why do we (and consumer laws) allow them to use phoney measurements to advertise their products?
Is this not akin to, for instance, advertising a flask as holding a litre of water, but we decide to interpret a litre as 700ml, which it simply isn't?
Why is this allowed? Why have the courts continued to allow it when it seems to me a very clear case of companies simply screwing their customers by using false mathematics?
Surely a gigabyte should be defined as a gigabyte one way or another and that definition should have to be used by everyone both in advertising AND in practise? See my litre comparison above - that would never be allowed, so why is this?

No one is defending the practice, per se. They're just telling you that 1) it's how it is and 2) where you can to go try and get things changed. This is no longer a discussion that is appropriate for these forums which are for technical support for Apple products, not for arguments about industry policies.
There's nothing more anyone can say. You've been given the explanation as to the apparent discrepancy and told how to proceed if you want to try and change the industry.
    Regards.
BTW, your analogy is faulty. A more apt analogy would be if your container was rated by one source in imperial gallons and by another in US gallons.
