Faulty Synaptics Touchpad Driver on Split x2 13-m121sa Causing Freezing and Mouse Unresponsiveness

Edit: I found a solution, scroll further down. I have been having problems with my new Split x2 similar to those already explained in the forums by other users. The symptoms are as follows:
1. Unusual hanging or freezing of the mouse pointer on the screen and temperamental use of gestures (two finger scrolling, zooming, etc.)
2. Slowing down of computer generally; acting sluggish and freezing during only light use and/or after screen being closed.
The symptoms seems to change depending on the length of time the computer has been switched on, and are affected by disconnecting/reconnecting the screen from the dock.
Being quite good with these things I decided to investigate and have uncovered the following:
The root cause of both of these problems is the Synaptics Touchpad driver. While the newest version (17.0.10.9) available from the HP website seems to solve any unusual freezing of the pointer it has a significant memory leak. In other words, as you move the pointer around the touchpad uses up the computer's memory. This is normal, but the problem is that the driver for the touchpad does not give the memory back; it cannot be reallocated. This means after a couple of hours of using the computer (or having the screen closed) the memory reaches saturation point and the computer grinds to a halt. If you are having the same problem have a look for yourself: Open task manager and look at the performance tab. Under the Memory heading you will see a value for 'Non-paged pool'. With the computer idle this number shouldn't increase, but move the mouse around and you will see it gradually go up without returning. I have confirmed this to be the Synaptics driver by using the Windows tool poolmon.exe - the culprits are Irp and SynT. Regarding solutions, I have tried many - but there is no absolute fix.
You can uninstall the Synaptics Touchpad driver and the problem will go away - no more freezing or high memory usage. But without the driver the computer reverts to using the standard Windows driver - therefore there is no multitouch gestures like scrolling or zooming.
I have tried installing the generic Synaptics driver available from their website, and the computer won't allow it. Regardless of this, I forced the driver install but the generic driver does not work with this Touchpad anyway (Error code 10). I have tried the latest version (17.0.19) and an older one (16.2.21) with no success. Even earlier versions (e.g. 15.x.x) refuse to run on the grounds of incompatibility. HP Support suggest a system 'refresh' back to factory setting, but apart from the huge inconvenience of time and losing files - I know this won't work either. Apparently a clean install has worked for one user - but for this you need a Windows install disc or USB which I do not have - and I'm sceptical that it would work anyway.
So now I'm using the standard Windows touchpad driver without being able to scroll, zoom or use the swipe-in gestures of Windows 8.1.
If a HP representative is reading this, I would strongly suggest that this problem be escalated. A simple update from Synaptics could solve this problem which is causing people's computers to freeze up and wasting your support staff's time.
TL;DR: HP's Touchpad driver is faulty and causes a memory leak. Synaptics own generic drivers do not work. And Windows standard drivers are unsatisfactory.

SOLVED!
Through my own research I have found a solution. While the official newest driver listed under this model is 17.0.10.9 there is in fact a newer version which does not have this problem: version 17.0.10.16!
I am still disappointed that HP didn't suggest this solution themselves, considering this driver was published back in November 2013! HP if you're reading this: please allocate this driver to this model in your support pages. Anyway, the solution is as follows:
1. Open the Device Manager (Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager)2. Under 'Mice and other pointing devices' open 'Synaptics HID TouchPad'3. In the 'Driver' tab click on 'Uninstall'4. The pointer will disappear - reboot the computer5. Download the new driver from here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&softwareitem=ob-127354-1(if this link goes down try searching online for 'synaptics driver 17.0.10.16')6. Open and install the driver I hope this helps. HP, please send my consulation fee via PayPal(!)

  • Satellite L955-10K - Synaptics Touchpad Driver does not work properly

    Hello, ASRR here.
I've been having a problem with my Synaptics touchpad driver since yesterday. I am very used to using the "gestures" to work with my touchpad and the gestures haven't worked properly (in fact at all) for a while. The two-finger scrolling, the three-finger touch and others (actually all of the gestures) do not work anymore.
The cursor moves, and works fine but the gestures don't.
When I go to the Mouse option in the Control Panel, a window pops up stating that the PC is "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver." and asks me whether I want to uninstall it.
I have tried uninstalling it, then going on the support page for Toshiba and downloading a driver that was suitable for my model, operating system, etc.
When I set up the driver I downloaded and restart the PC, the same window pops up when I try and go to the Mouse options in the Control Panel and the gestures do not work.
One interesting thing I noticed however, is the fact that when I roll back the driver (in the Hardware properties- then settings) the gestures work FINE. However, as it always asks you to restart the computer in order for the Rolling back of the driver to take place, when I do restart it, it sets the Microsoft touchpad driver from 2006; which does not include the gestures I need.
I have tried multiple times to fix it but I can't. I went to the UEFI firmware set up and tried resetting it to default but with no success.
I really do not know what to do. Could somebody PLEASE help?
My Toshiba Model is a Satellite L-955-10K with a 64bit processor and originally installed Windows 8 operating system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

To me it looks like the Synaptics touchpad driver could not be installed properly and after the new restart the touchpad driver isnt indicated by the Windows 8 system.
By the way: are you still using the Win 8? Didnt you upgrade the system to Win 8.1? Should do this since many different bugs have been solved in new Win 8.1 version.
Back to the Synaptics touchpad driver.
Usually the drivers should be downloaded from the Toshiba driver page but in some cases you could also use the drivers directly from manufacturer pages. In this case the touchpad driver has been released by Synaptics and it would be interesting to know how the touchpad driver from Synaptics driver page would act on your notebook

  • Screen Flickering Everytime After Updating Synaptics Touchpad Driver And Touchpad Not Working

I have a HP ENVY 4 1023tu Notebook with Windows 8 Pro. I always keep my pc updated. But whenever i try updated the synaptics touchpad driver through availabe updates by hp support assistant, the screen starts to flicker(Start screen and settings bar at the right) and touchpad doesn't work . The external works fine. Then I have to roll back the driver . then it comes to normal. If the driver update is meant to be updated then why its not supporting...

I had the same problem as you with my Hp Probook 450 and I think I found a cause of the problem. I installed Windows 8.1 on it, and when I tried to install touchpad driver, after system restart my screen was blank. My problem is in AMD Radeon graphics card integrated in laptop. When I installed touchpad driver, the graphics driver somehow updated too. The problem is, that AMD only have beta driver for Windows 8.1, while the old one isn't good. So I had to start computer in safe mode and disabled graphics card in Windows device manager. Then I downloaded that beta driver and installed it (still with some small problems) So, the beta driver also isn't perfect, but it will help until they release final version. So I hope that helps you, or anyone, that might have similar problems.

  • Synaptics touchpad driver fails to install.

    Hi,
I have a HP Pavillion Dv7 t6100 series.  I'm fairly proficient on computers (as I am an electrical and computer engineer) but I'm having some trouble resolving this problem:
My computer came with synaptics version 15 pre-installed, and a windows 7 OS. Since then I have upgraded to windows 8.1, and synaptics version 16.2 without any issues.
I recently saw that synaptics version 17 was released, so I went ahead and uninstalled synaptics 16.2 and rebooted my computer. After that I tried to install version 17 multiple times, and I get an error that says the "Install Failed" with no other useful information.
To trouble shoot I have turned off the Windows feature that checks for driver signing (which is now turned back on), and I have tried installing previous versions of synaptics drivers (like 15.2) and they now all return an "Install Failed" error.
Nothing has worked so far. Any ideas?
    Tyler

Ok I fixed it formatting Windows 7.

  • Yoga 13: any chance for open source Synaptics touchpad driver or touchpad API?

The Yoga is my 1st Windows machine in years. Coming from various MacBook(s) Pro(s) I dearly miss the capabilities and configurability of Apple's multitouch touchpad. While responsibility of the Synaptics device is fairly decent I haven't found an experience that is anything close to the one perceived on the MacBook touchpad. Latter in combination with BetterTouchTool is my weapon of choice when it comes to productivity. It offers almost unlimited configurability, that is, I can design/configure any gesture I desire and link it to a keystroke for instance. It's just perfect since I am not into Apple's predefined gesture settings at all.
Now I have spent endless hours in getting this back on my new Yoga. At least I am now able to use 3 finger swipes for back/forward navigation. However, this is just a fraction of what I need/want. That's why I am looking for a way to either be able to modify the driver myself (open source, Lenovo/Synaptics?) or get access to an API I can build on. Obviously I'd prefer latter option. Synaptics is touting their Gesture Suite but I cannot find a download somewhere. I'm afraid it's OEM only. And if that's the config app that comes with the standard Synaptics driver it's just pathetic.
So does anyone have a clue on how we can significantly improve the performance of this otherwise very nice laptop?
    Thanks in advance,
    stfn

  • Synaptics Touchpad Driver Incompatible

After I upgraded to Windows 10 my touchpad on an L55-B5338 reverted to a default mode.  I tried to reconfigure the settings using the Synaptics Configuration settings but I get this error. "Control Panel Extension is Incompatible With Driver Version" Is there any plan to provide an update that works with Windows 10? TIA

Check THIS list of Toshiba supported models for a Windows 10 upgrade.  There are some L55 listings but   you must cross check with the first 5 digits of the part number. I believe you're going to luck out. If so, you can get a new Synaptics driver hopefully.

    Hi,
I am facing trouble for past few days where the touchpad stops working - as in scrolling using the touchpad. I have to go to the synaptics driver folder and start SynTPEnh.exe manually. BUt after sometime, say opening folders, browsers, system hangs for few seconds and the process stops.

  • Driver for synaptics touchpad - Vista 64

After I ran the Advanced SystemCare Free or CCleaner on my new Vista 64 Business, I started to got error message saying that  Synaptics touchpad does nto work any more. After doing some research, I understand that both of the two programs will remove the synaptics touchpad driver.
I tried to re-install the driver, however, I could not find the synaptics touchpad driver at Lenovo website. Does anybody know where to find the driver?
Also, is there any way to prevent the driver being removed by either Advanced SystemCare Free or CCleaner?
    Thanks.

The latest Synaptics touchpad driver release is available here. However, I would recommend you install the Lenovo touchpad driver instead. It is called the UltraNav driver. As you didn't post what model ThinkPad you have, I won't be able to post a link.

  • I just wanted to chime in here on the Synaptics Touchpad issues...

I have a Toshiba L305D-S5934 Laptop with an AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Processor, it has a Synaptics touchpad as do most laptops these days and I have run into the following problems: I am running Windows 7 RC Build 7100 (an official download not a torrent download) and my Synaptics Touchpad shows up as a PS2 compatable mouse in device manager. If I download the drivers that come through Windows Update they seem to work fine untill I reboot my system, at reboot just after the Windows 7 splash screen, she blue screens with a memory dump going to somewhere and then does an automatic restart, if I attempt to start windows normally after the restart she bluescreens again with the same results, and this will go on time and time again until I either go into safe mode and remove the Synaptics driver or let startup repair do its thing or do a system restore, all of which leaves me with a Synaptics Touchpad with erattic behavior, that loses its scrolling functionality, and is hypersensitive almost to the point that I can't type much of anything without the cursor jumping around all over the place and relocating like it has a mind of its own. Now Toshiba has something called Toshiba's Value Added Package (not much value there for 64 bit systems it seems this thing was a pain in Vista x64 and it is more of a pain in Windows 7 x64) I will not install  the Value added Package until I am convinced t hat Toshiba or whoever makes it gives a rat's rear-end about 64 bit systems and Windows 7 the last time I tried to install it  gave all kinds of problems and produced some blue screens of its own I believe. The Value Added Package however includes Toshiba's Flash Cards Utility that makes the Fn key work and gives access to disabling the Synaptics touchpad (you can do this in the driver as well, but when the driver is installed well she bluescreens except in safe mode) The Synaptics driver seems to do okay in safe mode so that could mean that another driver is causing the conflict but something is not wanting to lay nice with the Synaptics driver. I must note however that the Synaptics driver worked just fine in Windows Vista x64. Also I have downloaded the driver from Toshiba's site, the 64 bit Synaptics driver from the Synaptic's site and a couple of others, the one that came closeest to working the best was a version 12.something for HP laptops but the option to disable the touchpad wasn't in the driver. I usually use a mouse with my laptop but I use the touchpad when I take it places with me sometimes, it would be nice to have full functionality of both mouse and touchpad and to be able to disable the touchpad when an external pointing device is attached the way I could in Vista but right now I would settle to just be able to disable the touchpad until this is resolved so I can use the laptop without the cursor jumping all over the place and seemingly having a mind of it's own. As a side note I am very careful about allowing Windows Update to install any updates that it wants at this poing, more than once it has installed things that gave me bluescreens at reboot most notably the Toshiba Value Added Package and the Synaptics driver and maybe an Atheros Wireless driver but it does not yet seem to have the best interests of my PC at heart. On the other hand I have the 32 bit version installed on a Desktop PC with an old Athlon XP 2000+ and 2 GB of Ram it runs wonderfully nearly as well as Windows XP but there is no Synaptics touchpad on the desktop of course, and no Toshiba Value Added Package.
    Charles

I have had a similar problem, windows update does NOT update the synaptics touchpad.  I have a Toshiba Windows 7 and I did everything that was told by man and beast.
Finally, I went to control panel again, uninstalled synaptics and had to use the a program called Driver Update.  This program installed my Realtek Audio even though this was working apparently the two work together.  It SUCKS that you have to pay
to install security programs that run your programs but this was the only thing that worked for me and I went through months of  not having a touchpad.
I hope this helps others solve their touchpad problems.  Good Luck

  • [solved] Synaptics Touchpad works in GDM but not in Gnome Session

    Hey,
i just installed arch x86_64 to a Amilo Pa 3553 Notebook with synaptics touchpad driver.
It's working in gdm perfectly but after login i cannot click, wether tabbing nor klicking.
But i can move the coursor.
Touchpad is recognized in Xorg.log without any errors or warnings.
    Any Idea what went wrong?
    SOLVED
It was just a check in the gnome touchpad settings at "Mausklick per Touchpad freischalten".
Sorry, i don't know in english, but it means something like "activate Click per touchpad"

I too am having the same problem. This only seems to happen after I connect to a projector by the VGA port on my Lenovo T500. I use the display port to connect to a 30" apple cinema display and have no issues. Have not had much luck in finding what changes in the gnome config when this problem arises.
I am looking forward to anyone being able to explain what is actually changing and why. WIll continue to dig into this and post a workaround if I find one.

  • Synaptics touchpad 64-bit enhancements has stopped working.

    Hi guys,
I recently bought new HP 15-r022tx Notebook PC (Product Number:   J6M27PA) which comes with free dos, have installed windows 7 x64 and updated all drivers from hp online, after all latest update i get a error message on startup 'synaptics touchpad 64-bit enhancements has stopped working'.
have tried to configure mouse setting but wen i try to access mouse setting i get a error message 'unable to connect to synaptics pointing device driver'
have uninstalled and re installed the driver from hp support still the same problem.
so after some online search and no luck in any of them i continued using lap by closing the program on the first error message on every startup without any synaptics touchpad functions like two touch scrolling, zooming etc... but some times the cursor jumps around erratically and moves on its own with no contact in the touchpad, click options are not working wen cursor strats to move on its own, after some observation i noticed mouse works fine on every startup(by closing the program on error message without touchpads some special functions) until i right click it (sometimes after first click some times after many clicks) until i right click using the touchpad the mouse seems to be working fine but after i right click the mouse it goes to its own way.
    any suggestions guys
    thanks you guys.....

    Hello Zman07,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I have read your post on how the TouchPad on your notebook computer is behaving erratically, and I would be happy to assist you!
To restore the functions on your TouchPad, I recommend uninstalling the driver from Programs and Features and installing this specific Synaptics TouchPad Driver. This parcel of software should be compatible with your current system.
If the issue persists, I also suggest following this document on Using and Configuring the TouchPad (Windows 7 and Vista). This should help adjust the TouchPad to your preferences.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!
