Faulty video memory?

Dear All,
I bought a MacBook Pro 15" last friday. I used it for a day and installed the 802.11n upgrade that I bought from Apple since they had NOT upgraded this unit or provided it for free and I couldn't be bothered to go back to the store for $2.
Quickly after the upgrade I noticed not all was good. The video memory, actually, does not behave as it should. This is especially the case when I use it in closed lid mode, but it's more or less all the time. I would like to know if there are any other options than to go back to the store with it.
I have uploaded the pictures to http://niklas.saers.com/MBP
Please view them in 100% size
Image 8663 and 8865: I have moved the terminal window around on the screen a bit
Image 8693 and 8700: Here you can see what the average background looks like. Go in close and you can see lots of yellow spots
Looking at the screen is like wearing dirty glasses! Moving windows around is a pain. What should I do? Is there a video ram update available? I would prefer not having to return my mac as I need the computer for my work
Cheers
Niklas

Good news,
I went to Merlin in Esbjerg, Denmark, where I'd bought the computer and they listened to my problem, accepted the MBP back and gave me a new one. They only had the one on stand in the store, but since I need a computer to do my work, that was fine by me. It wasn't scratched and looked like new. Coming home I found that the battery was dead, so I called up the store and they suggested I install the battery from the MBP I handed in. So now, after two trips back and GREAT customer service, I have a new MBP that hopefully won't have this problem. I've noticed that it takes an hour and a half or something around that before the problem will appear on the previous one, so I'll keep you posted in a couple of days.

PS, the space bar on the new computer is squeeking. Guess I'll call my computer Mouse or something

  • Re: Satellite A300: How to dedicate video memory

hi i was checking methods on how to make my graphics card work a little harder and people kept telling me to dedicate some memory to my video.
these are my settings right now:
    total graphics memory: 358 mb
    *dedicated video memory: 0 mb*
    system video memory: 128
    shared system memory: 230
so i was looking for a solution on how to do that and i found this :
but i cannot get to this menu,
    please help,
    Nathan
ps. do u think this graphic card is good enough to play new games? (eg. cod5, far cry 2, etc.)

    http://ftp.toshiba.ca/support/TechSupport/quickspecs/quickspecs.asp?id=Quick%20Specs%20Chart&family=sat ellite&partnum=PSAJ0C-SH308C
    It says:
Mobile Intel GMA X3100. Up to 358MB of shared video memory
Unfortunately the Intel Graphics solutions are not designed to have great 3D performance.
You need an ATI(AMD) or nVidia graphics chip for decent performance.
If you want to play the latest games, you will need to lower the resolution and use low graphics settings.
Note that many games need special DirectX/OpenGL features to run, which the Intel chip may not have.
I imagine older games like FarCry1 will run ok

  • Why does my Macbook Air only have 64MB of dedicated video memory

Hello, I created a windows partition on my Macbook Air and after going into my Display settings I see that it only has 64MB of dedicated video memory out of 1696MB. Please tell me how I can fix this problem as I should have much more Dedicated memory from my Macbook air.
Additional INFO: MacBook Air Early 2014 edition, and has Intel 5000.

Hey thanks a lot for the quick reply Loner, however, I'm not really sure what you mean (sorry I'm a bit slow when it comes to computers). I checked out your link, and when I do the same steps as in the link by going into screen resolution> advanced> adapter: it shows Total Available Graphics Memory- 1696MB, and Dedicated Video Memory 64MB, but it only uses 64MB, it doesn't use more when it needs to.
I tried playing GTA 4 on my laptop via bootcamp, and in-game it tells me my laptop is only using 64MB of video memory and the game requires at least 260 or so, and my laptop won't use more (at least I'm pretty sure it is not using more or the game wouldn't give me that mssg).
Again, thanks for your response, and looking forward to what you have to say, or any other that want to chime in Thanks a lot as always.

  • Video Memory Used

Is there an app or utility that would tell me how much RAM the video card is using?
Does it show up under Activity Monitor?
I am trying to trouble shoot a problem just a few of us are having using a projector via the video out showing a quicktime video using Keynote. For my self, at higher projector resolutions, the image begins to flicker, then becomes distorted (tall and skinny in my case), I am just wondering if I am coming up against a video memory limitation since trying the options listed on the keynote forum have not helped.
    Thanks in advance.

Seems no one knows for sure. The new MacBooks have a bit more it can access.

  • How can I tell what video card and how much video memory does my iMac have?

How or where can I find out: which video card does my iMac have and how much video memory does it have? I've tried looking in System profiler, but I did not see it there. Thank you.

Once you open System Profiler there should be a line called "memory" which is the RAM (vs. hard drive size which is not what is called memory), e.g., Memory: 1.5 GB
For video click on the line Graphics/Displays and look at the chipset line, e.g., Chipset Model: GeForce2 TwinView
Kappy's instructions are handy for checking the original configuration of your computer, but that may have been changed at some time, especially if you bought it secondhand.

  • G580 20150 what's actual dedicated video memory?

I am confused about my dedicated video memory. I was told by the salesman that I got 1 GB dedicated video memory to play high end graphic games. What I could find is only 32 MB dedicated video memory in the system and 1024 MB in Geforce. So please help me. Will I get performance of 1 GB dedicated video memory performance?
Also got a query regarding the LSC's error message regarding Device Manager alert. I could not find any error in the device manager.

    Hi ismailpm.
The 32mb of video ram is whats built into the dedicated GPU on the morherboards CPU.
The ram you have installed will also be used by the processor to keep your system running smoothly.
The Geforce however is a discreet Graphics card connected via PCE-E on the motherboard, Your Geforce has 1GB which equals 1024 mb of dedicated ram used for graphics intensive programes.
The idea is that if you are playing a game that requires more power your Geforce should overide the onboard graphics to provide the extra power needed.
As for LSC, Make sure you have the latest version 2.3.002, Once installed re-run hardware scan, That should fix any Driver missing issues.
    Hope that helps!
    And welcome to the forum.

  • Satellite C855D-S5303 Video Memory

I just bought this laptop because I needed something that wasnt expensive and needed it quickly (for college). I have replaced the original 2GB's of RAM with 8GB's. Is there a way to dedicate some of this extra RAM to my video memory? I have already checked the BIOs but I didn't see the setting. Any help on this would be great.

    No, that's not possible.

  • Increasing video memory from the A40-211

    Hello all,
I've got the Satellite A40-211. The Intel chipset also takes care for all the graphic stuff, so it needs a little bit RAM memory as video memory. This is possible up to a maximum of 64MB. The problem is that the chipset now uses a maximum of 16mb as video memory, but I want to increase this to 64MB.
Where can I find the settings for this in Windows Xp Home?
    Thanks for all the help!
    Bart

Hi, its not possible to increase the video memory yourself !
Let me say that your Notebook has an dynamic Memory Management
Your Computer System reserved only so much Graphic Memory as he needs, to accomplish all tasks running on your A40.
...this Dynamic Video Sharing is not bad, as I think !
More Infos about your Graphic Chip youll find on the pages of Intel.
    nice evening...

    Hi,
From the specs of your computer:

Integrated Graphics*Integrated video is not available if a graphics card is installed.
Supports PCI Express x16 graphics cards.
Either integrated graphics or the PCI Express x16 slot are usable at one time; they are not usable concurrently.

The answer is no, not available. If you wish more, you can upgrade video card using the PCI Express x16 slot . Your machine has 300W PSU, you need to buy a card which can run with 300W PSU otherwise you need a new PSU.

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15207067
Maybe there is somebody here who knows?
    Thanks

I just got around to reading your other thread, should have done that first, been jumping between things this morning.
Think you are right it wasn't using the 6750M (at least not when you looked at system usage).
And you already have 11.5 driver.
I'm assuming that is uses the built-in video card instead of the AMD Radeon HD 6750M
Although it says that on drivers its only showing 707mb of video memory.
So that could just be the 512mb + shared ram.
It should be showing like 1.5GB of memory if it was using the dedicated video card.
I googled a bit and it's people are saying we can't switch yet but it should be using the dedicated one by default.

    Hello Nello,
For Voip i´m using the native bundle phone, and it works well, if your account is SIP. Actually the only problem for me is the Codec priority order, it start in G.711, and if takes around 85K, that takes some sensibility on band avaibility on tour network , special if you have an ADSL with with an upload close to 128K as me.
I have a note on this discution, but till now i dont have any clue to change this priotity!,
    All the best

  • Satellite 5200 - Video memory corruption

One month ago I encountered a problem with a slightly garbled screen
on the internal and external displays. More or less visible vertical
strips appear on the screen. They are mainly blue on dark background
(best visible) or yellow on white background (less visible) and have
approximately the same thickness of order 1-2 mm and length of order
1 cm. The locations of the strips depend on the positions of details
of the actual picture currently displayed on the screen.
The boot screen is also garbled but now by red vertical strips located on the left and on the right of the red logo "In Touch with Tomorrow Toshiba"
In the full screen text mode, odd characters appear in positions which correlate with positions of true characters.
The BurnIn Test V4.0 Pro indicated a video memory corruption (the adapter is NVIDIA GeForce4 460 Go, 64 MB, integrated RAMDAC). That is very interesting, yesterday
there was a short period of about 5 minutes when all the described above symptoms suddenly disappeared.
Even the BurnIn Test showed that everything is OK. But after this period, the symptoms recovered again. For this
reason I would like to ask how to solve the problem.
Is this indeed a bad video memory which can recover and then become bad again or other reasons, such as a bad connectivity, etc.?
    Thanks.

hi, i had the same problem on a Satellite m70-159. With one diference- mine would start only in safe mode. But the same vertical strips, even in the ''in touch with tomorow'' screen. this was the good news. the bad news is that they had to replace both the motherboard and the video module.
sorry.. and it's not like anything had happened to my notebook..
