FAX failure and recovered files

When I receive a fax it often/sometimes fails and takes 2 or 3 attempts to succeed.
After a restart, in the bin I find *Recovered files* eg "Recovered files : com.apple.Preview2449_2354933611" which are perfectly good.
Why does this happen? and where are these files from as I could use these without having to keep resending from costly mobile service?

Have you done these two lately...

Most likely in the tmp folder at root.
Why does this happen?
Besides Disk problems, possibly the Fax or Modem settings.

  • Plist and Recovered Files

With Search down, I can only post this question as a new topic. Suddenly in Trash, I have some Recovered files that appear to relate to Keynote. The folder name is:
    com.apple.iWork.Keynote1099_SFED_2329226411
Content is a bunch jpg files, such as: stonemarble_barA_flathi-Layer0Image.jpg. Since I have two full Leopard boot volumes on my Mac Pro, both of which have a Keynote installation, it would seem this folder in Trash could relate to either of them? However, neither the folder nor any file can be found with Spotlight to exist anywhere on the Mac Pro.
This seemed to occur after in one boot volume of Leopard I did an Update to Microsoft Office 2004, and then returned to the other Leopard boot volume. I don't know which boot volume placed the Recovered files into Trash (both have the same Username for the Home Directory), and don't know if they are fine to delete, or not. I would assume they can be deleted, but . . . ?
    Ernie

I used to check and double-check these all the time. Now I just delete them as I've found they're not really "missing". Apparently, Apps that use the "Temporary Items" folder and don't remove the files (or aren't able to remove the files because the app didn't quit properly, as in a crash) then these files are "recovered" from there.

  • Import failure and temporary files

Hi, I'm trying to import my photos from my iPhone into Aperture using the Import function. During the import process, it creates a temporary file, like "..importing.IMG1721.JPG" onto my photo folder, and then continues to say "Importing" indefinitely, so I need to do a force quit on the application. So now two problems:
    1) how can I remove these temporary files Aperture has created? When I do a Get Info on them, the permissons say Unknown Access. I can't drag them to Trash or rename these files either?
    2) is the iPhone importing a known bug? Note my setup is as follows:
    - my files in Aperture are referenced instead of managed
    - my photo files are stored on an external drive connected thru my Airport Extreme
    - I have no problem importing photos from an SD card to my external drive using Aperture's Import
    - as a workaround, I can tell Aperture to import the photos from the iPhone to a local folder, then manually copy the files from the local folder to my external drive and then do a "reconnect all" in Aperture, though this process is time-consuming and something I want to avoid.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tim

The m4v can be converted using Compressor. The Unix file is more of a problem. See if you can fnd something that opens it. Try the QT player first. If not you'll need to get it in a proper video format.
Can't tell you what to convert it to without knowing complete and exact specifications of the media.

  • Mount time machine, how to open and recover .inprogress file

so this is how i fixed and mounted a time machine capsule ( it was extended journaled Case-sensitive) to MacBook Pro ( non-case sensitive) and recovered files from .inprogress file. for me it worked like a charm and lets see if this can help you too.
Found a way to figure it out! (mount drive). So I went to my gf's laptop and created a new backup file for her ( just the file or a new sparsebundle.  the info.plist , token and info.bckup are the files that we need from here ). If no mac is available, create a new backup in pc but it has to be to the same time capsule  ( the files that we need and create will point and tell the sparse bundle a new path to time capsule ) To het there you go to the sparse bundle Dmg, right click and go to "show contents". So this is how i change it, I open 2 finder windows and got each sparse bundle in it ( old one or damaged and new one), righ click on both > show contents and then  replace these files from the new one to the damaged one (  info.plist , token and info.bckup ). That's it. The time machine at least mounted on my desktop and could see the files. Now for opening the .inprogress file; go to Automator >new workflow > and drag in this order;  get selected finder items, get folder contents and open finder items. While the .inprogress file i selected, press "run" or play button in Automator. That's it. Now you may try to drag to desktop but it will say "the volume has the wrong case sensitive for a backup" but you should have access. Now for copying or move to somewhere; get another hard drive ( external) and format it to the same as time capsule ( extended journaled case sensitive is my case), once it's done, right click and go to info> at the bottom uncheck "ignore ownership" and close it. Now you can copy from .inprogress file to just formatted hard drive and from hard drive to laptop. Here's the annoying part; it will treat it as a special folder ( when you paste it in you desktop it's gonna ask for password, if you wanna move it somewhere else it's going to do it as well. But at least you can recover the file ) . once this process It's done just reformat your time capsule.
    Cheers,

well, after you transfer everything to new hard drive and to avoid the putting a password everytime you move the folders, richt click on drive > get info > check again the "ignore ownership" option and you shouldnt have any problems transfering back folders

I did manage to save a lot of user file documents but I don't see or
recognize the iWeb site file. It was on a 15" G4 Titanium pb.
I'm trying to find a way, using version 2.0.4 of iWeb on a different
pb to recover the file into the iWeb app or a way to download the site into iWeb.
There are 6 pages of images and text, and it
would be a task for me to recreate the whole thing again. I did
download the site but I don't know how or if I can get iWeb to see it and open it.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this? The link to my site:

Unfortunately iWeb cannot read or import previously published files, only generate them.  You'll have to recreate your site from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

  • HELP! How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?

    Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?
Any solutions are very much apreciated!
    Thanks!
I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.
    http://www.twocanoes.com/
Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine

There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

  • Rman backup failure, and is generating a large number of files.

I would appreciate some pointers on this if possible, as I'm a bit of an rman novice.
Our rman backup logs indicated a failure and in the directory where it puts its files there appeared a large number of files for the 18th, which was the date of the failure. Previous days backups generated 5 files of moderate size. When it failed it generated between 30 - 40 G of files ( it looks like one for each database file ).
The full backup is early monday morning, and the rest incremental :
I have placed the rman log, the script and a the full directory file listing here : http://www.tinshed.plus.com/rman/
    Thanks in advance - George

it seems to make backup copies of the datafiles every night, so the creation of these large files is normal ?Above results indicate that you have full (incremental level 0) backup(all datafiles copies ) and there happen update/recover (applying incremental level 1) backup. So there was happen applying */exlibris1/rmanbackup/database_f734055045_s243_s1* inremental backup to full(level 1) backup. And size should be normal
Why is it making copies of the datafiles even on days of incrementals ?
Because after getting level 1 backup and need applying and every day will apply one incremental backup.

I recently had a catastrophic hard drive failure and had to replace it.  At the time, I had a VERY extensive music library and it is now lost. This entire library was also on iTunes. Is it possible to recover that library, or do I have to download again?

If your hard drive was not backed up then you can download items purchased from the iTunes Store.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list, or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Did you subscribe to iTunes Match service?  If you did, your other music would be available too.
Note, this restores the music files themselves, not playlists, playcount, ratings, or other things associated with the actual library file structure.
You really should consider getting a backup drive. Hard drives failures are a certainty and it saves a lot of grief.

I can see a preview of the photos, but I cannot access or edit them.  They say "the folder cannot be located" and "the photo is missing".  I have gone through multiple Adobe tutorials to try and recover them to no avail.  Any tips?

Backup catalogs wouldn't have helped with this problem anyway, but naturally, you shouldn't delete backup catalogs for a while.

  • How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files?

How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files? I need to look at several thousand PDF files. It takes too long to open each one individually. The only thing I could think of is combining them into large groups and then using the Navigation index. But I like the way windows Picture and Fax Viewer does it because you can keep the files separate. Combining PDFs causes loss of individual file names. That would be a problem since I do need to have the individual file names.

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is a DLL and is started via a rundll32.exe call and can't be set as an application to handle images in Firefox 3 and later versions.
Try to set Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as the default viewer in Windows, then it should be listed automatically in the Mozilla Firefox Browse dialog.

  • I lost a really important file (an iText Express document) randomly and then one day, a "recovered file" folder popped up and I assume it has to do with that, but the file just contains a doc with a bunch of coding. What do I do with that? HELP!!!

As the title question states, I lost a really important file with iText Express. I've been using iText Express for a year or two now because it's just the one application I downloaded for writing and saving documents. I was working on one for a few months and randomly one day last month, when I went to open it to resume editing my work, the file was gone! I searched my whole laptop and trash. Then one day, a "Recovered Files" folder popped up in the area my file used to be, so I assumed that was the file I lost being recovered and I felt relieved. But when I opened the folder, the document inside was a "SoftwareMap" document with a bunch of coding written in it. I don't understand what I'm supposed to do with that or how it's going to help me recover my file?!? I lost SO much work!!! If anyone has ANY idea what to do, how this happened, or if the coding is supposed to help me recover my file, PLEASE help!!!

No, I already tried looking at that. The file that recovered was not in the trash, it appeared in my documents folder. I opened it up and inside was an iText Express document with coding. Then inside of there, was and then and this "SoftwareMap" document contained a bunch of coding and symbols and words.

  • Music Files Deleted After Hard Disk Failure and First Sync After Hard Disk

    Hi,
I recently had a hard disk failure and lost all of the data on my hard drive. I replaced the hard drive and reinstalled all of the software including iTunes. I am running Windows XP Home. The first time I plugged my iPod Nano into my computer after the hard drive replacement it synced to iTunes and since iTunes had no music files it deleted all of the music files on my Nano. How do I get them back and why on earth would iTunes do such a stupid thing??? My Nano contained many songs that I bought from iTunes and I want to get them back. I have found some third party software that will undelete the deleted files but it costs $69. I don't feel that I should have to pay to correct a defective feature in iTunes. Does Apple have an undelete utility? Can I redownload the songs that I purchased from iTunes?

*The first time I plugged my iPod Nano into my computer after the hard drive replacement it synced to iTunes*
When you connected did you get a message that your iPod was linked to another library, and then press Erase and Sync? When an iPod is set to update automatically and you connect to a computer with an empty iTunes and accept the message above it will erase the originals completely (as you have discovered). Also as you've seen, none of the recovery programs are particularly cheap so you have to decide if in your particular circumstances it's worth it to get your songs back. It may be if you have a lot of purchased tracks which you will have to pay to download again. If they came primarily from your CDs then it's most likely not as you can re-rip them.
*Can I redownload the songs that I purchased from iTunes?*
If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service

  • Is there a way to undo after Photoshop has frozen and you are working with a recovered file?

so this is exactly what happened...
I had been working on an edit for way too long and of course i didnt save it the entire time because im terrible i guess, I wanted to see what the deal with Lens Flare was so i went Filter>Render>Lens Flare to check it out. I hated it and immediately removed the flare with no problems. Then I was going to go back to Lens Flare to see if i could adjust it into something sort of decent but i accidentally went Filter>Render>Lighting Effects and it locked my Photoshop up (yes my computer sucks). I then started to panic because of the extensive amount of time i put into this edit without saving it. I opened Photoshop and thankfully it loaded up the recovered file i was working on. Unfortunately it has the terrible lens flare from my first attempt attached to it and im not able to undo or anything. Is there anything i can do to get rid of the lens flare? any help is welcomed. thank you so much for your time

Have you applied the Lens Flare destructively on the single Layer in the file?
