Faxing with usb modem trouble

I found out the you could fax right from the Mac and was thrilled, but hit a snag when I discovered that you could only do it through a analog modem that connected directly to your phone line (DSL or ADSL doesn't work) so I bought the apple usb modem, at first I could send faxes just fine but couldn't receive them, so I tried attaching a 2wire filter on the phone line too filter the DSL out. Now I can receive part of the fax, but only part of it. Some times half the page and sometimes jst one line. what am I doing wrong now????? Please help I've been trying for 2 weeks to get this going, and I'm so close, but this ain't horse shoes. Going Crazy.
Thanks.

What happens if you take the DSL modem out of the picture altogether (unplug it and any DSL filters from the phone wall jack) and plug in the  USB modem into the phone wall jack all by itself? Can you send/receive faxes okay then?

I know the answer to this question. I found it on the reviews of the modem on the UK Apple Store.
In order to get the Mac to recognize the modem as one that accepts faxes, you have to send out one fax. I took a random Web page on Safari, did File>Print, and then selected the PDF drop down in the lower left corner. Then select Fax PDF, and then choose the external modem as the sending device.
You don't even have to send it to a real fax machine, just the attempt on sending somehow automatically sets up the modem to accept faxes! I just entered my cell phone number, and then let it ring without answering, then deleted the fax from the print queue. Meantime, miraculously, the modem started receiving faxes...
Now why didn't Apple just tell us this in the first place?

  • Faxing with usb modem

My mac mini is connected to the net through an ethernet cable.
Can I fax off my mac with a usb modem and still have it connected with the ethernet.
Is it possible??? anyone out there doing it.

Yes, there should be no conflict. I have done it. Not with a Mini, but it shouldn't make any difference.

  • Power management problem with USB modem

I now use a MS-6743 (i865G) board. My previous board was MS-6533, it did not have USB v2.0.
The problem is my Aztech (originally Smartlink) USB modem prevents the system going into standby mode but this should be a USB 2.0 issue because I'm using the same driver for the modem like previous mainboard config. I could go into standby mode flawlessly with my old board.
Furthermore I'm using USB keyboard, mouse but no power management property dialog box appear for those devices. So I'm pretty sure the problem is because of USB 2.0. Is there a way to come around this issue? Thanks in advance...

  • Problem with USB Modem (Apple)

    Hello,
I have a MacBookPro and a recently purchased the Apple USB External Modem. When I connect to the computer once I get a sign that reads:
Incompatible. You can not use an Apple USB External Modem on this computer.
Please, I am overwhelmed with this, anyone can tell me what happens??
Thanks, and sorry for my English.

The Apple USB modem requires Mac OS X v10.4.3 through Mac OS X v10.6.8 running in 32 bit mode. This modem has been discontinued.

  • Problem with USB modem

I have just bought a macbook with mac os X tiger. I have a problem with network configuration when I'd like to setup my broadband. I'm now using Tiscali broadband which supplied me a USB modem (Sagem Fast 800). I've already installed the software and driver. The problem appeared when I tried to configured the network setting. I couldn't find "external modem" or "ethernet adaptor" as the manual suggests. As a result, I couldn't make any interent connection. It'd be so grateful if anyone who's using tiscali broadband can kindly give me the solution for this.

    Hi,
Thanks a lot for your reply. I've looked in the network port configurations and found "Airport", "Bluetooth", "Biult-in Ethernet" and "Built-in Firewire". All of these are checked but I can't see the "external modem" port. I also rebooted the conputer after installing the software and driver. There is a software "ADSL Monitor" shown up in my desktop but can't see the device in the network configurations.

  • Faxing with Internal Modem - Mac Mini and DSL

I have a first generation Mac Mini with an internal modem, and am trying for the first time to send a fax. I believe I've configured the faxing feature correctly through the print/fax preferences. I have DSL connected through ethernet. When I send the fax, it shows in the menu that it is dialing (but no sound), and then on the status window, it says it's on hold. It then redials in another 6 minutes or so and then same thing happens again--on hold. Eventually after several tries it disappears from the status window, and there's no indication that the task was completed.
What I'm wondering is, is it actually possible to fax using DSL? I called my ISP (Earthlink) who said I needed an external fax machine, that I couldn't fax with in internal modem. This led me to believe he had no idea what I was talking about. He referred me to Apple. I called but they are closed.
I'm trying to fax to a governmental office, so perhaps they are closed to, and that's why it isn't going through?
Or do I need to be doing something differently.
    Help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Esther

Hi Esther Le Sieur: Unfortunately you can't fax through DSL. If you do have an internal modem you can certainly use that. You will need to use a regular phone line from the modem to a regular dial-tone jack. Depending on how your DSL is installed, you may have access to a regular dial-tone jack at or near where your DSL is connected.
    Good Luck

  • MS6340 v3.0B with USB Modem?

    Hi all,
I have a MS-6340 Ver3.0 B Mainboard and I'm thinking about to buy a USB modem. However, I've heard that USB modems can cause problems with Athlon or the VIA chipset. Does anyone have the same board with a USB modem. Does it work ok or should I buy an ethernet modem?
    Regards )
    Ron

    Hi,
I would buy an ethernet modem in any case, as they don't use the CPU as much as the USB modems do...
They are more stable too, so in any case it's a better buy...

  • Ibook wifi with usb modem with adsl router

how could you connect the ibook so that it's wireless to the phone line. I'm gonna have to buy all the parts but what's the easiest way to do this ?

To give the iBook G4 wireless the ability to connect to a wireless network, you simply need to install an AirPort Extreme card. The last iBook G4s had wireless built-in.
If you have a ADSL modem without an Ethernet output you will need to replace that modem with a modem that does have an Ethernet output. Then you can buy any inexpensive 802.11b/g compliant wireless router to provide a wireless network for your iBook.

  • Set up Time capsule with USB modem

    HI
I'm relatively new to my mac & I just purchased a time capsule. I use a Verizon USB modem for internet and this has caused me some problems trying to set up the TC.
Is there anything any one can tell me to help? I could use some step by step help. The light is green, says I was successful but I can't print & have not even tried anything else. I just know my internet connection is wrong.....
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I was hoping I could set it up for remote printing & backup w/o using internet connection. No?
Although the Time Capsule (TC) could be configured a number of ways, having a USB modem will limit you somewhat. I am assuming that your modem is not wireless and that you connect your MacBook Pro directly for Internet access using an USB cable ... correct?
Since the modem doesn't have an Ethernet port, the only option you will have for the TC is to operate it as a wireless network ... basically its default configuration. You then have two choices on how to connect your MBP to the TC: by Ethernet or wirelessly.

  • Help ANSWERING a Fax? (USB modem)

I can send faxes a-ok (finally... after switching USB ports), but I'm having a bear of a time GETTING faxes.
I'm using the same phone line I do for my phone, which shouldn't make any difference. I'm plugged-in, and my line is clear. The phone rings and regardless of whether I set fax prefs to "answer after 1 ring" or use the fax icon in the menu bar to "answer now", the stats says "...answering..." but then NOTHING happens.
I get no fax. There is no status of the fax in my fax log window, or console logs, and it never hangs up! So, in order to use my phone again, I have to physically un-plug the line from my computer. Even then, if I re-plug it back in too soon, it messes up my phone line.
    Argh. Any ideas?
    e

I'm also enountering similar problems on a Santa Rosa MacBook; receiving faxes via the Apple USM modem doesn't work (the console fax log shows that the ringing is recognized, but the call isn't answered). Problem occurs both using Apple's built-in fax SW as well as with PageSender.
On one occasion, it seemed as if unplugging/replugging the modem and then reconfiguring the fax device helped.
I reported it on Apple's bug tracking system, where it is still showing as a serious open bug. I believe this is a modem driver issue and hope Apple gets around to fixing it soon.

  • IPad with USB modem

Anybody know how I can enable my iPad to see my shared Internet connection? I'm connecting to the Net with a VZAccess on a UM150 USB evdo modem.
I've tried using a wireless router as an access point but it can't "see" the shared connection. The iPad can see the wireless network, but it can't connect to the Net. Both Belkin and Linksys techs say it isn't possible, I have to have a modem with an ethernet port, but I can't believe that.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Reset all settings
Settings > General > Reset > Reset all Settings.
This will return all iDevice settings to factory defaults... you will not lose any data.... But you will have to re-enter all of the device settings.
    Followed by a Reset...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

  • Using USB modem with a macbook

I use a vodafone usb modem to connect to the internet , and i am currently trying to download a torrent using Azureus , but my download speed has never been higher than 10kB/s.
Does any one know how to configure a usb modem to Azureus so the speed can improve. Or does anyone know another software which works better with usb modems ... help.

My speeds are related to signal strength just like my phone coverage which is relatively the same thing because the usb modem is a phone of sorts. In urban areas, the strength is much stronger than in rural areas but for the most part, I am very happy with Verizon. I've found that the device is not as important as the provider and the quality of their network.
To me, the ability to use my machine anywhere I choose is appealing regardless of the speed.

  • Thomson Speedtouch USB modem installation

    Hi All,
I gave my Mac Mini to my parents and they have an ADSL connection at home. Unfortunately, it's a USB modem, which meant that I had to download drivers for it and try to get it configured.
Here's what I did so far:
    1. Downloaded and installed drivers. Link: http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/downloads/330/302/st330OSX_10_4full.zip
    2. Connected the modem
OS X 10.4.8 sees the modem and I tried various different types of configurations, but no matter what I do, I get a

Modem lights are green, and it works under Windows 2000 on the laptop I'm using. Any ideas on what the problem may be?
Frankly, I'm a bit surprised. I bought a Mac in order to stop worrying about problems like these and for the past year it's been a really great experience, but now this
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Macs don't work well with usb modems. Get a modem with ethernet. No drivers, nothing to configure, no problems.
