Since I installed Mavericks, my safari browser is running very slow.
Since I installed Mavericks, my safari browser is running very slow.
Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same?
What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference? -
Safari 5.0.5 very slow to load.
safari 5.0.5 has suddenly started to become very slow with either the page taking an age to load or the page loads but the spinning wheel just carries on for ever at the end of the address bar, so if you open up another tab the thing grinds to a halt. I ve looked through all the solutions in the forum and every thing is fine apart from there is no com.apple.safari.plist folder anywhere. Also I ve tried firefox and thats equally as slow, so I tried chrome thats faster but hangs now and again. All software is bang up to date. It is nt my router because it downloads at lightening speed with files etc. Can anyone help please.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.
Right or control click your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then click: Get Info. In the Get Info panel, where you see capacity and available, make sure you have minimum of 15% free disk space.
If that doesn't help, try Safari in another user account. Same problems there then log back into your admin account, launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk. (not Verify Disk Permissions). If the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks -
Safari barely works. VERY SLOW.
Three days ago, March 27, evening, Pacific Daylight Time, I tried to download something from iTunes from my Mac. I had always used my iPad before. It downloaded it, then when I went to play it, it said the Mac was not authorized and window came up asking for my password. I entered and it said "Already authorized". Over and over, no matter what I did. I fiddled around a bit, nothing worked. I looked in help forums, nothing worked.
Finally I gave up. The music I had downloaded was accessible from my iPad so I just moved on and decided never to use the Mac to download from iTunes again. I have just the two, iPad and Mac.
Next morning, Friday, when I turned the Mac on, it sat there for about ten minutes and then asked for my password (not my usual way of getting on. I am the sole user). I thought it must be connected to my previous night's adventure with iTunes.
The system was barely working. Restarted two or three times. After that, I could get to Gmail with Safari.
But Safari was barely functional. I thought it was my ISP, waited a day or two.
But other people in the house who do not have Macs are finding no trouble with the internet.
Still, I cannot use Safari. It is so slow as to be useless. I've tried deleting cookies and clearing cache. Does nothing.
The sites I am trying to get to are large and well known, like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
Oddly enough, I can access still Gmail and Blogger no problem. But the news sites, forget it.
Because it started at the same time as the iTune glitch and the strange behaviour of the Mac the next morning, I wonder if it is somehow connected. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -

If you use a FireWire audio interface, disconnect it and test again. If you don't know what a FireWire audio interface is, you don't have one. -
Safari is very slow after the ios7 update. It is both slow to touch and respond and slow to execute the search. I have a lot of book marks maybe 100 in the book make bar. I have cleared cash and history still very slow to respond to touch.
Hello. This is my first time posting.
My name is Mark.
I suffered with this too! Both on my wifes Ipad and my new iphone 5S when I upgraded to ios 7
Changing the favorites folder fixed the problem on the ipad and iphone BUT I still had hundreds (maybe thousands) of bookmarks stuck on my iphone. Most of the bookmarks were duplicates. The ipad recoved a lot better and did not have the duplicate bookmarks.
I started deleteing the bookmarks one by one on my phone but this was taking forever. I needed a better way but I'm not a super user and could not figure out how to just delete all the bookmarks.
I stumbled across the CopyTrans tool for my PC.
http://www.copytrans.net/support/backup-iphone-bookmarks/
Basically connect your phone to the PC and run this program. Follow the instructions on their web page and you can then edit the bookmarks. After trying to delete them again one by one and not figuring out how to easily select them all, I simply selected the "Favorites" folder and then deleted it. Problem solved! The tool is kind of free but if all you do is just delete the Favorites folder then that counts as one action and you don't have to pay. At this point I'd gladly donate somthing to them for solving my Bookmarks issue!
Ok I'll stop talking.
Thanks,
Mark -
Safari (and other browsers) very slow loading "content rich" web pages
Hi,
I'm a very "light" user of my mac, using it basically for surfing the web, uploading pictures and music, etc... and recently any web page that has a lot of content (examples are nfl.com, nba.com, nhl.com, mlb.com, united.com, continental.com) takes a very long time to load (most other web pages load normally). Safari (and Firefox as well) gets to the web page in an instant, but then sits there trying to load content (mostly high res pictures and ads I suppose), which sometimes takes minutes or just never fully downloads the content. I'm connected to the internet via ethernet (high speed cable modem from Time Warner), and they've already come out and verified that everything on their end is fine. I've followed the instructions posted on some of the other similar posts (emptying cache, deleting cookies, disenabling add on's, reseting safari, logging in as another user, etc..), and this has not helped. Since this problem is persistent with both browsers, I'm wondering if this may be an OS issue as opposed to a browser issue. If someone can walk me through a solution (keep in mind that I'm a novice), that would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Could be.
Since the problems exist with multiple browsers, login to another user account on your Mac. Try Safari there. If you see the same behavior with Safari there, then follow the instructions here. You will need your install disc. The startup disk may need repairing. Even if Safari is ok in another account, it's still a good idea to check the startup disk. That way you can rule that out.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your startup disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free space.

Safari hangs and is very slow to connect initially after waking from sleep
Using Safari and 10.4.8 on a Mac Mini intel core duo
I put my Mac to sleep at night with the hard drive awake. In the morning, I wake my Mac and try to load a page in Safari and it always take about a minute for it to load the first page. Once it does that successfully then it works fine. Just seems that Safari and the network, which is wireless, take an exceptionally long time to wake up.
Any suggestions? I've cleared Safari's cache and rebooted.Hi alternapop!
Is loading webpages on Safari the first thing you do every morning you wake your Mac? It would seem to be something more related to your network or system getting up and running than Safari? Can you try it out with Firefox or another browser and see if you get the same thing and post back?

Safari 4.03 running very slow!!
On a Macbook Pro late 2008 on 10.5.7 and Safari been running fine
However over the past 2 days its gone really slow for no reason, Im typing this on Google Chrome on a PC!!
Whats happened???
I even updated to the latest 4.0.3 (5531.9) and still webpages load around 10-20 secs!!!! they were normally like lightning?!
My Pc is on the same net connection and that seems fine?
Help(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

Safari 3.0.4 very slow! Does one have a solution?
Hi all
I have read the recent posts following the upgrade to 10.4.11.
I didn't have any of the trouble mentioned in the many threads apart maybe from an initial crash when quitting the application, but after a couple of days using it, I can say that my browsing experience as become a waiting experience.
I just did a quick test like opening The Times online front page take initially 29 seconds to load fully, reloading it takes 24 seconds. www.timesonline.co.uk
Jumping from this board to the discussion link above takes about 10 seconds.
It used to be a lot quicker such as a second or two.
I don't think it has anything to do with my connection, as downloading files seems to be equivalent as previously on my ftp etc. any speed test shows the same values as previously i.e about 2MB.
Any idea what I can do to get safari working fast again, before as I will quite like to continue using safari.
Thank you
nullHi June
Glad to hear the page load has improved.
"Streaming" is quite different than "page load". The "stream" of content is dependent on the speed of your internet connection (varies according to each Internet Provider and options they offer), as well as the processing power of your computer.
For possibly improving your internet speed, talk to your Internet Provider to see what options are available. The higher the cable speed, the higher the monthly charge.
Specific to your computer, recent computers (Intel machines) are better capable of delivering content due to enhanced video and graphic boards than the PPC machines of 2 years + ago.
Specific to a particular web site's stream, sometimes a preference option is provided for adjusting the embedded player to match your cable connection speed. Modify the settings to match your connection. You may see some improvement.
Also, if you allow a stream to fully load before starting playback, stuttering ought to be minimize. -
Safari, mail, software update very slow on new imac
Hello,
I recently upgraded to a 21.5" i3 imac and transferred everything from my old imac (core 2 duo, os 10.4.10)
anything involving the internet is painfully slow, safari 5.02, firefox, mail, even the software update (but once it "catches"- downloads are fast)
I have tried the following:
1.) Repaired disk permissions
2.) Changed DNS
3.) Reset Safari
4.) Restarted computer
5.) Disabled all plugins (only had one which was an adobe reader)
No improvement- when I hookup my old computer- internet is fast.
Now for the really disturbing part- when I run windows 7 inside parallels 6, internet explorer is quick!
Help!Finally- the problem has been solved
on the second call to the cable company they flashed/reset the modem and now it is working perfectly (roadrunner wideband)-
the first time I called they just ran a diagnostic which appeared ok.
the second time they flashed to modem. -

Safari tab opening is very slow with graphic distortion
When i open a new tab in safari, it takes quite sometime to open up, and when it does there is graphic distortion while showing the top sites. Sometimes safari hangs during the tab opening and might also crash. i recently brought the macbook, its been less than a month and this problem has been there since the beginning.
when i checked out the bugs fixed in 10.6.2 this bug for graphic distortion was supposed to have been fix, looks like this that hasn't happened for me. my mac is up to date.Ok... try maintenance.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
Make sure Safari is running in 32-bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.
Relalunch Safari. If the distortion is still visible, go to ~/Library/Safari and move the TopSites.plist file to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari. If the distortion remains, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.
